One of the more annoying fights in ZG. Not too difficult. This one, the Horde actually has an advantage in Shaman with poison clensing totems.
With that said, obviously, there's going to be a LOT of poisoning going around. So keep your druids and shaman/paladins on their toes.
And that's the easy part. Here's the hard one...
She will switch between spider and humanoid form pretty much at will. In her human form, she will cast a life drain on people that needs to be inturrupted.
When she switches to spider form, she spits an AOE root on everyone near her - ie., the tanks. :( This sheds their agro and she'll charge into the casters and, specifically, the healers.
The way around this is to either a.) Have a VERY fast feral tank on the ball, or b.) Have a second tank at the caster pit twiddling his thumbs. When the root happens, he taunts and pulls her back to the main tank, who then takes her from him.
All the while during this fight, periodic spiders spawn and charge you. There are only a few of them, but over time, they grow and get really strong, so they need to be killed immediately.
If you can deal with all of that, then you've got the fight beat.
The way I ran it was with a three tank rotation.
One main tank gets aggro, then two tanks go in and start pounding on her with sunders etc. After about 10-15 seconds, they backed out to the caster zone, and she would go over to them when she switched form and performed her AOEs.
The key to having the extra two tanks was in case one taunt got resisted. After we got this down, the rest of the fight was pretty easy.
P.S. She always casts Life Drain almost immediately after coming out of spider form, so If you're a priest, start spamming the decursive key and you can avoid any problems.
P.S.S. She usually does two waves of spits before switching back, however it still may be random.
If you're having a hard time, here's a nice alternative.
1 tank is focused on Mar'li. Everyone (including rogues and other warriors) stay at max (~30 yard) range and use ranged dps. Whenever a spawn comes, rogues and warriors kill it while the rest of the raid focuses on Mar'li.
When Mar'li roots the MT, one of the tanks can easily grab her and bring her back, plus you have backup if taunt is resisted.
This tactic takes more time, but less people get poisoned (due to distance) and you have an easier time handling adds. Consider it the "cautious" approach. Also, clear the entire spider area before pulling to avoid pulling an entire spider pack in the middle of the fight...
Something that my guild has found helpful whenever she does her webbing in spider form. When she runs towards the caster group, the warrior that picks her up then becomes the new MT. The warrior that got webbed runs down to the previous warrior's position. This is repeated everytime that she webs. This way, you only have the warrior's changing places.
Also, on the spawns, having hunters assigned to the spawns seems to drop them pretty fast. Rogues usually help with the first batch of spawns then start dps after that.
We have also found it helpful to assign a kick rotation for rogues to interrupt her healing.
Does anyone have any strategies for beating her?
The keys to this fight...
Mana burn, mana drain and viper sting her. The faster she runs outta mana the easier it is to fight her. When the spiders come out, it is important to kill them first, Melee should be on spiders ASAP. Also she will heal herself if anyone in the raid dies, so it is important to let as little people as possible to die. If you do happen to die early on in the fight, you can always graveyard zerg her before she dies. This is also a mana intensive fight so priests shouldn't do too many mana burns (2-3). Major mana pots also help
My guild and our alliance tried this out. Got the two first bosses in first try, but this @#$%^ won't go down >.<
We have two tanks, so that when she changes form and snares the tank, the other tank takes over. However, the poison in conjunction with the adds seems to be too much for us to handle, 5x% was our record after 4 attempts. =(
Hi, for the poster above, we took her down yesterday. The thing is that when she is in caster form, you have to keep draining her mana out(we used warlocks and hunters). Then the MT stands a bit away from her, like 10m from the rest of the group, and the rest of you guys stay tight together, so it's easier to aoe adds. Then the offtanks takes the aggro while the MT is netted, when he is released, he takes the aggro back and so it goes on.
Took her down yesterday, Twilight's hammer - Horde.
you can run away from her so you get ooc
She will cast a spell on a party member in her human form that will drain life from the target. The trick is to dispel magic on her target. Also, the "ping pong" strategy with two tanks works great. Have all healers stand with the second tank, when the first one gets webbed, agro is erased. She will then run to you healers/ranged dps. At this point, next tank taunts, and everyone runs to the webbed tank. repeat. Good Luck, she has some sick drops. (Including a cloth robe that is on par with the rare drop from MC that adds spell damage and chance to hit with spells)
Go here :)
you do not need to drain mana or viper sting or any of that. it does not help. All of her "spells" are abilities. Just focus on using kick etc to break it once you see the green bar.
The other big tip for this encounter is having two tanks, one to grab aggro when one is webbed and the other will grab it back when the first one gets webbed. helps keep dps and healers from getting one shotted as the web removes aggro from the tank.
also keep your dps out of range of her Poison AE, it deals a great amount of damage, and definitely have shamans place poison cleanse.
pls, who farms this boss give us an advice what composition of classes in raid is required for this boss
we've done him only ( 35%HP ) with this group:
we tryed to kil him with 4 different tactcics
the best was that we was in 2 groups:
1 malee attack group ( MT, rogues, 1x shammy ( nature resist totem)
2. casters group with offtank
btw we're farming venoxis, jeklik and bloodlord ^^
Its pretty easy, if u know what to do. The tactic with two tanks was explained further.
All u have to do is standing out of range of her poison attack. That spell #$%^in hurts, but if u all go with ur max range only few people will be hurt.
Our team (we are farming her alot^^):
GL hf, if u kicked her ass once, ull kick her ass evrytime :)
oh i forgot to say that we used our rogues just for killing the adds, while our palas just decursed
Be careful walking near the voodoo pile in her room, it triggers a rush of spiders 30 seconds later.
What if both tanks get webbed? Does she only web targets in front of her?
she's not hard, she's just tricky to control
what you're going to need is 2 tanks that are on the same page.
1 tank stands back while the other tank "tanks" her. when he gets webbed, the standby tank IMMEDIATELY grabs aggro and either the 2 tanks switch places or he/she brings it back to the MT
from the one kill i was apart of, she goes down fairly fast because the raid is so focused on keeping aggro on the tanks that you arent paying attention to her health
the fight lasts about 5-6 minutes unless you're raid is decked out with epic gear and weapons then of course it will go faster :)
We killed her yesterday, at last! And she dropped the epic robes. :)
We have tried several times, but always wiped at around 20%. This time it went easy, and we got her on the first try, with no wipe at all.
We have killed the speaker first and the first wave of spiders, then reset.
After it, the tactics with 2 MTs and switching places worked very well, she only attacked those who forgot to run to the other MT at shapechange.
Casters should have some mana pots with them, you can use 2-3 of them in the fight, since their cooldown is only 2 mins.
We have drained her mana, but I don't think it is neccessary.
The poison is nasty, have your shammys put a new cleansing totem each time she poisons.
Have a 3rd warrior to tank the adds - it worked for us, no caster died by them - and when adds spawn, dps should leave the boss and focus on them, coz they have to be killed very fast, else they become elite and hit hard.
We always had our rogue on boss to kick her, MT shield bashed and shammys earth shocked, but she could heal 30k HP once, because we haven't dispelled her life drain. So be careful with it.
It is true that if you kill her once, you will kill her every time!
Good luck with her!
Every boss in ZG except Jin'do the Hexxer is easily killable without mana draining. Do not bother, it's not worth it. Like a poster above somewhere said, it's better to just have those you would have mana draining and have them dps.
Here's how to do spider boss:
xx OT r BOSS MT
x = ranged / healers
OT = tank # 2
MT = tank # 1
r = rogues
At first, OT tanks Speaker, MT tanks Mar'li. Rest of raid kills initial wave of spiders.
MT tanks boss at about 25-30 yards away from main raid so that only rogues and MT get aoe poisoned. When she webs, rogues + MT lose aggro and get webbed. Boss runs to OT, OT gets aggro, becomes the new tank, brings Mar'li to where the original MT was tanking her. When the original MT gets unwebbed, he runs to where the original OT stood, out of range of her web ability and waits his/her turn until Mar'li webs the OT and has to be the new tank again.
Easy fight, only hard part is the initial pull with the spiders and the speaker, after that, should be cake. Just have the mages/rogues ready to counterspell/kick when she tries to heal.
My guild on Earthen Ring (Crusaders Of The Lost) and our sister guild in a raid alliance (Pirates Never Die) have dropped her two weeks in a row without a death in the party.
The key to this...is the two tank theory.
Our two guilds main tanks (Myself and Brimran) are interchangeable when it comes to tanking bosses and this boss is no different. usually we start off With Brimran on her and whatever third tanking person we have (tonight it happened to be a pally) tank the speaker.
I stand back by the healers shooting ranged and watching for the web.
Upon seeing the web I immediately taunt (because I am a bit ahead of the group) while our leader is giving the "DPS down" command on ventrilo. Once I feel I have grabbed the aggro, we call for DPS to pick back up and Brimran moves into my old position between the group of healers and myself.
Many times Brim and I won't even do anything other than watch for that web. Timing can be crucial.
So I will definitely vouch for the "ping pong" strategy. In fact out of our last 4 runs. the only time we've had problems or wipes has been when she has resisted a taunt and taken out a few healers or DPS people.
The above strats lay out the best way to down spider, but if you find yourself with only one tank(it happened to us lol) she is still doable.
Have your hunters stand next to her alter, looks like a gong, and after the initial pull they will start the ranged dps to get them higher on the hate list than the casters and healers. Move the MT a bit closer to the healer caster group and when the MT is webbed and the spider charges the hunters, wait until she is apon you and FD after you take one hit. By that time the MT should be free, Pallies bless freedom on MT and if your horde there is a potion that can be made at exhaulted with Zandalar, possible to use your pvp trinket also (not a 100% sure).
Pallies can cast Blessing of Freedom on their assigned tank to help with the web problem
Being webbed is only a temporary aggro dump, similar to a mob gouging you. If the maintank is freed via Blessing of Freedom before anyone else has gathered threat, she immediately runs back.
Her web ability seems to be on about a 20 second timer. She would web melee, it would take me a moment to realize & Freedom the tank, and the next time she did it my blessing wouldn't quite be recharged. If you can anticipate it a little, you can just keep blessing the tank, which will make them immune to the web.
Also, the web prevents the casting of certain spells. I could not heal, but I could bless with freedom.
I don't know what the Horde equivalent to this tactic would be, if any. Congratulations on getting Blood Elves.
The key is to get the spawns down as fast as you can. The faster you kill the spawns the less they give = the less mana you have to use on healing.
Fighting Mar'li will take a lot of time, as all ZG bosses does.
The main problem with Mar'li is that she webs the MT = MT poses no threat to her. Then she charges another ppl.
- Here you need another warrior to taunt her and bring her back to the MT. It VERY important MT Has agro before give any damage to Mar'li again.
Second Every shapeshift renews her agro list = after a shapshift you do not give damage before MT has agro again.
My opinion is that you use a lot of ranged damage on her. (Mages and warlocks prefered)How ever dont use damage over time.
Rogues are good for taking care of the spawns - they should use stun as much as possible.
- In other words have a spawn killer team.
Most improtant of all to preper for ZG by buying/making potions and elixirs.
AE: Mana potions, so healers dont run out of mana.
We are a new professional raid group on Earthen Ring server, run by myself on the side to the Lunar Tiger Knights, this is how the Topless Raiders have managed it:)
we've got her down to 2% before with just 18 people, would of killed her but she life leeched at 2% back up to 12% after we missed interrupting it lol, havent gone back and tried it with 18. Hope this helps, she is one of the hardest to get right for your group tactics wise. dont give up!
Hard mob, first try 9% (again...), second try 1% (again...) and third try we got the @#$%^.
I guess we all spent around 20g rep coasts so far for this run but one of our mages said thanks for Mar'li's Touch ;)
By the way: Kill the spawns FAST!
My guild has been using a manadrain/burn strat. Kill the adds, then have your warlocks drain mana and priests manaburn her. She will still shift into a spider but she will not be able to lifesteal without mana. Viper stings keep her from regaining it. She only has 13k mana so you can drain it in about 15 seconds.
We also use a split group setup. We have a main tank and melee near where she spawns, and an offtank in a separate group with the casters about 25 yards back, near the big rock. When she's in spider mode and she nets the tank, she will run toward the mana users; just have the offtank taunt her when she gets there. Ping pong her between the two groups. Be sure to switch DPS to spider adds she summons during the fight.
She dropped Flowing Ritual Robes for us last night. My guildies let me take it even though I rolled a 1! =)

We start off with a hunter pulling the speaker towards the ramp. Mar'li will reset and we deal with the spiders + the speaker. Then we move up to her and it's basically a tank & spank fight. Make sure the healers + ranged dps are grouped around the OT, as he will taunt her back to the MT when the MT is webbed. Keep on doing that untill she dies.
Just make sure you dispell the one who's being life leeched and let the ranged DPS deal with the incoming spiders adds.
Remember all you druids, you can shapeshift out of the webs!
This is how we do it
We have no epic equiped ppl, though we kill her with no casualties (btw druids, better dont get webed at all ;-) )
I was at this party and i was like "Mar'li! You want some of this?" She finally responded, "I'm trying to avoid you damn it!" And I responded "I can help you fill that void." I was drunk...and she turned into a giant spider and tried to eat me.
We tried about 8 times and never got her below 36%. I think it might've been a lack of DPS. Also, whenever she turned spider form, she just raped the casters. We tried all different tactics, even everyone going melee so she couldn't web the tanks and charge the casters...
We'll research it tomorrow and try again tomorrow night. Damn hard. Don't see how you guys did it on your second and third attempt...
i had a great and weird PUG... we downed bat 2nd try, snake 1st try, and bat 3rd try.......with a feral druid tanking...
any good strats?
Got him down on our second attempt, was fairly easy encounter, just keep your dispel on posion up, and get his spawns down and their wont be any problem.
Mar'li's touch dropped for us aswell.
She dropped Flowing Ritual Robes for us last night aswell so i got it for my paladin :) No-one lese wanted it...
How do you prevent the tanks from getting webbed and the spider form raping the casters?
you do not need to fight against both MAr'li and speaker
clear all square near Mar'li
then all raid moving to entrance of Mar'li's square
hunter going to pull speakerand move to raid
Mar'li will go back and speaker can be killed easily
after this tric kyou can go and fight boss without this minion
Took her down yesterday, really hard boss, and not exactly a optimal group.
Start of the fight we AOE'd the spiders and started draining mana.
One warrior had the duty of taunting the single spider adds.
When she transormed all except the tank stopped dps, and the rest of the group ganged up with the rest of the warriors who taunted her when the aggro shifted.
Rince and repeat until about 25-10% when she spawns another group of spiders which the mages/locks have to AOE down, FAST!
We had about 1/2 the raid left alive when she finally died.
Important thing is to keep distance so that as few people as possible get poison, and for those that get it, poisoncleansetotem and remove poison needs to be out ASAP.
Also warriors really need to be quick about getting aggro from her and all that can have to interrupt her lifesteal, warlocks with felhunter worked wery well for us.
Dropped Bloodstained Greaves and Primal Hakkari Girdle
We killed her today on the 3rd try (18% 10% 0%) On the 3rd try only the offtank died all others was fine up.
Dropped for my warrior the Talisman of Protection ;-) (Nearly good as Steadfast Might but for less trouble :D)
Just a tip for alliance:
When the MT is webbed, have a paladin hit him with Blessing of Freedom, it neutralizes it.
Take out the spiders as they come, cleanse all the poisons, and counterspell/kick her life drain, and she will go down.
