Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Burning Crusade Classic Socketed Gems! This guide will explain how socketed gems work in Burning Crusade Classic, including how to use colored gems and Meta gems, which require specific criteria to activate. Later, this guide will include gem charts so you can discover where to find the best gems for your needs!
Burning Crusade was the first expansion to introduce the
珠宝加工
profession, and along with that, the first to introduce gems you could insert into sockets to add stats and traits to your gear. Gems in Burning Crusade come in a rainbow of colors. Understanding how to use these gems properly and when color matching is necessary will help you know what gems to look for.
While Jewelcrafting is a reliable source for gems, there are many other sources for gems, including dungeon and raid drops, world drops, quests, reputation rewards, and PvP rewards. There are some low-level Common quality gems you can even buy from NPC vendors.
Also, while Jewelcrafting will be added back into the Classic zones on Classic/Burning Crusade progression servers, socketed gems are not part of the Classic Jewelcrafting. Azeroth-era gear has no sockets.
For more information about Jewelcrafting, please see our separate guide:
Burning Crusade Classic Guide to Jewelcrafting
Colored Gems in Outlands
Gems in Outlands come in six colors, each of which fits into any slot, but may provide bonuses if the gem color matches the slot color. Some gear will offer a Socket Bonus, which you only get if you match the colored slots to the properly colored gems. Meta Gems also only activate under certain conditions, such as having more Blue gems socketed than Yellow, and that too relies on matching gem color to slot type. You only have to worry about matching socket type to gem color if there are Socket Bonuses or Meta Gems in play.
For example, the blacksmithed item
王者壁垒
has three gem slots -- one Blue and two Yellow. There is also a Socket Bonus that gives +4 Critical Strike Rating. This bonus will only apply if you have filled these colored gem slots with the correct colored gems. So, in this case, you can have a Blue, Purple, or Green gem in the first Blue slot, and Yellow, Orange, or Green gems in each of the two Yellow slots. Any mismatch between slot type and gem color will negate the bonus.
There are some special named high-level gems not specifically listed here, but the colors still correspond to usual traits. A more detailed list of all available gems, their stats, and how to acquire them will follow later.
There are three colored gem slots in Outlands gear: Blue, Red, and Yellow. While you can fit any gem in any color slot, you may lose some benefits by not matching colors to slots.
Some of the items below can only be purchased by vendors or acquired by drops. The rest represent the base gems as needed by Jewelcrafters.

海浪翡翠
(green), and
影歌紫玉
(purple) will not be available until Phase 6.
Single-color gems
(Blue, Red, and Yellow) have one stat or trait that they can improve.
Multi-color gems
(Orange, Green, and Purple) provide two stats or traits, but the amounts of any single
primary
stat are lower.
For example, the rare quality Yellow gem
闪耀红曜石
offers +8 Intellect. The rare-quality Orange gem
鲁莽黄晶玉
and it offers +9 Healing and +4 Intellect.
So how do you decide what is best? Part of it is based on whether you want concentration on a single trait, or two traits which may have more overall points, but less concentration in just one. If that piece of gear also has a Socket Bonuses or a Meta Gem slot, you may also need to decide on what to use based on those requirements.
Can you put a gem in a slot that doesn't correspond to the color? The answer is yes, but you will lose out on any bonuses the item may offer for having it filled with the correct color.
Prismatic Gems
Prismatic gems fit into any color gem slot, but not into a Meta slot. In Outlands, there are only two such gems, and both are created through Enchanting:
棱光之球
- +3 Resist All. Created with 325 Enchanting skill.
虚空宝珠
- +4 Resist All. Created with 370 Enchanting skill.
Meta Gems in Outlands
Meta Gems are special high-level gems that only fit into a Meta socket, and they must meet certain criteria before they will work. Meta gems calculate all the gems you have equipped, as these require some combination of Blue, Red, or Yellow gems already socketed in your gear to activate. When you mouse over a Meta Gem, the gem's activation criteria will be listed.
Some Meta Gems are created with Jewelcrafting. Others are drops, earned through reputation or PvP rewards.
Some examples of Meta Gem activation requirements:
Thundering Skyfire Diamond - chance to increase Melee/Ranged attack speed - must have 2 Blue, 2 Yellow, And 2 Red to activate
Tenacious Earthstorm Diamond - +12 Defense, chance to restore Health on hit - must have 5 Blue to activate
Mystical Skyfire Diamond - chance to increase Spell Cast speed - must have more Blue than Yellow to activate
Multi-color gems -- Orange, Green, And Purple -- also count as Blue, Yellow, or Red for fulfilling Meta gem requirements. For example, a Green gem will count as
both
Yellow and Blue; if you need 2 Blue and 2 Yellow to activate a particular Meta gem, then socketing 2 Green gems will fulfill that requirement.
When balancing the issue of "must have more Blue than Yellow", however, you might want to make sure that you don't overdo the Green gems. When determining whether you have more Blue than Yellow, you will need to count your Green, Purple, and Orange gems as well.
Prismatic gems count as all three, so socketing a Prismatic gem will count as a Blue, Red, AND Yellow gem.
How to Socket Gems into Gear
If your gear has a socket, you can insert a gem by Shift-Right-clicking on the piece of gear. This will bring up an interface that shows the gear item and any sockets it might have. From there, simply drag the gem you wish to socket into the space. This will either drop the gem into the empty socket, or replace whatever gem is already there.
There is no way to remove an previously socketed gem intact. Dragging a new gem on top of that slot will destroy the current gem and insert the new one. It's similar to how one Enchant overwrites another on the same piece of gear. Be certain that you really want to overwrite the old gem!
There is no way to add sockets to gear in Burning Crusade Classic. Either the gear item has sockets or it doesn't.
Selecting Gems
Wowhead's database has many different filters you can use to help you find gems to fit your needs. Dropdowns allow you to pick the color gem you're targeting, as well as the quality. For example, choosing Blue Gems > Rare will bring up six options (plus one raw gem).
Interface for selecting gems by color and rarity
One of the coolest features is the ability to select for Stat Weights depending on your class and spec. From there, you can decide to weight different abilities based on your own priorities. Wowhead's database will suggest some for you based on what you pick.
Select a Class and Build...
...and get a list of weighted stats, which you can change to your liking.

One major error in this guide:
It is NOT true that only red gems can fit into a red slot. You can fit ANY gem (excluding meta gems) into ANY gem socket (excluding meta gem sockets).
Matching the color of the gem to the color of the socket is only relevant if you want the SOCKET BONUS on a piece of gear. If a piece of gear has a Socket Bonus, you get that bonus only if all the gem sockets are filled with a "matching" gem (e.g., if you have a red gem socket, you can match it with a purple, red, or orange gem, but not a green, blue, or yellow gem).
Judging whether or not the Socket Bonus is worth it is up to you. For example, a DPS Warrior may want to strictly stack red +Strength gems into all of their gem sockets for maximum DPS. If the item has a Red, Yellow, and Blue socket, and a socket bonus of +3 Critical Strike Rating, that warrior has to decide if socketing less-than-ideal gems into the Yellow and Blue socket to match the socket colors is worth it to unlock that +3 Critical Strike Rating socket bonus OR if they just want to stack 3 +Strength gems and call it a day.

I have two gems I want to socket - I get the menu and have the right gems - when I drag them over they will not drop in the socket - any idea why?
