WoW Classic with Creators Episode 3: Jeff Kaplan
Blizzard has released another episode of their WoW Classic with Creator's series. This one features Jeff Kaplan, one of the original Game Designers from vanilla WoW who helped design many dungeons.
Here are some video highlights:
Jeff Kaplan considers his legacy the
Quest line, which requires the player to collect various pages of a book, written by Hemet Nesingwary (based on Ernest Hemingway, of which Jeff Kaplan is a fan). Jeff's idea was to make this big elaborate quest that required players to collect and trade pages to complete the quest chain, but he claims all he did was annoy everybody.
Before the team was able to input the spawn locations for various monsters in the Deadmines, Jeff Kaplan spent a weekend manually adding Monsters to the map, based on where he thought would be a good location for the monsters, as well as their paroling locations and routes. He then screenshot the entire map, from a top down perspective and shared it with the design team. Eventually, Jeff Kaplan was a key part in designing dungeons and this would be one of his proudest memories as a member of the Vanilla WoW team.
Playing Classic World of Warcraft today, Jeff Kaplan feels both nostalgic for when he played for it, but also for when he designed the game.
