Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Windwalker Monk. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Windwalker Monk.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Windwalker Monk during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working
up to level 115
, creating some interesting situations, as some effects from legendaries
became baseline effects or talents in BFA
.

Core Changes from Legion to BFA
Windwalker Monks did not receive any major changes going into Battle for Azeroth. The biggest changes to Windwalker Monks are the addition of
豪能酒
,
风火雷电
, and
躯不坏
to the Global Cooldown and the addition of a mechanic that allows
幻灭踢
to reduce the cooldown on
怒雷破
and
旭日东升踢
, which helps to fill the gap in the rotation that was previously occupied by
风领主之击
.
神鹤引项踢
having its Chi cost reduced from 3 to 2 also has a drastic effect on the “smoothness” of the AOE rotation, with the amount of resource in being balanced much better with the resources out.
Just keep playing. Windwalker Monks aren’t very different from in Legion. If you had practiced the Legion version of Windwalker Monk, the Battle for Azeroth version won’t be drastically different.
Impact on Rotation and Playstyle
There isn’t a drastic change in rotation or playstyle from Legion to Battle for Azeroth. The abilities that were added to the Global Cooldown were few for Windwalker, so the effect is minimal. The addition of
幻灭踢
reducing the cooldown on
怒雷破
and
旭日东升踢
helps to fill the space in the rotation left by the removal of
风领主之击
. Overall the base playstyle is slightly faster and has less downtime, but is very similar to the base playstyle in Legion.
Impact of Losing Artifact Weapons
The biggest change that comes with losing the artifact weapon and the related traits is the loss of self-healing. This came in the form of
善恶有报
and
治疗之风
. However, the addition of
活血术
and its subsequent buffing means that Windwalker does still have decent self-heals, just not passive ones.
When looking at the rotation and priority the change to
幻灭踢
, reducing the cooldown on
怒雷破
and
旭日东升踢
, means that
风领主之击
is not missed when in the midst of the rotation. However, it is missed as a HUGE burst ability when out questing to be used to kill weak targets quickly.
War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for WW Monks
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For WW Monks the abilities affected by this change are:

Windwalkers only had three abilities added to the GCD:
豪能酒
,
风火雷电
, and
躯不坏
. This means that Windwalker got off relatively easy, and the effect on the playstyle is minimal. It will take a little getting used to in order to adjust, but it's not as disruptive as the GCD changes are for other classes and specs.
Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event
. To add to that, Legion legendaries
will stop working at level 116

- Passive - New Tier 4 (level 60) talent, replaced

. Increases the range of

and reduces its cooldown by 10 seconds. Used when you need the extra range or reduced cooldown.
铁布衫
- Passive - New Tier 5 (level 75) talent, replaced

. Provides a stacking buff that reduces all damage taken by 2% per stack, up to 5 stacks. Gains 5-second duration per Chi spent. Used when small but steady damage is more frequent than big hits of magic or physical damage.
灵魂专注
- Passive - New Tier 7 (level 100) talent, replaced

, inspired by both the former artifact trait,

, and (less so) legendary

. Reduces the cooldown of

by 1 second per 2 chi spent. Not typically used unless reduced cooldown will help

- Active - New baseline healing spell. Replacing

. Stronger in just about every way than

ever was.
Changed

- Now provides 1 Chi per target hit, up to a maximum of 2 Chi.
真气升腾
- Now also increases maximum energy by 20.
豪能酒
- Now provides 2 Chi, instead of 5. Added to the GCD.
连击
- Grants 1% increased damage per stack, down from 2% per stack.
碧玉疾风
- Cost changed from 1 Chi to 4 energy up front and 4 energy per second. Can be toggled on/off rather than have a set duration.
白虎下凡
- Duration reduced from 45 seconds to 20 seconds, cooldown reduced from 3 minutes to 2 minutes.
躯不坏
- Duration increased to 12 seconds, damage bonus reduced from 40% to 20%. Added to the GCD.
风火雷电
- Added to the GCD.
扫堂腿
- Changed from Tier 4 talent to baseline. Stun duration reduced from 5 seconds to 3 seconds, cooldown increased from 45 seconds to 60 seconds.
怒雷破
- AOE damage changed from 100% to all targets hit to 100% for main target and 50% to all other targets hit.

- Damage increase to

reduced from 40% per stack to 10% per stack. Added cap at 5 stacks.
幻灭踢
- Now reduces the cooldown of

and
旭日东升踢
by 1 second per use.

- Duration reduced from 2 seconds to 1.5 seconds.

I see that Effuse was replaced with Vivify.... But on my character specs or talents I do not see either option. Currently stuck with NO heal....,
I also can't find Leg Sweep anyhwere. It disappeared from my action bar and is not available in my specs or talents. I see Tiger Tail Sweep as a talent option but.... Not the original.
What am i missing?
