One of the last things turned in for the AQ gates to open is the wool bandages. These things can be found in large quantity from low level mobs. From my experience can sell for up to 1g per stack. Not too good for making money though.

I disagree with buliwyf. Here is the fastest way to get tons of wool. Especially when you are 15+.
1: Get a level 40-60 friend or guild member.
2: Go to Deadmines (must be level 17-24)
3: When inside change the loot to Free for All.
4: When inside Instance loot everything (even the miners they drop most of the wool)
5: When you are at the ship do not go under the Bridge that links up.
6: Make sure the 60 is satisfied (give him a tip!)
That is the way of getting tons of Wool (and Linen Cloth). At the end of each run you should get 80 pieces of Wool.

Although deadmines sometimes drops wool, usually it drops linen cloth for the majority of it. Id recommend someplace like Shadowfang Keep or purely finding wild mobs and just grind them. If you find a wild mob that drops wool, just continue killing them until the desired mount is attained. When you are in a group in an instance all the loot is shared. So if you dont have a higher leveled friend.... the best way is to just grind mobs outside.

Ferris Isle.. the Gnolls
there drop about 35%-45% of the time and its usually 2pc. so in about 2 minutes, you can farm a stack.. "assumeing that you dont have to worry about health"... currently with the expansion out.. too many noobs think they can sell a 20 stack for 4g.. its probably the lamest thing since x20 at 3g

I found that the Foulweald furbolgs in Ashenvale (Greenpaw Village - 54, 62) were good enough for me to grind wool.
Reason why I went there was because they also drop a boatload of Operating pages that sell for 20s each.
I also got a whole lot of green items every 6-7th furbolg.

If you are level 10-20, pay for someone to run you through VC. Lots of linen, wool, blues, greens, and XP at those levels. It's usually 1-2g per run, and you gather about 5g worth of Mat's.
20+, pay for a stockade run. I'm not sure how much those fetch for nowadays, but it shouldn't be that expensive. Stockade gets a few linens, LOTS of wool, and about a half a stack of silk. I grabbed a green , and a blue + defense ring in a run through it.
Very good for a Rogue to run through the Stock, seeing as some of the chests are locked.

Stocks isn't hard to get too, get naked, run in, you'll die a few times, easier if you got a mount you may never die, I did this on my warlock getting my new mages Tailoring up, when you exit to reset get naked to save your repair bills because you just may die =D Other then that, easy.

The farm in western Hillsbrad Foothills also seems to be a very nice location to farm Wool Cloth, due to the fact that all mobs in this location are humanoids. Also, it's filled with them, and there a lot of quests you can do while farming, which also builds up some nice ammount of XP. Try it out.

Wool Cloth is a huge seller when you are a low level. It is your biggest money maker because you can begin getting it at such a low level. The place place to farm for Wool Cloth is the graveyard in Duskwood. The area is called “The Raven Hill Cemetery”. Inside of this area you will find plenty of Undead mobs, ranging from levels 20-28. You will find skeletons and ghouls.
All of these mobs have a great chance of dropping Wool Cloth. Most of the big raiding guilds on servers used this spot to farm Wool for the opening of AQ, so you can understand how great of a spot this is.

I would recommend stockades to horde also... if you have a level 70 stealther you can get in without any trouble at all. You get 4-5 stacks of wool per clear and a load of BoE greens you can AH or DE. The mobs each drop up to 4 pieces of wool, with the average being about 2 when you factor in those that don't drop any. You also get a little bit of silk and a tiny bit of linen.

It's about a 6 second repop rate there. Just watch your back if you are on a PvP server. It won't take you too long to get your wool/linen. Happy Hunting!

Best place I've found, hands down (for Horde), is Agama'gor. It's north of Camp Taurajo in The Barrens and is filled with Bristleback mobs with a very fast respawn rate. The mobs are only level 15-18 so they're really easy to kill if you're high level. I managed to get 47 wool cloth in 35 minutes.
An added benefit to farming here is you can 1) ride your mount from one small encampment to the next and 2) you gather Blood Stone shards along the way. You can turn-in 10 of these shards to the person locked in the cage at Camp Taurajo to get the Spirit of the Wind buff which gives you increased run speed for 5 minutes, which makes farming that much faster. When the speed buff is about to expire, I ride back to Camp T. and sell all items I don't want and get rebuffed again.
Update: 100 wool in 1 hour, solo farming as an Affliction spec level 70 Warlock.

Alright, though I figured I would throw in my two cents on the matter of where to farm for wool as a member of the Horde.
Basically, you can
not
get any better than Thistlefur Village which is located at about (36,37) in Ashenvale. The mobs here around around 26-30, which makes them great for mid-level players as far as experience goes; also making them a breeze to be smited by higher level players.
To give you a run down on how well this place works, I farmed for merely an hour, and walked out with 122 Wool, 97 Linen, and 18 silk. This is based on me being a level 59 Feral Druid. Breaking that down, we're looking at 2 Wool per minue spent walking around. :D Not too shabby.
Furthermore, I came out with three decent greens, one blue, 4.5g in pure gold, and two completed quests because I was a slacker in Ashenvale earlier on.
So ladies and gentlemen, if you're a tailor or just looking to get a fair amount of wool for whatever reason; look no farther than Thistlefur Village.

Farming the little camps outside Thistlefur Hold, I've been getting a crazy amount of wool -- usually a stack of two dropping from every second or third kill. It took me all of five minutes (I timed it) to get a full stack of 20.
If you're high enough to one-shot the furbolgs and can't get into the Stockades easily (i.e. Horde), I agree that it's a great place to farm some easy wool.

Personally, I think Stockades remains the premier spot for wool farming. 5 runs tonight netted me over 20 stacks, a blue world drop, and plenty of decent low-20s greens to auction.
Getting there as Horde, even in the lower 60s, is much easier with the addition of Stormwind Harbor. Storming the front gate is only recommended for the suicidal or masochistic -- you'll have to contend with no less than 18 guards (several of them elite) and untold numbers of players congregated at the bank, mailbox, and auction house. Instead, sneak in through the harbor. Go to the northeast corner of Westfall and swim (or ride, if you're a DK) north along the cliffs. This takes you into the back of Stormwind in an area with sparsely-placed guards you can easily ride by (most are level 65 non-elite, a couple 75 non-elite as you get closer to the main city) and few to no players. You can get to the instance with only one death. If you can avoid being dazed off your mount (I didn't), you can get there without dying at all.

Read all comments so noone else mention that before,
the best place to farm wool is Scarlet Monastery (run all four wings again and again),
much wool for everyone
why scarlet monastery ?
1) Full of humanoids, all mobs close together
2) No competition, all these mobs are yours and yours only
3) No reason to watch your back for horde/alliance players, no pvp
4) So easily reachable for horde, alliance can also get in rather easy -no need to storm into UC to get in!-
in the 4th wing -cathredal- if you pull boss all mobs in there come to attack you AOE!
60+ humanoids dead, loot...
and guess what, there are a lot more humanoids in scarlet monastery than there is in the small Stockades instance

Any Horde attempting to farm wool cloth at the Alliance Stockades: My advice is that it's not worth it.
10 minutes to get to SWC from Grom Grol and swim to the harbor
25 minutes to get through to the instance (corpse running, the GY is almost 5 mins. away died 5 times)
15 minutes to run the instance
For
4 greens
3 gems
0 blues
and a whopping 39 wool
Also doesn't help that I was level 49 and a rogue.

Any horde still asking if Stockades are worth it for wool, ask yourself this question:
Am I high enough level to stand the guards withgout problems?
If your answer is no, please don't come here saying it's not worth it..You're just the one going into a suicide run.
Any 80 horde can still do Stockades extremely fast and get a nice ammount of wool along the way.

Dark Strand guys
in Ashenvale. I just farmed them for a few minutes (didn't count how many), but ended up with over 60 wool and only about 25 linen. They're low enough level that I can kill them with one Ice Lance, and they start automatically respawning once you kill most of them. They're all out in the open, too, so you can easily see them. They have Imps and Voidwalkers, but at a high level they're barely gnats and you can ignore them. Run back and forth using your instant attacks and watch the Wool roll in.

At one in the morning, I decided i wanted to farm some wool. I came here and found everybody saying stockades was a great place to go. One problem. I'm horde. Now, as this seemed like a pretty unachievable goal, i figured why not do it and get the achievement for the stockades while im at it? I walked through the front gate, right past the duelers (they did try to stop me). I was on my 100% mount. I ran through their trade quarter and straight into the instance. This was extremely easy for me. I'm on a medium pop server. Dont feel so threatened about going there, its not that difficult. Can someone confirm this has been nerfed? I spent an hour there and only got 60 wool and a handful of greens. I'm a 38 Shaman, btw. I admit I could only do single target for the most part, but the drop rate doesn't seem worth it. They still respawn ridiculously fast though.
I don't think it's been nerfed, although this area is really only worth it if you can drop multiple mobs at a time to counteract the low drop rate.
As a 73 Priest I spent 20 minutes killing the
gnolls
and got 67 wool and 48 linen. The spawns were near instant and Shadow Word: Pain made it easy to keep them dying. Looting them took longer than killing them.
At this rate, I would have gotten about 10 stacks (200 wool) in one hour. For Alliance, I still think Stockades is the way to go as long as the instance reset limit doesn't bother you.

If you are running on a new server without a main, and want to solo farm wool cloth for money or level up first aid, the lowest level mobs with a decent drop rate, and that will start respawning after a run thru, are Dagger Hills in Westfall for allies and The Dead Scar between the road and southern castle in Ghostlands for horde. These mobs are lvl 17-20, yet their drop rate is about 30%, as good as a % as mobs in the mid 20s. This allows earlier farming, and the ability for us people who like to play the BGs in the 20-29 bracket the ability to farm them without gaining xp, allowing maximum time in the Bgs above lvl 26 yet getting gold income and/or first aid skill ups. Farm away while waiting in the queue.

Hallo There,
i just decided to level tailoring on my alt and i wanted to go to the suggested gnoll spot in wetlands. This spot does not exist anymore in 4.0.3a (well i didn't find it, probability that its still somewhere in wetlands is not 0 from my point of view ). But i found another nice spot in Hillsbrad . I farmed the gnolls on the field (where the mushrooms grow), and it appears, that they show the same spawning behaviour as the spot mentioned above.
泥嘴豺狼人
Those are the gnolls. It happened that right after killing a gnoll, exactly the same gnoll spawnt before me. The same rule (3 gnolls minimum) seems to apply to the gnolls on the field.
In Approximate 45 (with some breaks since i was eating and preparing for work) min i got ~100 wool, 30 linen and even 5 silk.

For Alliance who don't want to go all the way to SFK and only need a few stacks of wool, you might try Duskwood - very close to Stormwind. There are mobs everywhere that drop wool with a rate of 40-50% each. I found that I could get about 2 stacks in a few minutes from clearing the Vul'Gol Ogre Mound, and another stack or so from the undead that are near Darkshire.

Currently dropping tons of wool (Jan. 2011),
Infected Sludge Guards
(and I believe the peasants too) in the phased quest zone for Horde players in The Sludge Fields (used to be Hillsbrad pre-Cata).
They are on ultra-fast respawn, plus you get 2 NPC helpers during Master Apothecary Lydon's quest line. As soon as you pick up the quest
Protocol
, you have an elite pocket healer (Lydon) and hunter (
Johnny "Jenny" Awesome
) following you around. With their help, you can kill the guards just about as fast as they spawn.
The Guards drop 1-2 wool cloth about every 3 kills. Pretty decent drop rate. I managed to get 3 stacks in under an hour before I got bored.
WARNING: As soon as you turn in the quest
Burnside Must Fall
, the area resets to phase 2, and all the guards are gone.
I wouldn't be surprised if these mobs get fixed to "no drop" at some point, but for now, this is one of the best at-level farming spots I've ever seen.

With a high level character it seems that the best places for cloth are the instances near Undercity.
If you want to level tailoring or indeed first aid, park yourself in Undercity:
Start your stopwatch and make a game of beating your best time, makes doing repeat instances slightly more fun.
Shadowfang Keep for Wool Cloth (some Linen Cloth too, jump down the balcony outside to make exiting faster).
Scarlet Monastery Cathedral for Silk Cloth
Stratholme for Mageweave Cloth
Destroy greys and other stuff you don't want when you run inside and out the instances.
Head to Outlands for Hellfire Ramparts for Runecloth.

Shadowfang keep is definitly the best for wool cloth now. I always get 5stack at each run for a full clear, with some linen (around a stack) and rarely some silk. Just be carefull about the first part, the monster along the way to the first boss got an attack that hit for % of your hp, so you pretty much end dead without noticing.

If you can get into Shadowfang Keep the monsters there drop a lot of linen and wool. A good alternative if you're horde and don't want to fly into Stormwind City.

Confirmed awesomeness of this farming loc - Sentinal Hill. Just go anywhere round the wall around the old Sentinal Tower, there'll be guards fighting the gnolls. Just stand in the middle, aoe them a few times, and loot. There is always at least 2-3 mobs standing there, so as soon as you kill some, more will re-spawn immediately!
For me (lvl 85 mage) in 10-15 mins, I've farmed about 320 linen cloth.... :D

This place still works pretty well.
Inside the hold, a complete clear was netting me 8-12 pieces of wool. I was level 36 and by the time I had completed a loop, the respawns were in place and ready for my next loop. The mobs tend to drop wool in stacks of 2 which is nice. If you need Linen, wool, and a touch of silk, this a decent farming spot.

As of the Cataclysm Expansion and
the addition of the Flight Master's License
, It's ridiculously easy to fly in to the stockades as a hordie by taking the zep to Stranglethorn Vale and simply flying north to Stormwind. I just did it with my 85 to farm some quick wool for my alt. With a 310% percent mount the trip to stocks (from Org) took less than ten minutes.
EDIT: You could also take the portal by the mage trainers to Blasted Lands and fly north from there. That way you don't have to wait for the zeppelin.

I used an 85 hunter and Multi-shot but Area of Effect damage will one-shot these groups as well. As soon as your done relooting one of the other battles has respawned and is fighting, 3-5 loots each time, on occasion 6 loots. Good Luck!

Since cata I average 3 stacks of wool cloth per run (Only human and gnoll area) And I can do it in around 5 minutes on my spriest, the most time consuming part is that when doing big pulls, gnolls tend to slam you, stunning you for 3 seconds. This causes alot of trouble when trying to do channel AoE spells. Stockades is still the best place to farm large amounts of Wool Cloth.

Instant spawn Wool and linen farming. (Horde)
Hillsbrad Foothills - "The Sludge Fields"
Northwest of Southshore ruins and north of Azurelode mine. Along the main road halfway between Silverpine forest and Arathi Highlands.
At the southside of this prison camp is a gauntlet of barriers ina zig-zag formation. Through this gauntlet run level 19 "Risen Hillsbrad Farmers". These farmers (They look like the DE pet) spawn instantly 3-4 at a time in waves.
Here is the beautiful thing. This is meant to be a sort of atmospheric thing. They rush the big bad Sludge guards, the guards dust them they die. Normally a mob like this can not be interacted with. Well, these can. The best part is they are programed to DIE. They lose health. All you have to do is Tap them (IE: AOE is probably best)
You do not even have to really fight them at that point they stop to fight you and slowly die. If you engage them right near their spawn point they may not auto-die.
You can farm up a LOT of linen and wool in a short time. They also drop greens. Basically the loot table is the same as any 19 but you kill 3-4 at a time and you dont even have to work to kill them.
Your main challenge, seriously, will be looting the bodies fast enough. This is like farming light leather in the McClure farm in Elwynn forest.
INSTANT SPAWN
NO RUNNING AROUND
SUPER FAST EASY KILLS

It's no secret, but I love farming this from the Stockades. As a level 69 fire mage, a run only takes me about 10 minutes (I only clear the sides with the humanoids and gnolls... the fire elementals just aren't worth it. Their drops are useless), and I can net anywhere from 3-5 stacks of wool per run. I can have a full bag (16 slots) in under an hour. On top of that, I'll sell the greens on AH or in bulk to enchanters. Then vendor the rest.
I'm lucky, because the wool economy on my server is horrible. Demand is high, but it's just not available on AH, so I'm able to own and control the market. The little bit that is available, however, is horribly overpriced. ie, 100's of gold for a single stack. I've made about 1000g this week just farming gold from the Stockades. Not to mention the 100's I've made from vendor trash and greens.
Gotta love it. I've been playing this game for nearly 2 years and I've yet to find an easier way to make so much gold.

Awesome spot for wool. Thank you! Just a side note..if your farming this at a higher level, its probably easier to stand at the exact spot where the Risen Farmers actually spawn...instead of waiting for them to run down the "gauntlet" to the guards. The exact coordinates of this spot are 37.4, 64.3. I just stood there and flamestriked as they spawned and I couldn't even loot fast enough (and I didn't have to move at all). About 130 wool and 210 linen in 15 minutes.

I tried this and found it to be pretty bad. The nelfs are bowmen, I was DoTing them. Instead of running to me and dropping dead at my feet they stand there and fire arrows at me until they die, I had to run to each to loot them. The treants are a nuisance, they're massive and take ages to despawn after they die. They cover up the dead nelfs making them hard to loot. Worst of all, I got 5 drops of wool cloth in the 5 minutes I was there.

In one run, took about 20 mins for a full clear as a 85 spriest I picked up:
82 Wool cloth
58 Linen Cloth
8 Silk cloth
14 Green
5 Blues
8 Gems
Plus a bunch of vendor trash, my bags were full mind you I have 3 frostweave and one Embersilk bag :D
Not bad considering it only took a short time to run it.
I would suggest this place is your high enough to run it by your self or have a friend run you through it a couple of times!

Just farmed some Wool and Linen and the Morbent Fel Catacombs in Duskwood is dead on. The entrance being at ish.
These are my results after 30minutes of farming, myself being a lvl 81 Blood DK, and my helper a lvl 44 Holy Priest. He is the one that needed the wool for tailoring so he picked up as I killed. Now remember this is only killing the ghouls (Rotted Ones). Insane respawn time.
Wool Cloth x 165
Linen Cloth x 140
Silk Cloth x 35
Bind on Equip Greens and a Blue x 8
Grey Trash x 18 (worth 1g 5s 35c) (6 greys destroyed to make room)
I would have to say with the crazy respawn and the amount in just 30mins the catacombs are by far the best place to farm Wool and Linen the mobs being between 22-24 in lvl most AOEers at lvl 50+ will be able to clear the rooms quickly and loot and by the time they make the loop again respawns will have come back. Remember do not kill Morbent Fel or it will despawn all the ghouls and you will have to wait. Happy farming.

This is right north of Magistrate Burnside, on the road, near the gate leading out.

If you're here because you're leveling Tailoring and Wool Cloth is 10x as expensive as Linen Cloth, a tip for you: You can bypass almost all the Wool Cloth section of Tailoring.
Green Linen Shirt is a great tool to bypass part of the Wool stage. It stays yellow till 112, and you just might even make some gold selling the shirts.
Make this, then a few Simple Kilts, then a few Soft-Soled Linen Boots, and you're three Stylish Red Shirts away from learning Bolt of Silk Cloth.

I have a level 14 tailor/enchanter that needs wool, so I look at AH. EIGHTY GOLD A STACK for wool.
So I went (with my 85 hunter) to Darkshore, to the Raven Hill catacombs, and spent a half-hour farming linen, wool, and silk there. Many 24-25 level mobs that respawn fast, and any decent 50+ AOE deals with them, effortlessly. In my case I used explosive trap. I kept my pet on passive, cos any mobs my pet killed gave no loot.
I farmed up a bunch of linen and wool (10+ stacks of linen, 8 + stacks of wool) and got a few BoE greens, and some silk, too.
I got her enough cloth to level to the silk level in tailoring, and to the heavy wool level in first aid.
GOD HELP ANY NEW PLAYER THAT IS TRYING TO LEVEL TAILORING WITHOUT A HIGHER LEVEL MAIN TO FARM FOR THEM. The AH prices are completely out of control. PPL please don't pay that - don't encourage them.

I think it's a toss up between Stockades (ally) and SFK for everyone else. With SFK you can pull everything to the bridge then kill them, jump off, and you'll be back at the beginning and can reset the instance as opposed to going to the very end of the instance then walking all the way back. Get about 3 stacks of wool + linen cloth and greens for disenchanting. Works well while leveling tailoring/enchanting together. Stocks is also 2.5-3 stacks of wool a run and is much shorter. Good luck.

Well, I can say from recent painful experience that the trolls of northern stranglethorn are *not* a good place to grind wool cloth. I just needed enough to go from 141 to 150 in first aid and it took painfully long to get enough wool to make those heavy wool bandages. All the while, these same mobs dropped substantially more silk cloth and linen cloth than wool.
Having the same mobs of the same level drop more cloth that is both above and below the cloth you are looking for tells you how fouled up the wool cloth droprates are in this game.

9 Greens
5 Blues (im not really sure how i can get one mo
3 Tin Ore (i also loot the chest at the end of the ramparts on my way back, last run i didnt mention it because it didn't drop anything valuable but these sell for 4g each on my server)
A total of 2g57s14c (includes loot, grays and whites
Third and last run since i don't need more Wool Cloth and 1 stack is only 10g on my realm
-11min-
53
毛料
(quite a few less but got more linnen so probably bad luck this run)
37

(somehow i got more every run =p)
2
绿玛瑙
2
暗影石
14 Greens
5 Blues (so probably did make a mistake first run)
Didn't find the chest this time on the same place so probably got a random place
Also got

which, according to my add-on, is around 200g on AH

I found the NPC
very useful to sell the grays and whites so you have room for the next round. This is if you're Horde of course. As I'm an enchanter i could DE all the greens/blues which saves space too

For lower level Horde players who want to farm wool and/or linen cloth, and cannot due to their level, solo the lower level dungeons (SFK, Stockades, etc.), the Sludge Fields in Hillsbrad are still a good area.
The infected sludge workers there drop wool cloth fairly frequently (2 at a time), and also drop linen in 2's and 3's. The respawn rate on these guys is fantastic. I basically just spent time in one field, and once I had cleared one end, the other end had respawned.
After about 30 min (or so, I didn't time), I walked away with 3 stacks of linen, and a little over 3 stacks for wool.
This, in my opinion, is one of the better places for Horde people that can't solo all the aforementioned dungeons.
Good luck!

Wool cloth is VERY easily farmed in stockades and deadmines. I can do a full clear of both in under 10 minutes including looting.
In deadmines, you can skip all the mobs until the pirate ship if you want to, they have the highest drop rate for the cloth and on top of that, you can mount up and pull the whole boat at once.
Not saying that the other mobs don't drop wool though.
In stockades, skip the elemental wing, all they drop for the most part is trash and occasional greens.
Hope this helped.

There is a quest given west of XR for Horde characters called 'Counter attack'. Basically what happens is, when you get the quest, a bunch of Kolkar Centaurs attack the place. There are a bunch of horde defenders that start attacking the centaurs. Just help the defenders and loot the bodies, but make sure not to grab the flag that the quest is after (it's pretty obvious... sticking out of the ground as an object, not on the body). After a little while, the Kolkar will retreat. Then just go back up to the quest giver and ask him where they are and they'll attack again. The drop rate's not that great, but the sheer number of them, and the fact that you have help from the 'horde defenders' (who keep coming back even if they're killed dozens of times) makes up for that. I got 30 linen cloths and 15 wool in about 10 minutes. If you appreciate this comment, feel free to donate wool cloth to Zath on the Llane server. =)

I've found that a decent place to hunt for wool for lowbies is up near the mine in the northeast corner of the Barrens. The level 18-20 Venture Co. employees around there have a decent chance to drop quite a bit of wool for a lower leveled character.
After you advance a little, the best place (period) to farm wool on Horde side is around Thistlefur Hold. I worked up 100 pieces on my level 31 arcane mage in just under 2 hours. Bring food that can keep you well fed, though.

After farming both furbolgs in Ashenvale and Boulderslide Ravine, I have to say Boulderslide wins.
Although I was able to get comparable amounts of wool off both types, the Boulderslide mobs are packed into one cave, while the furbolgs reside in separate camps, meaning you have to travel from camp to camp. It's faster to kill the guys in Boulderslide, plus they happened to drop more greens for me than the furbolgs did.
Also, the furbolgs drop Ashenvale pages, which take up a lot of bag space.

Hey all, while trying to get my alt's tailoring up, I went on a quest for Wool Cloth thanks to the information provided on here, mind you i was confused by it, so I tried it for myself. The results?
Note: This was done on the Horde side, don't think it matters really on the side.
In Hillsbrad Foothills I went farming in 2 of the known places,
Durnhold Keep (77,40)
Here I spend an hour farming with my level 60 Paladin. In that time here's what i got:
4x Green Items
5x Stacks of Wool Cloth
4x Stacks of Linen Cloth
Hillsbrad Fields (32,40, Here I mainly focused on the dense areas of mobs, like the fields and buildings)
Again I spend an hour here to keep the ratio equal to the other farming spot:
4x Green Items
5x Stacks of Wool Cloth
4x Stacks of Linen Cloth
So basically, I think it just comes down to the zone you're in. As via my two farming exercises I basically got the same drop rate in the same amount of time, give or take 2-5 cloths.
Hope this helps, I'll post another update as I farm the other two supposed hotspots, Deadmines, and The Azureload Mines.
Cheers!

If you don't have a high-level friend I would recommend Bael'dun Excavation Site in Southern Barrens. Drops almost every time!

I, for one, prefer to buy the wool on AH to get my first aid and Tailoring up. Sadly for some reason most of the people that put wool on AH neglect to put a "Buy Out" price on their auctions which blows chunks big time. I'm not a patient person. I'm not going to put in a bid and wait a couple days and hope I get it. If I'm going to buy from the AH I want my purchase right then and there. I often wonder if these people have any idea how many sales they're missing out on by not putting a "Buy Out" price on their auctions. :(

Wool cloth goes for about 10g per stack on my server. :|
For lowbies, around the Bael'dun excavation site is good enough. For people high enough, Deadmines can provide up to 6 stacks per run. I prefer to go with jawsjawsjaws method further up the page,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMCTSHzblbc
.
Wetlands location is 64, 62. Mobs are around level 22-26 non-elite. If you don't have coords addon, it's here at
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/map-coords.aspx
.
I got about 4 stacks of wool cloth in 20 minutes using that method. Good if you can cast AOE spells.
To go to Wetlands as Horde, go to Theramore Isle in Dustwallow Marsh, east of The Barrens. Take the middle boat. Go out of Auberdine once you get there. There should be a Spirit Healer visible once you are far enough along the path. Resurrect, go to 64, 62 and go nuts.

Looks like the drop rate for wool in Thousand Needles for the centaurs is no longer correct. I killed about 20, and got only 1 peice of wool. It appears the drop rate at the stockade is fairly accurate.

I haven't seen anyone mention Windshear Mine (SE part of Stonetalon Mts) yet. I just spent an hour and 15 minutes farming wool with a level 33 hunter and ended up with over 120 wool, ~100 linen, and 8 green items (including what I nabbed from chests). The mine is set up so that you can just go in a big circle from entrance to exit and back to the entrance, and by the time you get back to the entrance the mobs have respawned, so you just keep going. I made 4 or 5 circuits before stopping. The mobs are also pretty dense, so it doesn't take a lot effort.

Stocks win in wool drop rate. If you have the patience to go out to there even as a horde. I've farmed there on my ally before and recently went on my horde. And unlike the deadmines you don't have to worry about the loads upon loads of greens to fill your bags up. You can run that place with 2 or 3 pulls if you want and just dump the greys or sell them if you are ally. I ran deadmines twice took about an hour on my horde, did 6 runs in stocks on my horde and got 273 compared to 140 wool cloth that mines gave me.

I've been trying to level my tailoring on an alt and used my 68 boomkin to farm some wool since the AH on my server (Dragonbligh) is so overpriced it makes me sick (about 9 gold a stack). Anyway, I tried a lot of the locations here, the Furblog camps in Ashenvale do have a good drop rate but it's a pain because they don't mob very well, they're kinda spread out and take too much time. I found the best place was the Stockade since it's very small (took about 15 minutes) and I got 3 stacks of wool, a stack of silk, a few linens and about 7 greens. Not a bad fifteen minute farm session. Especially when you can get a huge group by aggro'ing everything in site and then AoE them for about 3 seconds =)

I've just been killing dwarves in Bael Modan and in 20 minutes I've gathered 69 wool, 8 silk, 64 linen, a 10-slot bag, a minor strength to bracers enchanting formula and various low level engineering parts from the boxes including a crude scope!
Putting it simply, wool cloth is generally dropped by mobs between levels 21 and 28. The more of those level mobs in an area, the more wool cloth you'll likely gather. Any instances with mobs around those levels are a good bet, naturally, as you'll have no competition from gankers/other farmers/questers etc and if you're using a high level character it's a breeze, of course. (Stockades, Blackfathom Deeps and The Deadmines)
Personally, I've run Stockades many times and it's definitely up there with the best. Not worth it for Horde, though, really.

I went to Durnhold Keep as advised with my level 50 Demo specced Warlock, here's what I got:
Durnhold Keep (77,40)
I spent 1h here, what I did was have my Felguard out and run around the open, crowded areas casting Curse of Agony on everything in sight. After everything was DoTted I started looting what my Felguard already killed while he keeps on killing the rest of them following me. I didn't enter houses or go to non crowded places, since you lose time traveling and the respawn is fast enough for you to run a circuit around the crowded places. I had to sit to drink and eat maybe 3 or 4 times.
3x Green Items(which disenchanted into 6x Soul Dust and 2x Lesser Astral Essence)
7,5x Stacks of Wool Cloth
4,5x Stacks of Linen Cloth
7 Healing Potions
1g 30s worth of npc'd junk
Here, I tried making a map of the circuit I used(took me about 2 or 3 runs to figure it out, if you have a pet do not forget to mount before jumping down the cliff since the pet WON'T jump after you and will take the longer path, but it'll appear by your side whenever you unmount):

EDIT: Wow, my stuff just sold on the auction house, I was selling stacks for 12g ea, I made 200g from 2h of farming! This is awesome!

The best place I have found for farming is at Mosshide Fen in The Southern Wetlands (approx co-ords 62,66), there are 4 camps of Mosshide Mongrels and Gnolls, just kill the mobs at one camp and go to another, by the time you complete the circle they've respwaned and ready to go, got 15 pieces in one go around of all 4 camps

In the list above of locations to farm wool cloth, I noticed there is a location called "Gnomeregan - Heroic Mode". What exactly is Heroic Mode?

Depending on your level, you can farm the Deadmines for wool. All of the mobs there drop wool or linen. You can always sell the linen for money to buy more wool. This is what I did. I recommend being quite high in lvl for this, to make it quick and worth your time if you are soloing. Also the green drops are plentiful. Always a bonus.

On my realm atm a stack of Wool Cloth is fetching 5-6g minimum! i dont really know why?... lots of low-lvl tailors? but anyways the Tailoring Supplier in Silvermoon sells limited pieces of Wool for 1s 15c each(?) sometimes she will sell u 10 pieces which i then take to the AH and sell for 2g 50s... nice profit there 2g 40s for doing nothing :P all adds up :D

i dont know about you guys, but on the two realms that i play on, a stack of wool goes for 20g or more. the market hasnt always been this high though, when i was in my 20ish levels it was only about 10g per stack, but that still is a lot more than any post ive read here.

I was farming for wool one day... (not the thing most people do, but I'm extremely optimistic about my tradeskills so I do it anyway.), and I was farming the Rot Hides of Fenris Isle (Silverpine Forest). They're supposed to drop it about 20% of the time, but I killed about 20 and only got 2... Am I just really unlucky?
EDIT: I meant to put periods in the subject. And I wish you could order these by drop rate. Maybe I'll mention that in the improvement thread thing.

Yeah my advice is to get to at least level 22 and head to Hillsbrad and farm the farmers and Peons, it should grany adequate experiance and you get a really good drop rate. Looking for mount money? they sell for about 1-3g in AH.

Sells for about 1 gold per stack of 20. Nice $$$ maker.

Farm Durnholde Keep in Hillsbrad (Sydicate Shadowmages, Rogues, and Watchmen) when the mobs there are green. They're really easy to kill and you get TONS of wool.
Mobs there are around lvl 22, so it's a good place to get wool when you're still a low level.

For horde characters I recommend Thistlefur Hold in Ashenvale north of Astranaar. Dense and fast spawns and they drop linen, wool and some silk. Using simple AoE tactics I got 100+ wool in 40 minutes. As far as I know it's the best place to farm wool for horde.
For alliance The mosshide in Lower Wetlands are another great source for wool if you don't want to do an instance. It may have been fixed since TBC came out, but I remember a few sections was constant respawns of them, even if you did a single aoe kill of the whole part, 2 would just respawn as fast as you killed them. It's also not too far from the graveyard if you're a lowbie.

While it is true that you might get a piece of wool cloth when you skin a sheep. It is also true that you might get ruined leather scraps. Couple this with the fact that sheep are not heavily populated in any one spot and you've got a recipe for frustration. People just post things like that to try to stir up other people.
Farm humanoids. Hillsbrad. Wetlands. etc.

Corroborating other comments: Bael Modan is great for farming Wool as Horde. Just take loops through it with occasional trips outside and you should get plenty. There is a small chance for silk here. If you're lower level, the Quilboars north of Taurajo will drop mixed linen/wool in their late teens, and the Quilboar north of RFK will drop wool if you're too low for Bael Modan. The Barrens is a Horde zone, so there is no concern for ganking.
Hillsbrad, starting with the Syndicate in Durnholde are alright for a mix of Linen and Wool, moving onto the Hillsbrad Fields npcs for a slightly higher wool chance. Hillsbrad is infamous for its ganking though, and mages like to aoe farm in Fields. I would just pick up wool if you're doing the other quests in this area, but avoid it otherwise.
If you're a Warlock+Tailor, a potential farm area is the Defias Enchanters in Duskwood. They have a mixed chance of wool and silk, but also a small chance to drop the recipe for Robes of Arcana for your Robe quest.
Best of luck with Wool :)
