Rotation and Down-ranking
As is the case for most healers, there is not a set "rotation" for you to follow. The general rule to follow is that you should be healing in response to either how much damage has been done, trying to make your healing as efficient as possible. Healing efficiency in WoW Classic is based around not wasting mana, meaning that you want to limit your overhealing as much as possible. If your target is missing 200 health, you should not cast a max rank
圣光术
. Instead, you would want to cast a lower rank of
圣光闪现
to use only the minimum amount of mana required to fully heal the damage. Being a good raid healer is learning to understand how much each of your abilities will heal for and using them accordingly so as not to waste mana. As a general rule, however,
圣光闪现
is a much more efficient spell to cast and should be what you use the majority of the time. Try only to use
圣光术
when you need the quick burst of healing, and the target's health is low enough that you will not end up overhealing the target.
圣光术
and
圣光闪现
are the two spells that you will use for the vast majority of your healing, but you should have a couple of ranks of each on your action bar. Lower ranks of your abilities both cost less mana and do less healing, enabling you to choose the correct spell for any situation. The best ranks to use are Flash of Light rank 4 and rank 6, along with Holy Light rank 6 and rank 9. For each spell, the lower rank is considered the most optimal rank in terms of healing/mana, while the higher rank is the max rank possible, providing the most possible healing for that spell. In order of both mana cost and healing output, Flash of Light (Rank 4) < Flash of Light (Rank 6) < Holy Light (Rank 6) < Holy Light (Rank 9). Learn more about down-ranking in our Down-ranking Guide.
While
圣光术
and
圣光闪现
will make up the core of your healing, you have other spells that you can make use of. Do not forget about the numerous cooldowns that you have available,
清洁术
to remove debuffs from friendly targets, and
神圣震击
to heal while moving.
5-Second Rule
As a mana user, it is crucial to understand the 5-second rule. In WoW Classic, Spirit increases the amount of health and mana that you passively generate. This regeneration happens at full capacity outside of combat but adheres to specific rules inside of combat. Your health will not naturally regenerate while in combat, and your mana will not begin generating until you have not used any mana for 5 seconds. This is what is known as "the 5-second rule." Because of this, if you want to be as efficient with possible as mana, you want to use your spells in bursts, then leaving a longer gap before casting more spells, allowing yourself 5+ seconds to begin regenerating mana. The longer you do not cast anything, the more mana you will regenerate naturally. This becomes less important as you get better gear and stop having as many mana problems but is still important to understand how to effectively generate mana for when you really need it most.
Learning Paladin Spells and Paladin Spell Ranks
Instead of having abilities passively grow in power as your character levels up, in Classic WoW each ability is split out into many ranks. That means that most Paladin abilities will require you to visit a Paladin Trainer in order to learn higher ranks as you level up. Some abilities even have special ranks, only learnable via special tomes found around the world.
As you level to 60 in Classic WoW, new abilities will unlock every two levels. In order to train them, you must visit a
Paladin Class Trainer
, usually located in a major city. In this rotation guide, when talking about abilities, it is usually implied that we’re talking about the max rank unless stated otherwise.
However, in our Classic WoW Spell database, you can browse all available ranks for Paladin abilities, seeing what level you can train each rank at, as well as how much damage each one does.

Buffs
Some of the most critical spells in a Paladin's arsenal are their buffs. There are six possible buffs that a Paladin can use, and each Paladin can only buff 1 per person. This means a raid would require 6 Paladins to make use of all six buffs on all raid members. Most raids will always bring at least 4, but some will choose to bring more due to how powerful all of the Paladin buffs are. These buffs are commonly known as "Blessings," however do note that there are other Paladin spells that are not buffs but still have 'blessing' in their names.
For each Blessing, there is a normal version and a greater version. The greater version will buff that spell on all of the members of the targeted class in a raid, whereas the normal buff will only target the specific person. The greater blessings also last longer, 15 minutes compared to the normal 5 minutes.
强效力量祝福
: Increases the target's attack power. If you are going to be the one using this blessing on people, make sure to have
强化力量祝福
talented for the increased effect. This is a great blessing for any physical damage dealer and for tanks to help their threat generation.
强效智慧祝福
: Increases the target's mana generation rate by a flat amount. This is a great blessing for any caster or mana user in general and will increase the number of spells they can cast before running out of mana.
强效王者祝福
: Increases the target's stats by 10%. This affects all primary stats, such as Strength, Agility, Intellect, Spirit, and Stamina. This is considered to be the single best blessing for most classes since every spec will want at least one of these stats. This also scales the best as you get later into the phases in WoW Classic since the actual amount provided is based on the target's stats. This also is a talented ability, so at least one paladin per raid will need to be talented into it.
强效庇护祝福
: Reduces the target's damage taken by a small amount while also causing them to deal some holy damage each time they block an attack. This is not amazing for most people in the raid but is a very powerful buff for tanks. One paladin in each raid should spec into this to use it on the tanks at least.
强效光明祝福
: Increases the healing the target takes from
圣光闪现
and
圣光术
. This will increase your and your other Paladins' healing done on the target, making it a strong buff during harder content.
强效拯救祝福
: Reduces the threat generated by the target by 30%. This is an incredibly powerful buff and is why many people choose to play Alliance. Threat is a huge concern in WoW Classic, and letting the tank establish and hold threat on enemies is easier said than done. This buff goes a long way towards ensuring that the tank will not lose aggro on an enemy, which means the DPS can worry more about damage and less about doing too much threat.
Auras
Paladins have access to numerous auras and can have no more than one active at all times. Each aura provides a different buff to the Paladin and their party, making it essential to choose what aura you use based on the group you are placed in. Each aura has a 30-yard range, but will only affect you and your party members, not other raid members outside your party.
惩罚光环
: Causes anyone attacked while this aura is active to deal some holy damage back to their attacker. This is useful while leveling and for tanks in raids but is not a major source of damage. This is generally one of the least important of the available auras.
虔诚光环
: Increases the armor of any friendly target in range. A strong defensive aura that should always be used in a tank group unless you need a specific resistance.
专注光环
: Gives a chance that anyone who takes damage while casting will not receive pushback on their cast. If you are placed in a group of casters, you will want to use this aura while also picking up
强化专注光环
in the Protection tree.
暗影抗性光环
: Increases your and your group's shadow resistance. This is a great choice if you are in a raid or dungeon where you will be taking lots of shadow damage.
冰霜抗性光环
: Increases your and your group's frost resistance. This is a great choice if you are in a raid or dungeon where you will be taking lots of frost damage.
火焰抗性光环
: Increases your and your group's fire resistance. This is a great choice if you are in a raid or dungeon where you will be taking lots of fire damage.
Seals
Seals are personal buffs that are available to Paladins. You can only have one seal active at any time, usually choosing from only a couple of the available seals depending on your role. Each seal has two parts to its power: the passive portion and the unleashed portion. To unleash a seal's power, you must have the seal active and use
审判
on an enemy. This will cause a new effect for a shorter amount of time, different based on the seal.
公正圣印
: Your attacks have a chance to stun your target for 2 seconds. If unleashed, the target will be unable to flee for 10 seconds, with your attacks refreshing the 10-second timer. This is less useful as a Holy Paladin, but potentially worth using if you were chasing down a target with a group and needed to prevent them from escaping.
十字军圣印
: Increases your attack power and attack speed, but you deal less damage per attack. Unleashed, this increases the target's Holy damage taken. This is useful while leveling, but useless past that as Holy.
正义圣印
: You deal additional Holy damage per attack, and unleashed will deal a burst of holy damage to the target. Again, this is useful while leveling, but serves no real use at max level for Holy.
智慧圣印
: Your melee attacks have a chance to restore some mana. When unleashed, anyone who attacks the target will have a chance to restore mana when attacking. This will be the seal you use the most at max level, especially in dungeons. The mana returned is valuable to any mana user. In raids, you will not use this as much due to the debuff limit on bosses.
命令圣印
: This is a talented Retribution seal that you will almost certainly not choose to take. It causes your melee attacks to have a chance to proc holy damage, and when unleashed will deal holy damage to the target.
光明圣印
: Your melee attacks will have a chance to heal you, and when unleashed, anyone's melee attacks against the target will have a chance to heal them. This will be your other go-to seal for when you and your group do not need the extra mana.
Healing Spells
圣光术
: A strong, 2.5-second cast heal with a high mana cost. This is your go-to healing spell when you need to heal for a large portion of the target's health at once.
圣光闪现
: A weak, 1.5-second cast heal with a low mana cost. This will be your most used healing ability, and you will spam it whenever anything short of serious damage is going out.
神圣震击
: Your final talent in the holy tree, Holy Shock is a strong instant heal on a 30-second cooldown. It is best to save this for moments where you need to move and heal someone at the same time.
Cooldowns
自由祝福
: Causes the target to be immune to roots and movement impairing effects for 10 seconds. This is a great disengage too,l or for when you need to give a DPS a boost in PvP when they are chasing someone down.
圣佑术
: Causes you to be immune to all physical attacks for 8 seconds. This procs a 1-minute debuff that makes you unable to use
圣佑术
,
保护祝福
, and
圣盾术
during that minute.
保护祝福
: Causes your target to be immune to all physical effects and attacks for 10 seconds. This is perhaps the most powerful cooldown you have that can be cast on someone else. This procs a 1-minute debuff that makes you unable to use
圣佑术
,
保护祝福
, and
圣盾术
during that minute.
神圣干涉
: This causes you to die, but encases a friendly target in a shield that makes them completely invulnerable and unable to move for up to 2 minutes, or until they cancel the buff. This is generally used as a wipe recovery tool in raids.
圣盾术
: Perhaps your most iconic cooldown, Divine Shield encases you in a bubble, making you immune to all damage and effects for 10 seconds. This procs a 1-minute debuff that makes you unable to use
圣佑术
,
保护祝福
, and
圣盾术
during that minute.
圣疗术
: An instant heal that heals the target for your total health pool, but will drain all of your mana. Combined with
强化圣疗术
this is a powerful emergency healing tool, especially for when a tank might be about to die, but you should always use a mana potion afterward since you will be completely out of mana.
牺牲祝福
: Place this on a friendly target, and a small portion of each attack they take for 30 seconds will transfer to you. This is not a great defensive tool, is powerful in PvP when you want to avoid having to sit through control abilities during that time since the damage will break the effects.
神恩术
: Causes your next healing spell to be a guaranteed crit. This is a powerful cooldown both for healing output and for mana conversation. Usually, you will want to save this for when someone is very low and needs a strong heal, but this also ensures you get the mana from the spell back through
启发
.
Other Spells
审判
: Unleashes your current seal on the target. See the seal section above for the possible effects.
纯净术
: Your first version of cleanse that removes a poison or disease effect from a friendly target.
正义之怒
: Increases your threat generation while active.
感知亡灵
: Tracks all nearby Undead on your mini-map while active.
清洁术
: An upgraded version of
纯净术
, this will remove a disease, poison, or magic effect from a friendly target.
超度亡灵
: Fears an Undead target, causing them to flee for 20 seconds.
制裁之锤
: Stuns the target for 6 second. This will be your most used, and your most powerful control tool.
奉献
: A Holy talent that drops a zone on the ground that deals holy damage over time to any enemies inside. This is mainly useful in PvP when you think a stealthed enemy might be nearby.
驱邪术
: Deals a burst of holy damage to an Undead or Demon target.
愤怒之锤
: Deals a burst of holy damage to a target but is only usable when they are below 20% health. This is a great tool for killing low health targets.
神圣之盾
: This is the final talent of the Protection tree, meaning you almost certainly will never use it. If you do get it, this is a decent cooldown for tanking multiple enemies at once.
神圣愤怒
: A short cooldown that causes damage to all nearby Undead and Demon targets.
救赎
: Your resurrection ability that allows you to revive a friendly target while not in combat. This is from a class quest early on and is important to get. Only healers can get resurrection abilities, making it an important tool, especially for raids and dungeons.
召唤军马
: Paladins are able to get this a free mount at level 40, saving them from having to spend gold purchasing it from a vendor and trainer.
召唤战马
: This is the epic mount that Paladins get, but is from a longer class quest that requires some expensive reagents. It is still easier to get than an actual epic mount from a vendor but is not as free as your level 40 mount.
Debuffs in Classic WoW
Be mindful when using Paladin spells that apply debuffs on enemies that they may only have 16 debuffs on them at a time, including raid bosses. With this limitation, usually large raid groups will assign specific players to apply certain debuffs, while others refrain from using them. The whole paragraph regarding "5-Second Rule" shows your inexperience as a paladin. Any paladin that is worth his salt will consume hard enough to never really have to drink (with rotating in mana pots and runes as needed). If they are both on CD, FoL r1 serves as a great way of regenin mana while still keeping tanks topped untill such times as a manadump is required.
If you notice that you struggle with mana a lot then; #1 stop casting holy light, it's bad HPS and bad HPM, just stop doing it. #2 consume harder. Paladins are fairly cheap to consume on regardless, and have decent aoe gold farming capacity. #3 If all of these things fail, then itemize for more spell crit in your gear on fights where you know you spend more mana, but in general as long as you have some world buffs and consume then you don't really need crit gear.
I've literally been in raids where paladins didn't drink a single time, stop talking about 5s rule man... It's just silly, who fact checks these guide-writers?

But what about blessings and judgements, how do those fit into the priority rotation? Are they to be maintained like a dot? I mained holy priest in vanilla, considering holy paladin for classic, but don't know how they work. Is holy pally a melee healer, auto-attacking between heals? or typical heal at range play?

Or you know, they can just know how to play the game and then you don't have to...
#1 priests and druids can drink on EVERY SINGLE pull that doesn't do AoE dmg, you just start drinking prior to pull and let paladins heal (if you need mana). If you don't need man you heal if needed, otherwise smite/starfire.
#2 see my above point regarding paladins and their need to use 5s rule and drinking...

In raids, you will not use this as much due to the debuff limit on bosses.
rly? judgement of wisdom is an essential raid debuff. who the hell writes these guides

Any classic holy paladin that stops casting flash of light for the 5 second rule is not worth a darn. You just need max rank flash of light, then you play whack-a-mole. If for some unknown reason you have mana issues (*maybe* possible if you just hit 60 and go into a raid wearing greens) then you melee the boss with seal of wisdom for a few seconds.
Honestly, one of the best things about a holy paladin is mana efficiency. That being said, using holy light too often or trying to dps (lol) is going to burn through your mana fast. Don't do those two things and you'll be fine.
Druids and Priests
absolutely
have to care about the 5 second rule, but that's a discussion that belongs elsewhere.
