How Important is Nature Resistance Gear in Classic Temple of Ahn'Qiraj?

In the last few days, Guilds from China, North America, and Europe have cleared Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. In that time, the conversation around Nature Resist gear has gone from "it's not that big of a deal" to "Oh no, we should have prepared Nature Resist gear". We'll take a look at what went right and what went very wrong for some guilds during the first week of AQ40!
Thoughts going into Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
Before the release of AQ40, the community has been theorizing whether Nature Resist gear is necessary for Princess Huhuran. Leading up to the release, many players settled on the idea that it isn't needed if your raid has enough
战士
s that can use
鲁莽
and zerg the boss down. On the other hand, raiders in non-melee stacked groups or ones where they didn't have multiple Rank 14 melee went with a safer approach, having their melee prepare Nature Resist gear sets to try and reach 150-200 Nature Resist, unbuffed by a
猎人
's
野性守护
. With enough Nature Resist, the amount of damage a player will receive from Poison Bolt will be drastically reduced, making the boss encounters a much easier fight on the healers in the group.
ONSLAUGHT, Princess Huhuran, & Viscidus
ONSLAUGHT was one of the most vocal groups when it came to the "we don't need Nature Resist" camp, where players even flaunted the fact they didn't have to farm Nature Resist gear (which can be extremely pricey on large realms). Leading up to the pull on Princess Huhuran, raiders in ONSLAUGHT had around 0 Nature Resist, and they only brought 2
猎人
s, meaning only 8 players in the raid had Aspect of the Wild. The raid did bring plenty of Greater Nature Protection Potions, which will absorb a fair bit of damage from Poison Bolt, but the raid did use Recklessness on all Warriors to bring the boss down. Here's a clip of the kill:
But not long after this clip, ONSLAUGHT would go on to wipe on Viscidus...
three times
. The reality is, ONSLAUGHT just wasn't that prepared well enough. They had been preparing for NA first C'thun,
which they did achieve
, but by the time they pulled Viscidus, there was certainly some questions on how clean the kill was going to be. For instance, they had completely passed on gathering Nature Resist gear, because they were confident they could zerg Princess Huhuran down with
鲁莽
and Rank 14 Weapons. While that worked for Huhuran, you can't really Reck on Viscidus, because of the boss mechanics. You need Frost damage weapons to shatter the boss quickly, and some melee in ONSLAUGHT didn't have two Frost damage weapons, only equipping one... or none, in one player's case. On top of that, they were running dangerously low on consumables, lack of
强效自然防护药水
,
抗毒药剂
, and some were close to running out of
冰霜之油
! To make matters worse,
Viscidus was bugged at the time
, not receiving frost damage from frost wands (
This issue has since been fixed
). Either way, this "fiasco" made for an entertaining stream, showing that even the best guilds in the world can still be caught off guard!

Princess Huhuran, Hunter Pets, Barov Peasant Caller?
There has been a lot of confusion in the community about how Hunter Pets and Summoned Pets (like
巴罗夫管家铃
,
上古角石魔典
,
侏儒作战小鸡
, or
奥金机械幼龙
) work on Princess Huhuran's abilities. To set the record straight,
毒性之箭
will only target the 15 nearest players
, ignoring all pets and summoned pets. But why would you still want to bring
巴罗夫管家铃
to Princess Huhuran? To absorb any potential Wyvern Sting, of course! While you won't be able to "cheese" Poison Bolt Volley, you can still do your best to "cheese"
翼龙钉刺
, taking a small chance that Princess Huhuran will target a summoned pet, which will immune the debuff all together.

The reason it is valuable to try and get a Wyvern Sting to hit a Hunter's Pet or a summoned pet, is because it is a nasty 12 second sleep, meaning 12 seconds of no damage from that player. Because there is a chance it targets a pet instead, you should try and summon as many things as possible, to increase your raid's chance of avoiding Wyvern Stings! But at the end of the day, you can't cheese the Poison Bolt Volley and it will do a ton of damage to the raid when Princess Huhuran gets down to 30% and permanelty
狂暴
, casting Poison Bolt Volley every few seconds. If the raid can prepare enough Nature Resist gear, they should absolutely consider doing it!

Elixir of Poison Resistance & Greater Nature Protection Potion
Surprisingly, Viscidus has been the most dangerous boss in Temple of Ahn'Qiraj thus far. Just take a look at the number of deaths in some of the best guilds in the world,
Fusion had 40 deaths
to Poison Bolt Volley,
ONSLAUGHT had 82
,
gusy had 22
, and
Calamity had 34
. While I do agree the frost wand bug can play a part in this, that is an extremely large number of deaths, to a relatively simple fight in comparison to C'thun and Princess Huhuran. Some of the issues might even stem from the raid composition going into the release of Ahn'Qiraj. Because these raids were competing for world first, they might have stacked a bit more melee heavy to burn through the raid as quickly as possible, passing up extra
圣骑士
(that bring the very valuable
清洁术
) and a second
德鲁伊
, opting for more Rank 14
战士
s.
If you're not competing for region first C'thun kill and going with a more balanced raid composition,
which Wowhead has a guide on
, it is highly recommended you still bring important consumables such as
抗毒药剂
and
强效自然防护药水
, as these are extremely vital for keeping your raid alive during difficult encounters.
Why Nature Resist gear might be necessary for your raid
The above raids are some of the best raid groups in the world, fielding multiple Rank 14
战士
s and
潜行者
s, and even they struggled on Princess Huhuran and Viscidus. For most raid groups, Nature Resist gear will likely be a necessity for getting through these bosses, at least for the first month or two of clearing AQ40. Nature Resist both gives players the chance to fully resist Poison Bolt Volleys, and can reduce the amount of damage received from the debuff. This can give a raid group plenty of extra time to down the boss, as healers will be less pressured into healing the raid group instead of the main tank. At the end of the day, if you can prepare your character with a set of Nature Resist gear before AQ40's release on your server, you absolutely should. Because it's better to be safe than sorry!
