Three Hour Playtime Penalty for Chinese Players Showing up on the Shadowlands Beta

A curious debuff appeared for some players on the Shadowlands Beta today, warning them that they would receive halved money and experience rewards after having been online for more than three hours, urging them to take a break from the game. While NA and EU players may be alarmed at this, Chinese players might find it familiar, as it's one of the infamous restrictions
mandated by the government for underage players
.
Why the warning is showing up on beta servers is anyone's guess, but it is almost certainly
not meant for everyone
, as the rest of the world has no such restrictions, and simply appeared as the result of a bug. Blizzard has shown absolutely no indication of extending these restrictions to the rest of the world (and would have no reason to regardless), so it shouldn't be anything to be alarmed at, but it is a reminder of the tribulations players in other parts of the world are forced to deal with in order to play the game.
Keep in mind that this is not new to Shadowlands
, as these restrictions have been in place for
Chinese players since 2005
, and is simply showing up on the Shadowlands Beta for others as the result of a bug. For those curious, there are also a few
global strings
related to the restrictions.
You have more than 5 hours of online time. You will not be able to gain loot, XP, or complete quests. Your rest state will reset in %d hours of offline time. Please log out to get rest and exercise.
