One of the most important things every hero needs is a trusty steed. This guide walks you through the basics of Mount ownership, including function, acquisition and operation. Whether you are brand new to
World of Warcraft
, or a player coming back after a long break, this guide will help you sort out the where, when, whys, and hows of your mounts, and introduce you to the new herd that awaits you in
Shadowlands
.
What are Mounts?
When you are playing World of Warcraft, your character jogs around from place to place as you move it. Sometimes, especially when you are switching to a new questing area (Quest Hub), that can mean that your poor character is in for quite a long run. Once you have visited a few Quest Hubs you will open up
Flight Points
that allow you to travel between them much more quickly. Flight Points are set though, and don't usually solve the issue of getting to a new Quest Hub or a remote quest, or even just exploring. This is where mounts come in. You can buy yourself a trusty steed to increase your movement speed. Eventually you will be able to use your mounts to fly which gets you around even faster.
Most mounts are account-wide, meaning that if you acquire them on one character, your other characters can use them. Some mounts are Class, Race, or Faction specific, meaning that while you own them account-wide, only your characters that meet the correct criteria can use them.
Most mounts can only be used outside, meaning that if you enter a building while mounted, you will likely be dismounted. Check your mount icon: if it is dimmed, you can't mount. There are also certain zones that do not allow riding and some that allow riding but do not allow flying.
Types of Mount
There are three main types of Mount in World of Warcraft:
Ground Mounts
: Ground Mounts are likely the first type of mount that you will encounter. They are the base model with very few options. You can ride them on the ground. If you ride them into the water, they will slow down, but you will stay mounted. If you ride them into an indoor area, or an area where riding is prohibited, you will be dismounted. You can perform some actions, such as talking to quest givers, while mounted. Other actions, such as fighting or gathering, will dismount you.
Flying Mounts
: Flying Mounts serve as Ground Mounts, but can also fly in areas that allow flying. Apart from adding up and down to your available directions, basic Flying Mounts behave exactly like Ground Mounts. Beware, if you are dismounted while flying, you could fall to your death.
Underwater Mounts
: The third main mount type is the Underwater Mount. The Underwater Mount can only be used while you are underwater. Breaching the surface, or riding out of the water will dismount you. As you might expect, Underwater Mounts increase your swim speed, and are otherwise bound to the basic mount rules regarding indoor locations and interactions.
There are multiple sub types of mount. Each type sub type is one of the main three types, but with an added utility or restriction.
Passenger Mounts
: These Mounts allow more than one person to be mounted on them at a time. Some have extra saddle space, and others transform the initiating player into a mount who can then be ridden by a party member. The person who activates the mount has full control over steering.
Vendor Mounts
: Vendor Mounts are mounts with built in passengers with whom you can interact to perform certain actions such as buying, selling, repair, and more. Often the rider can dismount these passengers, allowing party members to occupy the passenger spaces and turning the mount into a Passenger Mount.
Class Mounts
: Class Mounts are mounts that are only usable by members of the appropriate Class. Several Classes have a mount as a Class perk or ability. All classes have at least one Class Mount that can be acquired through questing.
Faction Mounts
: Faction Mounts are mounts that are only usable by members of the appropriate Faction, ie. you can only use them if you are on either an Alliance or Horde character depending on the mount. Often, if there is a mount for one faction there is an automatic equivalent version that is learned for the other faction, but not always.
Chauffeured Mounts
: The Chauffeured Mounts are very special mounts. There are only two of them, and they are the only mounts that can be used by characters below Level 10.
代驾型机械路霸
is only usable by Horde characters, and
代驾型摩托
is only usable by Alliance characters. Unlocking one of them will unlock both for your account. The Chauffeured Mounts are a reward for the Achievement
传家宝收藏家
which which is awarded for acquiring 35 Heirloom Items. For more information about Heirlooms, check out our Heirloom Guide.

Learning to Ride
As with many abilities in WoW, learning to ride, or to use a mount, is a skill. When you reach Level 10, you can talk to a Riding Trainer and buy
初级骑术
which allows you to use a Ground Mount to increase your movement speed by 60%, or an Underwater Mount to increase your swim speed. As you level up you will be able to return to any Riding Trainer and upgrade your riding to increase your ground speed.
When you reach Level 30, a Flying Trainer will happily take your gold in return for the ability to use Flying Mounts. The world will open up for you! Flying in some zones requires
Pathfinder
, which is an additional flying skill that you unlock through exploration and questing in the associated zones.
Note that using the Chauffeured Mounts does not require any training.

Acquiring Your Mount
There are many ways to acquire mounts. Your first mount, like many others, will likely be bought with gold from a vendor. Mounts can also be earned as a Class perk, from Achievements, bought in the WoW Store, looted from killing (usually) rare mobs, and more. Some mounts are bind on pickup, meaning that when you get them they are yours, while others are bind on use, meaning that you can sell or gift them to other players, or sell them on the Auction House. Of course this also means that you can buy those Mounts on the Auction House for gold.
Racial Mounts
Each playable Race has a
Racial Mount
. Your Racial Mount is often your quickest, easiest, and most economical option when starting out. Initially, you can only buy a Racial Mount that conforms to your race. Later, as you gain reputation with other groups, you'll be able to buy their mounts too.
Perhaps not surprisingly, Flying Trainers and Mount Vendors often hang out close to one another. There is one of each available in the end areas of each Racial Starting Experience so they can easily be found when you reach Level 10.

Class Mounts
A few Classes are lucky enough to have a Mount included as part of their Class. Paladins, Warlocks, and Death Knights all get a Ground Mount automatically at Level 10. Druids can transform into Mount forms using
旅行形态
. They can transform into a Ground or Underwater Mount form at Level 10, and a Flying Mount Form at Level 30. Note that these classes still need to learn the Riding ability, they just don't have to buy a mount out of the gate.
There is also a Glyph which allows the Druid Stag Form Ground Mount to become a Passenger Mount and carry a party member on their back. Monks get a spell that mimics a Flying Mount,
禅意飞行
, but although it does grant increased speed, it is not as fast.

Mount Collection Interface
Once you have learned to ride and purchased (or earned) your Mount, it will either be auto learned, meaning as soon as you pay for it, is added to your
Mount Collection
, or it will show up as a token in your bag. You can right click on the token to add your mount to your Mount Collection.
To access your Mount Collection, click the
Collections
button on your ActionBars. You can also press SHIFT-P for quick access.
This will open up your
Collections Interface
. If it isn't already selected, select the
Mounts
tab at the bottom left of the window. This opens up your
Mount Collection Interface
.

To mount, you can select the mount that you want to ride, and then click the red
Mount
button. This will mount you on your steed, add an icon representing your Mount to your Buffs next to your mini-map, and change the Mount button into a
Dismount
button. You can close the window and ride around. To dismount, you can reopen the window and click Dismount, but there is an easier way to do this: you can drag the icon of your preferred mount to your
ActionBars
. Then, to mount, all you need to do is click that icon. Clicking it a second time will dismount you. You can also dismount by right clicking on the icon in your Buffs. Performing some actions or riding into a non-riding area will dismount you, as will some enemy abilities if you are attacked while mounted.
The Mounts Interface allows you to scroll through your Mounts Collection, sort them by various filters, search for a particular mount, and see the mount model, flavor text, and where the mount was or can be acquired. Right clicking on the mount's name in the list opens a drop-down which allows you yet another way to dismount, and the ability to set the mount as a
Favorite
. You can have as many Favorite Mounts as you like, and by default they will be listed at the top of your Mount list. Favoriting Mounts also allows use of the
Summon Random Favorite Mount
button. You can click this in situ or drag the button to your ActionBars; it works just like the Mount icon, but it will summon a random Mount, appropriate to the area, from your Favorites.
Mount Abilities and Equipment
There are various ways of modifying the way you interact with the environment while mounted. Some professions can make items that give you an hour or more
Mount Buff
that allows such conveniences as being able to pick herbs or mine ore without dismounting. Once you reach Level 40, you will be able to use
Mount Equipment
which allows a single permanent convenience such as Water-walking, which allows you to ride over the surface of water. There are other buffs to riding that you will discover; in Nazjatar, for example, you can buy a
发芽的深海珊瑚
which allows you to ride Underwater Mounts while not underwater in that zone only.

If you want to add all mounts from the opposing faction to your Mount Journal in order to increase your collection you will find out, that you can't send gold to your characters of the opposing faction. So in order to be able to buy the mounts (you need approximately 35g) I recommend to look for an easy daily quest in Stormwind (location that you travel to using the hearthstone on your class trial character). I did the Windswept Ballon quest and recieved 22-12-80g for it, which was enough with selling all the gear to buy all the mounts I needed.
