Hello and welcome to this guide on how to use
WoWAnalyzer
! WoWAnalyzer is a tool that aims to assist you in reviewing your logs and providing actionable feedback that you can use to better your play. In this guide we’ll explain how to get started using WoWAnalyzer, show you some advanced features and how to use them, and finally lay out some of the limitations of the tool and how you can avoid getting misleading feedback.
What is WoWAnalyzer
WoWAnalyzer
is a website that takes combat logs that have been uploaded to Warcraft Logs and scans them to analyze your play and provide feedback and metrics about your performance. It does this through several methods including tracking buff uptimes, cooldown usage, incorrect/cancelled casts, wasted resources, and more. It also does data analysis and provides you with useful and interesting statistics like how much your trinkets, set bonuses, artifact and crucible traits, legendaries, and talents are contributing to your performance. The most important suggestions are collected into a checklist format that shows you exactly what mistakes you are making and how you can correct those mistakes in the future. If you dig a bit deeper you will find a wealth of information and metrics about the mechanics of your spec, which you can use to make informed decisions about how to prepare for and execute fights. Whether you’re learning a new spec and looking to improve, or an experienced player wondering how well your trinkets perform outside of a simulator, WoWAnalyzer is a great tool to have in your arsenal!
Getting Started
Before you can use WoWAnalyzer, you need a basic understanding of
Warcraft Logs
and how to upload your logs. If you’ve never used Warcraft Logs before, we will cover the very basics here - enough to get you to the point where you can use WoWAnalyzer.
Uploading to Warcraft Logs
If you or your guild already logs, you’re 80% of the way there. Simply find an existing log of your character on Warcraft Logs, and copy the report URL from the address bar (an example report URL:
https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/abCDefGhIjKlmNOP
). Once you have that, you can skip ahead to the next section.
If you don't have any uploaded logs, you'll need to make your own. First, you need to ensure that Advanced Combat Logging is enabled in your game client settings. You can find it under System -> Network.
Once that’s enabled, to begin logging simply type "/combatlog" in-game. All of your combat actions will be recorded into a file on your hard drive. Now you can start pulling raid bosses. When you’re done, download the
Warcraft Logs Uploader
if you haven’t already (and create a Warcraft Logs account if you don't already have one). Open the uploader, sign in and select Upload a Log, then use the provided file navigator to find your combat log file (normally found in your WoW installation folder, under Logs/WoWCombatLog.txt). Upload the log, and once you have the report URL for the uploaded log you’re ready to use WoWAnalyzer.
(Note: combat logging is turned off by default every time you log out or close the game client, so you have to re-enable "/combatlog" any time you switch characters or restart the game. This can be automated with an add-on - I recommend Loggerhead.)
From Warcraft Logs to WoWAnalyzer
To use WoWAnalyzer, paste your Warcraft Logs report URL into the field on
WoWAnalyzer’s home page
. Then pick the fight you want to analyze, and select your character. That's it! The analyzer should do the rest of the work. Alternatively, you can search for your character's logs directly on WoWAnalyzer using the character search feature on the front page.
The Basics
Checklist/Suggestions
Once you have a fight loaded into WoWAnalyzer, you’ll be presented with either a Checklist, or a Suggestions list. Not all specs support the Checklist yet, but don't worry - all the same information is provided in the Suggestions list, it's just a different presentation format (in fact it's a good idea to be familiar with Suggestions even if the Checklist is present, as it will sometimes contain tips that aren't covered by the Checklist). These lists will give you a summary of how well you are performing, whether you are making any mistakes (in the Checklist, issues are denoted with the red X) and suggestions on how to address those mistakes. These should be your first steps if you are new to a spec or are unsure what you should be focusing on, as they are typically the highest priority issues. In the Suggestions list, suggestions marked as “Major” should be your top priority.
Statistics
Below the Checklist is a series of boxes that display relevant statistics and metrics for your spec.
This includes things like dot/buff uptimes, number of procs, and set bonus/legendary/trinket contributions. Some specs support showing contributions from talents (and the equivalent contribution that you would have gotten from a competing talent), and some support showing you the relative contribution of individual stats (commonly referred to as stat weights). Some of the statistics come with additional breakdowns, which outline in greater detail how the statistic is calculated.
Many of these boxes are specific to the spec being analyzed. They can be of great use if you know what you are looking for, or they can provide you with interesting data if you’re curious about how a certain talent performs or what spells you’re spending your procs on. An example of how to make good use of the data section is to log two fights with different legendary or trinket setups, and then compare the contributions from each to determine which is more appropriate for a given encounter. This is a task that is frequently time-consuming and tedious when done by hand or in a spreadsheet.
Advanced WoWAnalyzer
Beyond the Checklist and Suggestions tabs, a lot of additional functionality exists in WoWAnalyzer that can be very useful if you know how to take advantage of it. Here are a few examples of the additional features you can find, though this is by no means an exhaustive list.
Timeline
At the bottom of the page, the Timeline will show you - you guessed it - a timeline of your casts throughout the fight. This is similar to the Warcraft Logs timeline feature, with some additional bells and whistles. The first row in the timeline is the global cooldown (GCD) tracker. The blue sections indicate periods in time when you are on the GCD. The white bars indicate when the GCD has finished and you are ready to cast again. The second row is the channeling tracker, which is similar to the GCD tracker but indicates periods when you are casting or channeling a spell/item/potion. An ideal GCD/channeling timeline will have full coverage of the entire timeline between the two bars, meaning that you did not spend any time not casting or on the GCD.
The remaining rows show your spell casts and their associated cooldowns. A blue bar above a spell denotes the buff associated with that spell, a yellow bar denotes a debuff. Some specs also support displaying inefficient casts, which are spell casts that were not the optimal choice at the current moment. Things like refreshing DoTs too early and using filler spells when more powerful spells are available are considered inefficient casts. These are highlighted in red on the Timeline.
Cooldowns
Many specs support showing you how effectively you used your cooldowns during a fight. This can be particularly helpful to see whether you are getting the most out of your strong burst windows. The Cooldowns tab is located next to the Timeline tab. Here you will find a list of your major cooldown uses, when they were used and how long they lasted, a cast sequence that shows you what you cast during the cooldown, and a throughput meter that shows exactly how much damage/healing you output during the cooldown. If you are familiar with the optimal way to use your spec's cooldowns, this section can be helpful in determining whether you are making the best use of them. Conversely if you are not getting the most out of your cooldowns, the Cooldowns graph will show you how and why.
Mana Graphs
Healers in particular can take advantage of the Mana graphs. These graphs provide a visual intuition into how mana usage relates to boss health and fight length, and can assist you in effectively managing your mana. The first graph displays your mana over the course of the fight, relative to the bosses health. It shows you how you are spending your mana throughout a fight. As a rule of thumb, your mana should be roughly equal to the bosses health at any given point in the fight. The second graph overlays your healing per second over time on top of your mana usage over time. This graph can show you where your mana expenditure is not very efficient, relative to your healing output.
Caveats
As with any tool, there are certain limitations with WoWAnalyzer that you should be aware of. Understanding these limitations will help you get more effective and useful feedback from it.
Encounter Choice
WoWAnalyzer operates on the assumption that all fights have a boss that is active 100% of the time. This is also known as a "Patchwerk"-style encounter, and it simplifies a lot of the mathematics behind the more advanced analytics like inefficient casts and downtime. This can, however, lead to issues in analysis on fights like Imonar or Argus which have periods where the boss is out of range or unattackable. The analyzer will incorrectly classify these periods as “time spent not casting” and penalize you, even if you played perfectly during the periods when the boss was active. This is something the WoWAnalyzer team is actively trying to address, but have yet to do so in a comprehensive manner. For the time being, you will get the most accurate results if you analyze fights that are very close to Patchwerk-style in nature, like Varimathras - that is, bosses with no intermission phases and light movement/adds, if any.
Note that WoWAnalyzer will still work on any raid encounter, and much of the data collected can be useful for comparison purposes. Just keep in mind that some metrics may be skewed for the reasons listed above. Additionally, WoWAnalyzer does not support dungeon logs at this moment, although it is being investigated as a possibility for Battle for Azeroth.
Spec Support
WoWAnalyzer is maintained by a group of volunteers, and as such spec support can vary wildly. Some specs have very comprehensive analyzers, while others are a work in progress or are no longer actively maintained. Additionally some features may not be available to a spec, depending on their level of support. WoWAnalyzer’s home page has a list of the specs that are supported and how up to date they are. Alternatively, you can ask in your respective class discords to what degree they endorse the analyzers for your spec(s).
Private Logs
Due to access restrictions, WoWAnalyzer does not support analysis of private logs. See WoWAnalyzer's
page on private logs
for more information.
