MCV/DEVELOP has reported that
Activision Blizzard layoffs are expected to continue
in the marketing, PR, publishing, customer care and localization teams. While the original story cited upward 100 staff facing potential unemployment as the company transitioned to outsourcing non-development staff, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson has since responded, confirming that the company is considering centralizing some roles, though the number of employees is likely to be closer to 30 from the Sydney office and that their customer support and localization teams will not affected.
“We’ve been exploring how we might best integrate our capabilities across the business and be efficient as we evolve to meet growth opportunities and stay competitive in Asia Pacific. To that end, we have begun conversations with employees regarding a plan to centralize some roles across the region in our Sydney office. Decisions of this nature are never easy and supporting our employees through this process is our number one priority.”
In the original statement, an exclusive source told MCV/DEVELOP that the company was transitioning to fully outsource non-development teams.
“Activision’s part of the company doesn’t believe in community management and fandom,” said the source to MCV/DEVELOP. “They think their games sell themselves. They’d rather pop a couple of millions on having Beyonce tweet about CoD than hire a bunch of good people.”
This also follows on the recent
closure of the Activision Blizzard Versailles office
, subsequent
call for union strikes
in response, and larger
workforce layoffs in 2019
, although the
4th Quarter 2018
investor earnings call promised to use that restructuring to hire 20% more developers across all major teams, including Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, Diablo, and Call of Duty.
