What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Best Restoration Druid Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of notable Top Tier, Mid Tier, and Bottom or strictly Situational Tier Major Essences you should consider using when playing a Restoration Druid. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
Keep in mind that each rank of each essence comes from a predetermined source. While the first rank of each essence is intended to be acquired relatively easily, the following ranks are meant to be increasingly time consuming, and many cannot be rushed.

The Major Power allows us to halt our mana regeneration for 8s to stack a % healing increase buff that will persist for an additional 8s for a total of 16s of potential uptime with the latter half of the buff being the highest stacks and most potent.
The Minor Power is an Intellect or Mana proc where mana becomes more favored based on our missing mana.
Effect on Gameplay
Unlike other essences, The Ever-Rising Tide is a % healing increase, the amount of extra healing we get out of it is based on output while the buff is up. This output needs to outweigh the potential healing we lose from losing the 6.4k in mana regeneration while stacking the buff. As such, you'll likely want to use only when you need the extra throughput or when mana is not a limiting factor during an encounter. It becomes significantly easier to overcome this downside with higher ranks of The Ever-Rising Tide.
I generally recommend rank 2 or higher before using The Ever-Rising Tide as your Major Essence.
Ideally, you'll want to use quick single-GCD abilities like

to stack the buff 8s prior to a large incoming damage event. At most you'll get 4-6 stacks of the buff if done properly. Then you'll use larger healing abilities like

once the damage occurs to maximize your throughput while the buff is at its peak stack count.

Use on: Encounters where you can leverage additional mana to increase your throughput or longer encounters where mana is significantly constrained.
The Major Power allows us to increase our mana regeneration by 100% for 12-15s and gain a large amount of leech at higher ranks. This mana regeneration is roughly an extra 9,600-12k mana every 2 mins. While this may not seem like much that's roughly an extra mana pot every 2 mins and is nothing to scoff at.
The Minor Power is a chance to refund 50% of the mana spent on spells, a small self-heal, and at later ranks gain moderate versatility whenever we get this refund. During testing this was roughly 25-40k mana over the course of a 6-min encounter which is exceptional.
Effect on Gameplay
While the numbers on this essence are great, the gameplay is rather stagnant. As long as you're activating the major power as soon as you can use the extra mana and then on cooldown thereafter, you're maximizing this essence. Fights where mana is not a limiting factor will see limited benefits from this essence. Avoid in Mythic+.

Use on: Encounters that require additional raid cooldowns or large burst damage events that can be difficult to survive without a defensive cooldown.
Channeling the Major Power causes us to send out 12 protective spheres over 12 seconds that when picked up by an ally will grant them a moderate shield. At higher ranks we also gain an absorb for each shield and a small heal is added.
The Minor Power grants allies within 15yds a small stacking absorb every 10 seconds as well as 10 Corruption Resistance to the Essence user. At higher ranks the absorbs can stack higher and the absorbs grant 3% damage reduction.
Effect on Gameplay
Ideally, you'll want to use this Major Essence prior to a large damaging event to ensure that players have ample time to pick up the spheres to gain the absorb and damage reduction and all of the absorb is consumed by the event.
Similarly to
生命缚誓者之祈
, the numbers on this essence aren't spectacular but they're solid and can help to raise a players effective health on demand albeit only every 3 mins. Additionally, it's not very difficult to get near full value out of this Major Essence because it's an absorb.

Ideally, you'll want to use this Major Essence when a single target has taken or is taking significant amounts of damage. It's rare if this scenario occurs in raid, but will frequently happen throughout Mythic+. Should be quite competitive with other top tier healing Major Essences in M+.

The Major Power allows us to plant a large number of

divided among allies within 30yds every 2.5 mins. At higher ranks we get more seeds, the seeds apply a minor HoT, and unburst seeds will reduce the cooldown of the Major Essence.
The Minor Power is a chance for our heals to implant a seed at roughly 15 rppm. At higher ranks the seeds last longer, apply a short duration HoT, and reduce the cooldown of the Major Essence if they don't burst.
Effect on Gameplay
Ideally, you'll want to use this Major Essence just prior to a large damaging event to ensure that all the

burst gaining full value. If you have the additional HoT unlocked at Rank 3, you can use this within 15s of the damaging event to gain some additional healing from the HoT.
The numbers on this one aren't spectacular but they're solid in the niche that this Major Essence fills. Additionally, it's not very difficult to get near full value out of this Major Essence by simply putting this before a moderate to major raid wide healing event. With it being relatively easy to farm the Rank 4 of this essence if you're able to complete Level 15 M+ dungeons the first week of season 3, this should be highly considered as a Major Essence option till higher ranks of more powerful essences can be farmed up.

How good this essence is will be entirely dependent on how well you're able to benefit from other players using this essence. If no one else is running this essence or you're required to spread for a particular encounter, then the gains are marginal at best because the only

s that spawn will be from you. If you're able to stack and multiple players are running the essence, you could potentially have a very high uptime on a 4 stack buff of

. If you're able to use this on cooldown you'll see a 30% uptime on the 300% primary buff. This essence will be only Mid Tier with very little support from allies, but when played around by a large number of players it can move into a Top Tier Essence. Think of this like

where instead of costing mana regeneration the downside is precise positioning and working with your allies.
Dungeons or encounters where you're frequently moving a lot will cause this to have significantly reduced value as well.

The Minor Power reduces the cooldown of

by 21% (roughly 2mins 22s cooldown or 1min 34s cooldown with
平常心
@

level 70). Higher ranks add a 5% self-heal when
宁静
procs or is used and a static versatility increase.
Effect on Gameplay
Because this Major Essence is entirely passive, there's almost no interaction. The 4s
宁静
HoT means you'll receive a small mastery healing increase during the proc, but that won't dramatically affect your gameplay.
The numbers on this one are exceptional, but the practicality of this is questionable; the healing you get from a extra
宁静
ticks is impressive and if you can fit in an additional
宁静
over the course of the encounter it'll be great. The problem with this essence is entirely with how live play actually works out. The scenarios and encounters where completely random
宁静
ticks are fully effective generally don't exist. It's rare if you'll be able to fully utilize the cooldown reduction as frequently raid cooldowns like
宁静
are held to align with high damage intake.
In the scenario where you can fully utilize the random procs, you'll see this perform quite well, but those circumstances will be rare.

The Major Power allows us to replicate the currently slotted active Major Essence of another player for 15s at a similar rank. The Major Essence will have a 50% longer cooldown. Higher ranks increase the rank of the essence replicated and reduce the cooldown up to 30%.
The Minor Power grants minor intellect for 20s whenever any ally within 40yds uses an Azerite Essense as well as 10 Corruption Resistance. At higher ranks, the intellect increases, haste is additionally granted, and the user of the Azerite Essence also gets a small haste buff.
Effect on Gameplay
This Major Essence is entirely about flexilbility. While we're traditionally limited to only healer-specific essence,
无形虚空
allows healers to utilize DPS or Tank specific essence albeit at an increased cooldown. Steal
虚无粹源
to absorb a huge magic damage ability or take
聚焦之虹的精华
to absolutely obliterate a pack of enemies in Mythic+. The possibilities are limitless so long as one of your allies is using that Major Essence.
The opportunities within our role are somewhat more limited. While it still gives us the flexibility of using the essences of our healer allies, the increased cooldown typically means it's best to just use the essence ourselves instead of relying on the
无形虚空
.
As for the Minor Essence, the small intellect and haste buff isn't great. Additionally, getting 100% uptime on this buff is difficult even inside a raid where players tend to use Essences with longer cooldowns. The true power of this minor essence is the Corruption Resistance allowing you to potentially use even more corrupted gear, but I'd generally recommend using either

or

for their corruption resistance before
无形虚空
minor. If you need all 30 corruption resistance then this could work for you.

The Major Power allows us to tap into the overhealing stored in our well to heal an ally at an amplified amount every 15s. At higher ranks the heal is amplified by a larger percentage and only releases the amount required to fully heal the target.
The Minor Power stores 15% of our overhealing in a well that when we heal low health targets will instantly heal them for an additional amount. At higher ranks the low health threshold moves from 40% health to 50% and the well charges faster when depleted or extremely low.
Effect on Gameplay
The essence allows us to leverage some of our overhealing into potentially meaningful throughput. Essentially every 15s you'll target a damaged ally and heal them with any healing stored in your well amplified by up to 50%.
While this seems like an excellent way to add additional single target healing to your toolkit the problem comes from the interaction between the Major and Minor essence and essentially the math. If we overheal for roughly 30-35% and we store 15% of that healing it means that the minor essence alone is about a 5% healing increase. If we efficiently use all the healing we can store in the well by just using the minor essence, then the maximum gain by using the Major portion of the essence is at best 50% more or 2.5% healing increase. Unfortunately, a 2.5% healing increase is quite small for a Major essence.

Use on: Encounters where you'd also like to contribute damage. Encounters with a decent single-target healing requirement on the same player like Mythic+.
The Major Power allows us to deal minor fire damage to an enemy or minorly heal a target. Each subsequent cast on the same target increases the damage or healing by 100%. At higher ranks, an additional DoT or HoT is applied for 75% of the damage or healing value. At rank 3, the ability will gain an additional charge.
The Minor Power grants our abilities a chance to apply a short DoT to enemies or HoT to allies. At higher ranks the damage/healing increases and can stack up to 3 times.
Effect on Gameplay
This Major Essence is one of the few damage increasing essences available to healers. As such, when looking to do damage it's hard to beat this essence. For the healing component, it's generally okay but nothing too special in terms of raw throughput increase. Because this is one of the first essences you'll acquire, you'll likely use it till you find something better.
The Minor Essence is less than great in terms of raw healing throughput. You'll find much better out there, but it can contribute some damage when you're focusing on that aspect.

The Major Power allows us to heal a single target by siphoning health from the highest health target(s) within 30 yds over 6s every 1 minute. At higher ranks the siphon becomes more powerful and the siphon can jump to the lowest health target once the original target hits max health.
The Minor Power is a chance for our heals to proc a one time hit of the health siphon. At higher ranks the siphon becomes stronger and leaves a shield on the siphoned target.
Effect on Gameplay
This essence is quite interesting in design. Essentially it can spread out single target damage across multiple players. The problem with this one is that the overall net healing increase is negligible. The healing gained by the target comes directly from the damage taken by another player. The shield granted at higher ranks mitigates this downside slightly, but this essence is generally outclassed by the similar essence Well of Existence.

The Major Power grants us the

ability outside of warmode and PvP. Higher ranks increase the defensive versatility benefit when stunned and allow us to gain stacks of strife when crowd controlling an enemy as well as doubling the strife versatility for 5s.
The Minor Power grants our abilities a chance to proc a stacking minor versatility buff for 8s. At higher ranks the buff duration increases to 14s and stacks up to 8 times.
Effect on Gameplay

for PvE Restoration Druids is generally just not cost effective. At 6k mana you're comparing the throughput to a

and it's just not comparable. As long as you're staying up on your tank healing, there are better Major Essences.

The Major Power allows us to place an absorb on an ally that absorbs ~300k healing and ~300k damage. After 4s, the damage and healing is dealt to the target over 10s. Higher ranks increased the duration to 4s and reduce the damage by 20%
The Minor Power gives our heals a chance to grant the target of the heals a moderate amount of haste (roughly 10rppm) for 6s. Higher ranks increase the duration to 8s and grant a similar amount of the tertiary speed.
Effect on Gameplay
This Major Essence is entirely about having a player survive a large amount of incoming damage and less about increasing throughput. The player taking the damage will still take nearly the full amount of damage and healing just over 10s which is much easier to heal and survive. As such this essence is relegated to mostly niche. In the circumstances where it can mean life or death for a tank, it'll be invaluable, but in general there will be better Major Essences to use.
As for the Minor Essence, at 10rppm it's about as good as having that haste on one target at all times which in the grand scheme is very minor when averaged across the raid.

The Major Power allows us to place a beacon at a targeted location that after 4s will relocate us to that beacon and deal a small amount of AoE damage. At higher ranks the delay is reduced to 2s and we gain a 10% damage reduction for 10s after relocating.
The Minor Power grants us a minor primary stat buff for 15s if we move more than 25yd in 4s. At higher ranks the buff duration is increased to 20s we gain a flat 5% movement speed.
Effect on Gameplay
This Major Essence is entirely niche as it does not increase our throughput. If we absolutely need the Major Essence to avoid a mechanic then it could be valuable but will generally be niche as we already have high mobility as Restoration Druids.
As for the Minor Essence, the proc requires so much movement that it can be difficult to maintain maximum uptime. While we can move a great deal without too much loss of throughput, we do still generally prefer to be stationary.
Best Restoration Druid Minor Essences
Three additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. As of 8.3 - Visions of N'Zoth, the third minor essence slot is unlocked at

level 75. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor or how it might interact when using it alongside a different Major Essence. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.

Use on: Encounters where players are frequently dropping below 40-50% health. Exceptional for burst and as an all-purpose Minor Essence.
The Minor Power stores 15% of our overhealing in a well that when we heal low health targets will instantly heal them for an additional amount. At higher ranks the low health threshold moves from 40% health to 50% and the well charges faster when depleted or extremely low.
Effect on Gameplay
The essence allows us to leverage some of our overhealing into potentially meaningful throughput precisely when players need that extra healing, when they're below half health. Because we utilize HoTs, each HoT tick will grant the additional healing as long as the target is below the 50% threshold. As a Restoration Druid we also innately have higher overhealing than many healers so this is a perfection option for us.
If we overheal for roughly 30-35% and we store 15% of that healing it means that the minor essence alone is about a 5% healing increase. That's pretty exceptional for a Minor Essence and should be a near mandatory Minor Essence in most situations. If allies are never dropping below the 50% health threshold then consider other options.

Use on: Encounters requiring additional throughput early in the fight or have high mana constraints late in the encounter.
The Minor Power is an Intellect or Mana proc where mana becomes more favored based on our missing mana.
Effect on Gameplay
The Minor Essence is entirely passive, but will offer you additional healing early in the fight and mana longevity late in an encounter.

Use on: Encounters where the group can be mostly stacked up.
The Minor Power grants allies within 15yds a small stacking absorb every 10 seconds as well as 10 Corruption Resistance to the Essence user. At higher ranks the absorbs can stack higher and the absorbs grant 3% damage reduction.
Effect on Gameplay
As long as decent number of players are within 15 yards of you,

will be a fantastic essence to run not only for the raw throughput but also the damage reduction. Consider other options if you must remain spread out for a large majority of an encounter. Corruption Resistance is a giant bonus making this one amazing when it can be fully utilized and decent otherwise.

Use on: Encounters where you can leverage additional mana to increase your throughput or longer encounters where mana is significantly constrained.
The Minor Power is a chance to refund 50% of the mana spent on spells, a small self-heal, and at later ranks gain moderate versatility whenever we get this refund. During testing this was roughly 25-40k mana over the course of a 6-min encounter which is exceptional.
Effect on Gameplay
Exceptional for extending our mana longevity. Encounters where mana is not a limiting factor will see limited benefits from this essence. Avoid in Mythic+.

The Minor Power grants our abilities a chance to proc a stacking decent versatility buff for 8s. At higher ranks the buff duration increases to 14s and stacks up to 8 times.
Effect on Gameplay
The minor is a simple passive healing increase via a stacking versatility buff. It's not particularly interesting but gets the job done and is fairly easy to keep at maxed stacks for the duration of an encounter. Because it's versatility there is small damage reduction component in the stacking proc.

Effect on Gameplay
It's rare if you'll be able to fully utilize the cooldown reduction as frequently raid cooldowns like
宁静
are held to align with high damage intake. However, in circumstances where you need
宁静
to come off a few seconds earlier this could be invaluable. More often than not you'll be able to fill with another player's cooldowns, but this is a decent option otherwise.

How good this essence is will be entirely dependent on how well you're able to benefit from other players using this essence. If no one else is running this essence or you're required to spread for a particular encounter, then the gains are marginal at best because the only

s that spawn will be from you. If you're able to stack and multiple players are running the essence, you could potentially have a very high uptime on a 4 stack buff of

The Minor Power grants minor intellect for 20s whenever any ally within 40yds uses an Azerite Essense as well as 10 Corruption Resistance. At higher ranks, the intellect increases, haste is additionally granted, and the user of the Azerite Essence also gets a small haste buff.
Effect on Gameplay
The Minor Essence, the small intellect and haste buff isn't great. Additionally, getting 100% uptime on this buff is difficult even inside a raid where players tend to use Essences with longer cooldowns. The true power of this minor essence is the Corruption Resistance allowing you to potentially use even more corrupted gear, but I'd generally recommend using either

or
救世之魂
for their corruption resistance before

minor. If you need all 30 corruption resistance then this could work for you.

Use on: Encounters where you'd also like to contribute damage. General All-Purpose Healing Increase.
The Minor Power grants our abilities a chance to apply a short DoT to enemies or HoT to allies. At higher ranks the damage/healing increases and can stack up to 3 times.
Effect on Gameplay
The Minor Essence is less than great in terms of raw healing throughput. You'll find much better out there, but it can contribute some damage when you're focusing on that aspect.

Use on: Encounters with heavy tank damage or a high single target healing requirement.
The Minor Power is a chance for our heals to proc a one time hit of the health siphon. At higher ranks the siphon becomes stronger and leaves a shield on the siphoned target.
Effect on Gameplay
This essence is quite interesting in design. Essentially it can spread out single target damage across multiple players. The problem with this one is that the overall net healing increase is negligible. The healing gained by the target comes directly from the damage taken by another player. The shield granted at higher ranks mitigates this downside slightly, but this essence is generally outclassed by the similar essence Well of Existence.

Use on: Encounters with significantly high damage requirements.
The Minor Power gives our heals a chance to grant the target of the heals a moderate amount of haste (roughly 10rppm) for 6s. Higher ranks increase the duration to 8s and grant a similar amount of the tertiary speed.
Effect on Gameplay
As for the Minor Essence, at 10rppm it's about as good as having that haste on one target at all times which in the grand scheme is very minor when averaged across the raid. If your raid team absolutely needs the most amount of damage then this Minor Essence can help.

Use on: High mobility encounters.
The Minor Power grants us a minor primary stat buff for 15s if we move more than 25yd in 4s. At higher ranks the buff duration is increased to 20s we gain a flat 5% movement speed.
Effect on Gameplay
The proc requires so much movement that it can be difficult to maintain maximum uptime. While we can move a great deal without too much loss of throughput, we do still generally prefer to be stationary.

It may have been different on PTR, but on live the 100% increase to the effects of Concentrated Flame are a personal buff, not an on-target buff. As such, you do not have to heal the same target with all three charges to get the effect.
