More explosions! We need more explosions!

He is an elite who hits quite hard, but the most damagerous is he calls running bombs into your group which explode and do quite a bit of damage.
The trick is, you need to have one person in your party dedicated to running around pushing the big red buttons on the pillars that launch the bombs. If the pillars is glowing with green electricity, it needs to be shut down by pushing the button. Thermaplugg will reactivate them by shooting lightning at them. Keep the pillars deactivated and Thermaplugg is easy.

Don't underestimate the buttons! If the guy who presses them does a bad job, (unless you have a high lvl helping you), your party will wipe - the bombs do a considerable amount of damage. As long as one person keeps running and pressing the buttons, it's fine - Thermaplugg himself is relatively easy to kill, considering that you've managed to do the rest of Gnomeregan. But the guy has to keep running and clicking.
Use a DPS person to do it, perhaps a mage as they can blink every now and then - each button is about 20 yards apart.

This battle is considerably much harder if you don't push the buttons. But luckily, its not very hard to push the buttons, just make sure the guy doing it isn't
A. killed by the gnome, or bombs.
B.Trying to get the group killed. (Seriously)
Aslo if you have a gnomish universal remote, you can use it on the bombs and make it blow up on the boss.

I have found it beneficial to perform this encounter by splitting the 6 bomb dispensers into two groups of three and designating 1 DPS person to each group. Having one person disable all of them usually leads to a few bombs getting dispensed when two get activiated at almost the same time, and those few bombs can be the difference between loot and a wipe.
Just have each of the two DPS people attack Thermaplugg and run for a bomb dispenser when one in their group gets activated.

When you fight him, at least if you don't notice the trick, you'll be swarmed by many, many, many bombs that explode on you and kill you, no matter how big or high level your party

The boss is not to bad like said above if u kill the bombs be4 they reach ur group. We beat him easialy with 32, 32, 32, 34, 36. The 32 mage and i (32 preist at time) sat back any desroyewd the bombs while 32 rogue 34 war and 36 lock unleashed hell on the boss.
In my opinoin if u can make it past the alarms and elites to the boss room u an own the boss no 50+ nessesary.
(well unless an alarm goes off the u need a epic 60 to save ur ass cause u so screwed).

Just go all out DPS, use poisons, etc, you can kite him around the room a bit to avoid some of the bombs. If you are alone, don't bother with the buttons, i still had 1/2 health left when i tried as 60. Evasion/CB/prep/evasion/CB = dead.
kind of crap drops for hi-lvls but i came for the discombob schematic and killed the bosses while there...

I just did it. Just snuck/ran through most of it, had to feign a couple times. At thermaplug I killed guards inside and outside of door, set a immo trap, sent pet in and plugged away at him until I aggroed, then melee until he and rest of guards died. My pet died. The safe is in one of the back corners of the rooms, don't forget to get the blueprints.

We just gave up Gnomeregan after wiping at this boss. I was the tank, Druid 36. Had a druid 39 healer, warlock 34 and shaman 37.
In addition to the mighty annoying (and of course hurting) bombs, the problem is that he has a knockback attack which removes all aggro from the current target (top of the hate list). Then the boss starts attacking the one with the second-highest aggro value, which is most often the healer. To build up aggro again you first have to get into range (Feral Charge was useful, Intercept for warriors. He was immune to the movement-impairing effect from Feral Charge though), then taunt him and have some rage ready to re-build aggro quick. The trick to tanking him is to not use all rage to keep aggro. Use enough to keep him at you, save the rest. When he then uses the knockback attack, intercept/feral charge him, taunt, then use your rage to build up a solid aggro again. Then save up new rage.
We did not wipe because I couldn't hold aggro well enough. We wiped because we didn't have enough dps with us. The warlock was busy stopping the bombs. Just one more dps and we'd made it. Too bad the mage left at the first wipe... We brought him down to about 30%, but then the healer was all out of mana and I died. Might have made it if the other druid had taken over the tanking, but without enough mana to shapeshift...
He does not seem to be immune to stun, so I guess it's easier for warriors to tank him. They will after all stun him with their intercept, giving you a bit more time to build up aggro.
I believe the knockback attack was added recently, because I can't remember it from the last time I killed him, and that was some time ago. Perhaps Blizzard thought he wasn't hard enough and added it. Now it's hard enough, though.

We tird this guy 3x with a 38 hunter, a 26 pally and a 43 pally and got wiped 3x. Tried several combos, first with the 26 pally healing and button pushing, the 38 hunter doing button pushing with aspect of the cheetah to improve speed and his pet and the 43 pally attacking. Other tries were with the 26 pally attacking also and with the 26 pally just healing. Each scheme worked great until the kickback on the 43 pally came, then Mek creamed either the hunter or the 26 pally, and got the other one on the next kickback. Inevitably it came down the the 43 pally vs Mek plus a load of bombs. Bottom line, with the kickback you need either a second line that can take some damage, better dps than we had, more people or the ability to freeze Mek longer or more often that two pallys can generate. The kickback and elimiation of aggro from the primarly dps makes this guy a bunch tougher than he used to be.

90% of the posts on this guy have been higher lvls yapping about how easy it is to solo this guy. Gnomer is a mid-30's instance, if you can't solo him at higher lvls you need to shoot yourself in the face. Nobody cares about how easy it is for the 60 to solo a lvl 36 boss.
The only special attack I've seen this guy throw out is the knockback. Beyond that, just put someone on button duty to keep the bombs down.

Nice tactics everyone but the easiest way has not been mentioned:
The Gnomish Universal Remote.
The Remote has a 0% fail chance against Thermaplugg, wich means it clearly never fails against him.
Make sure at least one guy in your group has this trinket and use it on him before even agroing him.
As long as he's under your control he can't activate the bombs and he can't damage you.
Also, his HP decreases radically, wich gives the rest of your group the chance to quickly finish him off without him even fighting back.
It's the most fun and easiest way of doing the job.
You might wanna have 2 guys in your group with the remote in case you cant kill him in one minute.
The remote is very handy in the rest of the instance too (against mechanicals anyway).
Make sure you dont walk too far away with him, because then it dispells and you have the cooldown wich could be your end if you're not prepared.
Keep Thermaplugg close to your toon and when the minute is almost over it depends; if you have enoug health and therma is almost dead just finish him off, if not, have another guy use the remote on him and finish him.

The thing that really bites about doing this boss and the quest is the lack of a decent reward for cloth wearers. Triprunners are awesome leggings for a rogue or hunter or feral druid, and the mail legs are great for the warriors and pallies.
That Cividad robe? Ugh. Not even close in quality. Tons of spirit, no intellect. None. Zero. IMO, the best reward is the trips for rogues and hunters; my hunter wore hers until level 40 (when she swapped mostly to mail, as decent pieces became available) and had been wearing them since level 25, the first level at which you can get the quest.
I highly recommend hunters and feral druids and rogues to get that quest at level 25 and have a friend take you through since a group won't. I die several times when I do this at 25 on a new toon, but it's worth it to get the leggings (either pair) -- doing it on my 25 priest, I DE'ed the robe -- I have a better one, and enjoyed the consolation prize of Acidic Walkers, a very nice consolation prize indeed for the clothies amoung us.
We managed it with a sixty warrior and a 25 (dinged 26 mid instance) priest spamming heals on the warrior. At that low level, I aggroed mobs from across the instance :P
I wonder one thing: Why give the quest if doing it at the level you get it is considered "twinking" or "powerlevelling" -- My point of view has always been that if you can get the quests, you're meant to be doing them. Gnomer at 25, ZF at 40, Maraudon at 45. But rarely does anyone agree, even though those quests are sitting in their quest log.

I ran into trouble once I hit the dark irons as a 49 warlock. The biggest annoyance on the way was that my vw ae taunt didn't quite cover all the hps of the little dudes while clearing... so I'd end up with them charging me when at 1/3 life, screwing with aeing. I'll probably go back in my mid 50s... hoping for engineering drops.

I've solo'd this guy multiple times now, and the bombs can indeed be a pain. Make sure you ALWAYS have a potion ready when killing this guy, I've never used one yet, but the bombs got me down to around 600hp twice. (Killed him 6 times on my own now) I have to say I'm a combat rogue with 19 sec evasion. It could be that for other talent builds this guy can be a lot harder. Got the Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator yesterday and even for a rogue it's pretty cool. (10 minutes damage shield on it for 5 damage) And it looks great of course ;)

I dont believe a 50 rogue can do this solo. Maybe if someone was pressing the buttons for you. My 60 rogue can barely do this solo and only with using a health potion. I call BS
Not BS m8. My lvl 39 combat rogue soloed thermaplug. Granted I've invested a lot in potions, bombs and gnomish engineering items (namely harm prevention belt, netomatic projector and mechanical dragonling) but it is totally possible. I'm not even that great a rogue.
If you couldn't do it with a lvl 60 rogue I shall retort your accusation of 'BS' with a counter accusation that either you are still wearing your level 10 greens, or you are a lame rogue.
Don't BS people, especially when a lot of people have soloed thermaplug before level 40.

Duo'd this. (actually a long time ago, but since people seem to have trouble with him, I'll share how we did it)
32 holy paladin
32 frost mage
We probably only won because we spent most of these 32 levels playing together, and knew each other all too well.
In preparation we both had mana potions, I had a few health potions, I conjured every mana gem I could, we used various Scrolls of Strength, Spirit, Stamina, etc. We also had prepared a crapload of grenades (we are both engineers), I had a gnomish net-o-matic projector, he had a shrink ray. We both equipped universal remotes, and had minor run speed enchants on our feet. I backtracked to find two of the firewalker mecha, and kited them down to Thermaplugg. And then we were ready.
As for the fight itself...
I continued kiting one while the paladin used his remote to control the other, and had the charmed mech start beating on Thermaplugg. When it was almost dead, I used my remote on my own mech, and had it tanking Thermaplugg when the first one died. By the time this one died off, Thermaplugg was down to roughly 80%!
The way we dealt with the bombs was to not bother pushing the buttons. Rather, we pumped Thermaplugg with single target damage, and as bombs came out we would run in large circles to kite them into a cluster right on top of Thermaplugg. Then we dropped grenades, my AoE, and the kitchen sink, and destroyed them before they become a problem. Used potions and such whenever they became available. Barely pulled it off.
In other words, we used every trick in the book, but nothing people shouldn't be familiar with. People are just accustomed to being slackers :P

Killed him last night, alone. i'm a feral druid, level 42. i just stealth past the guards, get inside, buff up (i use a +15 Agility potion, a +50 Armor potion Rumsey Rum Light for +5 Stamina and during the fight a greater healing potion), and start as a cat, with ravage.
I tried to solo him at level 41... died becose of the bombs...
So now i tried a different tactic: SPEED. i use the Manual Crowd Pummeler during all fight.
So, i start with Tiger's fury, Ravage, Ferie Fire, Claw. Use the Manual Crowd Pummeler... another Claw (crit hit -> 2 combo points), another Claw. Wait for full energy, i use the shield from belt buyed in AB (Hammerfall) to soak up damage, and Ferocios Bite. Shift out... Greater Healing potion, Rejuvenation, Regrowth, Healing Touch. Shift to bear, use again the Manual Crowd Pummeler. Demo Roar, Faerie fire, and Maul to death. that was it. i was surprised... i was still at 2k HP. He was dead...
I get a ring, amd finally i finish the quest for my leather pants...
So yes, it is possible to kill Thermaplugg alone. Use a lot of resoureces, but if a dr00d can do it...

Level 30 Druid (Tauren)
Level 35 Rogue (Undead)
Level 33 Rogue (Troll)
Level 32 Priest (Undead)
Level 35 Mage (Undead)
We actually, looking at this, got really good drops... both the Charged Gear and the Craftman's Monocle Schematic (we had an Engineer in the party, he was happy).

Had a group with a 28 priest, 34 hunter, 32 paladin, 33 rogue, & myself, 32 priest. We get to Thermaplugg, & after we clear the mobs inside the door, the hunter immediatly shoots Thermaplugg & say 'lolo oops'. The door shuts on me, while I'm drinking mana & launches me sideways into the nook to the left of the door. I run back to the door to try to open it, but it's locked, so the rogue comes over & tries to pick it, but his skill is too low. -_- Then, an alarm bot comes from behind & summons some mechanostriders before I can kill it. So, I'm dealing with those, while the other four are killing Thermaplugg. I take down one, somehow, & they beat Thermaplugg when I'm barely alive. I don't get to roll on the Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator that drops that I wanted. I don't get credit for killing Thermaplugg. I don't get any exp. And the stupid strider kills me while I'm running to them, hoping they'll help me the $%&# out. -_- They all say 'good group' & hearth, leaving me to walk back & ress, & feel very, VERY pissed.

I was at 40% health at the end of the fight. All I did was fight him as I walked backwards away from incoming bombs, got hit by a couple but 5 point eviscerates and riposte spam and he was dead really quick, took out the rest of them with ranged attack.

You know I used to have the same attitude that I nevr wanted to run Gnomer again like everyone else. Now that I have been playing for almost a year, and run all of the 60 5 man instances, me and a group of players decided to start new characters and re-run this older low level stuff. As long as everyone playes their class correctly, let the tank pull, hunters ranged dps, priest heal, mages on the tanks target, ect. this instance is easy. We ran last night
27 Priest
31 Warrior
32 Mage
28 Pally
34 Rogue
1 Death, the mage, and I let him (was the Priest) as he wasn't playing his class right at all and was being a mana draing to me. Other than that, I have completely changed my own opinion, and really enjoyed the place. I am going back again to work on getting that ring of from the end as well.

Since nobody seemed to elaborate on the bombs...
There are 6 buttons positioned around the room at regular intervals. Every button is attached to a head that is capable of spewing out walking bombs that home in on you and do an obscene amount of damage when they find you. If a head begins to glow, it will spit out bombs and continue spitting them out until its button is pressed. Best bet is to have 2, preferably 3, people divided among the buttons to keep them all pressed. If a bomb does come out, which isn't highly unlikely, before you can get to the button, it should go for whoever is nearest the button, which should be one of the pushers. Because of this, the button pushers may want to bring bandages, healing potions, or have the party's healer keeping an eye on them. Unfortunately I really can't comment on actually fighting him, since I was one of the button pushers.
Just for anyone interested, we did it with:
37 Hunter (his pet was fighting Thermaplugg, he pushed buttons)
38 Rogue (fought Thermaplugg)
35 Rogue (me, pushed buttons)
32 Paladin (fought Thermaplugg since pushing buttons would have kept him from trying to tank/healing the 38 Rogue)
It was a bit too much damage, but the higher then normal levels definitely made up for the lack of an obvious healer.

I always saw him as tuff when i soloed him with my 60 hunter. This night i triede him as my 42 druid (feral spec) with a 42 rogue pal, i cant remember when its been that easy ever, rogue had around half hp left after fight without getting healede even once and was almost at full hp and around 50% mana left. After the fight we desided 2 reset and try again 2 see if it had just been a freaky luck cause 2 be frank we did not think we could defeat him at all ;p, but we got out with same result. 2morrow we going 2 start farming him until we both gets 2 rings from him we wants. If any rogue/druid teams wanna try it out 2, heres what we did: Rogue mainly runs around closing the vents so not 2 many bombs show up, if he got spare time he can hit therma but dont count on it 2 happen alot. Druid can start out with a quick ravage in the back, follow by a rake and a rip just 2 get his hp going. then switch back throw a rejuven jump into bear, dont use 2 much rage until u very close 2 full, and keep it up there for frenzy healing when u around 1000-1400hp left. at some point u proberly have 2 jump out of bear 2 heal, so bash him and if u got feral charge do that one 2. then jump out regrowth and heal touch uself and chance back 2 bear if his at a point where a quick moonfire spam will do the trick. hope it works ;-)

Man, my sister is so dumb... I (level 45 warrior) told my sister (level 38 hunter) to press the buttons while her pet was attacking/tanking Thermaplugg.
I was doing alright, doing lots of damage and getting Thermaplugg to 50% before he knocked me back. This was my time to heal, so I did. As I planned, Thermaplugg went after my sister's pet.
After I regained about 600-700 hp from bandage, I immediately went to go get my threat level back up from Thermaplugg. Took a few swings, and got my hp down to 1300. At this point he had 20% hp left.
HOWEVER, at 20% my sister decides to go nuke Thermaplugg, so abandoning what I told her... bombs fly everywhere now. At 15%, I have about 1000 hp left, and I noticed her pet died from the bombs. Now I can't really heal again. A few seconds later, he's at 10% and then pow, from 900 hp to less than 100, a few bombs hit me.
Thermaplugg then finally gives me the death blow, then goes after my sister, which SHE DIES TOO from bombs and him also. Got him down to 5% before my sister died. Would of two manned this instance, but she's too cocky to listen to what I say.

After reading all these posts I was uncertain whether I should try soloing as a 60 NE hunter (as Gnomer is notoriously difficult for the lvl), but it was much easier than anticipated. Maybe he got nerfed? My fire resist on the run was only 29, my pet's 0.
Shadowmelded and FDed all the way in only killing two mobs along the way, jumping off ledges to save time. Ran to the back wall of the room, ignored the possibility of bombs, sent the pet in to tank and opened with Aimed Shot. Everytime he got in my face I'd melee, then he'd do a knockback which just allowed me to get the distance to AS him again. The bombs did such little damage that I just looted the body with bombs still active and ran out of the room. Took less than 1/2 hr to complete and I had at least 60% health left when done, no pots needed.

This boss wasn't as hard as the other comments make it seem. You absolutely do have to avoid the bombs, but getting hit by a few won't necessarily wipe you.
My strategy as a prot pally + holy priest + 3 affliction warlocks was to simply kite the boss away from the bombs as lock dots ticked him down. Pally held aggro with Seal of Righteousness. The group stayed stacked and followed tank.
We took a few bombs, but nobody died. Healers can anticipate bombs and throw out HoTs/shield preemptively.
The bombs do AOE damage when they explode. We could have avoided a lot of this by spreading out a bit more (while still staying in range for heals/spells).
The original comments talking about how hard this boss is are from patches prior to all the class revamps in 1.12 which my explain why it was easier for me in 2019 "Classic".
