Conversation Between Tal-Galan and Ve'nari - Possible Hints at Future Shadowlands Zone
A conversation between Tal-Galan and Ve'nari which occurs after the events of the final chapter of 9.1's storyline may have some clues about where we will be headed in a future patch.
Warning, spoilers from this week's questline ahead.
In the final chapter of Chains of Domination, patch 9.1's main storyline, our leaders, spearheaded by the Primus, make plans to follow the Jailer, to stop him from reaching the Sepulcher of the First Ones and using the knowledge within to reorder the universe.
What is the Sepulcher of the First Ones? Everything We Know About The Jailer's Destination
To accomplish this, the Primus will need to forge a special key using each of the four new Covenant sigils - which we have helped reforge during the last few chapters. He will also need something to replace the Arbiter's sigil,
which has been confirmed to have once belonged to the Jailer
, and which was repossed by the Jailer at the end of the Sanctum of Domination raid.
Chapter 9 - What Happens Next
, players have an opportunity to hang back in Korthia and speak to various important characters. Approaching Tal-Galan will initiate a conversation between him and Ve'nari. During this conversation, Tal-Galan mentions "Zereth Mortis" as the "realm of the First Ones". As we can assume the Sepulcher of the First Ones is within their realm, and that that's where we're headed in 9.2, it's logical to conclude that Zereth Mortis will be the name of the zone we spend most of our time in during 9.2.
Ve'nari says: Greetings, my friend.
Tal-Galan says: Friend? The elusive Ve'nari has no friends.
Ve'nari says: I have been woefully misrepresented! I can be a good friend, a useful friend, to those in need. And everyone is in need of something.
Tal-Galan says: You more than most, from what I hear. In fact, I imagine this conversation is merely a pretext for you to inquire what I know of Zereth Mortis.
Ve'nari says: Do you not long to see the realm of the First Ones for yourself?
Tal-Galan says: One day, perhaps. If the Purpose wills it.
Ve'nari says: Were you not assigned to Korthia for your intellect? Your curiosity? Perhaps your "purpose", my friend, is not to hoard knowledge, but to share it with those who would put it to use.
Tal-Galan says: I admit there are so many theories to explore... so many discoveries to be made... No! I will not think of it. Begone, broker! I need nothing from you.
Ve'nari says: Not today, perhaps. But one day you will. And when that time comes, I look forward to doing business.
The word "zereth" means 'cornerstone' or 'keystone' - the exact definition is
actually mentioned in the introductory notes found in the Grimoire of the Shadowlands and Beyond
as one that's caused debate among the Brokers.
I can say with confidence that you, Overseer, must have been as intriduged as I by the promising intial reports delivered by Al'firim on his journey to locate the Sepulcher of the First Ones. The fact that he decoded any of the glyphs at all was more progress than has been made in many ages of study (though whether "zereth" is best translated as "keystone" or "cornerstone" remains a subtle, yet ongoing, debate)
"Mortis" is the Latin word for death, and seems to have similar if not the same connotations when it's
in World of Warcraft before. However, it's interesting to note that the mortal use of the word "death" is very different to the way it's used in the Shadowlands - so much so it's almost offensive.
Of secondary concern is the difference in nomenclature that exists between our kind and the mortals. While we, of course, know Death to be the eternal force of magic woven throughout the very fabric of the Shadowlands and beyond, mortals have an entirely different—and shockingly obtuse—interpretation. They use the word "death" to signify the end of their existence within the mortal plane. My apologies, Overseer, if you find that revelation to be as distasteful as I do. But I fear that to accurately convey information on mortal perceptions, I must, from time to time, include observations from their own flawed perspective.
Theories that have appeared on both
the official forums
point out the similarities between the words "Zereth" and "Azeroth" - along with the possibility that "Azeroth" really means "A Zereth". This might hint that Azeroth herself will have a role to play in the upcoming patch. It might indicate that Azeroth, like Zereth Mortis, is a realm that is also a "keystone" or "cornerstone", though perhaps one associated with something different than "Mortis". Or it might just be a coincidence.
It is true that Azeroth seems uniquely important in the universe that it's set in. In Tazavesh, the Veiled Market, patch 9.1's megadungeon, we follow the Broker So'leah as she attempts to assemble and wield an artifact of the First Ones. Interestingly, So'leah gathers pieces of this artifact from Azeroth, leaving some to wonder why artifacts belonging to the First Ones would even on our world.
