My guess is that flametounge is for the elemental shammy being oom or having to many mobs interupting spells.

Does this proc clearcasting?

If not, I hope that, in next patch, where shaman clearcasting procs with ALL crits (meaning a higher proc rate for caster shammys), flametongue's crits also proc clearcasting.

And this gets +damage from spell damage, so it's the choice for elemental shaman.

A fun way to use flametongue is with this build.

Basically, you would want to wear elemental gear for +dmg. Get 2 very fast weapons (Pref caster daggers with low melee dmg and high +spell dmg) and enchant them both with flametongue.

With this build and gear, you'll be doing some very nice fire damage (or frost if you want frostbrand). Best thing is that crits with flametongue will be boosted by the elemental fury talent.
Melee crits will proc flurry for faster fire damage. Shock crits will proc elemental devastation which in turn will boost melee crit for some more flurry goodness, Oddly enough, this is the only use I've seen for this talent. Toss down a searing totem. I swear you will see numbers streaming up on your screen.

Of course I wouldn't pvp with this. But PVE grinding is great.

Another note is that you would want to avoid melee stats. That's why I havent taken any talents that would boost melee damage except for critical damage to proc flurry.

After the WF fix in 2.0.10, Flamtongue on the Off Hand would give the highest dps(Ofcourse WF on the main hand).
For pvp though, the Frostbrand slowing proc is really really sweet, but I'd still recommend 2handers for big chunks of damage.

The bonus damage from Flametongue is calculated before Attack speed modifiers. For example, proccing flurry will not decrease it.

it's better than RW (for low lvl at least)
maths says:
53AP/14=3.78dps, when FW does about 3.8 per hit with a ~1.00 fist that's ~3.8dps that isn't reduced by armor.
at 56, RW adds ~36dps (reduced by armor) vs about full 29.5dps (some resists so what?)with a 1.00 weapon
RW is only good when u're tanking and want to hold aggro
and also keep in mind that it's dmg is a bit higher (this gets resisted) than that of the holydmg factory pally's SoR (didn't compare it with SoC however it would lose)

If you ask me , for melee shammy windfury is best for all atack speed weapons , faster = more wf's (and non stop flurry), slower = more dmg when wf proc

But... we r talking here about the FW , if u use it - go slow weapons 2.90 - 4.00 , bcz rockbiter will be better on 1.30-2.80 atack speed weap's

btw Bliizard have to think about elemental shammys too - there is no good weapon buff for em , while i was elemental i was using Frostbrand weapon , but it dont help casting at all , since we have frost shock and earthbind totem :-/
plx make mana regen or +dmg/heal spells or whatever u pick from caster things

this or rockbiter hmm says on my spell it does 4.7 to 14.6 fire damage wish isent effected by armor while rockbiter only adds 4 dps so even if you use the fastest weapon it still does 0.7 more dps unless they resist btw i dont know if mobs genenerly have fire ristance not talking about fire elemtals =P but rockbiter, as someone already stated is reduced by armor correct me if im wrong but this IS better then rockbiter

If you're in a group and you're not the main tank make sure to use this instead of Rockbitter. If the time comes that you need aggro use Earth Shock.
