This is absolutely awesome. I'm very happy they are bringing this back, in the form of a tinker nonetheless! :) 10 minute cooldown, requires Master Engineer and also provides a passive +45 stam in addition to its ability. It also makes your helm really erm, stand out.. I'll post a screenshot as soon as I can.

I don't think I enjoy the idea of my helm's model changing so I can mind control people every 10 minutes.
So im sure it has the same limitations as a priest's Mind control, no mind controlling raid bosses.

Is this enchant permament?
It says Dismantle and reassembles, so can you Remove the enchant and reaply the same thing on the helm all the time you want? or it is permament and can be only overwritten by a new enchant?

Two questions regarding this head enchant:
1) Does it have a cast time? If so, how long?
2) Does the mind-controlled target become a guardian (uncontrollable but friendly and set to "defensive") a pet (a la Hunter or Warlock, and thus replacing a current pet) or mind controlled (relinquishing control of your character to take control of the target.)
As a hunter you currently can NOT Eyes of the Beast the MC'ed person to take direct control of them
That comment makes me inclined to believe it does
not
function as a Mind Control spell, despite the wording.
If they despawn your current pet this will be less than stellar for a Warlock or Hunter.
I'm hoping it makes them a friendly "Guardian". Anyone know for sure?

When you use this item, one of 4 things can happen...
It succeeds almost instantly.
It fails almost instantly.
It backfires and your character becomes mind controlled
A purple beam links you to your target, engaging in a "mental battle". This always seems to end in a draw, with neither you or the target gaining control.
If successful against an NPC target, you'll get get a standard pet bar and gain access to the NPC's abilities. If it's an enemy player, telling it to Attack a target will cause the player to start using his abilities at random.
Super fun to start large pulls with, or to make warlocks kill their own pets!

Had some fun in Ulduar today with this I MC'ed one of the patrolling trash mobs to Thorim and engaged the other with my new pet, the raid was confused as to what was happening. In the end the tanks still needed to pick them up but it was fun. Oh and Ice Block helped when they both ran for me ;-p

This thing rocks, no question about it!
When you use it, there is a chance that one of four things will happen (as Stupiful said)
Most of the time, it seems like it succeeds at controlling your target!
When you control anyone, who is a player controlled target, you'll get the ability to use anyone of his abilities randomly. When you press attack with, i.e. A mage, you have a chance of using any of his abilities.
I was fighting two hordes, a mage and a rogue, I mind-controlled the mage, and pressed attack. He ran towards the rogue, as he passed by me, he buffed me with his Arcane intellect. Then he Pom-pyro'ed the rogue, I had a great laugh! :D
This thing rock, and I use it EVERYTIME it's off cooldown! :D

As a pve note. It works just fine in the Thorim 25-man Ulduar fight to MC Warbringers. I use this chant rather than a stam def helm enchant as im way over def cap and this has more stam. A simple /tar and /use macro and i was having a warbringer killing off the adds in arena portion just fine. As well during the duration your raid will (as mine did) receive the Aura of Celerity buff as long as you have him as a pet. No priest has to bother, though it is far more temporary. It has some minimal use as a quick mini heroism. Also I had zero Failures on each MC attempt and did it several times now. Also worked on the evokers. Although they are less usefull.

This tinker is quite sad when put in the hands of a pet class. You have to disable your pet to be able to use it.
To disable your pet and use this tinker, however, press this macro:

Another factor not mentioned about it is this 'buff' will not be able to apply to a helm that already has a right click ability, like the epic engineering goggles with there far sight ability.
I was really &*!@ed off when I found this out as it would be a dam sight better for leveling my rogue with this, and fun in pvp, and I don't want to have to settle for a crappy blue helm until I get to lv80.

I just made this today, as a lv74 mindcontrolling a 80 ret paladin with conquer gear and 3 shooting a 78 warlock in AV surely made me smile, this is a MUST have item for any engineer!

Been having some fun with it now, using it on both players and npc's.
Players seem to be able to trinket out of it, that's a shame.
I've found it useful to cap the SP aid station gy in AV; use one of the elite npc's to attack the guards and cap the gy yourself.
Though all in all I don't think I'll be using it for anything really significant. Just for some laughs I guess :)
edit: more weird stuff. I tried using it on an NPC in AV and it backfired. I started attacking my own raid members. When the effect was gone, the NPC turned gray, as if someone else tagged it.

I have found that this enhancement actually shines the most as a tank. Charge in, MC one of the enemies, let it help you DPS while you tank. When the MC wears off you've got a good bit of hate on the mob so it will focus on you. Plus, 45stam is better than the rep tanking enchant if you are defense capped otherwise. All in all a very nice engineering/tank perk, especially now that it doesn't change the helm graphic.
Caveat: Assuming it works. Otherwise... heh. Tired brain is slow.
Random thought: be cool if Engineers got some (definitely expensive) thing they could apply that would make it so the device/item it was applied to lost its backfire/fail chance. Some sort of unique upgrade so that you'd have to pick a single item at any given time to have that "failsafe" on. With maybe iLevel/other reqs or something.

THIS IS AN AMAZING TINKER FOR HUNTERS!
I was in storm peaks when suddendly a paladin attacked me, first reaction was to whip out frost trap/disengage. Paladin trinkets out and comes at me i sart kiting him he freedoms blablabla you know the drill. He get close gets a hit and gets mind controlled. He must have wondered what the *!@# was going on since when you mind control a other character he uses random abilities when you press attack. So I spam attack, he uses BoP on me, throws me a heal and he then bubbled out of my MC 5 sec before it broke. I am not sure if he bubbled or if the attack button made him bubble but in any case many of his CD's were off and i then proceeded to kite him down. It made my day. All this to say that it completely kills melee mobs with CD's like rogues and paladins, I wonder if CoS would break the effect?

just to add one thing about the Mental Battle. Its actually quiet usefull, you cant trinket out from it. Nothing is gonna prevent others from killing your target while you channel it since it dosnt break from damage (well paladins and their bubble can get out from it but they would just waste it).

For use in BGs:
As mentioned above you can control an enemy player near a cliff, jump off and use your parachute. When your controlled player first walks over the cliff to follow you he will behave like NPCs sometimes do on cliffs, sticking to the cliff in a buggy looking way. As you fall away the enemy player will go out of range and become hostile again, no longer behave like an NPC, and fall to their deaths.
It's possible that a warlock could do this then teleport back onto the cliff as soon as the target goes hostile again and falls down, but my warlock is not an engineer so I can't try it.
Rogues and Druids can restealth while the target is controlled. This is particularly useful for Feral druids who can get very valuable control from being about to re-use Pounce in combat as it is not on the same DR as their other stuns. Rogues will also benefit from a free Cheap Shot in this way, but rogues have Vanish where ferals don't.
Similarly, you will go out of combat and can get in a few drink ticks while they are controlled, provided you are ready to deal with the situation as soon as the control breaks.
If you have DoTted the target before you mind control them, they continue to take damage when friendly. As such it is very useful for classes with powerful DoTs. You can essentially control someone to death if you DoT them up at medium low HP then control them and watch the DoTs tick.

It Appears the Mind control leaves the enemies with pretty decent A.I. I used it on a ret paladin who was playing bodyguard for a squishy Hunter and shaman, he popped wings and just destroyed the 2 of them, was really amusing to watch.

After thinking on it a while, and disgusted that I won't be able to use this on my epic engineering goggles, I decided to put it on my Deepdive Helmet. Easy to spot in my bag, I keep it anyway as it still comes in handy so it's not taking up an extra slot and makes that helm 50stam so I don't drop a bunch of stam when I'm using it.

PVP utility aside, this is also a nice tanking enchant. Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector (

) is often regarded as the ONLY option for a tank's head enchant, but, frankly, once your stats are up, that 20 defense rating is nothing thanks to diminishing returns. I'll take the extra stamina from the Dish, thanks...even a marginal improvement is an improvement.

Pallys can bubble out of it, since Divine Shield behaves like a trinket on use (trinkets can break MC as well).

It affects Druids just as well as it affects other classes. This isn't a form of Polymorph, it's a CC.
As for the people replacing the rep tank enchant with this, the rep enchant gives 20 additional defense rating, which adds to your avoidance even if you're crit-capped (defense-capped means crit capped -- mobs can't crit you anymore; but it doesn't mean defense does any less in terms of reducing damage). The MAD adds 8 additional Stamina, which increases when you get hit with Blessing of Kings or Sanc.
If you're wondering which would be more useful, it depends on your tank style really. If you're a tank who prefers avoidance, go for the rep enchant; if you want to soak more damage, use this. The MC ability is a bonus and nothing more.

Some issues:
Don't use it on paladins - they will just bubble.
You can trinket out of it afaik.
Backfire can be useful sometimes, as seen in Unmercey 8 pvp video (?).
I use it extensively in BGs as a feral - and have never seen it backfire on me while in form. In fact, I've never seen it backfire ...probably since I'm almost 99% of the time in form.
SOMETHING is causing a 20second cooldown on this. Investigating now.

This is a great thing for any engineer. I had some pretty epic situations with this.
I was fighting ret paladin, then hunter comes in, they bring me down to 1k hp, and then I use mind control on pally and pop ice block. Pally pops wings, gives me 15k heal and then destroys hunter. I had a very good laugh that time :)

The first couple patches when Ulduar was added, the first mobs after XT (humanoids and mechanical) were mind controllable. This made pulls a little too easy because it allowed pulls to be reduced by at least one.

wish blizzard would make it so that hunters/locks could use this w/out first dismissing their own pet. It's not like having multiple pets is unheard of. Balance druids and enhancement shaman both have mechanics commonly used which allow a player to control multiple mobs. Back in the day, hunters could use mechanical dragonlings with their pet as well. It's not like we can send the MC'ed player to specific targets, anyway. I believe it's completely done with AI.

Anybody know if you can still Dark Pact players with this? The tooltip says "... of your summoned demons mana." so I'm thinking no, but one of the first posts mentions it and I don't see any comments about it since...
I could see using this to have some fun with a pally, just fear to get the trinket out of the way and then MC while trink is on CD and dark pact all the mana away... aaaand dead pally :P

instead of /use do /use 6 That will make you use your helmet regardless of which one your using. Which is handy so you wont have to re-write your macros every time you change helmets ( pve/pvp/upgrades )

Amusingly, it's possible to MC a player with this, wait until you drop out of combat, then mount up on a flying mount and fly off, which results in the player pursuing you on foot at your mounted movement speed.
Opens up all sorts of amusing ways to cause death, such as dragging them through dozens of aggressive creatures, making them run into an outpost of their own faction to be killed by guards, or having them follow you too far out into fatigue water for them to swim back to safety in time.

Probably my favorite enchant for cata simply because it doesn't have horrendous consequences.
Worst case is you get MC'd and then aoe'd down by your allies >.>
Just watch out for tremor totem because I'd imagine the mind control would be removed.

This Tinkering enchant is HIGHLY underrated. As a Blood Death Knight I personally choose this enchant over both

. While the effect itself is fairly situational, the times it can be used it works very nicely.

This enchant when used on an enemy NPC makes it your "pet" for
30 seconds
(10 seconds on other players), 10 minute cooldown. This debuff makes the NPC act like a pet, you can make it Attack, Follow, and Move To, put it in Assist, Defensive, or Passive Stance, and use up to
4 of the NPC's abilities
(4 random abilities of the players class on enemy players). With the ability to use the NPC as a pet, it is basically a glorified form of crowd control =).
When used wisely on trash, you can use it to pull roflstompin damage for you to kill the whole group quickly. Two examples I like are
in Zul'Gurub and

in Zul'Aman who both have insane AoE for the last trash pull before bosses. It might even pull aggro off you in some situations!
What I like the most about this enchant is its
low malfunction rate
. Unlike the Nitro Boosts and the Grounded Plasma Shield, this enchant works correctly the majority of the time, and even when it fails it is rarely deadly. From my experience, here's an approximation on the uses...

This Tinker is probably the most commonly thought of enchant. Upon use you are granted the buff

which increases your movement speed by 150% for 5 seconds, 3 minute cooldown. This enchant is much less situational than the Mind Control enchant, however it also has an

malfunction chance even after the nerf. I find this enchant still malfunctions for me more than works properly, especially when I need the boost most.
Here is another approximation on the uses. The backfires seem to proc significantly less out of combat...
< 40% of the time - Successful boost.
> 40% of the time - Backfires, debuff

for 8 seconds. Not too bad, it is AMS-able, however 80% of your health is still a lot, especially when you are tanking. Even using AMS puts in on cooldown instead of letting you use it when you need it more.
< 20% of the time - Backfires, you are knocked into the air. Not necessarily too bad on its own, especially considering this malfunction comes with a parachute (most of the time =) ), however
IF YOU ARE TANKING, YOUR AGGRO ON ANYTHING TARGETING YOU WILL RESET
. This malfunction wiped a Conclave run
3 times in a row
due to lost aggro before I stopped using the enchant altogether.

Lastly the bubble enchant. This enchant when used grants about an 18k absorbtion bubble (

) on a 5 minute cooldown. This is the most

situational enchant of the three, however the 5 minute cooldown is fairly high for an 18k bubble and the backfires are terrible. On the flipside, this enchant will grant positive outcomes much more often than negative, unlike the Nitro Boosts.
More approximations... now you will see why the debuffs are "terrible". They all have a good chance of messing up or wiping an encounter.

These are just my ideas on the enchants and which one I use. When it comes down to it there is no "best" belt enchant as they're all flawed and situational, unlike the glove enchants.

I don't know if it's pure luck or a hotfix, but in the past week 4/5 times I've used the Mind Amplification dish in dungeons it backfired... which is slightly more then my usual twice in half a year. I might stick with the

My favorite trick is when fighting a Death Knight, wait for them to start summoning their Army of the Dead. Activate the item and when you MC them, their ghouls will tear them apart. Set them to passive and just watch the show. If they survive, and some do, they're weak enough to take down with little effort.

Tried this in pvp:
You cannot use other players' abilities, but it will randomly cast one of the spells from their spellbook. It also seems to have a bit of AI intelligence. For example: you control a class that has healing abilities and you are low on health, it will heal you with one of the healing spells. When you mind control a mage, it will cast frostbolt on random enemies.
It has a chance to fail. Out of about 7-8 uses it backfired once(I got mind controlled), 1 it stunned the enemy(channeling spell), and other times it mind controlled the other player.
In pve, it haven't failed yet, but probably will. When you control humanoid mob, you can directly control one of it's abilities and it usually lasts for full time.(20 seconds)

Isn't it strange that it requires 350 engineering to use, but 410 to actually be able to learn and apply on _your own_ belt. How many people levelup profession to 400+, drop it and then re-level it?

It also blows your cool downs, I had someone put this on my mage and it had me cast presence of mind and put down a cooking fire, and both were on CD when I came out of the MC.

I don't know if something has changed recently, but I just tried to use this in Tol Barad and got an error message saying "Cannot be used in a Rated Battleground." I know in the past I have been able to use this to MC the enemy in Tol Barad. Very strange.
Edit: Apparently this is a known issue dating back to at least August. TB is being treated like a rated BG at least as far as engy tinkers are concerned and even food/drinks. Doesn't seem anyone is in a big hurry to fix it though. Sigh.

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, but when this tinker successfully gives you control of an enemy, they get a
magic
debuff. I'm not sure who can dispell it though, since they count as enemies towards their healers for its duration. It would also be pretty inconvenient if your healers mistakenly dispelled the 10 minute cooldown mind control from them.
Also, as of this post you can't manually activate the target's abilities(they aren't on the pet bar or pet tab in the spell book), but they'll do it themselves when in AI mode. If it is just you vs them with no one else in combat with either of you(like in a duel)when you use this, they will usually cast heals on you(if they have healing spells) even if they are a DPS, since there is nothing to attack. Dueled a Ret paladin, and when I controlled him he used wings and cast Holy Radiance on me although he is not Holy.

Still not able to use on engineering goggles in WotLK Classic. Bug report has been filed with Blizzard, however it does not look like they will reverse it. :(
