Advanced Concepts
This section is for the readers who already have a good understanding of the mechanics of the Unholy Death Knight. You can execute your rotation with ease and are now looking for the nuances that aren't obvious at first. I'll be covering topics that allow you to min-max your dps, as well as interesting mechanics and niche gamestyles.
Mythic + Burst
This section gives an in-depth explanation of how to use abilities when dealing with Trash in Mythic +. The only ability you need to save for bosses is your

ability. Other than that, just make sure to not use your Cooldowns on the pack just before a boss!

How we tackle the trash packs in a Mythic + depends heavily on your talent choices, as well as the length of the specific pack. We'll start the discussion by looking at the "Wound Build". This assumes that you've picked

and
爆裂之疡
. The goal in this situation will be to pop as many

s as possible, dealing heavy AoE damage with the splash component.
The most efficient active way of generating and popping wounds is by using
脓疮打击
on every single mob, and then popping them all at the same time with
天灾打击
while standing in your
枯萎凋零
. We also generate wounds without having to spend any GCDs through the
感染之爪
talent. If we had an infinite amount of time, we'd just spend all of using two
脓疮打击
s on each mob before popping them all in an insane explosion. However, trash packs have a finite lifetime! If we were to use
脓疮打击
on every single mob in a 10-target pull, we'd only get to the fourth mob before everything was dead. The conundrum is, therefore: how long do we spend pre-applying wounds before moving on to popping them?
This depends heavily on pack size, and pack length. We essentially want to time our abilities so that the trash pack dies at the end of our
枯萎凋零
window. We will then have spent just the right amount of time generating and popping wounds! For a pack of two mobs, we have ample time to use
脓疮打击
twice on each mob, before popping down
枯萎凋零
and going ham. For a pack of three, we might have time for 3
脓疮打击
s in total. For a pack of 5 mobs, 2 might be all the time we have. For a pack of 10 mobs, we'd just want to use our
黑暗突变
before initiating the AoE! The larger the pack, the quicker it dies. This all also depends on the level of your key, the dps of your teammates, and whether or not it's

week. You just have to gauge the timing for each dungeon you run!
If you do this properly, you'll be able to deal insane damage even on smaller pulls. Considering the number of wounds you'll be popping and strength you'll be gaining, both your
爆裂之疡
and
传染
will melt the trash packs! I personally love running this build!
The
枯萎凋零
window
Now that you know how to setup your wounds if necessary, it's time to discuss how exactly we handle our
枯萎凋零
window. Essentially our AoE rotation is mostly limited by resources. We need to wait for runes to recharge to apply our wounds and we need to generate Runic Power to AoE with
传染
. However, during our
枯萎凋零
, we are here limited by time! It only lasts for 10 seconds and it's crucial that we make the best of it! In reality, this means having a well-planned and proper setup before using your
枯萎凋零
, making sure you use any GCD-locked abilities
before
popping it down!
When you pull a trash pack, you want to start by casting
爆发
. This applies
恶性瘟疫
to all targets which in the end gives you among the highest damage contributions on the pack. Next on the list is using all your Cooldowns if you have them. This includes casting
黑暗突变
and
邪恶突袭
. It's important that you use these GCD-locked abilities before
枯萎凋零
so that you don't waste GCDs inside the
枯萎凋零
window! We also apply wounds with
脓疮打击
on multiple targets as discussed above. Once you're finished using up all these not-so-exciting stuff, it's time to pop down
枯萎凋零
and go ham!
Now that your
枯萎凋零
is down, you're going to start spamming out
天灾打击
/
暗影之爪
. There are two things to keep in mind when doing this. Firstly, don't cap Runic Power. Even though you want to use
天灾打击
/
暗影之爪
as much as possible during
枯萎凋零
, losing out on Runic Power is actually worse! This is due to how much damage
传染
does, as well as having a finite amount of resources. You will run out of Runes in the
枯萎凋零
window if you only spam
天灾打击
/
暗影之爪
. Using
传染
allows you to trigger
符文腐蚀
, regenerating your Runes and allowing you to pump out more
天灾打击
/
暗影之爪
! Since
符文腐蚀
takes a couple of second to regenerate the Runes, it's not worth doing this at the end of the
枯萎凋零
window (2-3 seconds before it's over).

At first glance, this defensive cooldown seems simple and straightforward. However, it has a long history of interesting usages, and a large amount of unexpected behaviours. Let's dive deep into this defensive and see exactly how it works. To start if all off, let's look at the Runic Power generating aspect of the Cooldown.
反魔法护罩
absorbs 30% (multiplied by you vers %) of your max HP in magic damage and converts a portion of this damage into Runic Power. The Runic Power gained is proportional to the % of maximum hp of the shield that has been absorbed. For every 1% of maximum health in shield depletion, you'll generate 0.833 Runic Power. Any Azerite trait, talent and versatility will increase the size of the shield, and therefore also the maximum Runic Power generated (this does not include
噬法者
which is currently bugged, not generating the extra Runic Power that it should).
For instance, a fully absorbed shield at 10% vers would result in
30 * 1.1 * 0.833 = 27.5 Runic Power
Several expansions ago, this ability was the king of cheese. The most prevalent example of this is probably during Warlords of Draenor. DKs would drink

next to a camp fire in order to catch on fire before the pull. You'd then use

, soaking the fire damage and generating Runic Power. (You could even do this in combat with a specific pet) This allowed DKs to start the fight with nearly full Runic Power (you could generate 80+ RP from a single use of
反魔法护罩
)! You could also run into all kinds of fire on the ground, generating lots and lots of Runic Power.
In the modern version of WoW, this Utopia of Runic Power generation from
反魔法护罩
is merely a long lost legend of the past. We are now very limitied in the ways we can generate Runic Power and we can't save up lots before the fight starts (Runic Power is pulled down to a value of 20 if we initiated the fight with a higher amount). We can now only generate it from damage sources that are not what we would consider "fire" in raiding terms. "Fire" consists of AoE abilities that affect some area on the ground for a specific period of time. Examples of this are

,

and

. First of all, if you pop

before running into these abilities, you will simply dodge the damage completely (more on this later). If you use
反魔法护罩
after you stand in the ability, the shield will deplete from the damage, but you will
not
generate any Runic Power.
Abilities that you can use to generate Runic Power can be thought of as direct-damage abilities. This means that they either hit you at a single instance (examples of this are
审判:清算
,
发怒
and
惩罚烈焰
) or they deal damage through a DoT with a finite length (examples are
昏睡妖术
and
液态黄金
)
Having covered the RP-generating aspect of this ability, let's now move on to what "preventing application of harmful magical effects" mean. This has far more uses than you might first think. Let's start by considering the dodging of ground-effects!
You can run through any ground-fire without taking any damage at all assuming you pop
反魔法护罩
before entering the fire. This won't deplete your
反魔法护罩
even though you would've been one-shotted without it (
死亡之雾
is a good example in this case). If you use
反魔法护罩
after you are inside, you'll take damage and the shield will eventually deplete. You might be surprised by some of the abilities that this works on! Historically, two good examples are
毁灭
on the Trilliax encounter and
奥能之环
on Elisandre.
You can also dodge the application of debuffs in an encounter! First of all, if you are targeted by a spell that just applied a debuff, you can use
反魔法护罩
to dodge this application. Examples are
吐金
on first boss in King's Rest,
恐惧之面
in Atal'Dazar (you avoid the fear) and
昏睡妖术
on Opulence (having
反魔法护罩
active when moving will dodge the application of the damage-dealing part of the debuff). Furthermore, you can avoid the targeting of certain spells on you by using
反魔法护罩
. If you use the shield before the spell comes out, you won't be eligible as a target, and someone else will therefore be targeted instead of you. Relevant example are
恶意妖术
on Conclave and
液态黄金
on Opulence.
Finally, you can dodge debuffs that come in conjunction with damage-dealing abilities, assuming the ability doesn't break your
反魔法护罩
. To understand this, let's consider
发怒
as an example. This abilitiy deals a burst of damage, and then applies a DoT afterwards (ordering here matters). If your shield survives the initial damage, it will shield you from the application that comes afterwards. However, if the damage is too large, your shield will break and you will gain the DoT. This means that using mitigation can be useful when soaking abilities with
反魔法护罩
. Using
冰封之韧
allows you to dodge two applications of the
发怒
debuff for instance!
Some abilities have a reversed order when it comes to damage versus debuff application. For instance,
寒冰之环
on Jaina will try to freeze you first, and then deal the damage. This means that you can stand in the ability with
反魔法护罩
, have it deplete your shield, but still not freeze you!
Festersniping
We previously discussed how we play around
爆裂之疡
in Mythic + situations. However, we didn't cover what happens after our
枯萎凋零
is finished and we still are left with a number of low-health mobs. We can here apply a technique which we call "Festersniping". Essentially, The most effective way of converting wounds from
脓疮打击
to AoE is not to burst them in our
枯萎凋零
window. We have to spend both time and Runes in order to cash in on the juicy AoE and strength. Instead, we can use the death of the mobs to do the work for us!
When a mob dies, all wounds currently stacked on it will explode, dealing AoE damage. We can, therefore, choose to use
脓疮打击
on mobs that are nearly about to die, sniping them in the trash pack. We instantly get the benefits from bursting the wounds without the tedious setup! This is especially effective on packs with a large range of health pools. You'll be able to snipe the weak mobs as you continue your burst on the large ones.
Another situation where this is useful is for packs with really low health. It dies before we have any time to set up anything substantial. We can then stack up wounds on a single mob, making sure it dies first by always targeting it. The wounds will then burst on the entire pack, allowing us to deal a substantial amount of damage without a long set up!

I have been leveling an Unholy DK because I just want to be an Unholy DK Necrolord badass riding around on a Tauralus. But I constantly feel like I am not playing my class correctly, or I don't understand how the abilities/cooldowns work because rotation pages just say.....do this do this do this do this do this if you are talented then do this. But now I finally get it, balancing pets, plagues, and sores seemed like a ton to do it, but seeing the synergies here makes it so easier to understand.
Now I'm just pissed there is server maitenance tonight that is gonna stop me from going nuts on my DK.
