Engineering made, these are a rather cheap and effective way to improve any hunters damage. For any end-game boss only the best will suffice, no ice threaded arrows for Patchwerk.

Although the schematics to make these are a world drop, the drop-rate is highest in BRD, Scholo, Strat, & Dire Maul. It's probably easiest to buy them from the AH or Trade Channel.
Just FYI, you can turn Thorium Shells into Thorium Headed Arrows (same stats) by speaking with either the guy in the IF inn or in Ogrimmar there is a wandering tauren in the Valley of Honor (look for the blue question marks above their heads). They actually seem to auction off for a bit more as arrows.

it is only a minor increase to accurate slugs 4dps, but people charge in excess of a 1g per 200, for me that is like 10 to 15 mins. to expensive.

Lvl 53 Warrior.
I use these (well Thorium Tipped Arrows) with my Heartseeking Crossbow to pull mobs, and I get crits at 380-400
Thats nothing to a hunter I know, but its nice to actually do some damage when pulling mobs ;)
and as a warrior, a stack of 200 will last me a week.. so I dont really mind the price too much
(and before you flame me for using a Heartseeking Crossbow.. It was a Gift from a friend, and +9 Agi and +4 Stamina are the sh#@!)

Is actually very significant...equates to an additional 50 or so damage per shot, depending on your weapon speed. It is 10-15 more damage per shot than Accurate Slugs, which is 2x the value of a Sniper Scope.
You will definitely notice the difference in damage on a crit.
That said, I don't like paying over 1g for them either...

best if you can make them your self... as i see most hunters as engi's anyway not so much a problem - and now that coremarkman plans drop too... engi is turing into a very good hunter skill (at least later)... now if ONLY there where more than say 5 useful plans....

people aren't buying them because 65s is still too expensive. long instance runs we can use up to or more than an entire 16slot of bullets/arrows. at your price, thats over 10 gold for a quiver/pouch full of ammo. the only reason i see these existing is for engineers that want to use them themselves, not for selling purposes. it's not practical.

If I buy materials carefully and do not try to make a killing on each sale I find this to be a good, steady money maker. I was fortunate the plans cost less than 4g on AH - recouped that the first day. I do keep prices reasonable - figuring this will encourage more high level hunters to use the best bullets they can (and hence expand the market).

As an Engineer, I've learned that there aren't a lot of ways to make money with this profession. Why? As you may already know, it's because so many things you can make are usable only by other Engineers (who can probably make them themselves), and they're not consumed when used (so you only ever need to have 1 of them).
However, bullets are a notable exception. Hunters and other gun-wielders need them, don't have to be engineers to use them, and use them up.
So I can go on a thorium-mining run, come back, make a bunch of these, and auction them (I always charge 1g per stack, because I know some Hunters who think 1g is fair and more than 1g is not), and they always get bought out. It takes some time and effort (and some travel and repair money), but why shouldn't time and effort be rewarded? Alternatively, I can buy the thorium bars and dense stones from the AH and make bullets -- the profit margin is narrower, but it's better than nothing. Basically I'm getting paid for doing something only 285+ Engineers can do, which makes sense.
Every profession should have a way to make an income by producing and selling some type of consumable item -- Alchemy is all about doing this, for example. But for Engineers, it's bullets.

I'm a li'l confused :{ The mats call for x2 Thorium bars, is that per bullet, or is it per stack of 200 bullets? On my server(Shadow Council) the bullets sell for 2g average per stack of 200. The thorium bars sell for 5g average per stack of 20. When I have the opportunity/money to have an engineer make me these, I am having to pay 32g average for 16 stacks! Am I getting ripped here?

With the new cross server BGs & how easy it is to get AV rep.. I just see hunters making honored with AV & buying the rounds from them for 54s each stack & only take 1dps hit compared to the price most of you are asking. I my self make the ammo with my druid & send it to my hunter. Its just a pain to get all the dense stone needed most of the time :(

My base ranged damage with atk pwr added is 118-148.
To figure it out its like this..
(NewMinDmg - OldMinDmg) + (NewMaxDmg - OldMaxDmg)/WeaponSpeed/2
So in this case it is...
(144-118) + (174-148) / 1.7 / 2
The numbers work out with all bullets when rounding up or down the decimal. For instances..
Thorium Shells(17.5dps)
(147-118)+(179-148)/1.7 = 17.64
or
(147-118)/1.7/2 = 17.05 (Min damage DPS Increase)
(179-148)/1.7/2 = 18.23 (Max damage DPS Increase)
(17.05+18.23)/2 = 17.64 (Average DPS increase)

All bullets add a set amount of DPS - Damage Per Second. Thorium Bullets add 17.5 DPS, so using them with a 2.0 second gun will add 35 damage (17..5 x 2) to each shot.
Also, the merchant buy price on these is 20 silver per stack of 200 shells. The merchant selling price would be approximately 80 silver per stack or 40 copper per bullet as opposed to the 40 silver per bullet shown.
Scopes add per shot, not per second. You will see the change when you attach one.

The damage bonus these give depends entirely on the speed of your gun. If you have a 2.00 speed gun then you will deal 35 damage extra with each shot. If you have a 3.00 speed gun it will be 52.5 extra damage per shot.
