This guide is to setting up and making the most of the Recruit-a-Friend system in World of Warcraft.
Please note this guide is no longer current. The systems explained in this guide are retired, and replaced with a new system. The rewards are also currently legacy, meaning you can't obtain them unless you've already recruited older accounts. Please see our newer guide for details on the new system -
Recruit a Friend Program - Setup, Rewards, Renowned Explorer Transmog Guide
.
Throughout this guide, the term 'Veteran Account' refers, as it does in Blizzard's documentation, to the account sending the invitation. 'New Account' refers to the account receiving the invitation.
BFA Changes
With the removal of the Blizzard Battle Chest, the Recruit-a-Friend rewards have also been updated.
Blizzard
Use the Recruit A Friend button on the in-game Friends List to send a customized email invitation to your friends. Once they accept and create an account, you will be linked with your recruit so that you can find them in-game.
New
If your friend pays for two months of game time, you'll get a month of game time FREE!
If your friend pays for three months of game time, you'll receive a choice of EPIC in-game mounts or special pets.
Old
If your friend purchases a full copy of World of Warcraft and pays for a month of subscription time, you'll get 30 days of game time FREE!
if your friend pays for two full months of game time, you'll receive a choice of EPIC in-game mounts or special pets.
Patch 7.3.5 Changes
In Patch 7.3.5, the XP boost gained from the Recruit-A-Friend program when playing with a linked friend is down from 200% (300% XP vs. base XP) to 50% (150% XP vs. base XP). In addition, the XP bonuses provided by heirlooms do not stack with the RAF bonuses.
Setting Up Recruit a Friend
In 2013, the process for setting up Recruit a Friend linking was greatly simplified. It's entirely carried out in game, and in order to get started you need to follow a few simple steps:
Open up your Friends List and click the Recruit a Friend button
This will bring up a screen that allows you to enter the new account's email address and a brief message. It's worth noting that you can refer your own Battle.net account and add a new Starter Edition to the same account.
Your friend will then receive an email:
Clicking the link in the email will direct the New Account to a Battle.net landing page where they can log in to their Battle.net account, if they have one, or choose to create a new Battle.net account. It's worth noting at this stage that characters can be transferred across Battle.net accounts only if both have the same name. If you're RaF-ing yourself, you may benefit from creating a new WoW account within your existing Battle.net account.
Regardless of Battle.net account choice, the new account will be prompted to download a new Starter Edition. This isn't necessary if you already have WoW on your machine -- just log in with the details you have given Battle.net, and ensure the New account is selected in the client.
At this point, you should see a new account added to your list in the Battle.net client, this is the New Account, and your original one is the Veteran Account.
Both accounts will then need to log in, and add each other as friends. Character friends or Battle.net friends will work just fine. Once you have the other account on your friends list, you can tell if the link was successful by looking for this additional button next to the other account's entry on the list.

Summoning your Friend
Friend summoning functions in many respects like a Warlock or dungeon stone summon, except additional characters are not necessary to cast it. To use the spell,
the two characters must be grouped
and the summoner selects "Summon Friend" from the context menu by right-clicking on the target character's portrait, or from the friends list.
This spell has a thirty-minute cooldown. The cooldown is not shared among characters -- each character may perform one friend summon every thirty minutes. Also, the cooldown is not shortened by guild perks, talents, or glyphs that otherwise affect hearthstones or summons.
Characters on either account can summon characters on the other account. The summon works in or out of dungeons. In addition to getting two same-level characters together for questing, this can also be helpful to get new characters to otherwise hard-to-reach areas.
The only major limitation on this ability is that characters over the Recruit-a-Friend level maximum (currently 90) cannot be the
recipient
of a friend summon. Maximum level characters can still
cast
the summon.

Bonus XP Limitations
When a character from one account plays any element of the game with a character from the other account, both are eligible to receive a 150% bonus to experience gained. This boost is
in addition
to bonuses from guild perks and in-game buffs (e.g. holiday rewards or guild banners). Heirloom buffs do not stack in 7.3.5.
The multiplier applies to experience rewarded from completing quests and killing monsters. It does not work for XP from discovering new areas.
In order for the bonus to remain active, the following restrictions apply:
You must be grouped -- the link is not enough on its own, the two characters must be in a group together.
You must be in range of each other -- the range is fairly generous, but not infinite. You can test its limitations by killing mobs on one character and seeing if the other gains bonus XP.
You must not be more than four levels apart -- it can be necessary to grant levels or level separately to maintain this low separation
A quest or monster that is "grey" difficulty to either character will not get the bonus experience.
Note that you do not need to be in a group with your partner when you get a quest or complete quest requirements; You only need to be in range of your grouped leveling buddy when you
turn in
the quest to receive the extra experience. The flip side of this is that if a follow-up quest automatically takes you out of range (e.g. puts you on a flight or changes the phase you are in) you should make sure that both characters turn in the quests and receive the bonus before either character starts the next quest.
The additional experience will be indicated in the combat or chat log (assuming experience gains are set to display) in a note next to the experience received. E.g. "Dire Mottled Boar dies, you gain 96 experience. (+64 exp Refer-A-Friend bonus)".
Top
Cross-Realm Groups
Two characters linked by RAF that are in a party and near each other, regardless of what server they are on, will continue to receive triple experience while they are in a group together and within range. This works out in the world as well as in dungeons.
Granting levels does not work across realms.
Top
Granting Levels
For every two levels that a character on the new account receives, that character accumulates one level that can be "granted" to a character on the Veteran Account. These levels can only be given to a character of a lower level than the grantor, and may not be granted to a character higher level than the Recruit-a-Friend benefit cap (currently 90).
Levels are awarded one at a time by clicking on the character portrait and selecting "Grant level." Each level must be accepted manually, similar to a summon. If the granted level is not accepted, it is not deducted from the character's reserve of grantable levels. It will also silently fail and not deduct from the pool if a level is granted to a character that cannot level (due to not owning an expansion or due to visiting the "Experience Eliminator" NPC in-game).
If a character on the new account goes from level 1 to level 90 (or higher), that character has 44 levels to give to any character or combination of characters on the Veteran Account. Similarly, if the player using the new account levels two characters to 90, then the player on the Veteran Account can create a new character and nearly instantly elevate it to level 89.
Of particular note, the level grant action keeps a character's XP at the same percentage of the bar -- so it is advantageous to have a character at 80-99% of a level before granting.
Top
Benefits and Rewards of Recruit a Friend
The Veteran Account receives the following perks:
Free Game Time
- If the new account purchases
two
months of game time, the Veteran Account receives 30 days of play time credit
In-Game Reward
- If the new account purchases
three
of game time, the Veteran Account can choose one of eight special rewards. These are all account-wide.
烬鬃战马
翡翠角鹰兽
夜翼之心
X-53型观光火箭
迅捷斑马
金猪硬币
银猪硬币
碧玉虎
紫袍玉虎
Grant Levels
- The new account can grant levels to characters on the Veteran Account, subject to certain limitations, allowing the veteran player to rapidly level an alt even faster than the 150% experience benefit.
Both accounts receive the following perks:
Experience Bonus
- Experience points rewarded from quests and killing monsters is scaled 150% for 90 days
Reputation Bonus
- Faction reputation rewarded from quests and killing monsters is scaled by 110% (+0.1x) for 90 days
Summon Friend
- Each character may summon a character from the other linked account every 30 minutes for 90 days
Recruit a friend bonuses relating to XP and reputation stop at level 90. They are also limited to
90 days
after the accounts are linked, so don't delay taking advantage of them. The mounts, pets and game time, of course, can be used above that.

Potential issues of Recruit-a-Friend
There are some downsides to using the Recruit-a-Friend system.
The pacing of leveling in World of Warcraft has been intensely analyzed and implemented by Blizzard to allow a player time to learn a new class in a systematic way. Spells are awarded in small doses, and players are usually given a few levels to figure out how a spell works (or doesn't) and what circumstances it might be useful. Leveling up at triple speed (or faster, using the level grants) bypasses most of WoW's "tutorial" system, and players may find themselves having to effectively re-learn their class at max level. That said, leveling content is largely trivial in difficulty, so don't be afraid to jump in!
Leveling at triple speed also tends to mean that your characters leave questing areas before finishing everything available and moving on to the next zone or dungeon early (because the quests turn green or grey). This can mean that you will often fail to refresh a character's gear in every slot and end up at a high level with 1-2 low-level items still equipped. This might involve spending money at the auction house to supplement quest rewards. This gets particularly problematic at expansion crossover points (60, 70, 80, etc) where power levels on gear shoot up. You can easily get green gear on the Auction House to supplement your items, and there are vendors selling blues at key progression points, such as
爱莉丝·月梦
in Mount Hyjal and
石语者埃鲁纳克
in Vash'jir for level 80s or the various
Adventuring Supplies vendors
in Mists of Pandaria.

Quick Guide to Recruiting Yourself
A lot of people principally use the service to recruit themselves, so it seems useful to add a section dedicated to that.
General Info
First up, it isn't against the rules to recruit yourself, whatever your reason for doing so. You can recruit yourself because you want the mounts or pets or in order to multi-box and boost characters up to higher levels with ease.
If you're RaFing yourself, you can easily run two instances of WoW on one PC - just ensure the second one is running on low settings if you're having framerate issues. You can start both accounts via the Battle.net app. You may need to log into your main account within the game, but don't be alarmed, it will still work.
Multiboxing is a useful way to get levels easily in the world, especially with two characters. Good starter multi-boxing software could be something like
HotKeyNet
which comes with standard
WoW Scripts
.
Steps to getting set up
You'll need to follow the
Setup Guide
above for the initial steps, with these tips in mind:
Send the email from the in-game system to whatever email address you like - it can even be the one you logged in with
Use your existing Battle.net account when it's requested unless you have a reason to create a new one. This saves running two Battle.net clients as well as two instances of WoW.
Run both instances of WoW from the same client by selecting them from the list separately.
Use the character-level friend option to add the New Account to the Veteran Account's list
Add subscription time to the New Account, not the Veteran Account, in order to receive the Veteran Account benefits listed above.

I'm sure I won't be the only one with this question, so I'll ask it to benefit everyone: You ONLY get a reward mount if the toon you're referring pays for 3 months of gametime, right? Not all at once necessarily, just three months total, even at a monthly sub?

So, what does "full retail license" mean? Does it mean that the account has to acquire the Battle Chest AND the WoD expansion, or is the Battle Chest enough?
评论来自
Darthdaditz2
Actually, if the person you are recruiting buys a 3 month pre-paid subscription card and enters the code, you get the mount at that time, otherwise you have wait until they have paid for 3 months. I keep 2 inactive accounts for just such occasions!

Will I need to upgrade from a Starter Edition to a basic WoW Chest? Because i'm not able to add gametime to a starter account. I emailed myself, logged in and it created a starter account under my veteran account, I thought if I just added game-time to the NEW account I would be able to get the mount but that's not the case? Do I also have to buy a Battle Chest AND 2 months of game-time?
评论来自
Shark5060
it's also good to mention that you "friend" has to buy TWO month of gametime before you get your mount as a reward.
Taken from
https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/recruit-a-friend
:
Recruit buys: one month of gametime - you get one free month
Recruit buys: two month of gametime - you get an epic mount
it is (no longer?) enough to just buy a battlechest.
So with the free 30 days from the battle chest, you would have to wait 2 month (+ at least 7 days, because of the chargeback protection) until you get your rewards. You might even have to wait 10 days more if your friend decides to use the 10 days free WoD before buying the addon.

If I missed the information in the guide somewhere, please forgive the oversight (I did try searching the page before posting!). The new RAF program is being promoted with the "Cindermane Charger" mount. I'm not seeing information anywhere on where/how that's available with the new RAF. It's not one of the current 8 reward options that I could see. Could someone please help me find out where / when this mount may be available?
Thank you!

maybe i am missing something, i followed the steps listed above for the "veteran" and recruit account.. on my "recruit" i have a total of 3 months game time on it.. but where is this "character level friend option?" i'm using the same battle net app on the desk top just open the drop down to select which account i want to log into.. but its been about week since i did all this and still nothing in my email attached to the game or in game mail regarding the mount? something i miss? when i log into my battle.net account it shows NO recruit a friend under the referrals/rewards. the "recruit" account is active and has mists of pandaria, do i need it to be FULLY upgraded to WoD, in order to receive the benfits?

I've done this a few times in the past but I still had to check the WoW site because the guide and the comments are (IMO) misleading.
The recruit purchases and the Veteran rewards are as follows:
One month of game time - One month of free game time
A
second
month of game time - One of eight epic mounts or pets (their choice)
Note that it's
not
one month and then two more months (three months in total); it's one month and then a second month (
two months' game time in total
). I hope this information saves someone some money!

Hi, this may seem a daft Q to some but i´m not sure about.
Can I RAF that already has an account, but is not active? ie has not played in over 2 years. Would they have to start a new account, re-purchase the game & buy game-time? or could they just purchase game time on existing frozen account? if so, would we instantly lose xp benefits if they had an existing level 85 char on that account?
Hope it makes sense & someone can give me a fail-safe answer.
Thnx all in advance GLHF ;-)

Does anyone know if you can use the Game Tokens on the recruited account so the person that recruited will get credit? I've searched the RaF FAQ and I didn't see anything. I'm guessing that's because the Tokens are still a very new feature. I'm curious to know if it would work though :)

This is an extremely useful guide, but I believe your math may be wrong here (or more likely, it simply got overlooked when the guide was updated):
If a character on the new account goes from level 1 to level 90 (or higher), that character has
40 levels
to give to any character or combination of characters on the Veteran Account.
Wouldn't that be 45 levels, not 40?
Thank you for writing this!

Hey, first of all, thanks for the guide, it's pretty well made!
I have a question though, so, I remember with the old RaF you had a list of all the accounts you had previously recruited/been linked with and their status (time left before link expires, starter edition, bought battlechest, bought 1 month game time, bought 2 month game time + reward etc.) but I can't seem to find that any more, is that gone or is the link buried somewhere does anyone know? Otherwise, how the heck do I see which accounts with expired 90 day links to see how many months left they need to buy?

Does the two-month prepaid cards count for each of the months to get the mount? That's 30 something dollars right there...
Or does it have to be two separate months of $15~'s to get the mount? I'm trying to recruit my friend for Christmas and it would be so easy if I can just get the card and give her the code.
A different friend of mine said that if I do the card that I'd be "wasting" the other half of the card because I'd have to buy a second $30 pre-paid card.

Hush564
To clarify another point that I am having trouble grasping.
So, I buy my RAF the standard game and that will give us the one month free thingy right? AND THEN, during ANY of that time I can give them the code for 2 months from a prepaid, physical card.. and THAT will give me the mount after the 7 day process time?

In-Game Reward - If the new account, after upgrading to a full license of World of Warcraft, pays for two months of game time, the Veteran Account can choose one of
eight
special rewards. These are all account-wide.
With the addition of the Cindermane Charger, it's now
nine
rewards (mounts/pets)...and with the December sale going on, it's hard not to buy these up like hotcakes...only question is which one do I want first?
Second question, why doesn't Blizzard have a cart option? In-store pets and mounts are also on sale and I'm not liking the idea of entering my info over and over (even if it's saved, the bank could flag your card and that happens more often during the holidays!)

Just as a general question for the RAF system.
In the event you send a RAF request to a friend who then buys the base game & the current expansion. If they purchase a boost from the store or use one given with Legion.
Are they then allotted to grant the ~45 levels to a toon on the requestors account?

Excellent guide. A question about the rewards. If the new account buys a gametime card from local brick&mortar store and applies it. Does the veteran account still get the rewards? Or does subscription through credit card/paypal only work?
评论来自
Arayh
BEWARE! If you are RAF-ing yourself to get a mount, they implemented a 7 day waiting period after you apply the 60 days of game time. UNLIKE before when the mount was applied instantly.
And they hide it under the conditional: "may be subject to 7 days of processing time."
This waiting time was to prevent credit card fraud/scamming, however for people who are RAFing themselves to get a mount, it has become just an annoyance.

Hi, wanted to try RAF myself to get gametime and the mount. Does the veteran and recruit account have separate instances? Like if veteran recruited himself and the recruit added 2months gametime does it not count to veteran account also cause its the same bnet account? So the veteran can have 1free month then 2months from the self recruit process?

"This boost is in addition to bonuses from guild perks, heirloom items,..."

OK 7.2 Information:
So far by experimentation, will update with confirmations:
1. Recruit an email address (You)(Friend)(Whatever)
2. Answer the recruitment and make new account for that email address.
3. Buy and apply the came code. (World of Warcraft on Gamestop was ~ $15)
That gave you 1 month of "free" time, and didn't count toward the rewards.
4. Buy and apply a 60 day code. (Game Card from store, or "Download" on Gamestop, $30)
That gave you 2 month of purchased time, and does count toward the rewards.
Specifically: One month of "free" time for your Veteran Account & The Recruit A Friends Reward
5. Wait 7 Days to the minute (Fraud Protection period for Blizzard)
Now you will get your reward choice.
6. Log in, select the Social Box, click the RaF Button, Choose your reward.
7. Repeat. (if you have more friends, or want to "buy" more pets/mounts)
Although I'm not sure why Blizzard doesn't just make a 2 seat flying mount, and put it on the store for $60, it would save tons of database space...

My question is can she apply the 2 month game time for the mount separately? As in, buy the 1 month to activate it and then apply the second month when she gets more money?

Quick question for the "Recruiting Yourself" section of the guide:
Do you have to purchase the game if you RAF with your own battlenet account? This isn't clear in that section. It just says you have to purchase the game time with the new WoW account.
评论来自
Fakepick
As of 7.3.5, the experience bonus is a lot different and nerfed - it went from 300% to 150% experience. In the recruit a friend, you might as well figure how to get your friend a set of heirlooms - which will benefit them down the road - as them wearing heirlooms is equal to how much bonus XP you get compared to recruit a friend. So those who plan on recruiting yourself, don't bother unless you really want the mount. It's not worth the trouble for the experience bonus if you already have a full set of heirlooms.
