Welcome to the Hunter Secret Pet Guide! This guide covers all information on all of the most notable, hard-to-obtain, and most interesting Hunter pet tames in the World of Warcraft. This guide should serve as a hub for Hunters that want to obtain the coolest and most rare pets across Azeroth. Users are encouraged to use the table of contents to quickly navigate to the tames they might be interested in.
New Tames
New tames are Hunter pets that have just been released or are about to be released. Check out the pets below for the latest and greatest pets in Azeroth!

Unique Starter Pets
All new Hunters start with a pet upon creation. This is considered your starter pet. Each hunter race has a specific starting pet. In some cases, these starter pets have completely unique looks that are not obtainable unless you play that specific race. For a complete breakdown of Hunter starting pets, check out the
Starter Pet Chart

Starter Pet FAQ
written by our friends over at

. Below are some of the unique pets obtained via specific races. Finally, these special starter pet looks are only obtainable while you are that specific race. If you race change to a different race, your unique start pet will no longer be available to use, so choose wisely!

Challenge Tames
Challenge tames are tames that require more than just simply walking up and taming the creature. These special tames are often challenging and very difficult to obtain. They are also highly sought after so you may have some competition! Challenge tames may require you to camp spawn points for extended periods of time, perform special quests or use certain abilities in a specific way before you are able to tame them. These creatures are some of the most fun and rewarding pets you can earn. Happy hunting!
With the introduction of Legion, Artifact weapons were introduced and were later destroyed with the launch of Battle for Azeroth. For Beast Mastery Hunters, we got to wield
which gave us our faithful companion
for the entire expansion. After much anticipation, as of patch 8.1.5, our best friend Hati returns! Check out Neryssa's in-depth write up on Hati

:
How to Tame:
(
Spoilers below
!)
When patch 8.1.5 launches, Beast Mastery Hunters will receive a questline from the image of Mimiron in Tradewinds Market or the Great Bazaar. There are no requirements for the quest as long as you're level 120 and you're in the Beast Mastery specialization.
The first quest is
where Mimiron sends you to Storm Peaks, the home of Hati and his brother
. There you will investigate an energy signature that tripped some of his detection relays. Mimiron thinks that this might be Hati and wants to investigate further.
In
you must help and defend Mimiron while he tries to determine where this energy signal is coming from. Your journey takes you to the Temple of Storms to have a chat with Thorim.
After venturing to the Temple of Storms, Mimiron tells you that the energy sources are coming from places where Hati performed great sacrifices. During
, the confused essence of Hati will spawn. Players will need to weaken Hati's essence before using the Thunderspark provided by Mimiron to bind his essence.
Next,
takes us over to Silithus, the place of Hati's final sacrifice. Once again, we must soothe Hati's essence. This time, Thorim shows up to lend a helping hand.
After calming the essences of Hati,
takes us inside of Ulduar where we head to the Spark of Imagination.
Once you arrive, Mimiron begins the ritual to fuse Hati's essences together in
. Afterward, Hati becomes tameable.
After successfully taming Hati, Thorim requests the presence of both you and Hati back at the Temple of Storms in
.
Finally, in
, Thorim tells you that linking the Thunderspark physically to the Temple of Storms allows you to modify the appearance of Hati, allowing you to change Hati to all 5 different variations we were able to obtain during Legion, along with a new one from this questline. It
does not matter
what skins you previously had, you will be able to use all 6 skins.
Hati and New Toys
Hati also comes with some new toys! A vendor in the Temple of Storms named
now sells toys that specifically interact with Hati.

Feed Hati a special treat, healing a small amount of damage. Sometimes, Hati may become too excited and viciously lick your face, dealing Nature damage. (1 Min Cooldown)

Cave Entrance
Mechanical tiger
s are the newest
Hunter pet added in Battle for Azeroth. Sabertrons come in five different colors: copper, gold, green, orange and red colors. Unfortunately, only the red color Sabertron is readily available. The other colors are only available when the
world quest is active. The color of the Sabertron available through the world quest is random every time the world quest pops up.
How to Tame:
Sabertron is located inside a cave on the largest island off the coast of Stormsong Valley (cave entrance is at 35, 32.7).
Inside is a Sabertron of each color but they will be inactive at first. In order to activate one and make it tameable, you must kill the
inside the cave. Once you kill the technician, he activates Sabertron as he dies. You can tame it from there with no special tricks (other than worrying about others trying to kill it for the quest).
By default, the technician will always activate the red Sabertron (whenever there is no Sabertron world quest active).
When the
world quest is active, the technician will activate a random color of Sabertron other than red. This color will remain the same for the whole time the world quest is active on that day. At this point, it is not known if the colors will be on a rotation or be truly random.
Killing all 5 colors also grants the
achievement, so be sure to do this world quest every time it pops up if you're interested in that.

Pantheras were introduced in Legion as a new challenge tame, originally discovered by the Secret Finding Discord. Pantheras come in many colors including blues, greens, pinks, white, yellow, purple and indigo. They can be found across many of the Legion zones. In order to tame a Panthera, players will have to acquire
from Taluk creatures around Legion zones. The most common Talbuk can be found along roads, including
which can be found along the path of the Garothi Obliterator in Krokuun. Unfortunately, the chance to obtain
is extremely low and players will likely have to farm many of them for a single drop. Luckily, they can be bought and sold on the Auction House. You'd think that all you have to do is feed the meat to the Panthera, but there's more to it than that. You can only feed them the meat out of combat, but walking into range puts you in combat! Here's the secret.
How to Tame:
Farm Talbuks around Krokuun and other Legion zones to obtain
.
Find the Panthera of your choice. Use
on it to freeze it in place.
Walk next to the Panthera that's frozen and use
to drop aggro (you can't through the meat in combat).
Throw the meat on the Panthera while you are feigned. Using
makes this a bit easier.
Start taming quickly! The buff from the food is very short and expires quickly.

Karkin Location 1

Lightning Paw

Lightning Paw1
Lightning Paw2
Lightning Paw3
Lightning Paw4
was first introduced in patch 7.1.5. He is the only spirit beast fox and has a unique lighting effect (cannot be seen in the model). Lightning Paw is one of the most difficult pets to obtain due to his multiple spawn locations. In addition to having multiple spawn points, he's hidden! You will not be able to see him out in the open.
Tips to Taming:
In each of the above locations, creepy eyes will appear in a nearby bush. Lightning Paw is stealthed so you can only reveal him by standing very close to him or by using
. Using
also helps your scope of vision.
Use the macro "/tar Lightning Paw" to target him. If he is nearby, the macro should target him, letting you know his whereabouts.
His spawn locations are completely random, so keep making your rounds between all of the bushes.
His spawn timer is anywhere from 2-12 hours and he can spawn at any of the above locations.

achievement. Loque'nahak is the mate of Har'koa located in Zul'Drak (not tameable). Like many other Spirit Beasts, Loque'nahak has multiple spawn locations, making him very difficult to tame. There is nothing special to taming him with the exception of his multiple spawn points.
Tips to Taming:
Use the macro "/tar Loque" to target him. If he is nearby, the macro should target him, letting you know his whereabouts.
His spawn locations are completely random, so keep making your rounds between all of them.

Gara
Gara is a
introduced in Warlords of Draenor. She is being plagued by the void and it's up to us to save her. To tame her, you must go through an extensive questline and at the end, you'll have a chance to tame her!
How to Tame:
Venture to the Burial fields in
. At the southern end of the field is a grave site with a spirit wolf named Gara. You must be in Beast Mastery spec as you approach her. Doing so will trigger a conversation asking you to scratch her ears. This triggers the next step.
Gara will ask you to retrieve some
s which can be found by killing Mother Om'ra, a rare spawn located on the northern end of the field. Make your way back to Gara with the berries and speak to her again.
Now you'll need to put together a
and place it near Gara at a disturbed grave (which will not appear until after you've created the effigy). Each item needed for the effigy drops from a different mob, and this entails traveling across all of Draenor.

Banthalos
is an owl
introduced in patch 4.2 along with many other challenge tames. Ban'thalos is found flying high above the Sanctuary of Malorne. Unlike most creatures, he flys so high above the ground that you are not able to simply tame him. To tame him, you must aggro him while flying and survive the fall from extreme heights.
How to Tame:
You will only be able to see him if you have completed the quest chain in Mount Hyjal through

His spawn rate is anywhere between 6-17 hours
After aggroing him, use

Skoll
Skoll0
Skoll1
is another
that was introduced in Wrath of the Lich King. He has a unique blue toned color with sparks that flicker around him (not evident from the model). For lore purposes, Skoll is the brother of our favorite pet Hati and son to Fenryr. Similar to Loque'nahak, there is nothing special to taming him other than having multiple possible spawn points.
Tips to Taming:
Use the macro "/tar Skoll" to target him. If he is nearby, the macro should target him, letting you know his whereabouts.
His spawn locations are completely random, so keep making your rounds between all of them.

Dethtilac
Dethtilac1
is one of many rare spiders introduced in patch 4.2 along with many other challenge tames. He has a unique lavender/neon blue skin. Unfortunately, players cannot simply tame him since he is immune to taming until he drops below 20% health. As of Battle for Azeroth, Deth'tilac has been scaled up to level 120, so killing him prematurely is no longer an issue. However, his ability
is still a huge issue. If he casts this on you, it will instantly kill you. It cannot be dodged, blocked or parried.
*As a special note, Deth'tilac is one of the few pets that have a unique attack speed. Most pets have attack speeds and deal damage that balance out (despite having varying speeds and damage), however, Deth'tilac's attack speed is so fast, that at certain Haste levels it can be a DPS loss due to hitting an attack speed floor. I do not recommend actually using him for PvE or PvP content.

The
is a pet version of the raid boss

pet family so you must have learned
or be a Gnome/Goblin to tame him. Players must collect a couple of items throughout Siege of Orgrimmar. Combining these items will summon the Juggernaut, allowing you to tame him. Players have the option of choosing between 4 different color paints prior to summoning the Iron Juggernaut, which determines which color pet you will receive. It comes in grey, teal, green and blue.

Fenryr
is a challenge tame that was added in Legion. Hunters had to clear and kill Fenryr in the Halls of Valor on Mythic difficulty. The catch here is that they had to do this solo. This means that you can not enter the instance with anyone else to help you. In Battle for Azeroth, this feat is fairly simple since we have gained 10 levels and now out gear it, but during Legion, this was a very hard task for most players. I recommend doing this as a Beast Mastery Hunter (although Fenryr is not an exotic beast and can be tamed and used in any spec).
How to Tame:
Travel to the
dungeon in the southeast of
. Enter the instance on Mythic (not heroic, not normal and not in Mythic+).
Killing the trash is optional. You may skip it using
or by using
.
Kill the first boss,
. It is a fairly easy fight. Be sure to use
, keep
rolling. Don't stand in the swirling blades and dodge the waves of lightning breath along with the tornadoes.
Make your way to Fenryr's corridor on the right-hand side. Engage
at his first location. When he reaches 60% health, he will scurry away to the far cave.
Follow Fenryr to the second cave. There he will be licking his wounds. Engage him in combat once more. Use
,
and burn him down as fast as possible. Be sure to use
on the adds as they spawn.
Once you have downed Fenryr, a tameable non-hostile version of him will spawn in the cave! Dismiss your current pet and tame away!

is a rare Quilen located in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. He is one of 9 "trackable" hunter pets introduced in Mists of Pandaria, patch 5.4. The trackable creatures do not show up to everyone. Hunters must find and follow footprints around the zone, which will lead them to the wandering creature. Portent also has very unique colors and multiple color possibilities. Like

Chimaeron is fairly easy to tame, especially once you're above level 100. The only catch is that he is only tameable below 20% health. If you are max level, this might mean taking off a bit of gear to ensure you don't kill him.

You may tame these porcupine Spirit Beasts in blue, red and green colors. Out of all of the
s, the porcupines have one of the quickest spawn timers at around 10-15 min.

Wait, are you or are you not able to change Hati's name? The sentence as written ("Finally, you are able to change Hati's name officially with a Certificate of Ownership, making Hati the first pet with a static name!") is unclear.

Technically, Ghostcrawler does have the unique ability "Nerfbat" which reduces all stats by a percentage, stacking.
This, plus some hard hitting melee atacks were enough to kill undergeared players, as he was imune to frost trap.

All of the Coloured spiders can easily be found in a single cave in Pandaria. For more info look into
this
quest, as it is the only way to access the cave.

Although not a challenge tame, they are unique in appearance:
Stonescale Saurolisk
. These are the only saurolisks in game that have a "rock" or "stone" appearance with moss growing on them to give them a contrast.

Thanks! Haven't hunted rare pets in a while, and thought I give Lightning Paw another try after looking at the guide. Got him within 20min tonight after previously spending hours and hours and hours and hours.... :D

Nice guide, I've spotted one "mistake/typo" though, under Felbound Wolf step 2 reads:
Locate and kill Fel Rangari Anaara. Looting him will give you a Vial of Fel Cleansing
Fel Rangari Anaara is female though so it should read:
Locate and kill Fel Rangari Anaara. Looting her will give you a Vial of Fel Cleansing
With Gara you can kill Mother Om'ra and loot some Shadowberrys at any time, such as when you're on your way to Gara for step 1, thereby saving yourself a little time.
Other challenge tames include both
安卡
and
马格瑞亚
which share a spawn in Mount Hyjal and require you to have completed the quest chain through Aessina's Miracle. For these two you must remove
ALL
of your amour prior to taming as they have
灵魂爪
which does around 5k damage multiplied by 1000% per point of armour!

Ok when you said if you race change from a Allied race you lose the starter pet that is wrong I made a Void Elf then went and stabled my void stalker race changed the elf to a panda and still have the stalker pet it is even said on Petopia race changing doesn't affect the pet.

A note since I main a hunter and I love taming different things but especially love feathermanes...
Feathermanes are
not
exclusive to Beast Masters. I actually have several of these guys as used them on my Marksman. It was noted that during Legion, you could only purchase them as a BM after you completed the quest to learn your class mount. As of BFA, any spec for Hunters can buy and learn this via Tome of the Hybrid Beast. Tome of the Hybrid Beast is a BoA, so once you unlock it on one hunter, you can send multiple copies of the tome to your other hunters.
There are a few feathermanes to note:
- Netherbeak in Azsuna
- Skystormer in Feralas
- Lalathin in The Nighthold
- Varoudnir
- Mavanir

Definitely missing some, like the four spectral tigers. But a good consolidation thing, an easy way to see the unique skins and decide which you want, and directions to get it.

I know it is absolutely clear if you think of it: but getting Hati again you need a free Stable Slot. Yeah, that should be clear, but just to mention it and to avoid a long getting out and in again to the questline ;)

Just wanted to clear up, Portent wasn't added in 5.4, I have distinct memories (and I believe screenshots) of tracking him in the Pre-Ruined Vale.
