This guy was strange. First, he constantly summons shadows of random party members. they do a lot more damage than the copied! He keeps summoning them, so don't just tank them, they need to die. Around 20%, he summons and 'avatar' that hits really hard. Down Exarch first, and battle loot, because it's easy to wipe on the second guy (and he keeps summoning shadows until you kill him, so he needs to go down first).

This guy uses mortal strike on the tank, and creates a darkside of players. As he does, he deals about 3000 damage and knocks the player down. The darkside must be killed swiftly, as they can potentionally do much damage, depending of whom got cloned. At about 10-15%, he will summon an avatar of the martyred. This new add hits very hard, and also has mortal strike. Focus at killing Maladaar at this point.

This is a very easy fight once you learn what's going on properly.
Our group consisted of a Warrior, Priest, Hunter, Warlock and Mage.
Warrior's job is simple - tank Exarch. That's all he has to do.
Priest's job is obviously to heal. I was the Priest, and stood as much as I could in the open.
The other three DPS classes stood grouped together away from both tank and Priest. They pulled the Shades from me and killed them.
At 30% when the Avatar was summoned, we had the Hunter's pet tank it, and quickly killed Exarch. After that, get the tank to pick up the Avatar and kill it.
An easy fight that's only hard if you don't kill the Shades as they spawn. The positioning of the classes helped a lot too.
Congrats on your new loot. :)

He is realy easy on Heroic. You can nuke him realy fat... but remember the spawns. At 25% he will summon avatar witch is a bit harder than normal. Try your tank to tank both boss and avatar and nuke boss asap, than kill avatar... nothing special

On Heroic, done by a Protection Paladin, Enh. Dual Wield Shaman, a Hunter, a Shadowpriest and me, a healing priest.
We got Shirrak on the first try, and Maladaar on second.
His abilities are like others noted the same as in normal mode, they just do some more damage.
Again priority on the clones.
Maladaar however, in addition to Ribbon of Souls, ranged shadow attack, and the Stolen Soul ability, he also periodically fears for a short duration.
This can be countered with a proper stancedancer, but it went alright for us too.
The Avatar he summons around 20% however does a powerful Mortal Strike ability, which hit our tank for 6k on 12000 armor.
Make sure you kill Maladaar and if you can, the avatar afterwards, but you can go for the Maladaar kill, wipe, run back.
Do not leave the avatar for what it is, it drops loot now too, and alone, it's an easy kill.
We got the Wave-Song Girdle and the Harvester of Souls and a Primal Nether from Maladaar, Will of the Fallen Exarch from the Avatar.
Good luck!

Pretty easy kill on heroic. Just make shure your tank can absorb some damage and has enough avoidance to survive even with a Mortal Strike on him.
Got him downed on first try with 2 Shadowpriests, Warlock and Resto Shaman

Much easier on heroic than the first boss, which took us about ten tries. Two shadow priests, a holy priest, an elemental shaman and me as a warrior tanking. I just picked up the avatar when he spawned and taunted the last shadow clone at the same time. The party finished off Maladaar while I held aggro on both him and the spawn. Shield wall helped a bundle and I popped Last Stand when my health suddenly plummeted. Make sure to keep demo and tc up and use all your cooldowns, because it really helps. I have about 12K armor and 25% block. My defense is still just under 490 but it didn't seem to make a difference.

It was an interesting fight. I strongly advise taking out the Adds as soon as they arrive just like you do against Sheffar. It will be fatal if Maladaar summons his minon while there are still adds alive because they automatically went after my healer and it was impossible to keep both the main tank and the off-tank healed (Especially with the mortal strike on the off-tank).
If you manage to take down Maladaar while his adds are still alive they will not fade, so unless you can SS or reincarnate from a safe distance you will need to run back and rest up before killing the adds and looting Maladaar.

As there was no "story" section at the top of this page, I thought I might as well add his backstory (or what I know of it):
Exarch Maladaar is the leader of a sect of Draenei "death priests" called the Auchenai Death Cult. Originally, they were apparently just a bunch of peaceful undertakers tending the huge amount of graves in Auchindoun.
During the uprising of the Horde and the invasion of Draenor by the Alliance Expedition, Auchindoun switched hands a number of times. Later, the Shadow Council even blew half the thing up by summoning Murmur. Some of the Auchenai apparently managed to survive, however, and are still watching over the most ancient section of the complex (namely, the grave of the naaru D'ore).
Not too long ago, however, Maladaar and most of his followers for some reason took up interest in necromancy (at least one of the cults members, Ramdor the Mad, was opposed to this and left the cult). At the time of the Burning Crusade expansion, Maladaar and the remaining Auchenai have retreated into the Crypts and are supposedly attempting to raise an army of the dead. Luckily, that's where our brave bunch of heroes steps in.
It can be noted that on another side of the Auchindoun complex, an eredar named Levixus is trying to summon another undead army for the Legion. He doesn't seem to mind Maladaar and his crazy gang of funeral directors too much, however.

If you have a priest in the group, this boss can be incredibly easy. The elites with skeletons surrounding them are MCable and have a drain life that ticks for ~1k. Your group can keep one alive after all the skeleton groups are dead, and have one of these tank. (To get in range of pulling you'll probably have to break your MC and reapply it a time or two after moving yourself closer to the boss, but their melee damage isn't high, even in heroic, and should be easily healable. Also your tank can taunt them while you reposition)
Once in range, use the MC'd mob to pull the boss, and immediately start Draining him. You can also heal the group for a sizable amount with the mob's AoE heal which has virtually no cooldown. The only issue is when the MC gets disoriented, though it doesn't last long and whoever takes aggro should be able to live until the disorient wears off.
Since the mob will heal himself, even the main healer can perform this trick, though spell hit keeps MC from breaking early so be careful and be ready to pick the MC back up if it does break. Also try to keep yourself close to the MCd mob since the farther you are from it the higher the chance it'll break.
When I did it, the MC timer ran out just as we were killing the Avatar of the Martyr, which did cause one of our DPS to die. Regardless, it was by far the easiest kill of this boss I've ever had since there's effectively no healer aggro this way. If you have a shadow priest do the MC I'm sure it'd be even easier, as your healer can be an emergency healer for when it breaks.

His fear is more of a disorient effect similar to Dragon's Breath. You kind of wander about instead of running in one direction.

Solo'ed last night as a 80 SL/SL lock.. actually could walk right past everything else in the instance, including the first boss.
Quite easy fight as long as you use drain life, siphon life and bandages to keep your health up.
Tricky part is when the Avatar spawns at 25%, solved this by having a curse of doom proc around then to finish him off.. can be a bit hard to keep the felguard alive for very long against both mobs.

I was able to solo him as an 80 arcane mage. Pretty easy fight. You can get to him without pulling any mobs, though I cleared the room around him. My gear isn't anything special, craftables / heroics. You'll want to keep up mana shield at all times. Use your gem once you're down ~4k mana. I'd recommend bringing a mana pot and using it when you're down ~4k again.
Don't open with your cooldowns. Do use mirror image once he starts hitting on you. Do not use invisibility to drop him off you if he doesn't switch to a clone; your mana pool should be able to deal with him just fine. Dps him down to the point where he summons the avatar, killing shades along the way. He'll summon the avatar around ~15k; blow AP / PoM now. Kill him as fast as you can and then use invisibility, dropping combat. Take a few steps before dropping out as the avatar may not despawn, but just reset.

Heh... I read all of these comments on soloing him and thought "If a mage could do it, I can do it!"
I didn't think... they were all talking about normal, not heroic ;-)
As a feral druid in Nax10 gear, I managed to solo this place on heroic, but each boss fight was a suicide run. The first guy was a pain; his bite stacks up quick and REALLY hurts when it's ticking for 1k+ DPS (well, 3k every 3 seconds).
This guy was slightly easily, IMO. The important part is to down your copy asap. Unlike most adds, your copy canNOT get hit by AoE (including Swipe nor Glyph of Maul). But if you use those attacks on your copy, they will hit the boss too! So, attack the copy first. I would recommend shifting out to heal before the avatar comes out but immediately after you get disoriented (make sure your copy is down too). Barkskin + Heals --> Shift back. Not sure how much his melee did, but I never worried; the thing that hurt more was his Ribbon of Souls... when it wasn't resisted. Which it was most of the time.
Anyway, managed to down him with the avatar and a soul copy up. I would recommend just popping Berserk and focusing fire on the boss once the avatar comes out. He drops quick anyway, and that will ensure that you win. Use SI if you're getting to the wire at the end.

Soloed on Heroic as an 80 Hunter. If you wish to do the same: Here is some advice.
1) Spec survival if you aren't already.
2) Get a Warp Stalker.
3) Turn off all the autocasts except Growl and Warp
4) If your soul gets stolen, FD, let your pet die, and reset the encounter. You will not be able to keep your pet alive through the 50% healing debuff.
5) If your pet gets stunned by Soul Scream, FD immediately so Maladaar goes back to hammering on your pet, you want to stay AS FAR AWAY FROM HIM AS POSSIBLE <--Important.
The main thing here is that Soul Steal = game over please try again. There are 2 ways that you can deal with it.
1) LoS it. I was doing it this way for awhile and only going into LoS to Mend Pet, but when it came time to burn him down my soul got stolen and in addition to 50% less healing, I do 50% less damage too. This strategy will more than likely not work for you.
2) Outrange it. Soul Steal has a 40 yard range. If you spec Surv you can stay at max range and attack him but be out of the range of soul steal. Just move into range every so often to mend your pet and hope he doesn't Soul Steal you at that precise moment. This is more luck than anything. I'd say you have a 15% chance of getting hit with a Soul Steal when mending your pet, but those odds are tons better than the LoS tactic which I'd estimate to be closer to 50%.
Use MD often and go slowly cause Explosive Shot is a threat generating machine, and also so you can heal your pet in between. You may need to switch into Viper halfway into the fight. But as long as you keep Mend Pet up and you stay far away you're good.
When he summons his avatar just go balls out on Maladaar and he should drop before the avatar reaches you since you're 40+ yards away. (He won't despawn so have a FD ready.)

And one more thing, if you're like me and realized that your pet will have to tank, you probably thought "Oh, BM will probably be best." It's not. I tried it, it failed, I then discovered the range on Soul Steal, respecced back to Survival, and then downed him on my second try.
Although if you're BM you can actually heal your pet through the debuff if your soul gets stolen, with BM you are forced to use the LoS strategy which is not nearly as reliable as outranging him.
But the most important issue is that BM does
NOT
have enough burst to take down Maladaar in time after he summons his avatar. Even as BM and without the debuff, your pet CANNOT tank them both and live for very long, the avatar hits even harder than Maladaar.

Simple enough. I just opened up on him with Water Elemental+Icy Veins+Engineer haste gloves+Trinket, DPSed him down fairly quickly. I popped mirrors at 40-50%ish, invised after he died so I didn't have to kill the Avatar before getting a chance to recover. Didn't really need cold snap, but used it anyway.
1532SP/17% crit/16k health/123 haste.
Probably would've been simpler still if I'd ever done the instance before and actually knew what he did. Meh.

Just finished soloing on heroic as a lvl 80 BM hunter. Didn't seem as bad as everyone is saying. It does get a little rough when the avatar spawns, as you now have 2 mobs beating on your pet, with one of the adding a mortal strike debuff. Just finish burning Maladaar down and switch to the avatar. If you fd when the copy spawns, it will simply despawn as long as you are far enough away from your pet.

Soloed heroic version as an 80 prot warrior.
It took me a few tries, but I finally found a strategy that worked. He will make a copy of yourself...don't kill it. The ability that he uses to make a copy of you is his hardest hitting spell. I tried to spell refect the Ribbon of Souls as much as possible. I potted, used Last Stand, and Enraged Regeneration. I tried to save Shield Wall for when the Avatar spawns.
The copy spell will run out at some point, so you want to dps him before he makes a second copy. I unfortunately did not have enough dps so he made a second copy. He spawned the avatar and I was fortunately able to kill him before I died. The avatar doesn't hit for much, but all of it was enough to kill me after the Exarch was down.

I'm farming the Exarch as a level 80 prot paladin on heroic, day after day for those damn
Doomplate Legguards
(and maybe an
Auchenai Death Shroud
if I'm lucky). My basic strategy is to pop wings a split second before using Avenger's Shield, then try to burn him down while using Shadow Resistance Aura, keeping Divine Plea up and reusing Avenger's Shield whenever possible. I focus on the clone whenever it pops, which can be EXTREMELY annoying as a paladin because the ability it chooses to use is Hammer of Justice, rendering all your mitigation useless for 4 seconds. Nevertheless, I push on, kill the clones when they're up, and burn the hell out of the Exarch. When he calls the Avatar, I leave it alone and try to burn the Exarch as much as possible, and if I'm lucky, he'll die before popping a clone. Then, it's a simple matter of killing the avatar and you should be golden. I'm being OP with my health and using Seal/Judgement of Light, so that's probably why I survive against this onslaught of mortal strikes, 11k clonings, stuns, and fears.

Lvl 80 demo specced lock. About half my gear is just standard PvP gear (the rest being from lvl 170+ blues).
I'm doing all the dungeons for the achievements...and I soloed this guy easily. I had him down to 30% before he did a soul steal. I just popped a few dots and forgot about him. When the Avatar spawned, I had Maladaar down to about 10%. Put my Felguard on the Avatar (he was holding both aggros). Dropped them both and my Felguard still had about 8500 health (I didn't have to heal him).
He was a breeze. Honestly, Shiraak gave me more trouble (died once, and almost died the second time).
I didn't run this on heroic, though.
They've either made it easier, or these people running in Naxx gear are doing something wrong. If they aren't running heroic versions...I can't understand how they're having trouble. Maybe it's a class thing.

Here is the rundown of how to solo him as a Protection Warrior: or at least, it worked alright for me.
First off, the real killer is his Soul Steal. Once he does this, do not kill the copy-he will just cast it again. If he casts it twice, you are in trouble; three times, you are out.
So now you are fighting at half health with half damage-TC and Demoralizing Shout your heart out. The add doesn't hit very hard, but you will be fighting him much longer with them up. Use all of your single target attacks because you don't want to kill the copy of you. Glyph of Shield Wall is really handy (as a tank you should have it anyways) as it is a great way to start the fight, or if you are quick, use it during the Soul Steal (not sure if it reduces that damage). If you have it glyphed, you will be able to use it at the start of the fight and when the Avatar joins the fun.
The Ribbon of Souls is a confusing little spell he has-I was unable to interrupt it, but when I had Spell Reflection up the damage seemed to disappear entirely. It didn't reflect, and I seemed to resist it. This happened every time I had Reflect up, so it is either extreme coincidence or some sort of buggy spell.
Once he summons the avatar, pop Last Stand + Enraged Regeneration (and a health boosting trinket if you have one). TC and Demoralizing shout his new buddy and continue single target attacks on Mal. If the copy dies at this point, go all out-your health buffer should keep you safe even if he does it again. You get the achieve/loot as soon as Mal dies, even if you die to his Avatar.
Good luck!
Edit: This was heroic. Also, when I say TC/Demoralizing Shout your heart out, I of course mean make sure it is up at all times-basic soloing 101.

Druid in t9 resto/naxx 25 feral gear... talking about hc
So i tried first to kill him traditionaly way in feral spec as i remembered from BC which is kill those images he makes... just to say i got owned. He casts some spell that take 30% of hp each time he summons image.
2nd try i wonted to zerg him in resto gear that went for good 10 min until i droped him to 20% (coz of his -50% dmg and healing debuff when image is up), but then he spawned his avatar and i got 2 shoted.
Then i went back for 3rd time in feral spec and i decided to just just ignore image and full nuke him saving barskin for his coils etc... i never droped below 50% hp.
Good luck!

I just solo'd him as a 68 holy paladin. The fight was extremely difficult on my own. The
soul steal
is what makes this fight extraordinarily difficult.
How I killed him:
Keeping my health at 100% was the top priority. Using holy shock and
blessed life
for holy power to use Word of Glory was my main method of doing this.
I used as many instants as possible since he will CC you very often which can interrupt your spellcasting. He has a stun and a fear which he will often use one after the other on you, and this can be during the soul steal and very frequently leads to death. Having on ret aura will help put out a few more damage points during these periods, and it can end up killing the stolen soul which will greatly help you.
When he steals your soul (which he will do many times) things get tricky. Holy Shock on the stolen soul + instant exorcism + hammer of wrath then a word of glory. You MUST keep yourself topped off and at the same time kill the stolen soul.
When he summons his avatar you should make sure there are no stolen souls out. As soon as he begins casting the summon, blow your damage CD's and make sure he gets to 20% so you can Hammer of Wrath him. When the avatar is summoned and he steals your soul, bubble and continue using HoW and Exorcism + Holy Shock. (There will be a hiatus between the summoning of the avatar and soul steal so don't blow the shield off the bat)
Good luck to anyone else trying to solo him at my level. You're in for one hell of a battle.

Just soloed him last night as a level 75 Blood DK. Was a pretty quick clear of the instance all the way up to him.
After going in with no strategy against him and dying the first time, I came here to read hints. I went back and tried a second time, this time focusing on killing my stolen soul off every time he spawned it. Bad move. I nearly killed him on my first attempt without strategy while on my second attempt I only got him down to like 30%.
Reading further comments on here, I noticed the comment about not killing your stolen souls because that just causes more damage each time they are spawned. Based on my previous two attempts, I knew the entire fight was somewhere short of 2 minutes. I looked at all my cooldowns, and knowing I'd only be able to use any given special maneuver once in the entire fight, decided on the best time for each.
My new strategy was therefore:
Bone shield up 10 seconds before fight
Horn of winter immediately prior to engaging
Initiate attack using normal opener (icy touch, plague strike)
Pop Adamantine Figurine (+ 1280 armor)
Then, until Exarch Maladaar got down to 50% health, I entered my standard survival rotation (Blood Strike/Death Strike/Rune Strike/Rune Tap) with a focus on keeping up blade shield... Rune Strike AMAP, Death Strike AMAP, Rune Tap AMAP.
In addition, this meant using my health pot earlier in the fight (but saving Vampiric Blood for later)
My standard keybinding had Heart Strike in my standard rotation since I almost always prefer it to Blood Strike. To avoid damaging stolen soul, I remapped my key to Blood Strike. Also, no blood boil.
As soon as the first stolen soul showed up, I popped anti magic shield (didn't pay attention to whether there was any magic damage going on at all, so that may have been useless) plus Icebound Fortitude. That would be the first and last time these get used in the fight.
When Exarch Maladaar got down to 50%, I summoned my ghoul.
At around 15-20% health for Maladaar, I then used Empower Rune Weapon followed immediately by Dancing Rune Weapon. I then used Death and Decay, Vampiric Blood, followed by Death Pact, Gift of the Naaru, Rune Tap, and continued survival rotation, except I switched to Heart Strike now, instead of Blood Strike.
He died very quickly after that, and I gained a huge health boost, and the aoe started working on doing away with the avatar and the stolen soul. I was able to finish them off fairly quickly after that, just by continued use of survival rotation.
The fight ended in under two minutes and I had plenty of health at the end.

If you're a level 85 or a high level with an ability that causes you to exit combat looking for lower city rep, this boss has an extremely good way of farming rep.
Around 20% he'll create an avatar that has about 47k health. By killing the avatar you'll get 250 rep (275 with guild rep perk). After you kill it, just use your combat exiting ability. I'm a night elf warrior so I just shadowmeld out.
Waiting for the cooldown for shadowmeld is 2 minutes, so i'm looking at 275 rep every 2 min and 20 sec or so, a very nice gain if you're lazy like I am.

Standard warrior/rogue anti-casting tactics work well. His cloning isn't instant. We just took him down using shield bash and kick. He only got 1 spawn off plus the avatar, which seems to happen instantly. The group was 67 War, 67 Rogue, 67 Pally, 70 Hunter and 70 Druid. I wasn't able to find out if the copies are stunnable, but the boss' mirror image is not.

Druids: Tranquility.. it will last for a long time because of his casting time increasement.

1. Keep your ranged DPS and healer at max range to avoid debuff.
2. Focus all DPS on the clones as they spawn. You want to burn them down as quickly as possible.
At 15%-20% health he spawns his other half. Clones will still appear at this point, so watch for them. Finish the boss and then the other half.

He's Cake if you know what you are doing.
i am a 64 Affliction warlock
1. he summons clones / adds. but they don't do the same things as you. they are Non-elite.
2. at 50% health (i think) he summons a clone of himself but way bigger. This Person is called Avatar Of The Matayed.
3. you must have 2 tanks, luckily we had two tanks (70 MT, 68 OT) MT goes onto maladar, Off tank goes to Avatar. Keep ALL DPS on Maladaar. if you lose to avatar itll be there once you get back.
4.you might want to prefer a lock, mage, hunter or any ranged dps for this fight to be on malaadar.
Btw....if you think Shirrak The Dread Watcher Is hard...
think again..
keep me at (+) please. i will be putting info as i do instances. and or raids. i will be putting up the notes of Shirrak the dread watcher in just a few minutes.

I wouldn't say that he's all that hard. You don't really need 2 tanks, as the above person said, as long as you have a tank who knows what he's doing. Focus should still be on burning the adds before they build up, but a good tank can hold aggro on both of them fairly easily as long as the DPS doesn't shift targets.
We downed him on heroic fairly easily by doing that with a druid tank, no losses, and no random aggro bursts from the DPS or heals. Just like Shirrak, he's simple as long as you know what you're doing. Other than that, above strategies work just fine.

You don't need two tanks, in fact we had none, although I was healing regs at 70. Just make sure you pay attention to your surroundings and look for the clones. They are basically the same avatar as you except completely black.
If you keep those dead, I fail to see why you would have any problems with this guy. He's the easiest of the two in this dungeon.

easiest boss ever...Lol shirrak is waaay harder than exarch..fastest boss fight ever...had 2 enhance shammy, shadow priest, and 2 pallys - holy nd prot. Prot went on him, we all nuked him, dps focused on clones...which were actually 3 of em.. and at about 10% of exarch's health came avatar..nuked exarch then caught avatar. whole fight took less than 1 minute :))) lol

My Frost DK at level 80 tried to solo this guy for the 1 missing Nagrand point I was away from getting Obviously I failed 3x in a row so I gave up.
While wearing, still mostly blue and some purples, I had a little over 23000 health and a little over 24000 armor and a bit over 500 in defense and 900 strength.
The battle started pretty good.. It was a slow start as usual.. After a while one of his magic attacks started hitting me for about 5000 health and suddenly I got hit by something that did OVER 10000 damage one me, I donno WHAT it was but my health was going into negative x)
I tried using chain of ice on him.. It showed up as an effect on him it actually did NOTHING and he still kept dashing for me so a bandage was out of the question (A potion was a waste of usage as it didn't even heal a pixel)
Eventually he summoned his big little buddy and 2 minutes later I died with Maladaar having about 3% of health left.. Ah well.. At least he didn't fear me.
I'm just not doing enough damage on him.. Maybe if I double my Armor and Defense I might get him down.. Unless Maladaar's damage is percentage based.. 10000 damage from a none~heroic 67er? Yikes ;)

i just tried this as 80 feral druid - on heroic mode, gotta los his casts everytime to beat this guy, otherwise if u do get hit- reduces ur dps and heals by 50% and summons an add... and u get hit for like 4500. if u manage to los him he doesnt even summon adds... he also does a dragon brealth like spell - it can *!@# you up pretty easily. gl

i soloed him on regular with an 80 arms warrior, on my first try i had 46 minutes left on my flask of endless rage and didn't kill him until i only had 8 minutes left to give u an idea of how hard he is. buffed i had 3700 AP 12500 armor and 22000 hp. i had to use the wall behind him to LOS when he cast to avoid the 10000 dmg from his stolen soul. once he was at 5% or so he got me w/ it finally and also brought out his copy of himself i was lucky to drop him and still had to return to loot him because his adds did get me after he fell, so he is able to be downed solo but be ready to duck back and forth around the wall because if he hits u with that spell ur toast. i died 4 times b4 i finally got him so if u get frustrated easy id say take a friend with you.

Solo'd him as an 80 Frost Mage - burned all cooldowns and got killed by the avatar, but you only need to kill the Exarch himself for the achievement.

If you wanna solo this as an 80 rogue, don't pop evasion until he summons the clone. As long as you interrupt his casts he doesn't hit too hard.

For you 80 prot pallies in quest blues, here is a tip that might help you solo this guy without too much irritation: just focus on Maladaar. Ignore your annoying HoJ-tossing friend, even ignore the avatar. Burn the boss down as fast as you can first.
Why? Because he will resummon the you-clone right quick after you kill it and he'll keep doing that till you kill him. Keep your SS and HS up, watch your mana and heal when you need to.

What a major pain in the ass! Attempted and failed to solo both as a lvl 80 fury and prot warrior. Some of the early comments on this one must have been before some patch, since the Stolen Soul now inflicts 10K damage. Stolen Soul cannot be interrupted with Shield Bash or reflected with Spell Reflection. I haven't been able to figure out how to get out of the line of sight in close combat. By ignoring the "Dark Side", I've been able to stay alive until the Avatar was summoned, but that's about the best I can do.

Reasonably easy (non-heroic) solo for the ach, as a decently-geared 80 subt rogue; I died from the avatar just after killing the boss, so I had to stealth all the way back in to loot him. If I'd taken the fight a little more seriously (buffed etc.) it probably would have been no problem.
It's a nice simple instance, too; no reason to kill anything but the bosses. Might not even have to kill the floating head on the way in, come to think of it (but I did just for fun).

If your group wipes while he's making clones of your party (as our group did) it's actually not such a bad thing. When you all come back you'll only have him to deal with because the close all vanish when you die.

Drops from maladaar 10% of the time.
Strategy to beat him: tank focusses on m aladaar. The instant a clone pops, group focuses on clone while tank continues with maladaar. When Maladaar's second form pops, everyone unloads on maladaar then cleans up the rest.
Me 68 rogue against a 64 Druid who selected need. In party I congratulated & stayed classy. Here I'm gonna lay it out: to all you !@#$ face druids who roll on dps %^&*, die and go to hell or don't *!@#$ if we roll on leather gear with +healing on it. Get the point? We can't go as healers or tanks. So unless you're willing to give up your BoP leather gear with + spirit, healing, int, str, etc., don't roll on dps *!@# as your #1 priority. Wait for the classes who can only play as dps to obtain their dps gear, then you can have the luxury of stocking up on your own dps #$%^.

was on my rogue ... solo grindin and saw someone spam for a priest for this place... and i asked hey what's the min lvl? i kinda knew 63 was too low but figured what the heck they might have some 70s or something ... asked and they said 63 was fine enough .. invited ... we had a 67 druid ( tank ) two paladins ( like 66 or something ) and a 68 hunter. one of the paladins helped me off heal.
well we wiped the first try on the first boss... i suggested that we fight him at the top of the stairs ... work very clean. then we made out way to the last boss... downed him first try and he dropped the staff, they let me have it ^^.
we only wiped the once.

Druids have every right to dps gear, as long as they are spec'd that way.
Yes we can fill in a variety of rolls, but our talents determine what we are good at, a feral druid with good gear dps very very well, and guess what? they can off heal and tank if need be? why even take a rogue when a druids available?
You ignorant people don't see the big picture and think because its a hybrid you get preference on drops, he was there and has equal right to call need.

My groups stratagy that was effective even with my lower level priest(62) as main healer...
Main tank hold Maladaar(obviously), as stated, his damage is not too terrible. Just popped a few renews through most of the battle. All out DPS Maladaar at start until he starts pulling shadow adds of party members on you.
After adds come focus all DPS on them, leaving the tank to wear down Maladaar.
Do this because you can drop them fairly quickly leaving them one at a time, rather than ending up with a group of them to deal with.
After the 20% mark and he pull out his 2x size avatar, have an off tank get on him to keep him off the healer/dps and go all out on Maladaar. He will still pull a shadow add or more depending on how fast you can kill him. The avatar does some stiff damage, but after Maladaar is dead, dropping the avatar is pie.
Hope this was a help for a full strategy on him, worked for us:
62 priest
65 warrior
70 pally
70 mage
70 druid
all of which were not geared in anything epic whatsoever ^^

He does a spel on the Target that does damage, but global his damage on the Warrior isn't much. He also spawns adds 2-3 times in the fight, they do insane damage, and are immune for most of the slowing spells, so kill em a.s.a.p. At 20%, he spawn an extra add, 66-67 elite, that does also alot of damage.
Btw, wacht out for the packs before Exarch Maladaar, they do Souldrain = 1000dmg a second.
