This Guide was made to give you an overview of how each Class and Specialization can perform in Arena Season 1 of Burning Crusade Classic. This Tier List was made for players who prefer to choose their class based on its usefulness in arena, based on damage burst cooldowns, defensive ability, crowd control, and general utility.
This Guide will rank Class and specializations by a tier list format, ranking them on a scale from best (S Tier) to unviable (F Tier) based on the criteria of damage, utility and defensive value in Arena Season 1 of Burning Crusade Classic.

For this Tier List, here is how we're ranking each DPS spec in Phase 1 of Burning Crusade Classic:
: You are valuable on multiple team compositions in Arena Season 1, bringing high burst damage, exceptional crowd control and universal utility.
: You excel on multiple team compositions in Arena Season 1, but have some weaknesses regarding defensive cooldowns, crowd control, or utility.
: You are a solid choice in in Arena Season 1. You may have only have a few viable team compositions, to make up for your lack of defensives, crowd control, or utility.
: You are somewhat viable in Arena Season 1, but suffer from many weaknesses in your damage, crowd control, or utility. Likely won't have many viable team compositions.

DPS Rankings and Explanations for Arena Season 1 of Burning Crusade Classic
S Tier Specs
Subtlety Rogues are exceptional in PvP arenas. They have powerful damage output, interrupts, defensive abilities, and crowd control which is nearly everything you can ask for in an arena class. Many of a rogue's strengths come from abilities with long cooldowns - if you use them needlessly, you can be caught without them when you need them the most. If you use them at the proper times, you will excel and enemies will be endlessly frustrated as you seemingly always have your
ready - but really you just save them for when you need them. It will take careful judgment to know when the best time to use each ability is. Rogues played well are absolutely a top tier class in PvP arenas and are very desirable inclusions in arena teams.
TBC Classic Rogue DPS Arena Guide
Warlocks bring great Crowd Control and Multi-Target damage to any arena group composition. Destruction-based specs, however, will have a harder time in the arena because they lack a lot of sustain that Affliction provides and although bursty their multi-target damage is lacking.
are all forms of Fear / Horror effects that scatter the target in a random direction.
is another great form of Crowd Control to keep the player out of the fight. This however is only really used by Destruction Warlocks.
Warlocks have really strong multi-target DPS thanks to DoTs. In total there are up to 5 DoTs available to the warlock PER target (
(Affliction)). This damage over time quickly stacks up and significantly drains on the Healers' ability to keep everyone topped and not run out of mana.
TBC Classic Warlock DPS Arena Guide
Mages excel in arena. Their combo of control, utility, survivability, and damage is practically unmatched and as such a Mage is a top pick for players looking to play arenas. Mages are especially strong in 2v2 and 3v3 arena matches and some of the best compositions possible (like Rogue, Mage or Rogue, Mage, Priest) feature a Mage.
As a Mage you can counter just about everything thrown at you, be it burst with
, tough spells with Counterspell, melee attackers with Frost Nova and Frostbolt slows, or even just purely shutdown a target with an unanswerable Polymorph.
Thanks to things like
, you're also able to quickly pull out a ton of damage, combining it with a
, or even other instant cast spells. Overall, Mages are practically an entire package and other than no healing have few weaknesses.
TBC Classic Mage DPS Arena Guide
A Tier Specs
Early on in Burning Crusade Classic, Warriors won't really be the top tier PvP Class, but aren't far behind. After crafting a weapon like
, or later
, a Warrior's Viability and value in PvP is significantly higher. The stun effect from these weapons happen frequently, alongside the
talent. All of these stun effects work wonders for a class that has a lack of direct stun abilities, such as a
If supported properly in Arenas, Warriors can be one of the most dominating classes in the game. But for that to truly happen, it might take a few seasons before the proper gear is released. Eventually by Season 3, Arena gear will have passive Armor Penetration on it and many off pieces from PvE content will offer this extremely valuable stat. Once that transition happens, Warriors will become a massive juggernaut in Arenas.
TBC Classic Warrior DPS Arena Guide
Hunters in PvP are straight damage dealers. There is a very high skill ceiling in PvP for Hunters and all three specializations are "viable" but play completely different to each other and none are considered top tier among the other classes. Early on in PvP seasons Hunters are known for playing more burst style gameplay while resilience levels of the opponent are still relatively low.
Statistically speaking, Hunters are the worst arena class from original TBC. One of the major differences this time around though with TBC Classic is that we will be playing on the final patch of the expansion which brings quite a few massive changes.
will provide a Mortal Strike effect reducing healing down to that target by 50% for 8 seconds.
dispels 1 Magic effect and now scales with Attack Power opposed to the early TBC days where it scaled with Spell Power.
Removal of the deadzone. Having the deadzone removed right off the bat makes the melee/range situation of 5 yards much more manageable for dealing with a multitude of situations.
TBC Classic Hunter DPS Arena Guide
Shadow Priest is a potent specialization for Arena PvP. While it is not considered to be the best of the best, it makes its way to a number of top comps, allowing successful ranking and reaching the highest standings.
Beware—due to major strengths and weakness, Shadow Priest has high skill cap and can be rather punitive for inexperienced players! Practice playing this spec in PvE or duels to get hang of the abilities and their intricacies.
, This single spell is enough to warrant a strong slot. Discussed elsewhere and everywhere to death, it is Priest of all specializations that can access the combined effect of Paladin's
(in terms of Magic debuffs) and Shaman's
TBC Classic Shadow Priest DPS Arena Guide
B Tier Specs
While the 2v2 Arena can be rough for Enhancement's kit, both 3v3 and 5v5 are fine places for an Enhancement
, especially when paired with classes that both benefit from its physical buffs and can contribute some much-needed lockdown on kill targets.
This means that Enhancement will mostly be played in melee cleave setups sporting a
performing the lockdown role while the Enhancement provides support and removes all defenses and stops any heals in the way of victory!

! It is also much less likely that you will be constantly interrupted when you have 4 teammates to help you out.
is a deadly combo that can easily score a kill during the Bloodlust window, so make sure to coordinate its use and target with the rest of your team!
In the 3v3 and 2v2 Arenas, the prolonged nature of the games means less
value, and it is much easier for enemy Shamans and Priests to dispel it.
cannot be removed by
s and is an absolute nightmare to deal with, as Shamans rely on hard casts to deal damage, and long casts give enemies plenty of time to line of sight or interrupt you.
TBC Classic Elemental Shaman DPS Arena Guide
Balance isn't super common in arenas. Typically, Druids tend towards Resto and act as a healer. While the Balance specialization is tailored towards dealing damage, it does fall into the hybrid healer and utility category. It also depends on if you are playing with another healer. If there is another healer on your arena team, you will most likely spend less time healing and focus more on dealing damage alongside using crowd control. If you do not have a healer on your team, you will need to keep the health of your teammates in mind a lot more and cast heals as needed.
One of the biggest PvP changes to Druid going into TBC is the addition of
. When a target is cycloned, they are unable to make any action, are unable to be healed, and are unable to be damaged. This means you can use this on a target you want to crowd control while you focus kill a different target or you can use it on a kill target to lock their health and prevent incoming healing on them.
TBC Classic Balance Druid DPS Arena Guide
Rets are completely viable in at minimum 2v2 and 3v3 arena, however they will be much harder to get a high rating than your Warlock or Rogue comps. They lack a lot of the offensive control that you get from those classes, and instead you have many defensive abilities that you use to keep people alive. Because of this, you are not as viable with the traditional healers of Priest or Druid, and instead you will have to run almost exclusively with a Shaman healer, or another dps.
The advantages of a Retribution Paladin is a combination of your ability to perform insane burst through seal twisting, and your powerful defensive abilities. The Ret Paladin can really enable a warrior, with those
abilities keeping the warrior free to stay on the enemy druid or priest as needed. They can also provide setup of a kill with
, and you have your own damage Cooldowns in
(but remember that its a Magic Ability and Mages can
TBC Classic Retribution Paladin DPS Arena Guide
Feral Druids are the weakest of the three Druid specs in an Arena setting, but can still perform quite well in the hands of a skilled player. Ferals are most viable in 2v2 double DPS teams where their poor sustainability is less relevant while their high burst DPS can shine. Even in 2v2, however, Feral is not competitive during Seasons 1 and 2 of TBC, and only blossoms in Seasons 3 and 4. The main reason for this is the very poor Arena gear available to Ferals in the first two seasons: the early Gladiator sets
waste a ton of item budget on +Healing and therefore provide inadequate amounts of raw DPS. These sets are a prime example of the "hybrid tax" in early WoW, where hybrid gear sets were spread too thin in the variety of stats they provided, and therefore were not competitive on any one axis. In this case, because Feral Druids will never be able to achieve long term sustainability in an Arena match, they are much better served going "all in" on burst damage than by mixing mediocre DPS with mediocre healing output. In Season 3, Blizzard finally learned how to itemize Feral PvP gear properly, so the corresponding Gladiator sets are loaded with DPS stats like Hit Rating, Critical Strike Rating, and Armor Penetration. This is when Feral Druids start to really shine in 2v2 Arenas when paired with complementary DPS specs, as their damage output blows up with better gear and allows them to viably fill a DPS niche.
