Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Classic Burning Crusade: Everything We Know So Far! The Burning Crusade Classic (Classic TBC) was officially announced at BlizzConline on February 19, 2021, with Beta opening on March 23, 2021. This guide will discuss what is currently known about versions, release schedules, player choices, beta, changes between Original TBC and Classic TBC, known issues, and perks!
This guide will be updated as more information is known.
Content Versions and Release Schedule
Classic TBC Initial Version
The release version of Classic TBC will be the 2.4.3 TBC client. This means that the class tuning will be mostly done for the entire expansion. However, they also indicated that bosses will be hand tuned to be closer to their original (2.0) states, taking into account that actual player power will not be up to end-of-expansion levels at launch.
Like Classic, Classic TBC will also not cost an extra subscription fee to play. Any WoW-subscribed player will be able to play Classic TBC. (There is indication there may be a Classic TBC Deluxe Edition, which may cost an extra fee -- see the section about Perks).
Classic TBC Content Phase Releases
Like Classic, Classic TBC will release content in phases.
Phase 1: Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, Magtheridon's Lair
Phase 2: Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep
Phase 3: Hyjal, Black Temple
Phase 4: Zul'aman
Phase 5: Sunwell Plateau
We can assume that while Phase 1 content will be available for Classic TBC, the rest of the phases will not be testable immediately in Beta. Following Classic, these will likely be testable in upcoming PTR builds after release.
Choosing Classic or Classic TBC
For players with characters currently on Classic realms, there will be three choices for deciding their character's fate. A Pre-Patch event will come online before the launch of Classic TBC, and when the servers come up, they will take a snapshot of all characters and realms. At that time, players will be presented with three choices.
Classic Now, Classic Forever
: Players who do not wish to progress to Classic TBC will have the option to transfer their characters free to a "Classic Era Realm". This realm will be forever kept at Classic Phase 6 (Naxxramas) and never progress on to Classic TBC.
Progress to Classic TBC
: This is the easiest option: do nothing and stay where you are. The current servers will be progressing on to Classic TBC.
Do both -- for a fee
. This paid option will allow you to clone that character snapshot and move it to a Classic Era Realm, while your original model stays on the progression server and moves on to Classic TBC. There is no word yet on how much this will cost, but if you're undecided, it will preserve your options.
Level 58 Character Boosts
This is another fee service that will allow a player to boost one Classic character to level 58. This is to allow players who might not have been interested in playing Classic but who wish to play Classic TBC to join their friends in the new expansion. Again, we don't know how much this will be (a regular character boost in Retail is currently $60 USD), but unlike the Retail character boost, there are restrictions.
Will not be usable on Classic Era Realms, only on progression servers.
Cannot be used on Draenei or Blood Elves.
Limited to 1 boost per account.
Changes Between Original and Classic TBC
This section will cover those changes that will be different between the releases of original TBC in January 2007 and Classic TBC in 2021. While much of the core game will not change, there are some quality of life changes that will occur between the two systems that account for changes made in the past 15 years.
Draenei and Blood Elves Will Release Earlier
In original TBC, these two races were not available for play until the launch of TBC in January 2007. In Classic TBC, there will be a pre-patch event in normal Classic that will precede the opening of the Dark Portal. At that time, both Draenei and Blood Elves, with their new leveling zones, will also launch, allowing players to level up Draenei and Blood Elf characters to join their friends more quickly in Outlands.
Changes to Paladin Seals
In the original TBC, Horde and Alliance Paladins had different Seals. Blood Elves had Seal of Blood, and Alliance Paladins had Seal of Vengeance. This led to a lot of early speculation from players wanting to play Paladins in Classic TBC re-rolling as Horde to take advantage of the more-powerful Seal of Blood ability. However, in the name of faction balance, both Horde and Alliance Paladins will be given access to both Seals.
LFG Finder
There will be some modernizing of the Looking for Group tool, which was present in the original TBC, but didn't allow for automatic group formation for dungeons and raids. Blizzard has indicated there will be some improvements to the old LFG tool, but
it would still not allow for automated group formation.
Early datamining strings support this will be
a tool for groups and dungeons, not for raids.
Nerfed Items in BCC
There are ten items Blizzard has chosen to nerf between Classic and Burning Crusade Classic. These items have been determined to be overpowered, and thus their powers will be limited when BCC is released. Many of these mostly affect Arena or other PvP, but other items present a broader nerf. These include:
潮汐咒符
- will no longer work in Arenas, and the effect is more likely to be resisted in characters over 60
末日徽记
- effect reduced to 60% of the user's health and mana
快速暗影反射器
,
高辐射烈焰反射器
,
超低温寒冰偏斜器
- effects more likely to be resisted in characters over 60
地精火箭头盔
,
侏儒洗脑帽
- will no longer work in Arena, effects more likely to be resisted in characters over 60
闪光雷
,
铁皮手雷
,
- effects more likely to be resisted in characters over 60
钻石水瓶
- no longer benefits from healing bonuses
化石药水
- no longer allows the user to remove the buff for the entire duration
丝瓜
- does not remove Bleed effects from enemies over level 60
有限无敌药水
- no longer works in Arenas, only reduces physical damage taken by 120 for 8 seconds rather than immunity from physical attacks for 6 seconds.
泰坦合剂
- health bonus dropped from 1200 to 400.
For more information, see this news item with Blizzard blue post.
Changes to World Buffs
Classic World Buffs will now be removed at the beginning of raid encounters. These include buffs like
屠龙者的咆哮
or
酋长的祝福
.
PvP Changes
Arenas now have a rule that all abilities, spells, and items with a cooldown longer than 15 minutes will no longer work in Arenas. This means nearly all consumables and several items will no longer work (the list of nerfed items above also list several of these items)
Another change from the original TBC will be that arena teams will now be allowed to have alternate team members. For example, in original TBC, a 2v2 Arena team could only have two registered players, meaning that the team would not be able to play if one of the members was unable to log on. In Classic TBC, Arena teams will be able to have twice as many registered players, so the team can swap in other members to account for playing schedules or other impediments to play. A 2v2 team would have 4 eligible players, a 3v3 team would have 6, etc.
Graphics Improvements
While Classic TBC seems to be using the old character and environmental models,
Classic TBC does contain customization options for ray tracing.
Ray tracing can greatly improve lighting effects in games, with more realistic use of light and shadow.
Not all players will be able to use ray tracing, as this has several higher-level requirements:
a newer-generation graphics card that supports DirectX Raytracing Tier 1.1, with latest drivers
DirectX 12 installed
have the May 2020 Windows 10 update installed, version 2004.
To turn on Ray Tracing, go under
System > Advanced > Ray Traced Shadows
. If your system doesn't currently support ray tracing, this will be disabled and the options to turn it on will state that your system doesn't support his feature.
Perks in Classic TBC
Datamined information have given clues to some mounts, toys, and pets! We don't know the source of all of these items, but will update this list when more is known. There is some indication that the mount and toys may be part of a not-yet-announced Deluxe Edition -- likely a for-pay DLC bundle (regular Classic TBC is free with any paid WoW subscription).
Viridian Phase-Hunter Mount
: This mount, datamined from the Burning Crusade Classic beta client, indicates that it is probably meant to be used in Outlands.
黑暗之门
and
伊利丹之路
toys were both originally available from the discontinued WoW Trading Card Game.
虚空龙宝宝项圈
pet - If you have the original Burning Crusade Collector's Edition registered to your account, you will get this pet in Classic Burning Crusade. (Unfortunately, there no longer seems to be a way to check this in your account information).
Playing in Classic TBC Beta
Beta for Classic TBC began on March 23, 2021, with invitation emails going out. Players who have been invited should restart their Battle.net clients to see the "Burning Crusade Classic Beta" option in the games dropdown in the lower left cover of Battle.net. Download the client to begin!
Getting Invited to Beta
Players who were not selected for the initial round of Beta can still get into subsequent rounds. To make sure you're opted in, sign into your account on the World of Warcraft site, go to the main WoW Classic page, and scroll down to "Join the Beta".
Like with the recent Shadowlands Beta, there are no keys to give away. The key system was misused too often by players getting keys and then selling them, so Blizzard has adopted a different system for direct invites to specific Battle.net IDs. At this time, this system is not yet in place for Classic TBC, but we expect this system will be in place later in the Beta process.
WoW Classic Main Page
Current Beta Progression
For the first beta release,
the following terms apply
:
Characters may level up to
70
.
Battlegrounds and Arenas are available for queuing.
Addon use has been enabled.
Creating a Beta Character
There are currently 3 options for creating a character in Beta:
Use the "Create Character" button at the bottom of the character list to create a new level 1 character.
Use the "Template Character" at the bottom left-center to create a new level 58 character.
Use the "Copy Character" button at the bottom left-center to copy over an existing Classic character.
For more information about Copy Character, see this news item
.
If you create a new level 58 character, you will be outfitted with Uncommon-quality gear, including appropriate weapons and jewelry. Your weapon skills will be at maximum (290), and you'll know all your abilities at maximum level for 58. In addition, if you're a pet class, your pets will also have all their available skills maximized for 58. The only skill you get that isn't maximized is riding, which is 75 (basic level 30 riding skill -- this makes sense because you don't get the improved riding skill until level 60). You will have no developed profession skills, so if you want to learn Professions, you'll need to start at level 1. Some classes start out with level 1 professions, and others do not.
You'll receive 3-4
符文布背包
, depending on your class (for example, Warlocks get a soul shard bag and Hunters get a shot/ammo bag instead of a 4th
符文布背包
), and an
Outlands Survival Kit
.
The
Outlands Survival Kit
gives you a few basic items, including:
stack of level 45 food (also a stack of level 45 water if you're a caster)
some basic supplies for your class -- poisons and
盗贼工具
for rogues,
地狱火石
for warlocks, etc.
a level 30 racial mount
Melee characters may also get some different weapons to cover different melee specs.
PvP in Beta
TBC introduced honor as a currency that can be spent on rewards such as items, weapons, and armor. PvP ranking was also removed with the release of TBC.
To read more about changes to the honor system in the original TBC, check out the
Blizzard PvP Honor System FAQ from 2006.

I’m excited for TBC as much as everyone does but why does it seem like blizzard wants to speed through the beta process into releasing TBC ASAP? Have we not learned from the countless disasters of expansion releases being pushed when they weren’t ready to be pushed? It also seems like there’s VERY few beta testers as it is right now. Can we start pushing more beta invites? Look to release sometime in like June/July or later so we can have something as polished as possible to enjoy instead of instantaneously hating as it’s released?
Thank you
