Don't bother getting rank 5, just stick with rank 1. You do not use the spell for damage - 100 damage at this level is pathetic anyway. Save your gold and mana.
This is a very useful spell, allowing you to step/blink back and fire away. Effective in soloing, or mass PvP charge. Also helpful in chasing runners, although the range is somewhat short. One of the most used spells.
Frostbite, a talent, gives similar results - every time you chill someone they have a chance of freezing.
This is one of the most important spells in the mage's selection, as mages are "clothies" and as such, MUST avoid melee combat. This spell allows that.
It is also the reason that mages are very good at defending in WSG, as they can stop several enemies in the flag room, for the mage's teammates to destroy.
For you potential Frost Mages out there, here is a helpful hint:
When you get to the point where upgrading your Frost Nova, this is a must have. Once you spec this up, go for Shatter in your Frost talent tree. This is pretty much the only reason you go frost mage because it makes you crit very often.
So now when you use Frost Nova, they get frozen, as quickly as possible hit them with all the frost spells you got. This will do about 1000 damage everytime.
Melee classes hate mages almost only because of this spell. Use this to freeze them in place and blink to safety (or run if you don't have blink), then blast them from your new location to seal the deal. Melee classes who can't get close to their targets are doomed. >=D
i am a frost and arcane mage, everyone i have talked to, hates it when mages use frost nova and then run around them at a safe point and cast the aoe arcane until they are dead ,, which for me its fun bc if u have the skills and know your class of a mage good, u can take out about 4 at a time , while u run in circles .. just make sure u have a big mana pool :)
frost nova is a very usfall spell for getting out of warrior owning me right now situations. you just frost and blink very simple but very effective.
This is very usefull when AoE grinding, You can hold off the enemys from attacking you, if you did you wouldnt be able to channel blizzard because of it beeing canceled. Also used to travel and stop what ever is chasing you, Blink and Frost Nova works very well.
rank 1 frostbolt owns the highest rank. you can just as easily kite any melee with it and frost nova rank 1 would just ice the cake.
Heard they were renaming this "Freeze".
You might want to note that Mobs will always try to attack something. So if you frost nova them and you're then out of reach they'll try and attack something else unfriendly, in my case it was the level 17 Warlock I was twinking through Deadmines that had decided to stand in the middle of the group of mobs I was aoe-ing... Not a good sight. This is probably one of the few cases in which mobs will ignore their agro-metres.
Unfortunately, as of patch 2.0.10 Frost Nova will now break on first crit, regardless. This was to prevent Ice Lance spamming.
how big is the radius of this spell?
god this is one of the most useful skill a mage has. 55 mana for an 8 second root is absolutely AMAZING. plus 55 mana is practically nothing at later levels
yea, lol . . . a bit dense there, dude. I think it became a tad obvious when he said only a certain nationality would understand this, lol. Remember to read an ENTIRE post, and understand it, before looking dumb. Granted, you amused me, so I forgive you.
Heh, granted could just because my guild for some reason is full of Aussies (in a US server, not sure if Australia uses the same realms, but I can't complain, it's a damn good guild :P), and I've picked up on their sense of humor, or I really need a new group of friends not using that kind o'ineundo, lol.
This spell rocks, and the short cooldown should allow you to use it every battle. This is a nice "panic button" if you pull to many mobs or get ambushed in PvP. Just cast it, then Blink away.
Well... I guess Gnomes, Mages, Priests, and Shaman can dispel it or escape.
absoulute best spell ever, except fo maybe ice barrier (this is mage speaking) im lvl55 and this is the best spell a mage could have because it allows you to blink away then start destroying the enimie with barely a scrtch on me
and guys, its not root, its nova....
My question is this: Does arcane explosion break Frost Nova? (i don't play mage) If it doesn't, would useing frost nova on melee-classes targets + spamming Cone of Cold & Arcane Explosion + using cold snap and a second frost nova be a good strategy?
In the words of Fabio
Galacticus...one you can't spam CoC its on a cool down and there is a change that any damage will break it...64 undead mage...Burning Legion...
Guys, i have 1 question. Does an Additional damage from pyroblast or Fireball breaks the Frost nova?
First of all please read the description of the spell. It can be broken by any damage but can also keep the enemies rooted. I managed to clear a whole load of mobs with blizzard before the root broke. It is an excelent spell to use to get out of tricky situations. I'd like to share this little tactic with all you mages out there: Me and my friend are both mages( 64 and 66 to be precise ) and we came up with a tactice we call crossfire. Because we dont have a tank we had to come up with this ourselves and use it a lot. We're both frost specced so this works even better. One mage blinks past a group of enemies and one mage stays behind. Then both mages run into the enemies, one uses arcane explosion and the other frost nova ( slightly after aracance explosion ). Now the enemies are rooted we both blink forward, turn around then both use Blizzard. This slows them down and may break the root so we boht run through again and the other uses frost nova whilst arcane explosion then both blink ( or run depending on cooldown), turn around then use blizzard again. We may do this a third time if the enemies are still above, or on, half health. If the enemies are below we run thorugh them again and use all our AoEs and fireblast and scorch on individuals. Using this method we can clear dungeons that are meant to be tackled with a group and because mages can make free food and water and mana crystals downtime is extremely low. Thought I'd share it with all mages as it can be done after level 22 (when you learn scorch) or even level 20 as the minimum (when you learn Blizzard). It nets serious xp and you just need two mages to do this. I'd only advise doing it in later dungeons once you have improved Blizzard as this keeps the enemies in place for the next frost nova. Cone of Cold can be used to slow enemies down if needed so you can get some arcane missiles or fire balls in if you want. This tactic really does work on dungeons which are your level and usualy require a full party! And the root joke is funny but I laughed even more when the guy thought he was being serious about the root effect ^^. Till then ( or my next post have fun playing and remember to travel in Azeroth but more importantly travel outside of Azeroth with real mates! ( my mage friend goes to same school as me so...)
