Attributes
Strength
Strength determines the physical power of your character. A high strength improves your attack power. Strength is also a determining factor in how much damage you block if you use a shield. Rogues and hunters only use a partial value of strength to determine their power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Strength is an entirely useless stat for a Shadow
牧师
. Because a Priest will never be utilizing Attack Power, since Priests are Spellcasters, Strength has no benefit whatsoever. To empower Spells to do more Damage, Priests are more interested in Spell Damage from gear, not Attack Power.
Agility
Agility improves your armor rating, your chance to dodge an attack, and your chance to score a critical hit with a melee or ranged attack, thus dealing increased damage. Rogues and Hunters also use agility, in combination with strength, to determine their attack power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Agility, like Strength, is an entirely useless stat for a Shadow
牧师
. Priests are Cloth Wearers and not particularly agile when it comes to Dodging Melee Attacks, so Dodge Rating doesn't do much for the Class. Instead, Priests rely on Spells such as
心灵之火
and
真言术:盾
to survive Melee Attacks, instead of Dodge Rating.
Stamina
Stamina affects your hit points, no matter what class you play. However, characters designed to absorb damage, such as warriors and paladins, gain more benefit from stamina than classes who have other capabilities, such as rogues and druids, who in turn gain more benefit than pure spellcasters, such as mages.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Stamina increases a Player's Health and should be one of the primary Attributes for every Class in the game. In Classic, Health pools are vital to a Player's success in both PvE and PvP. Even though a
牧师
has access to a powerful Buff,
真言术:韧
, Stamina is something a Priest should always be looking for on their Gear.
For a Level 60
牧师
:
1 Stamina = 10 Health
Intellect
Intelligence improves your mana reserves. Intelligence has no bearing on non-spellcasting classes.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Intellect is the most critical Attribute for a Shadow
牧师
. Intellect plays a vital role when it comes to a Player's Mana pool, directly increasing the amount of available Mana, as well as partly playing a role in Spell Critical Strike chance. Clearly, the game manual of 2004 didn't think much of Spellcasters, spending very little time covering Intellect, even calling it "Intelligence" instead of Intellect. For many months in early World of Warcraft history, players weren't sure how Intellect interacted with Spell Critical Strike Chance, going to the forums trying to work together to figure it out.
In a Blue Post on the US General Forums in May of 2005, Blizzard Community Manager Tseric cleared up the details on how Intellect increases Spell Crit Chance, which actually calculates differently based on the Class, explaining why so many people kept getting different results:
Obviously, for melee the numbers are somewhat irrelevant. Sorry that I don't have the exact numbers for Paladins, but the trend is illustrated. Here are some other numbers to that end:
At level 60, these are expected numbers of INT and points per Crit%
Warlock 200 - 60.6
Druid 192 - 60
Priest 250 - 59.5
Shaman 160 - 59.2
Mage 286 - 59.5
For a Level 60
牧师
:
1 Intellect = 15 Mana
59.5 Intellect = 1% Spell Crit Chance
Spirit
Spirit determines the regeneration rate for your health and mana. A high spirit results in much faster regeneration, while a low spirit gives you reduced regeneration.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
The "5 Second Rule" is essentially a mechanic that exists in Classic. Only after a Spellcaster has not spent any Mana for 5 seconds, Spirit Regeneration will turn on, allowing Mana to begin accruing. This is important to remember because things such as
心灵专注
and
自然迅捷
do not break the 5-second rule, because the Spell being cast will cost 0 Mana.
Here are the various formulas for how Spirit will apply to Mana Regeneration. Based on Class:
Priests, Mages: 13 + (spirit / 4) mana per Tick
Druids, Shamans, Paladins, Hunters: 15 + (spirit / 5) mana per Tick
Warlocks: 8 + (spirit / 4) mana per Tick
The reason it is important to understand how Spirit works is because of a compelling Talent in the Discipline tree,
冥想
. Meditation will allow 15% of Spirit's Mana Regeneration to apply while casting as a Shadow
牧师
. And because of the Shadow Priest's rotation, you will be casting nearly all of the time. Casting
精神鞭笞
or casting
心灵震爆
, both will apply Meditation's effect.
For a Level 60
牧师
:
100 Spirit = 38 Mana Per Tick, after 5 Second Rule
100 Spirit = 5 Mana Per Tick, while Casting with
冥想

Spell Hit Rating is capped at 99%. There is always at least 1% chance for a Spell to Resist, no matter what. Because Bosses are "Skull" Level Monsters, they are treated as Level 63 Monsters when calculating Spell Resist Chance. For this reason, it is recommended Spellcasters have
16% Spell Hit Rating
from Talents and Gear. With 16% Spell Hit Rating, the Spell Hit Chance is increased from 83% to 99%, the most you can obtain.
In PvP, Enemy Players are Level 60, which means a Priest only needs 3% Spell Hit Rating to reach the maximum of 99%. It is recommended to have more, however, because the Enemy Player's
Shadow Resistance
from Gear could increase their chance to Resist. So More Spell Hit Rating is always valuable.
For a Level 60
牧师
:
3% Hit Rating = PvP Spell Hit Cap
16% Hit Rating = PvE Spell Hit Cap
MP5 (Mana Per 5 Seconds)
"MP5" is one of the most sought after Equip Bonuses for a Shadow
牧师
to find on Cloth Gear. Because a Shadow Priest is a very Mana intensive Class, MP5 is one of the few ways a Shadow Priest can reliably regenerate Mana during combat. MP5 is a flat bonus that Ticks over time, regenerating Mana based on how much MP5 has been stacked from gear. As previously mentioned, MP5 and
冥想
do not interact in any way. Meditation only applies to Spirit Mana Regeneration.
Stacking MP5 vs. Stacking Damage
This is a complicated issue because many Shadow Priests weigh Spell Damage much higher than MP5. Some Shadow Priests think the only stat that matters (other than Spell Hit) is raw spell damage, and technically, they aren't necessarily wrong. Spell Damage is the only impact to your damage output as a Shadow Priest, but if a Shadow Priest stacks all Raw damage, with low intellect from gear and no MP5, they'll run out of mana
within seconds of a fight.
So how much MP5 you should have on your gear comes down to a single factor,
how fast can your raid kill the boss?
If your raid kills bosses extremely fast, MP5 isn't worth it at all. If your raid kills bosses extremely slowly, you'll need MP5 for sure.
Spell Crit Chance
Whenever a Spell Critically Strikes, the Spell's damage is increased by 150%. Unfortunately,
暗言术:痛
and
精神鞭笞
can not Critically strike at all in Classic, because they do Damage over Time. As a Shadow
牧师
, the only thing that can Critically strike in your rotation is
心灵震爆
, which is one of the primary reasons it is recommended a Shadow
牧师
uses
心灵专注
before casting Mind Blast!
Stat Priority
≥ 16% Spell Hit Rating
Spell Damage
MP5
Intellect
Spirit
16% Spell Hit Rating is the goal. Unfortunately, this isn't realistically obtainable during the first 3 Phases of Classic, but when Zul'Gurub comes out and the
血藤
with it, there is no excuse. You already get 10% Spell Hit from
暗影集中
! From Phase 4 onward, a Shadow Priest should always have 16% Spell Hit Rating in a PvE Raiding environment. This is part of the reason items such as
奈萨里奥之泪
,
奥术精准护腕
, and
专注指环
are so powerful during Phase 3.
As always, Spell Damage and MP5 are you two primary go-to Stats. Spell Damage increases your usefulness in Raids, pumping your damage output and MP5 keeps you from going OOM. Intellect increases your total Mana pool, and more Spirit increases how useful
冥想
is while PvE Raiding. Unfortunately, most of the Gear a Shadow
牧师
will be obtaining has generally low Spirit, and for that reason, Spirit is at the bottom of our Stat Priority.
