This is the hardest demon of the hunter epic bow quest, and here is the best strategy i found.
(Strategy from TKA something)
Strengths:
* He does NOT predictably chase you. He frequently stops to fear (disorienting you and causing around 800 damage also) or will stop to shoot homing beetles at you
* The homing beetles basically prevent you from bandaging. They move extremely slow but hit extremely hard
* If you leave melee range (further than 2-3 range or so), he uses an instant cast fear spell that also does 700-800 damage instantly, and he can cast these quickly, almost seemingly chain casting. Shadow protection potions do absorb this damage, however, even with greater potions, he tears through them very fast. It's also likely that the fear will send you into the homing beetles
* Seemingly unlimited mana bar, so Viper Sting is useless
* Scorpid sting has very little/no effect on him
* Melees extremely hard and fast (200+) when in "normal" form (described later)
Weaknesses:
* If you use Wing Clip on him, it immobilizes him completely with "Crippling Clip" for 30 seconds (it must be Rank 3 Wing Clip)
* The homing missiles (creepings) are not fired when you remain in melee range
* He does NOT cast his fear when you remain in melee range
* Must be 'chilled' via Frost Trap prior to fully engaging
Strategy:
The trick to this fight is being able to absorb a fairly high amount of shadow damage, along with keeping his beetles (creepings) eliminated in packs with Volley. Being that Volley has a 60 second cooldown, your movements throughout the fight should be somewhat like an insect rodeo with a large crippled demon for your audience. This is the most difficult and most technical of all the demons.
* Confirmed to work as recently as of patch 1.6, the strategy is as follows. Drink a Greater Shadow Protection Potion, and wait for the timer to cooldown. You will want to apply this effect immediately after his fear damage is no longer being absorbed. If you wait for your health to be low and use a Greater Health Potion, you will be undercutting your damage absorption. Strictly leave the timer open for another Greater Shadow Protection potion. By the time your timer is up, it will be gone. Lay a Frost Trap and use auto shot to engage him and set of the trap. Feign Death and you will see that he no longer has his bright red color. Lay down an Immolation Trap or Explosive Trap and drink up to full mana, you will need it for this fight.

A quick note, in addition to the strategy above, the frost trap to "chill" his is no longer working. Don't waste time and mana while he is up.

Most strategies are out of date for this fight, so here is mine, I did it during the 2.0.1 patch with a Hurricane wielding (crappy) hunter.
I tried it several times buffless, just to see how it would work. I do not see how anybody could do this without buffs or pots at all, it's just not possible. Then I had a warlock and a priest help me out, this shouldn't be a problem for you to find, because if you're in a guild that can get you the ingredients for the quest, you should have some warlocks or priests laying around, it doesn't take long. Pay them if you have to, or you'll be pulling your hair out.
Use the warlock to duel you, and have him put rank 1 curse of recklessness on you, this is a debuff and you can reapply it during the fight. If he forgets, you will get feared and their is a good chance that you will die. The frost trap to remove his enrage still works. Use a 2 handed weapon just so you won't miss your wingclip, and use a rank 3 wingclip. Start shooting him, throw in a serpent sting if mana allows. When he gets remotely near, smash wingclip. If you do it right, he won't even get one hit off. If he does hit you, it will be between 200-400 damage, only one hit usually. Don't use concussive because it could slow him down to the same speed as the bugs, so the next time you go to wingclip him, the bugs will be hitting you as well. That's bad.
Then run away from him in a straight line, placing a rank 2 explosive trap between you and him at the edge of your maximum range. Shoot until the wingclip wears off, the explosive trap keeps applying damage to all bugs like a consecrate, rank 1 isn't enough, and rank 3 is overkill, save your mana. When root wears off, run away from the bugs until he gets close enough, and repeat. It should be him, 25 yards, a explosive trap, 6 more yards, and then you. Bandage early to start the timers, use the trick with the shadow protection potions, I used two. I was horribly geared and I ended the fight with 90% health and only used one bandage. By putting an explosive trap between you and him, you are basically in a 100% safe zone for the duration of the root.
If you cannot do this with a priest and a warlock, get someone else to do it for you, it doesn't mean you're a bad hunter, it's just not a very normal PvE encounter.. Some people say the fear is cheating, I disagree. All of the other fights took skill, but if you had no warlock during this fight, it would be 100% luck on whether you got feared into the bugs or not.
Also, once you start the fight, your friends can wander around and kill mobs in the middle of the fight, just not Solenor or the baby bugs. I did this fight with explosive trap, aspect of the hawk, and serpent sting. I did not use multishot or volley. Due to laying traps in mid combat, I believe explosive trap is the best strategy due to the 30 second duration of his root and the 30 second cooldown of the traps.
Good luck.

The Solenor fight can be the most difficult in the Hunter quest - he has a nasty fear and shadow damage attack, spawns scarabs and is surrounded by a lot of high level creeps. On a PvP server it gets even worse with his patrol path located in a heavily player travelled area.
Greater Shadow Protection Potions are your friend here, the shadow damage is unavoidable regardless of a resisted fear (at least in my experience prior to 2.0.1).
The fight has changed with traps in combat and your best bet is to use explosive trap to deal with the bugs. If mana is an issue then you will want to use a downranked Volley - the new casting time and no need to channel is a nice change.
Solenor is susceptible to Wingclip and wingclipping him will immobilise him for around 30 seconds. During this time use him as a pivot point to round up the scarabs he sends at you so that they are clustered and can be dealt with via explosive trap or Volley.
There are some interesting ways of avoidng the fear and making this fight a near gimme.
Curse of Recklessness from a Warlock will render you immune to fear as well as increase you AP (but lower your armour), because it is technically a debuff and not a buff it will not despawn Solenor when reapplied by that warlock.
Fear Ward only offers protection from one fear though there was a bug a while ago where if fear warded Solenor wouldn't even attempt to try and fear the hunter.
The fear causes shadow damage on strike as well, hence the need for shadow protection of some kind. Solenor can also fear you out of his range and reset himself, happened to me more than a few times.
Chill effect: Solenor needs to be chilled via a frost trap to reduce his melee damage upon you, he can hit quite hard while you move in to wingclip him. This feature has been on again off again working/failing for some time now. Set a Frost Trap and pull him over it, once he activates the trap, feign and reset him. Being that frost trap is bugged atm it may not work....yet again.
The easiest start i found was to set an Explosive Trap and pull Solenor onto it and run in for the wingclip then move to range, the initial Explosive Trap will give you some early control that is paramount to success in this fight.
Shadow protection potions, heavy runecloth bandages, a little luck and learning how to use the immobilised Solenor as a pivot will help you win this fight.

I was with some guys in Silithus doing the hunter quest. I was in mostly pvp and mount buff gear when the Gnome (Nelson the Nice) suddenly went demonic, and 1-hit KOed me for 5715. I had nearly 4k damage (without my shield) so imagine that on a caster.

its only hunters who can kill this guy by kiting him ... running back and forward shooting him !

If he hit you for that much damage that means you hit him, interfering with a hunter's epic quest. that hunter would have probably had to wait 1-4 hours for that demon to respawn, if i were him i'd be VERY pissed.

He is for the hunter epic quest, if you get on his hate list while the hunter is fighting him, then he will depsawn. If you arggo him when the hunter is ooc, you will get wtfpwned. However to the guy who said you kite him and shoot him, not really
You have to wing clip him and shoot him while he is kept in place (wing clip is special against him; it roots him to where he is) and strafe around the beetles he sends

I've seen another exploit involving the hunter quests...Let's say you got your leaf and are trying to kill the demons and w/e. If you group up with another hunter and spawn the demon, the other hunter in your party can kill the demon for you, but you still loot the head and get credit for the kill. As long as the hunter who has the quest quest active spawns the demon another better geared/experienced hunter can kill the demons for them. I've seen it a few times..lame but w/e.

i've heard stuff where wing clip, yes rank 3 one, it doesn't immoblize him and sometimes you can't loot his head.. the demons are the most buggy monsters in the game :/

# Must be 'chilled' via Frost Trap prior to fully engaging (NOTE: As of the 1.11 patch, the 'chilling' of Solenor is not functioning correctly. This is a known bug but there is no ETA on a fix. So while his bright red color is removed, his melee remains high.)

He hits me for 600+ dmg every time when i'm trying to wingclip him. Couse of limited healing, this demon is even harder.

I just did Solenor (god knows i used a warlock). I killed him when I had 60 health left...in fact, his adds killed me afterwards. The saving grace in the battle (as i had no SR gear) was Eazy throw dynamite, the ramp in the south corner of his pat, and GREATER REJUVENATION POTS....unfortunately they are 6 gold a pop for my server.
My gear was dwarf destroyer with the axe from snake boss. a couple zg items, t2 helm, and some pvp gear.
Just hope for good luck!

The most elite guild on our server is Blades of Wrath. They were riding from the west camp in Silithus down to start AQ40. Solenor was spawned from a hunter on his quest and Solenor wiped the ENTIRE Blades raid. I thought it was one of the funniest things I had heard in a really long time.
Of course, there may have been some survivors, but the way it was told to me, they all got one shotted lol.

Before the fight: It definitely helps to have the shadow protection buff from a priest and drink a shadow prot pot (I just used a regular one, costs less than 1g on my server) BEFORE you start - don't want any pots on cooldown while attempting. Also major healing pot's are good for this fight as well (as are any other healing items, like the crystals from Un'goro since they are on a different timer).
As with all the demons, I like to start off by setting a freezing trap and then aimed shot + multi shot. This demon is a tad bit more difficult that the others to trap but definitely managable. Just run STRAIGHT back behind your trap and he'll eventually run into it. He shouldn't have any bugs out yet, but if he does pick them off using regular shots (don't waste mana on multi and don't waste volley since it has a decent cooldown).
While the demon's still frozen, shoot another aimed shot + multi shot. Now is when the fight gets fun! As he's running at you, get him with scatter shot and while he's stunned run by and quickly wing clip him. Once he's wing clipped go ahead and get a few regular shots + multi if you feel you're ok with mana.
They first 2 times I tried this fight I got raped by the bugs while feared. The reason I did well on my 3rd attempt is because I stayed as far away from the bugs as possible. If you have them grouped up pretty well go ahead and cast volley on them to get them out of the way. Once they are gone run in and scatter shot him again followed by a wingclip. Run back out and shoot a few more shots at him. After he fears you he shouldn't fear again for a little bit so as long as the bugs aren't close to you, you should be able to full bandage.
This fight (in my experience) was all about "stick and move". Don't stay still for too long and keep your distance from the bugs.
Don't be afraid to use rapid fire as well if he just got off a fear on you and the bugs aren't out (or are dead). Every bit adds up and the demon will be dead in no time :)
Goodluck!

Here is a startegy that worked for me the first time i tried it (after 3 days and 120g spent on pots):
Before the fight get AT MOST 2 shadow prot potions, 2 elixir of the mongoose and 2 elixir of demonslaying, whoop tubers and/or a healthstone( since they share the same CD)
Buffs: Shadow protection from a priest
Spawn point: Spawn him on the south side of his path, east of the twilight camp and between that camp and AQ gates. You will see a stone ramp that the gnome passes by close to. Spawn him right on the bottom of the ramp.
Fight: you may or may not use a warlock ( i had CoR just for the first 2 mins, but i found it isn't necessary. If you us a warlock have him sduel you on the side of the ramp. Pop your pots and FROST trap him in the middle of the ramp and once he runs through the trap feign death. This will "chill" him down to normal armor/dps. Drink up, mark him, lay an explosive trap and go up the ramp to the top. The most important is to be able to keep him always in the middle of the ramp or the ledge next to the ramp. Start by using an Aimed shot ansd serpent sting and wing clip him in the middle of the ramp. Jump off it and SPAM Aimed shot and multi shot. The bugs cannot jump off the ramp therefore you have plenty of time. Once he runs to youimmobilise him on the ledge on jump on the ramp, it shouldn't be necessary to kill the bugs he spawns at this point so keep spamming your shots. Rince and repeat a a few times and he should be dead with you only having to use a whoop tuber or a healthstone.
Note: the bugs may at some point separate in 2 groups, one going up the ramp the other going down, choose whichever you want and volley them with volley rank 1
This was done in one try after 3 days thinking the bug from 1.11 wasn't fixed..sigh...
Good luck to everyone

Hunter "bug"? Just freakin' run up to him and scatter shot him THEN wingclip..problem solved!
Why do everything mentioned above when you just use your skills like blizzard intended the quest to be done?
Tsk tsk...maybe you shouldn't have your epic staff/bow if you aren't able to do the quest correctly :/
If you'd like to complete the quest and KNOW that you used your skill (rather than exploits), please don't read crap like mentioned above...

I somehow got Nelson the Nice to not transform into a demon, while still being able to attack him and he dropped the head.
I went to talk to him and click the little box that says i know your true identity or whatever and immediately laid down a frost trap and started running away. Then Nelson became hostile but did not transform into a demon. Nelson didn't cast anything on me and didn't summon the bug things, he hit kinda hard maybe 600-800, but the wing clip still stunned him, so i just wing clip then run out so i can range attack. I just repeated this for about a minute or two till he was dead. Then i loot Nelsons corpse and theres Solenor's head lol.
Don't know what the deal with this is but it saved me a lot of aggravation.

This is a level 60 elite demon, one of four you have to kill in the Hunter's epic quest. The mob turns into a demon from a gnome at that location. For details, try the official hunter forums.

I don't know, he must be bugged. He just keeps resetting over and over. Even when I stand really close to the beetles, maybe 20m from Solenor he fears me away and resets. In about 20 tries I was only once in danger of dying, but he just keeps resetting no matter what I do.

So I found this out the hard way, for some reason I did not train wing clip rank 3 at level 60, and quickly learned that wing clip rank 2 (and rank 1) do not root the demon like I was expecting. Make sure you are using wing clip rank 3!

Patch 1.13.3 (Classic)
I wanted to add some comments that I couldn't really find anywhere in case they help someone on this Classic version. There has been a couple of hotfixes lately with the demons. These last 2 demons I did (Simone and Solenor) were a little buggy. They seem to reset at strange times, and other times they don't at all. Well, I 1-shot it with the warlock strat and a tremendous amount of buffs, because I didn't want to have to deal with the bugginess of the resetting (no one in the area). Here are what consumables are on a different timer, and the strat that worked for me.
I used:
风歌夜曲
,
保护卷轴 IV
,
智力卷轴 IV
,
耐力卷轴 IV
,
精神卷轴 IV
,
屠魔药剂
,
猫鼬药剂
(didn't think it would stack with demonslaying but it does),
阿尔萨斯的礼物
,
强效暗影防护药水
,
烤鱿鱼
,
恶魔符文
,
鞭根块茎
,
厚甲蝎药粉
,
简易投掷炸弹 II
,
特效治疗石
,
末日之击
, and had some
瑟银之箭
as backup.
I actually forgot to eat the food, put in the Doomshots (I was using
锯齿箭
in my ammo slot), use the healthstone, and use the dynamite. However, what is interesting and I didn't think about is, when using the demonic rune, the Shadow Protection potion absorbed the demonic rune damage, so I was able to restore mana, then bandage and get back to ~90% health/mana after the first wing clip. This may not be a good thing if your next shadow protection pot isn't up yet.
I talked to Nelson at about 28,87 in front of the ramp at the AQ gate area. I used the Frost Trap method to remove the enrage. Then I had my warlock buddy duel and apply
鲁莽诅咒
on me. I then laid down an
爆炸陷阱
, then used this combo while backing up the ramp:
强化猎人印记
,
强击光环
,
瞄准射击
,
多重射击
,
强化毒蛇钉刺
(Rank 8), and
摔绊
. I ran off the ramp, then wing clipped again, and pelted him with what I had. After immobilizing him again, I then used a Demonic Rune, and bandaged, then realized I forgot to use Rapid Fire and Berserking. I did that, got him with a crit Aimed shot, did a final wing clip and he was dead shortly after.
Supposedly using a demonic rune puts it on the same cooldown as the whipper root tuber, but I did not verify that.
This wasn't designed as a "strat" post, but more for information on what stacks, and what potions work with others.

Just found a pretty insane cheese spot, making the whole fight ridiculously easy (just like the one in burning steppes).
There is a ledge on the southern side of the hive (30.68), close to where the gnome spawns, north of his patrol near the little hill.
You gotta first clear the elites around then spawn him close to the spot. kite him to the ledge then jump down from the lower part, then jump back on and so on... (cheetah required).
Be sure to pull him in a frost trap to cancel his enrage and keep shooting arcane shot rank one on cooldown so he doesn't reset.
the bugs just go around with him so not a issue, just be careful with elite respawns.

Just a note for Engineers: It's possible to use grenades or dynamite to kill the little bugs, but if you place a Goblin Land Mine and Solenor steps on it, it'll count as interference, and he'll despawn with the message "Only a fool would remain in this battle. Farewell, coward."

Solenor
is
possible to kill without jump cheese and without CoR. Quite hard though.
I used the ledge near AQ gates. Did a lot of
Cheetah-Concussive-Scatter kiting
(to about half his HP) before using Wing Clip and entering the fear game. Ended up using Greater Shadow Protection Potion, Major Mana Potion, and Goblin Fishing Pole (carried that around forever lol). Didn't do R1 Volley although that seems reasonable if he's rooted and bugs are stacked.
Removing enrage
seems to be the main trick regardless. Your damage almost doubles thanks to this. I used Frost Trap; unsure if you could just use the more natural Tranquilizing Shot.
