World Of Warcraft Arena: Macro Guide
Hello, PvPers!
Welcome to Bolt's PvP macro guide! The guide below will feature comprehensive coverage of all things relating to macros in World of Warcraft arena. We'll be covering everything from the basics (targeting) to the advanced (setting up mod shift macros) and everything in between. I'll be going over some examples of how you would use various macros in the arena as well, so that all our readers can have an in-depth understanding of when and where these macros would be used!
If you find this guide useful, please give it a solid rating so that others can access it more easily.
What Are Macros and Why Do I Need Them?
Macros are bodies of instructions that, when pressed, create and execute a certain task. A simple arena macro that is often used is the Arena 1, 2 and 3 targeting system for quick target swapping. Without using a macro, a player would have to manually click the enemy character's nameplate, character body, or use tab in order to target them. By using a macro like /target arena1 and assigning it to a keybind, you can simply press a button and your character will automatically target the enemy player who is labeled as 'arena1'.
Macros encompass a world of different possibilities ranging from cooldown stacking, targeting, kicking, and even dispelling. By going through this guide and gaining an understanding of the practices involved with making macros and how they work, you're sure to crush your own personal goals in the World of Warcraft arena.
Macros will not and can not make a smart decision for you, nor can they break any of the game's basic rules like the GCD (global cooldown). One press of the macro will equate to one button click - you cannot get around this.
Accessing the Macro Interface
In order to access the macro interface in World of Warcraft, you'll need to open your chat box and type the following command: /macro
By doing the above, you'll be brought to an interface that looks like the image shown below.
Note that there are two separate tabs within the macros page; one that is labeled 'General Macros' and another that is labeled '<Character Name> Specific Macros'. Any macro you make within the general macros tab will be accessible and viewable on all of your characters, whereas any macro made within the character specific tab is only viewable and accessible on that character. For example, in the screenshot shown below, those seven macros I have listed will not show up if I log on to my Shaman unless I copy them to the general macros page.
Naming, Saving and Placing Your Macros
Once you've opened and accessed the macro interface, you'll be able to see a red box on the bottom right hand corner of the macros page that says 'New'. When you press that you'll be brought to an additional box that asks for a name for your macro, and has several images attached to it.
This is where you'll name your macro. The name will appear on the spell icon when you drag it to your bars. The red question mark icon will change depending on how you use #showtooltip (explained later in the guide), or simply based on the ability you choose. For example, if I run a
妖术
macro that says "/cast Hex" and the red question mark is currently selected as an image, after I save the macro it will show up as Hex with the same functioning cooldown tracker as the baseline Hex spell.
Once you've selected a title and an image icon for your macro, press 'Okay' and you'll be brought back to the macro page with your line marker at the top of the new macro. Congratulations, you're ready to start your own macro making process!
Basic Macro Commands: Arena
Listed below are the various beginning portions of macros you can expect to use in an arena setting, along with what they're actually going to do.
#showtooltip - Tells the game to showcase a certain icon on this macro. If I run the macro below, the icon will change to that of
灵魂链接图腾
. #showtooltip Spirit Link Totem | /cast healing surge |
/cast - Tells the game to execute the command of casting the following spell name. For example, the macro below will cast a healing surge on either myself or whoever I am targeting.
/cast Healing Surge
/target - Tells the game to execute the command to target the following name or enemy player. For example:
/target Drexia | /target arena1 | /target party1
/stopcasting - Tells the game to execute the command that stops your current cast or channel. If I'm in the middle of a
治疗之涌
cast and I press a macro that includes this command, it will stop my Healing Surge cast.
/cancelaura - Tells the game to execute the command that removes your current aura of the spell name listed. For example, the macro below would take me out of
寒冰屏障
instantly when pressed. /cancelaura Ice Block
Creating Your First Targeting Macros
You've made it! It's time to create your very first targeting macro in World of Warcraft arena! Lets start with targeting arena enemies 1, 2 and 3.
Head to your macros page, create a new macro, input the code listed below, press save, then drag it on to your action bar and voila! You've made your first arena targeting macro. This will target the enemy player that is at the very top of the enemy frames. The image below shows where arena 1, 2 and 3 would be in every 3v3 setting.
/target arena1
In that above example, the following codes would target the players mentioned.
Note: You can not copy these all in to one macro, it will not work. It requires a modifier component which is covered later in the guide.
/target arena1 - Targets Jlsx
/target arena2 - Targets Dodobird
/target arena3 - Targets Phancarry
Each of those need to be their own macro. Do not include the 'targets x player' portion, only the '/target arena1 or 2 or 3' portion.
Creating Your First CC Macros
Continuing on, we're going to touch quickly on the cast macros for World of Warcraft, including @cursor and @mouseover macros! We'll also add in functionality to combine the above mentioned targeting macros with your CC spells.
The basic syntax for every cast macro is simple:
/cast <spell name>
We want something a little bit more advanced than that though, so we'll be using the following:
/cast Hex
It's not that scary, I promise!
The above macro says the following: cast at arena enemy 1,
妖术
. If I used this macro against the team shown above, it would cast Hex on Jlsx without me having to target him, or untarget my current target. I could be targeting myself, press the macro and without losing target on myself, it would cast Hex on Jlsx! Cool, right?
This works for all forms of CC and I'll provide a few examples below.
Note: You cannot copy these all in to one macro, it will not work. It requires a modifier component which is covered later in the guide.
Here is an example of the macro in action. As you can see, I am targeting the Demon Hunter who is arena1, but I have landed the Hex successfully on the Hunter who is arena2 - the entire time my target remains the DH!
CC macro examples:
/cast Fear
恐惧
s Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Fear
Fears Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Fear
Fears Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Polymorph
变形术
s Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Polymorph
Polymorphs Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Polymorph
Polymorphs Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Hammer of Justice
Stuns Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Hammer of Justice
Stuns Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Hammer of Justice
Stuns Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Cyclone
旋风
s Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Cyclone
Cyclones Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Cyclone
Cyclones Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Entangling Roots
Roots Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Entangling Roots
Roots Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Entangling Roots
Roots Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Stormbolt
Stuns Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Stormbolt
Stuns Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Stormbolt
Stuns Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
/cast Paralysis
Paralyzes Jlsx without dropping the current target.
/cast Paralysis
Paralyzes Dodobird without dropping the current target.
/cast Paralysis
Paralyzes Phantcarry without dropping the current target.
All of these macros can be used against enemy teams in arena to knock out those CCs. You can edit around the CC names for your own, and they can also be replaced with interrupts like
风剪
,
拳击
,
法术封锁
, and
法术反制
to name a few!
Setting Up Focus Macros
Focus macros follow the same syntax as the /cast macros. I'm sure you're already guessing what comes next. You were most likely right! /cast <spell name> is our syntax!
Here are a few examples of interrupt macros that would fire at your focus target:
/cast Kick
/cast Pummel
/cast Spell Lock
/cast Command Demon
/cast Rebuke
/cast Counterspell
/cast Wind Shear
/cast Consume Magic
/cast Spear Hand Strike
/cast Silence
/cast Skull Bash
/cast Mind Freeze
/cast Solar Beam
/cast Countershot
You can always replace those interrupts with a spell of your choosing, be it an offensive spell or a defensive spell for your own party members!
Here is a picture of the focus macro in action. You can see that I am targeting the Demon Hunter, but my dispel still goes off on my Shadow Priest.
Setting Up Party Macros
Party macros are slightly different and do not follow the exact same rules as Arena1/2/3 targeting.
When using party targeting macros, your own character will almost always be at the top of the group, but you
do not
count as party1. In order to cast on yourself, you need to use either an @self or @name conditional. Party1 is the first member in your party, starting from the top, not counting yourself. For this reason, you'll only ever use party1 and party2 macros.
Listed below will be several examples of party1/2 macros along with the macro you'd use to target yourself if your name was John.
Note: You cannot copy these all in to one macro, it will not work. It requires a modifier component which is covered later in the guide.
/cast Blessing of Protection

/cast Purify Spirit

/cast Cleanse

As you can see in the screenshot below, I am targeting the enemy Demon Hunter, but using the macro that says /cast Purify Spirit. This means it casts my dispel on my spriest and I maintain my current target.
Adding Functionality
Mouseovers have long been used for things like dispelling party members, and applying DoTs to targets. Mouseovers are simple commands that follow the same rules as the ones mentioned above - they will fire the spell you list at the current target your mouse is hovering over. So if you were to have your mouse icon placed over Jlsx's unit frame, character frame, or character health bar, the spell would be cast on him. As long as your mouse is hovering over something that pertains to that character, the spell will fire.
Note: Using a mouseover will not make you untarget your current target.
Defensive examples:
/cast Purify Spirit
Will cast dispel on a friendly player you mouseover.
/cast Nature's Cure
Will cast dispel on a friendly player you mouseover.
/cast Cleanse
Will cast dispel on a friendly player you mouseover.
Offensive examples:
/cast Banish
Will banish the target pet or minion when you mouseover and press the button.
/cast Vampiric Touch
Will apply your VT to the current mouseover target. Great for RBGs and DoTing pets in arena.
/cast Flame Shock
This macro is great for BGs and DoTing pets as well.
Adding Functionality
Cursor macros are a great addition that came with Legion. They allow you to by pass the 'click on location' aspect of abilities like Totems,
真言术:障
,
恶魔变形
,
群体驱散
,
地狱火撞击
,
英勇飞跃
,
星辰坠落
,
乌索尔旋风
, etc. By using these macros, the green circle will no longer appear, and instead the ability will cast at wherever your cursor currently is. This is a very solid macro to have on any class that you have to make quick decisions on, such as
群体驱散
ling your healer, or linking your team's HP with
灵魂链接图腾
.
Examples:
/cast Spirit Link Totem
Casts
灵魂链接图腾
at your current cursor location.
/cast Mass Dispel
Casts
群体驱散
at your current cursor location.
/cast Ursol's Vortex
Casts
乌索尔旋风
at your current cursor location.
/cast Infernal Strike
Casts
地狱火撞击
at your current cursor location.
/cast Metamorphosis
Casts
恶魔变形
at your current cursor location.
/cast Heroic Leap
Casts
英勇飞跃
at your current cursor location.
/cast Starfall
Casts
星辰坠落
at your current cursor location.
/cast Power Word: Barrier
Casts
真言术:障
at your current cursor location.
/cast Lightning Surge totem
Casts
电能图腾
at your current cursor location.
/cast Earthen Shield Totem
Casts
大地之墙图腾
at your current cursor location.
Here is a video to showcase this type of macro:
Adding Modifiers to Your Macros
This is the more advanced section of the macro guide. If you've made it this far (all of you have!) then you'll be all set to follow along and make your first modifier macros!
Modifier macros do exactly what you'd think they do - they modify your macros slightly in different ways. Say you have the spell
忏悔
bound to the following three buttons: 7, Shift-7, and Control-7. You don't want to put Repentance on your bars three times, so you can apply a modifier Shift, modifier Control function to your macro for Repentance.
/cast Repentance
/cast Repentance
The above can also be written as:
/cast Repentance
/cast Repentance
What does this macro do? This macro is one button that will cast
Repentance at your current target
if there is no modifier pressed. If the modifier Shift is pressed when you press this ability, it will cast Repentance at your
focus target.
This is something that can be built into any variety of spells and targets for arena matches in World of Warcraft. I have a few examples listed below and will go over exactly what the macro will do when you press it!
/cast Hex
Casts
妖术
on the target.
/cast Hex
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will Hex arena1.
/cast Hex
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will Hex arena2
/cast Hex
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will hex arena3
The above mentioned macro is one button that when used in conjunction with any of its modifiers will Hex a different target.
More Examples:
/cast Polymorph
Casts
变形术
on the target.
/cast Polymorph
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will Polymorph arena1.
/cast Polymorph
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will Polymorph arena2.
/cast Polymorph
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will Polymorph arena3.
/cast Hammer of Justice
Casts
制裁之锤
on the target.
/cast Hammer of Justice
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will use Hammer of Justice on arena1.
/cast Hammer of Justice
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will use Hammer of Justice on arena2.
/cast Hammer of Justice
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will use Hammer of Justice on arena3.
/cast Paralysis
Casts
分筋错骨
on the target.
/cast Paralysis
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will Paralysis arena1.
/cast Paralysis
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will Paralysis arena2.
/cast Paralysis
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will Paralysis arena3.
/cast Fear
Casts
恐惧
on the target.
/cast Fear
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will Fear arena1.
/cast Fear
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will Fear arena2.
/cast Fear
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will Fear arena3.
/cast Silence
Casts
沉默
on the target.
/cast Silence
If you hold Shift while pressing the macro, it will Silence arena1.
/cast Silence
If you hold Control while pressing the macro, it will Silence arena2.
/cast Silence
If you hold Alt while pressing the macro, it will Silence arena3.
Summary
You finally made it to the very end of the guide, congratulations! You should now be well-versed in the art of macro making in World of Warcraft Arena. We made sure to hit on a huge variety of macros, ranging from the very basic spell casts, to targeting, mouseover, focus and modifier macros! Take the time to read each section carefully, and test some things in game before moving onto the next section. Don't go too overboard with a billion macros! There are far more advanced macros that can be made, but the fundamentals are the most important part. Below are a few notes to remember when making your macros in game!
#showtooltip - Shows the spell icon that is listed. For example, '#showtooltip Healing Surge' will show the
治疗之涌
icon.
Arena1 - Top enemy frame.
Arena2 - Middle enemy frame.
Arena3 - Bottom enemy frame.
Party1 - Middle frame in your party (not you!).
Party2 - Bottom frame in your party (not you!).
@focus - executes the command at your current focus target.
/stopcasting - stops your current cast.
Remember those basic things and go from there. You’ll be creating super advanced macros in no time!
Feel free to post any questions or concerns in the comment section. I’ll be sure to refer back to this at least once every 48 hours to edit, update and keep current with the new changes/feedback. Thank you for taking the time to read this guide, and I hope it is able to help you out on your journey to becoming a legendary PvPer!
