Lore Spotlight: Where is Nathanos Blightcaller?
With the launch of Patch 9.1, the first three chapters of the Chains of Domination storyline became available. We explore some of the lore referenced in this storyline, about Nathanos Blightcaller and Sylvanas.
Warning: Spoilers for this week's Chains of Domination quests if you have not yet completed them.
Chapter 1 - Battle of Ardenweald
includes a cinematic of a fight between Tyrande Whisperwind and Sylvanas Windrunner. At one point, Tyrande taunts Sylvanas with the fact that she killed Nathanos Blightcaller. Instead of responding in anger, Sylvanas seems taken aback, genuinely surprised at the news. It seems, as Tyrande quickly points out, that the Jailer has been lying to her.
Tyrande Whisperwind: I will take your head, Banshee! Just like I took his.
Sylvanas Windrunner: ... Nathanos?
Tyrande Whisperwind: You didn't know? Your master is keeping secrets from you.
The Last Time Sylvanas Saw Nathanos
The last conversation between Sylvanas and Nathanos happened moments after she shattered the Helm of Domination, opening the way into the Shadowlands. As she stood on the edge of the realm of death, Nathanos arrived, admitting he had failed in the task that she had given him: To kill Bwonsamdi. Sylvanas was not pleased, and her final words to her champion were cold.
From the pre-expansion novel
by Madeleine Roux,
Sylvanas slid her gaze from his blubbering lips to the tower looming above. His failure would complicate things considerably, and soured the triumph that had a moment ago felt so complete.
“Must I tell you to go?”
Nathanos swallowed hard, crushing the vial in his hand, a crunch like bone. The shimmering dust slid between his fingers like sand. “I will return to the Marris Stead, my lady, and await your orders.”
She heard the note of hope in his voice, fragile as a fledgling dropped from the nest.
“Go where you will, Nathanos, but do not be idle. The loa knows the Shadowlands well, I expect you will return to me with means to prevent his meddling.” Sylvanas flicked her fingers, as if ridding herself of a speck of muck. “My path lies ahead.”
As Sylvanas entered the Shadowlands, Nathanos made good on his word, returning to his homestead, Marris Stead, just as he said he would. We know this, because we would go on to face him there, in-game, ourselves.
The Last Time We Saw Nathanos
During the Shadowlands Pre-launch event, members of both the
were sent to the Eastern Plaguelands to face Nathanos.
During the fight, Tyrande showed up, strengthened by the power and rage of the Night Warrior. She did, indeed, cut Nathanos's head off, but not before he claimed that killing him would only send him to Sylvanas's side in the Shadowlands.
Nathanos Blightcaller: Go on. Kill me. You'll send me right to my lady. Beyond the veil she shattered.

Despite this claim, it seems Nathanos was mistaken, as there's been no sign of him in the Shadowlands since we've arrived. Up until now, it's been easy to assume this has had something to do with Sylvanas's coldness towards him the last time she saw him, but now it seems she didn't even know he was dead.
Nathanos has proven time and time again that he would do anything for Sylvanas. A skilled ranger lord, unfettered by any sense of responsibility, he could have been a valuable asset to her and the Jailer, so why keep him a secret? Why hide him away?
The evidence that Sylvanas is trapped in an abusive, manipulative relationship with the Jailer is stacking up. In
, we saw the first hints that the Jailer is not quite the person she seems to believe, but also that she's learned how to internalize his words and repeat them as her own. In
Folks & Fairy Tales of Azeroth
, it's suggested that the Jailer may have had a sliver of Sylvanas's soul - and thus an element of control over her - since her first death.

Hopefully, we'll find out more soon. Patch 9.1 is only just beginning. Next week, the Sanctum of Domination raid opens up, along with our opportunity to finally take down Sylvanas - in a fight that has been described as "fateful".
