This ability was added in the patch 1.9 Paladin 'revamp', replacing the old Seal spell 'Seal of Fury' which increased the threat caused by the Paladins melee attacks. This spell has only recently become truly useful due to the 2.0 changes in Paladin tanking talents and abilities. With the new 'Improved Righteous Fury' protection talent, this buff will also reduce all damage taken by 6%. This ability really should be used before a fight due to the large mana cost, making buffing it during an encounter in order to quickly tank while healing or DPSing a pain. Still, in 2.0 this ability allows a tanking Paladin to produce more than enough threat, especially when coupled with 'Consecration' and 'Holy Shield' against multiple enemies.

Could anyone confirm what "the threat generated by your Holy spells" actually means? Does it mean your holy spell damage dealt, the general holy magic school or the actual holy spell book category of the paladin? Does this include your healing spells/effects?

I would assume that means any spell that is in the "holy" (as opposed to fire, nature, frost, shadow, etc) that causes threat will cause more threat.

So, throwing this up while healing to reduce damage taken is not wise since it will generate more threat from your heals?
This may be one of those "duh" things, but I kinda wan to see it in writing!

You may not notice it because healing threat for paladins is .25:1 (threat:heal), even with Imp RF you're at .47:1 (which is still less than any other healing class).
So, yes, righteous fury (and imp RF) DOES increase your healing threat. But since we're so low on healing threat as it is, it's not terribly much.

Any comments on the use of this skill?
I notice pallys walking around with it on all the time when the only time I think it would be useful would be in a group situation.
Am I wrong about this?

Does Righteous Fury only work on the spells in the Holy tab of spellbook and/or those in the holy tree?
Or does it increase threat from all holy damage, such as seals other than Seal of Righteousness.

it aproximatelly increases threat done by holy damage
however i would very much like this spell to negate the paladin innate -20% threat from heals. would make maintenance FoL on self between autoattacks when tanking actually worthwhile. what do u say?

It must be admitted that Paladins have a hard time tanking, and will go though thier Mana quickly, this is the best method for tanking I can tell for Paladins:
1. Be Protection, easiest way.
a.
(Current Talents)
b.
(Burning Crusade Talents)
2. Have this on.
3. Have Retribution Aura on.
4. Have Blessing of Sanctuary.
5. Have Holy Sheild on.
6. Have a Sheild Equiped.
7. Start the battle by using any opening abbility
a. (if non-Burning Crusade) release Seal of the Crusader.
b. (if Burning Crusade) use Avenger's Shield, unless you prefer to release Seal of the Crusader.
c. (if Undead enemy) use Excorism.
8. Release Seal of the Crusader, if you haven't yet.
9. Put on Seal of Rightousness.
10. Use Consecration.
11. If you lose aggro on mobs...
a. use Hammer of Justice, to stop the mob.
b. (if Undead enemy(s)) use Holy Wrath.
c. (if Burning Crusade) use Avenger's Sheild, or Righteous Defense.
d. (if at 20% health or less) use Hammer of Wrath.
e. (else) release and put back on Seal of Rightousness.
12. If mob runs.
a. put on and release Seal of Justice.
b. (if Undead) use with Holy Wrath.
c. (if at 20% or less health) use Hammer of Wrath.
d. (else) use Hammer of Justice.
That was actually a less Mana usage.
Edit: This buff is a usefull way when fighting a Shaman, Warrior, or any other class that can remove buffs, for having them use it against this instead.

My threat meter indicates to me that this does indeed effect healing. In addition, read the tooltip: "Increases the threat generated by your Holy spells".
I've been writing a pally tanking guide for my own amusement :P And I've tested it, and it works.
1 point of aggro for ever 4 points of healing for Paladins.
1 point of aggro for every 3 points of healing with RF up.
1 point of aggro for every 2 points of healing with Improved RF up.
But really, I doubt very much that Blizz intended us to heal to keep aggro. The spells are interruptible, and the aggro is so low for them. When I'm micromanaging my threat generation in addition to cleansing, taunting, and changing auras mid fight, I've got no time for a 1.5sec heal that could be interrupted anyway my experience has shown me.
But I'm sure we each play our chars differently and to different effect, that's just how I do it.

Improved Righteous Defense decreases damage taken. If a Paladin has this talent, it would make sense to use it at all times EXCEPT when in an instance where they're not tanking.

I never thought I would switch my main from my rogue to another class. (Leveled my Resto Shaman to 60 but thats as far he got.) When I tried a paladin, first 14 levels or so were ruff but I stayed with it so my friend could have someone to level with. The turning point for me was doing WC with him. We formed a group with 3 others. 2 hunters and another shaman. I had to kick the shaman for needing a cloak that was clearly for hunters or rogues. (Agi cloak off the lizard boss, don't recall the name.) Both hunters were furious and one of the hunters left. Shortly after that the other hunter d/c. So, there we were. Just us two. I was feeling froggy and said lets see how far we can get with just us two. He agreed and we pushed on. After the first 2 pulls we told each other we got this. Worked our way to Lord Serpentis and owned him. The huge elemental boss was a bit more difficult but we downed him too. (Had to use my LoH CD though.) After we finished he asked u wanna try the escort quest. I said yes of course and we worked our way back to the entrance. Cleared the repops and started the event. It was a joke. We owned the murlocs, then which appeared to be 8 oozes on the 2nd wave. We owned them. Then the boss came, and he was our tuffiest match because he constantly spam sleep on my shaman friend. He could only get one heal off before he was sleeped again. I healed myself when i got close to 20% but i didnt need to heal much. (BTW...I'm sure your aware of blessing of protection doesn't remove sleep effects.) :(
We downed him and we were so stoked. What we accomplished together and the phat Mail chest piece that screams paladin/warrior. That was the deciding factor for me and I've been playing my paladin ever since then. Keep in mind my Rogue was decked out in tier 2 gear and all I needed to do was push the limits of the my new class capabilites. ( Oh yeah, in case your wondering what levels we were when we attepmt this. I was level 22 and my shaman friend was 21.) Paladin and shaman combo is the best one two bunch by far. Sorry, but i had to drop the shadow priest and warlock from the top spot.
That was a story I wanted to share with you and to show how much I dig the class.
I dont understand the lack of detail in the descriptions on certain talents.
For example: Righteous Fury
I see holy paladins and protection spec pallys getting this. Why Holy? It states it increases an additional 50% threat from your holy spells. I first thought it was all spells. Holy light, Seal of Righteousness, Retribution Aura....you get the idea. Everything! All the Holy paladins (which is i think 85% of the paladins at 70 are on my server) I know (not personally) have Righteous Fury. Then I started thinking it was just the holy spells that was cast on the mob. (Holy shield, your judgements..etc) Common sense starts to kick in and it's telling me not to assume but to get the facts. I would love to get it with my paladin. That 6% damage reduction would be nice to have in instances and grinding. Right now where I stand is at 60% D/R with my normal buffs and shield. That would be a 10% increase. Like I said, it could be used all the time. Somebody please help. I'm level 69 and I have my spot locked up for Kara and I'm the only paladin. I'll personally log on server and grind 10g and answer any question you ever had about a rogue. See how desperate I am. Tired of getting mixed answers.

I played a Paladin for... well more than most of the entirety of the game. I wanted to be a Tankadin so badly but when i started guilding i was forced into the healing roll...
As a paladin you don't have to heal. Paladins can do everything short of huge ranged damage. There are several articles that have been printed about the tanking capabilities of paladins.
When I'm ready... no warrior will ever out tank me.
Like before, when I was ready, no priest or druid could out heal me.

Are just great. They can tank pretty well, they can heal very well, and they can DPS moderately well.
But their true strength comes from combining these three roles, and any guild leader who pigeonholes a pally into the healing role is only hurting the raid.
Paladins can assist heal while DPSing with their mighty hammers; with Judgment of Wisdom on the mob this is actually a very good idea because they'll never run out of mana. They can off-tank with the added bonus of being able to self-heal at the same time thanks to Concentration Aura and the same Judgment of Wisdom.
There are definitely times where a pally shouldn't be up there - mobs with heavy damage auras for example, to avoid wasting mana on self-healing, and when he's acting as the main healer - but nobody should universally stop a pally from doing what he was meant to do.
Leading the world to its salvation with the Holy Light and a Really Big Hammer.

Please forgive my ignorance, when they say, "Increases the threat generated by your Holy attacks.." does "Holy" refer to another spell or a talent or is it just a Paladin's normal melee attacks?

ANYTHING the pally does thats using holy generates hate....meaning healing, consecration, seal of rightousness...so forth
