Welcome to Wowhead's guide to Adapting to Battle for Azeroth's pre-patch guide as a Retribution Paladin. Patch 8.0 brings a lot of changes from BFA to the world of Azeroth and this guide is made to make sure you are prepared for all upcoming changes. This guide gives you an overview of all the changes happening with patch 8.0 for Retribution Paladin.
This pre-patch page is intended to help you know the changes to Retribution Paladin during the pre-patch. Note that during pre-patch, while artifacts
no longer work
, we do not have our
azerite powers
yet, meaning this isn't the final picture for specs in BFA. However, we still retain the powers from legendaries, which will continue working
up to level 115
, creating some interesting situations, as some effects from legendaries
became baseline effects or talents in BFA
.

Core Changes from Legion to BFA
Our Mastery has changed to
精通:圣光之手
. Mastery now increases all Holy damage done without being dependent on the

window.

window has been replaced by a debuff on the target that increases the damage dealt by your next Holy Power spender. The debuff is consumed by the spender.

as we knew it in Legion has been made baseline as

Impact on Gameplay and How to Adapt
After the initial shock over these changes, Retribution feels relatively similar (but much slower) in Battle for Azeroth. Long time players will find, while slower, the spec feels comfortable and familiar. The most tangible feeling of loss will be felt in cleave situations.

no longer hits an additional target. We excel at Single Target damage, fall flat in cleave situations and do moderately well in AE situations.
Dwarf Paladin Mount
Dwarf and Dark Iron Dwarf paladins can now summon rams.
War Mode
Another change from Legion into BFA is the addition of
War Mode
. War Mode is a new World PvP system in the Battle for Azeroth pre-patch, along with the new Honor system and Honor Talents. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in a capital city to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
Changes to the Global Cooldown (GCD) for Ret Paladins
The Global Cooldown, or GCD, is a short lockout period which controls the rate with which abilities can be used; spells that are on the GCD are unable to be used simultaneously, while only abilities off the GCD can be used at the same time or during that lockout period. The global cooldown starts at 1.0 second for energy resource classes, and 1.5 seconds divided by haste for all others.
In Battle for Azeroth, many abilities which used to be off the GCD are now controlled by it. For Ret Paladins the abilities affected by this change are:

Returning Legendary and Artifact Effects
In Battle for Azeroth, many old artifact traits and legendary effects from Legion were turned into talents and baseline abilities. It is known that we will lose our Artifacts
in a future event
. To add to that, Legion legendaries
will stop working at level 116

Gear, Legendaries and Talents in the Prepatch
Gear
Tier 21 set bonuses become significantly less powerful in prepatch. It may be advantageous to drop Tier 21 set bonuses if you have higher item level pieces. As always run a sim to double check.
Our basic stat priority is Strength>Haste>Critical Strike=Versatility>Mastery.
Keep in mind- prepatch has secondary stats all over the place. Sim yourself for the best idea of what enchants to use. This is especially true for your neck enchant.

Talent Performance Summary
Pre-patch is the perfect time to experiment with different talent builds. Combinations based on Legendaries and Gear are recommended later in this section.
Tier 1

is mostly dominating but

Tier 2

almost always will outperform

but only by a small margin. It's safe to choose either without feeling much of a loss. Some people may see

Tier 21 set bonuses may be dropped for enough item level gain. The following information assumes you drop 2pc and 4pc respectively for 2 average item levels total each time. As always, sim yourself to be sure.

I'm seriously debating on whether or not I should play a different class. Not only did they slow paladins to a crawl, but they took their cleaves, and neutered their AoE capabilities. Dungeon and raid groups are not going to want class combinations that are terrible when it comes to dishing out the most damage in an area. Our class spec went from being like that of a dragon turtle... to just a turtle. This sucks. :(

At "Talent, Legendary and Set-Bonus Combinations" part, the Tier 21 Set bonuses is always 4pc... doesnt make sense. Could you correct it please?

The retribution paladin give shame. Always down his damage and increased the cd. Now, with the sentence that does not last more than 1 blow and does not bounce against the other enemy, the seal is like nothing and the changes made were worse than before.
In the other side, we have fury warrior, rouge and warlock that make a lot of damage and nothing of down his damage and increased the cd. And still so, they want to all make pvp, how ironic.
I think that blizzard want disappear the retribution paladin. Maybe one day, the damage will be balance but I dont think so.

Not sure why I can't reply on ExxorD's comment ... But trying to figure out why he got so many down votes?
He's right ... I have been playing a Ret. Pally since they came out (BC) and ever since they have
ALWAYS
gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to new expansions. Legion they were making a decent comeback ... And then while playing Beta I was sadly disappointed again.
Letting Judgement hit other targets was an awesome ability ... They should
not
have taken that away.
I decided on Pre-Patch day to run ICC and old content is extremely mind boggling hard! On not only my Ret. Pally but also my Rogue. I understand there is going to be a bit of a DPS loss, ok, fine - But this, this is just straight bullsh*t.
Old content, especially the 2nd expansion (WRATH) should not be difficult - Period.
I will always love my Ret. Pally, but seeing how they treat them every time, even the Holy spec got screwed ... Now needing to deal damage in order to heal (not the worst thing in the world as that's a lot like Disc Priest) but it's unnecessary.
I hope come Launch Day they make some serious adjustments, or at the very least, in future patches, reconsider some of these bad moves they are doing.
