The vulpera are a new fox-like race in Battle for Azeroth and a potential new allied race to be unlocked sometime after launch. They're native to Zandalar, living in a desert wasteland known as
沃顿
. For years, the Zandalari have been sending their criminals to these wastes, to perish in the heat; Vol’dun is seen by the Zandalari as being too harsh for even them to survive in. The vulpera, while thriving in this environment, however, are not without their own troubles. The sethrak have long enslaved the vulpera, selling them as servants and slaves. Living in such an environment turned them into mischievous scavengers, stealing food and valuables from their masters to aid their families and ensure their survival.
This guide contains all currently known information on the vulpera, along with some educated guesswork at their potential future as an allied race, based on information from the Beta.
History and Lore
"My caravan has called these sands home for much longer than I've lived."
"The sethrak have oppressed vulpera like me for countless generations."
Vulpera, as we know them, are native to Zandalar, living in the desert wasteland of
沃顿
. They are tenacious scavengers, looking for value in anything they can find. The Faithless Sethrak have long enslaved the vulpera, using them for physical labor. For more information on the vulpera questline in Vol'dun, check out our article on the
Vol'dun questing with the Sethrak and the Vulpera
.
"The dunes are filled with treasures just waiting to be found."
"We can't afford to waste resources out here."
In general, the vulpera are feisty and resourceful, going as far as 'turning a skull into a boat' and 'turning a sethrak into a tent flap'. In some cases, they are as opportunistic as goblins, turning anything and everything into something of value, and being willing to swipe anything that's not nailed down for the sake of survival. Unlike the goblins, however, they place a priority on survival rather than let themselves be consumed by greed.
"Home is where the wagon is."
In Vol'dun, you will find the vulpera to be fairly nomadic, travelling across the zone in caravans rather than opting to build a village or town. They're seen making use of caves and outcroppings as temporary resting grounds for themselves and their caravans. They use trained buzzards for the delivery of mail, and as the mount for the flight masters. They use the local alpacas to help drive their caravans, including
米尔拉
's two,
朵利
and
朵特
.
"There are others across the sea, though I have never seen them myself."
Vol'dun is not the only place to find vulpera. The vulpera make up a portion of the pirate group known as the Bilge Rats. They have made their way across the ocean to Kul Tiras, where they raid local settlements. The Bilge Rats have drawn the ire of the local humans, leading them to send the player to assault the Bilge Rats in
自由镇
, a 5 man instance. The second boss encounter has the player square off against the pirate faction's leaders, including the leader of the Bilge Rats,
尤朵拉船长
.
It's uncertain if there is another large encampment of vulpera elsewhere in the world, but it's likely that we will see more of the vulpera in the future.
Vulpera's Model
The Origins
During the reveal announcement at Blizzcon 2017, and when the Alpha for BfA was first launched, the only vulpera that we were shown were an altered copy of the goblin model. These models lacked tails beyond a basic stub, and left an initial impression of something other than the foxes they were supposed to be based on. Shortly after the launch of the Alpha, however, a new model was added into the game files. This model was a drastic upgrade in quality, and in addition to still being able to wear player gear, they were finally given a fox's tail.
Wireframe model comparison between the current goblins, the original vulpera, and the newer vulpera.
Skeletal comparison between the current goblins and the newer vulpera.
One thing that's interesting to note is how the model, especially its animations have evolved from its original form as a goblin reskin. In taking an in-depth look at the various animations side by side, even the animations that retain the same general motions of the goblins have been made substantially more expressive and have been tweaked to fit the vulpera. Below, we look at Walk and Run, as well as both main casting animations. The first three utilize the same general animation, while CastDirected has been updated to use a different animation. The last tab shows the StealthRun animation where it still utilizes the original Goblin animation with the model, allowing us to see how an animation looks when the tail and face are left unanimated.
The Animations
Aside from the changes to the model over the course of the beta, many new animations keep appearing within their model files. One common trait among these newer animations is a high level of quality, particularly in the facial expressions. While many of their animations come from the goblins, every one of those animations has been retouched for facial animation as well as a large amount of effort put into the animations of their tails. Looking beyond the level of polish and expression, we are also presented with several animations that go above and beyond the animations needed for an NPC race, such as an animation for /train, as well as a SwimBackwards animation. It should be noted that these animations include fully articulated faces and tails, denoting an intentional inclusion rather than an inherited one.
One key difference between other races and the way the vulpera are being created is the fact that the males and females use essentially the same animations. While they may eventually add animations that differ substantially between the males and the females of the race, currently there are no animations that do so.
During various times in the beta, the vulpera model has been updated to add new animations. Early on, we were given EmoteTrain and SleepUp, but more recent additions include JumpStart(2), which is a secondary jumping animation, and EmoteWork. Later builds also gave us another key animation that we will describe in more detail a little further below. Interestingly, at the current moment, JumpStart(2) for female vulpera has not been added.
The Player Cape
A secondary thing to note about the vulpera's animations is how they are all properly animated to use the player cape geoset. Yet, there's not a single vulpera in the game that utilizes a cape. There's a moderate amount of effort that has gone into setting it for these animations. Below are a few examples showing the cape in motion.
The Heart of Azeroth
One animation in particular that may be the strongest evidence the vulpera are intended to be playable is what's known as
"ArtOffLoop"
. This animation is part of the
艾泽拉斯之心
system and is used at various times in the story and questing. To our best knowledge, it is only needed for playable races. It was added to the Vulpera alongside most, but not all, playable races. A later patch brought the animation to all other playable races, as well as, for some unknown reason, the sethrak.
This animation, at one time during the beta, was seen during the Chamber of the Heart quest given by Magni. Now, however, the animation used during this quest appears to be a mixed animation that uses ChannelCastDirected and ArtOffLoop. Races that do not have ArtOffLoop are shown to hold the Heart of Azeroth incorrectly, while races that do have it, along with the vulpera and sethrak, function correctly.
Video obtained through some in-game illusion trickery.
The Customization
The vulpera have a significant number of customization options already coded into their models, more than the Kul Tiran at the time of this writing. The fact that this would be done for a simple NPC race is unrealistic, contributing to the view that they are intended to be a playable race. The available options may be reworked or removed before they are added as a playable race, as currently the 'tattoo' options are implemented in a hardcoded manner and appear incomplete, as well as the male's 'snout' choices 6 and 7 being identical. Interestingly to note, aside from being the first race without drastic silhouette differences between males and females, the vulpera would also be the first playable race without a hair option.
Current available customization options
Fur Color (Skin)
Face
Ears
Snout
Fur Markings (Tattoos)
You can preview all of the customization options using the
Dressing Room
feature, and below are some examples of the customization options for vulpera.
Interestingly enough, while it cannot be seen normally, both the males and females have the same sort of stripe pattern across their chests. Vulpera also do not seem to be big on brushing their teeth. ;)
Fan requests for additional customization options include the ability to customize the eyes, a few more choices with Fur Color such as arctic with-black or
沃平
red, as well as the addition of a black-tipped tail option within the Fur Markings category. There are also a few bugs such as a repeated muzzle for males, male face 2 + fur color 3 being missing / duplicated from another face, and a few color-related issues with some of the 'tattoos'.
The Relics
At the time of writing, the older vulpera model has not been entirely phased out. The main low-quality model was removed, but a similar model is still used by
尤朵拉船长
. However, Eudora's voice files have not been hooked to her current model, indicating a model update for the pirate captain may be arriving soon. Additionally, the vulpera children are also lacking both proper tails as well as sound files. It's unclear at this time whether either of these models will see updates before launch.
Potential for Horde Faction
The Quests
One of the main reasons the vulpera are likely to join the Horde is the extensive and successful interactions with the player on behalf of the Horde's expedition efforts in Vol'dun. Below are some key moments in the questline that have you interacting closely with the vulpera.
深入沙丘
: You are ambushed by Sethrak spellcasters while traveling to Vol'dun. With the help of the vulpera (
尼莎
), you are rescued from imprisonment following the ambush.
惊艳离场
: After assisting Nisha in helping her gear up for war, you follow her to the Vulpera Hideaway, a camp of escaped vulpera slaves. There, she introduces you to their leader,
基罗
.
凝神香油
: With your assistance,
米尔拉
cures
剑卫卡佳
, an important member of the Zandalari.
戎卫的足迹
,
时刻行动
,
昔日奥秘
: After assisting the vulpera and Kaja, you and Kaja are escorted by
米尔拉
on a journey to find
戎卫莱克拉
. This takes you across the zone, to the Temple of Akunda, and later to Zul'Ahjin where you meet up again with Kiro and Nisha.
有效的抗毒药剂
: You again assist Kiro in concocting a cure, this time for a Devoted sethrak named
塞利克
. You then are tasked with locating Sulthis' Keystone within the ruins. You are then tasked with taking it to
沃里克
at the Temple of the Devoted.
混乱中的盟友
: Vorrik then informs you and your allies of the threat of Mythrax, and you take part in an assault on the Faithless sethrak. Along with the help of the vulpera, you free vulpera children and slaves, and wreak havoc in the Faithless city.
柯泰克大帝的陨落
: The assault leads to the final confrontation with the leader of the Faithless,
柯泰克大帝
, who is defeated with the assistance of Vorrik and Nisha.
Throughout the zone, you interact with all of the various races of Vol'dun, but it's the vulpera that truly step up and support the Horde during your time there. Conversely, the Alliance experience has them interacting with the Faithless and Devoted sethrak, but not with any vulpera.
The Database
In an early Alpha build, around the time the vulpera player models were introduced, they were also added into the ChrRaces.db2 database. First off, everyone should understand that this database is now encrypted, so we can no longer divine anything from it. Secondly, please note that the explanations in this section aim to be as unbiased as possible. That said, let's take a look at two versions of the database. The first image is when they were first added, with the second image being one of the last available versions of ChrRaces.db2 before its encryption.
Initial Database
Last Known Database
Within each image, we compare goblins and vulpera, trolls and Zandalari, tauren and Highmountain. Let's discuss what actually is different in the first database. First, let me state that at this stage, vulpera is almost entirely copied from goblins straight-up. CreateScreenFile is the same for all races, and involves the Horde select screen. SelectScreenFile is different for the Allied Races, and the vulpera one, along with the Zandalari, were changed to be identical to their CreateScreenFile value. Aside from this, vulpera's only differences are Flags, Male/FemaleDisplayID, CharComponent (#1), and names. For the most part, the other Allied Races are fairly similar, even the released Highmountain, though some obvious things are set for them like HeritageArmor, RaceRelated, and StartingLevel.
What this means is that... Blizzard copied goblins to account for the new player-form models and barely changed anything. So, in-and-of itself, this isn't news. This is just how things work. The only strange thing in this first version is the fact that they matched the SelectScreenFile to what they dummied in for the Zandalari.
Moving to the second database, many of the values were stripped away for both the vulpera and the Zandalari as wild rumors were thrown around of "What's the next Allied Race!?!?"... However, the same treatment was applied to the Zandalari. Alliance was changed to 2 (Neutral), BaseLanguage was changed, many values were zeroed. (Oddly, skeleton/corpse bones wasn't zeroed for either) In any case, the main thing we can learn from this is that Blizzard reacted strongly to what could be considered a potential spoiler, and even though Zandalari were pretty much confirmed at the time, they stripped out the extra data for both races.
In the end, it leaves us with very little, but it does further emphasize the goblin origins, and holds a slight emphasis on Horde through the initial setting of the SelectScreenFile variable. Overall, though, it's not the smoking gun that many people claim it to be. It's just part of the development process.
The Interviews
On the other end of the spectrum of 'things that point towards Horde', we have the Allied Race Q&A questions. Tobias Amaranth has written an in-depth examination of the more recent interviews, and why it is that vulpera and sethrak have a strong chance to be the next pairing of Allied Races. That article can be found here:
https://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20764968236
As a short-form summary, Blizzard has indicated that the general timeline for Zandalari and Kul Tirans is 8.1, that Allied Races are likely to come in pairs and in every major patch during the course of Battle for Azeroth, that Allied Races for BfA are already planned out for the most part, and that
"in other cases, we had to think about what an interesting race would be to inhabit that area, and in some cases we had to think about inventing a new race to suit it."
In other words, that some of the planned Allied Races are brand new races. Given the state of the Tortollan and the deconfirmation of Blood trolls, the most likely races to fit that bill are the vulpera and the sethrak.
As for specifically why the vulpera will be going Horde, well... This question kind of says it all:
"If we noticed a preponderance of really big, tough-looking races on one side or really charming, cool, cute-looking races on the other, then we try to do a little bit of a rebalance. Those profiles and those aesthetics are really important. We didn't want everyone on the Horde to look ugly, right?"
Allied Race Footnotes
Racial Mount
There are currently three mounts associated with the vulpera race and their culture.
For their ground mount, their guards ride on hyenas. Exalted reputation with the vulpera allows you to purchase
灰白土狼的缰绳
. This is one of four known variations of the new
hyena mount
. Another version of the mount,
捕获的沙丘食腐狼
, drops randomly within the Vol'dun zone. The mounts labeled Black and White (brown?) are still marked as placeholders.
For their flying mount, they utilize trained vultures for their flight paths (and mail). None of these models are available through in-game items. They have decoration similar to the manner that the vulpera decorate their caravans. Wowhead documents the models in
one of their articles
. They have a large number of recolors, totaling ten!
Lastly, we have the
alpaca
. While not a mount, these creatures are used by the vulpera in place of horses to drive their caravans. There is currently no mount model associated with the alpaca, but there are 5 color variations of the model. Dot and Dolly were given harnesses towards the end of the beta.
Potential Classes
While speculative, a short list of likely classes can be made examining existing NPCs. Vulpera NPCs have demonstrated skill as Warriors, Rogues, and Hunters. In addition, datamining has revealed broadcast text suggesting an elemental named
淹水的桑博尔
may be training some vulpera in shamanism. This is not currently seen in game, and may be part of a future questline pertaining to their introduction as an Allied Race. Other classes may be possible but are not currently represented by vulpera NPCs.
Likely Potential Classes
猎人
潜行者
萨满祭司
战士
Heritage Armor
The armor shown worn by the vulpera is very consistent throughout the zone. In only a few instances are the vulpera wearing something other than their desert clothing. One such NPC is
杰诺
to whom you bring his lost flute, but even the pirate NPCs use the desert clothing outfit. In spite of their ability to wear player armor; and having been fit for most items other than shoulders, helmets, and complex belts; the vulpera do not currently take much advantage of this.
You can check
Kiro's model
and
Nisha's model
in the model viewer to see examples of the male and female creature armor.
In Progress.
Audio
The english vulpera voices range from average to high pitched, with a mostly American accent.
We also get treated to some really beautiful melodic tunes when inside a vulpera campsite. It also comes with a flute solo, further emphasizing their folksy culture. One fan suggestion is that their /dance should be them pulling out a random instrument rather than the traditional mixed-loop /dances of other races.

Oh man, please let it happen and please let them be Paladins >.< I don't want to be a Tauren and its going to be soul crushing if this awesome race becomes a thing and I can't play my favorite class on them.

These guys need to join the horde to offset the scary image kinda like how kul'tirans and dark irons are off setting the alliance priss and pretty image. oh and before you say worgen have already done that for the alliance do the males /dance.
Their fight against slavery and oppression from the seth'rak also compliments the struggles many horde races have faced.
Plus their is a high chance they will have alpaca's as their racial mount!
after playing vol'dun I heavily stand by this, they act like orcs, fight with bombs that could make a goblin blush, dress like trolls, and are total bad asses.
and if you think they don't fit in to the more brutal aspects horde are known for check out these ones.
And in 8.1 the alliance go all classic WoW on them and do some really horrible things to them so this further cements they'll be joining the horde.

Yes! Make them playable..! :D
SO I MAY SLAUGHTER EVERY SINGLE OF THESE WRETCHES IN WAR MODE! For the sethrak, huehue.

I think they can be a monk as well.
Because nearly every playable race can be a monk.

I'm really hoping for the Vulpera to join the Horde! I do wish that they get a different stealth animation, though. They're sly and clever little foxes and the current stealth animation isn't particularly stealthy in my opinion. In addition to warrior, hunter, rogue, and shaman, I can definitely see them fulfilling more caster roles such as mage and priest. Either way, I have high hopes for these fellas!

The very second I got into Voldun and saw Nisha, I literally screamed into the general chat that I want them as a race and that I will make one immediately upon release. Finding this page, now I know it WILL HAPPEN! HELL YEAH! Can't wait to play one!

Aww so cute... goblin mechanics with a new fox skin :/ How about create something new and not just change colors/pixels, is it me or does Blizzard like the copy/paste legendary key?

Judging from how they speak and act, wouldn't they better fit becoming an Alliance race?
This article shows that they're effectively furry goblins, and it'd be redundant for the Horde to have a second mercantile, self-reliant race — whereas the Alliance doesn't really have a goblin parallel (gnomes are tinkerers yes, but their attitudes are completely different).
This would open up the sethrak as the Horde counterpart, with more "wilder/feral" races typically finding a home on the red side.

Honestly...this is going to be an epic looking race, I main a shaman orc,and always thought the orcs are a bit to big for the mounts, was hoping Blizz would scale it but never happened, so I really liked the goblin/mount ratio, because your flying on a dragon, you should look small etc. But goblins just don't look the part imo, but now hopefully with this race we can have good looking small characters, just hoping they can be shamans(I doubt)...just think, totems can be some bone/fur tail looking thing. My point is I hope they make them a playable race!

I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but I don't like how they feel in the context of WoW and its races. It's not like they're all that different, certainly not in quality, from the other available races (playable and non), but it teeters just over that edge of... I don't know what to call it, "cute-sy animal game"?
It's not going to end my world if they ever do become playable and I might even try them myself, but I don't know, something about it doesn't feel like it fits. Even Pandaren fit in the world better, though to be fair lots of people were not happy with them being introduced. I didn't mind, I was just sad they were a little
too
Panda-like (and by that I mean fat bears; as opposed to maybe something muscular).
The design quality is there and they'd make a good sub/allied race. I'm just not too excited by the prospect of a bunch of cute anthro animal people flooding the game's world. I guess I won't really notice with the helmets the game has, though. Barely anyone walks around without one covering their face.

Every single expansion there are beastlike races that usually end up being faction-specific.
1. Classic you had Furbolg (typically associated with Alliance) and Centaurs (typically associated with Horde)
2. Burning Crusade had Broken (typically associated with Alliance), Sporeggar, Ogres (typically associated with Horde), and 2 Dragonflights as well
3. Wrath had Tuskarr (neutral), and the Wolvar and Murlocs (hostile to each other, and each sharing characteristics of the Alliance and Horde)
4. Cataclysm was different in that it had four factions that were used in different ways. Dragonmaw vs Wildhammer to represent the factions, and two neutral groups, Ramkahen and the Guardians of Hyjal, the Tol'vir being one creature made from the parts of many, and the Guardians either being natural beings or having a unified form that they can change into another (Druids)
5. Mists had Jinyu (Alliance), Hozen (Horde), and Klaxxi (neutral)
6. Draenor had the Arrakoa and the Awakened
7. Legion had such a huge scope as far as the story they wanted to tell and how, there weren't really, unless you want to count Talon's Vengeance and Highmountain. The story dictated all those factions have history with the playable races.
8. BFA - We currently have one, the neutral Tortollan.
No way we are getting two out of the blue races with no history when we still haven't even gotten all of the current Allied Races, or heritage armor. Priscilla Ashvane also has a Heart of Azeroth, and we know she has been consorting with pirates. We also have seen more than a few Vulpera pirates down in Freehold.

DON'T FEED THE FURRIES
But seriously, the mildly-skimpy armor and torso muscle-definition despite them having a coat of fur is making it crystal clear who's being pandered to and by what means. It's really creepy and I already unfortunately know all too well the types of people who are going to rage over not getting bedroom-eyed foxes for their faction as well as downvote this comment. Not even the main lewd boards on 4chan tolerate this brand of degeneracy, and anyone who's been there knows that that means a LOT.

I had a sneaking hunch these might be playable when I noticed they were nearly identical in design with the Goblins - As a 3D animation designer myself, I couldn't help but get excited to know they might be playable lol.
That said, I've already reserved the name for mine ... "Star Fox" because I am a nerd after all >.<
I will admit though, as a avid snake lover, I am a bit jealous the Alli (possibly) getting the Sethrak race ... I'm still not over them getting Void Elves, and the major differences in Blood Elves vs Void Elves in body design, they should almost be identical, but upon closer inspection, they've shrunk Void Elves a bit and made them more slender ... Like wait a minute, they are literally the same race, just Void Touched >.>
Then again, I am jealous lol :p

Vulpera have been officially confirmed as-of 10/07/2019.
Congrats to the Vulpera Hype Caravan and the effort of
everyone
involved in being positive and hopeful throughout the last year-of-so. Many of us saw this coming, many people were filled with dread, but at this point we are now here!
Hopefully in the near future Blizzard will do an interview or two and we can learn what effect, if any, the VHC and public praise had. And here's hoping for Sethrak. They still have a chance. I stand by that.
