This guide covers information about Herbalism in Shadowlands. Learn about what herbs are available, where to find them, how to identify them, and what they're used for in Shadowlands professions.
Upcoming Changes to Herbalism in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
is the new Herb you can pick in Zereth Mortis. It's a rare herb and often found in crowded/difficult areas of the zone, rarely out in the open.
Why is Herbalism Useful in Shadowlands?
Herbalism has many applications, and not just collecting materials for your own profession.
, like Mining, gives you a small amount of experience when you gather an herb. This helps leveling up from 50-60 -- every bit counts!
Herbalism creates necessary materials for
and
. If you have one of these professions, Herbalism is the natural pairing for gathering ingredients.
If you don't use them yourself, you can sell herbs on the Auction House. Since these are used to make large numbers of consumables, the demand for herbs is always high.
Herbalism is also useful for completing some quests. There are many quests in Shadowlands that require picking some quest plant, and in many cases, Herbalists can use their herb tracking ability to find these quest items!
Making Gold with Herbalism
Herbalism can be a lucrative gathering profession, since it's used by both Alchemy and Inscription in large quantities. Since Alchemy's potions are consumables, there is always a steady market for herbs. Particularly early on in the expansion when crafters are eager to level up their professions as quickly as possible, some dedicated farming can bring big money while supplies are low and demand is high.
Inscription is also poised to be in big demand in Shadowlands for making the Optional Reagents needed to increase iLevel on crafted gear, so they will also need massive amounts of herbs to fill the demand. Gold farming possibilities are bright for Herbalists!
Learning Shadowlands Herbalism

goes from 1-150.
Shadowlands Herbalism Equipment
You can use any existing items for Herbalism in Shadowlands, or none at all. There are two items worth mentioning:
is a Glove Enchant made by Enchanters that increases gathering speed for Herbalism, Skinning, and Mining. This is a very low level enchant in Shadowlands, and since the components are inexpensive, likely you will find many Enchanters making these for skill.
gives +10 to Herbalism skill and is sold by
in Oribos. It isn't any better than the
you can get in any other expansion, but if you've tossed yours aside because you didn't need it, it's worth picking up again. The extra 10 points of Herbalism means you'll be picking whole herbs ten levels sooner than you would be otherwise, a great boon to herbalism yields.
Shadowlands Herbs
Shadowlands has 6 herbs. Four herbs can only be collected in specific zones, one can be collected in any of the four Covenant zones, and one can be found in those zones plus (rarely) in the Maw.
Zone Specific Herbs
These herbs can only be gathered in one zone and nowhere else.
- gathered only in Bastion.
- gathered only in Maldraxxus
- gathered only in Ardenweald
- gathered only in Revendreth
Rising Glory, Marrowroot, Vigil's Torch, Widowsbloom
Herb Found in All Four Covenant Zones
This herb can be gathered in any of the four Covenant zones. The color of this herb varies depending on the zone it's gathered from, similar to how
was pink in Horde territory and blue in Alliance zones in BfA.
Death Blossom in Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth.
Herb Found in All Five Zones
This herb can be gathered in any of the four Covenant zones, and can rarely be found in the Maw.

Leveling Shadowlands Herbalism
All herbs in Shadowlands begin at the same level, and all but
turn yellow at level 100 (
never turns yellow). It doesn't matter which herbs you focus on, because all will give the same skill level.
As far as ratios of
to the four Covenant zone herbs, on average you'll get about half of each type. Some passes you may get more of one than another, but it averages out.
is the rare herb, and sometimes you'll run into a lot of it, and sometimes you may go around an entire zone and get one or two. The ratios seem to be similar to that of
in Battle for Azeroth.
Overall, herbalism nodes in Shadowlands seem much fewer and farther between than in previous expansions.
Where to Farm Shadowlands Herbs
It doesn't matter which of the four Covenant zones you decide to use for skilling, since no herb gives you any advantages for skilling. That said, some zones are more conducive to herbalism than others.
Unlike previous expansions, there are no apparent terrain preferences for any of the Shadowlands herbs. They all seem to grow more in open areas, and while they may appear in towns or settlements, this is not as common.
Suggested farming routes were created over several runs to determine paths that encountered the fewest concentrations of hostile mobs; this helps speed up the run and let you get to more possible nodes more quickly. Elevation changes were also taken into account. The first two zones are loop routes; the second are point-to-point between a pair of flight points. This takes into account both low hostile mob density and high herb node density. These routes were also chosen to widen your view of potential nodes. Where these diverge from roads, these were chosen to scan large pockets of herbs that aren't easily visible sticking to the road.
Suggested herbing routes don't cover every possible node, and you may find better routes on your own. Each of the presented routes has been tested to give players the best chance to see a large number of possible nodes while following a path that minimizes contact with hostile NPCs. Some of the "best" areas for herbing may be in highly-populated areas where a stealth class such as druid or rogue can pick in relative safety.
Where to Farm
in Bastion
is one of the easiest zones for leveling herbalism. The wide, open fields that are easy to scan, and while there are some hostile mobs, many are Neutral and won't aggro you while you're looking around. While there are elevation changes, these are easy to navigate even without flying, with the map clearly showing how to get up onto various tiers and levels.
Basically, anywhere you see large, open areas on the map with ridge lines, that's where you will find nodes for
,
, and
. However, there are areas in Bastion with larger concentrations of neutral mobs that won't get in your way.
This loop route "starts" at the Aspirant's Rest flight point and takes a quick up-and-back down the road to the Vestibule of Eternity before starting the loop in earnest. If you choose to go clockwise, the entrance to the ridges is along the west side of Aspirant's Rest, between the cliff and the small temple. Proceed up through a small switchback and up onto the main ridge. The first ridge cuts through the center to avoid some larion (plus, there aren't that many herbs on the end of the ridge).
Other than occasional run-ins with foxes and larion, this route avoids all major areas with hostile mobs, and there's plenty of open terrain to pick herbs. This is one of the most fruitful routes in Shadowlands.
Where to Farm
in Maldraxxus
has few truly open areas, many with restrictions created by mountains or slime pools, and a disturbing number of herbalism nodes that appear right at the feet of elite mobs. If you need
you're not going to have a lot of choices available. You can also get occasional
and
and here, but unless you're specifically targeting
, there are easier places to farm.
Still, there is a decent loop route available (actually a double loop), starting at the
Theater of Pain flight point
. The trickiest point is in the slime pools in Glutharn's Decay, the eastern part of the zone, southwest of the House of Rituals. This was unavoidable, but the mobs are generally low level and this route avoids the worst of the elites in the area. There is also good density of
, so even if it's a bother, it's worth the quick side loop.
Stealth is very, very useful here. If you don't have a stealthing herbalist, consider making one. Glutharn's Decay is actually one of the areas that's richest with herb nodes, but it's also densely packed and patrolled by elites.
Where to Farm
in Ardenweald
has many of the same benefits for herbalism as Bastion has: large open areas, many with neutral mobs (more hostile mobs than in Bastion), with minor elevation changes that aren't too difficult to handle.
Curiously, Ardenweald works better with a point-to-point route between
Glitterfall Basin
and
Root-Home
. Dreamsong Fenn has some herbs, but I found it more productive to skip this area and just fly to the other end of the route. Be sure to look around the immediate area of Glitterfall Basin before heading out, as there are often a large number of herbs you can get by dropping down just south of the flight point and circling back up to pick up the route.
Note that there are a few off-road out-and-back routes that check out some pockets of herb nodes, most notably near Hibernal Hollow, and two between Heart of the Forest and Root-Home. Both of these are right on the edge of mob-dense areas, so be sure to note where these are so you don't stumble into unwanted trouble.
Where to Farm
in Revendreth
is urban, which is not good news for herbalists. While there are herb nodes inside these built-up areas, there are also a lot of densely packed mobs to deal with to get to them. There are lots of walls, bridges, and inconvenient elevation changes. Open areas are few and far between, and one area, the Endmire, has a stacking 10% shadow damage debuff it places on you while you spend time in it.
Still, there is a good point-to-point route here between the
Sanctuary of Madness
and
Pridefall Hamlet
flight points. This involves having to get to and use two elevators, one at the southwest of Castle Nathria and one just north of Pridefall Hamlet, but other than that, most elevation changes from here are minor. There is an alternate loop route around Sinfall that is marked with a dotted line; this has a lot of annoying bugs and a few wandering elites, but can be a good source of
.
The trip up to the elevator in Castle Nathria isn't herb-y, but it may be necessary to avoid the gatekeeper mob
who will throw you away from the gate in the wrong direction if you try to pass him and haven't completed the achievement
. This starts with
. Feel free just to head through him if you're already his best bud.
Where to Farm
You will get
as a matter of course while farming other zones for specific herbs. If you're not picky, choose Bastion and Ardenweald for finding
. The other two zones are not nearly so herbalism-friendly.
Where to Farm
is the Anchor Weed of Shadowlands: rare and difficult to find. No Covenant zone spawns more of these than the other. These also don't seem to have discrete spawns of their own, but may be a rare spawn of zone-specific herbs. Any of the zones that produce other herbs can spawn
, so it's best to stick to Bastion and Ardenweald, where the herbalism is easier.
While The Maw also has some few
nodes, the Maw is not a viable farming zone for herbalism. A few nodes have been found there, but it's hardly enough to be worth the bother unless you're going to that area for quests or farming Ven'ari reputation. Those are opportunistic only.
Shadowlands Herbalism World Quests
Each of the four Covenant zones has its own Herbalism World Quests. You must have a Shadowlands Herbalism skill of at least 25 for these to show up. Completing one of these quests rewards +1 Herbalism, experience, and 125 reputation with the local zone faction.
If you are doing the normal storyline, these quests will not be available until World Quests open at level 60. Characters leveling through Threads of Fate with the appropriate skill level can do these starting at level 50, after choosing their Covenant and picking their first questing area.
For this reason, if you are leveling through Threads of Fate, I strongly encourage doing what you need to do to push any Profession skills to 25 as soon as you can to take advantage of these easy skill points, experience, and credit toward your zone completions.

I have found marrowroot pretty easy to farm by simply doing circuits around the Theater of Pain. You can also pick up a decent amount of death blossom and Laestrite/Oxxein in the process.

I cant remember where i saw this online sadly, but some useful information for farming.
doing: /console groundeffectdensity 16
and also going to Settings (Esc > Interface > Display) and turning off Outlines will make spotting nodes infinitely more easy.

One thing I can say about herbalism is that the higher the skill, you can get a chance to gather extra herbs from a NODE

Ok Blizzard this is ridiculous. How do I have over 700 Death Blossoms and barely 100 of everything else doing a complete circuit of all zones to gather with an hour per zone? How did you think this was even a good idea for gathering? It needs to be corrected. The spawn rates of Marrowroot and Widowsbloom is absurd. Rising Glory is pretty good and Vigil's Torch is almost as bad as as the first 2. I would really like a response on the thought process of this from a blue poster. Also, don't get me started on the Shadestone for cauldrons. Pfft one cauldron every 2 days.... seriously?

If you're having trouble with not seeing the nodes, the Avatar of Aliothe WQ (which is literally in the same area) blocks you from seeing them while you're transformed, just fyi!

Anyone know anything about herb gathering while mounted? I used to have this ability on my arms warrior (maybe a garrison herb garden ability? can't remember) but not anymore. I see some players riding around gathering herbs without the auto dismount and I'm wondering if it's a class ability. Can't find any info on Wowhead. Thanks!
