Attributes
Strength
Strength determines the physical power of your character. A high strength improves your attack power. Strength is also a determining factor in how much damage you block if you use a shield. Rogues and hunters only use a partial value of strength to determine their power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Strength is meant to increase the strength of your melee attacks by increasing your attack power. Specifically, one point of Strength gives 2 AP. This is your primary damage stat, and you get more out of each point of Strength through talents like
神圣之力
and buffs like
王者祝福
. This is your best and most important stat.
Agility
Agility improves your armor rating, your chance to dodge an attack, and your chance to score a critical hit with a melee or ranged attack, thus dealing increased damage. Rogues and Hunters also use agility, in combination with strength, to determine their attack power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Critical strike chance is incredibly important to Ret due to the talent
复仇
. Agility's only purpose is to increase your crit chance. Thus Agility and crit should be considered equal, with 20 Agility = 1% crit.
Stamina
Stamina affects your hit points, no matter what class you play. However, characters designed to absorb damage, such as warriors and paladins, gain more benefit from stamina than classes who have other capabilities, such as rogues and druids, who in turn gain more benefit than pure spellcasters, such as mages.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Each point of Stamina increases your max health by 10. While this does not affect your damage done, it is an essential defensive stat. With more health, you can take more damage before dying, which could potentially save your life. While this is not a priority, you do want a decent amount of health to be able to survive.
Intellect
Intelligence improves your mana reserves. Intelligence has no bearing on non-spellcasting classes.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Each point of Intellect increases your max mana by 15. Having a higher mana pool means you can cast more spells before running out of mana, but in general this is not as big of a deal for Ret Paladins in PvE. Some Intellect is fine, but this is not worth stacking, and too much of it will be a waste.
Spirit
Spirit determines the regeneration rate for your health and mana. A high spirit results in much faster regeneration, while a low spirit gives you reduced regeneration.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Spirit increases your health and mana regeneration rates. However, this only applies to out of combat rates, and you will only generate mana passively if you follow the 5-second rule. Spirit is your least important primary stat for PvE and should be avoided on all pieces of gear.
Secondary Stats
Attack Power
Attack power increases your damage dealt with attacks and abilities. This is your primary source of damage, but you will get most of your AP from Strength due to most plate gear having a higher amount of Strength and because your Strength scales better through talents and buffs.
Crit Chance
When a melee hit critically strikes, it does 200% of the usual effect. This is only 150% for spells. Agility will increase your chance to critically strike, but sometimes gear will have additional crit chance, usually an extra 1% chance to crit. Crit chance is very valuable as a Ret Paladin for two reasons. First, crits are larger hits, thus increasing your damage done. Second, crits give you procs of
复仇
, which is a massive damage increase the higher your uptime.
Hit Chance
By default, you have an 8.6% chance to miss with abilities. If you gain this back through hit chance on gear, you will no longer miss. Hit cap is considered to by 9% since you can only get hit chance in increments of 1%. This is a very valuable stat for any damage dealer, Ret Paladins included. You get some hit chance through the talent
精确
, meaning you only need 6% from gear to reach the cap.
Weapon Skill
While seeming relatively basic and boring, this is one of the most powerful modifiers a Player can come across in Classic WoW. Every Weapon Skill you gain over 300 substantially reduces Miss chance, Block chance, Parry, Dodge, while also increasing your chance to Critically Strike!
Each type of weapon, axes, swords, maces, etc, has its separate skill bar to fill. The only way to train Weapon Skill is to use that type of weapon against a target that yields experience or honor. In order to minimize the risk of missing attacks, along with being hit capped, melee classes and hunters must also have their Weapon Skill for their current weapon at its highest value at all times. Failing to do so, or fighting higher-level mobs will cause many of your attacks to fail and increase the punishment from glancing blows.
Every level, a player character can get 5 points in each of their skills, including Weapon Skills and Defense, with a max of 300 points at level 60. NPCs work similarly, however, they aren't limited to level 60, as boss-level enemies are considered 63. Having a weapon skill lower than your enemy's defense by over 10 points will also impact on your chance to hit with skills and abilities.
For every point of Weapon Skill the player has over their Target's Defense Skill, they gain the following:
Chance to
Miss
decreases by 0.04%.
Chance for a
Critical Hit
increases by 0.04%.
Target's chance to
Block
decreases by 0.04%.
Target's chance to (Melee Only)
Parry
decreases by 0.04%.
Target's chance to (Melee Only)
Dodge
decreases by 0.04%.
Mp5
Mp5 refers to "mana per 5 seconds," which is a secondary stat found on some pieces of gear. The mana generation that you get this way occurs during combat as well, making it a great stat for mana gained during a fight. However, this is not important for Ret in general and will not be found on pieces of gear that you will want to use. It is better to downrank spells to lower your mana usage than to get more of this stat.
Spell Power
Spell power increases the damage dealt by spells. Usually, melee DPS would never use this stat, but Ret Paladins are the exception since your spells deal holy damage, which is affected by Spell Power. Your damage spells benefit some from this, making it a damage boost to have. However, similar to Mp5, this is not going to be found on gear that you will want to wear, and you will get more damage from other stats anyways. If you're going to be 100% optimized, however, you can pick up spell damage consumables in addition to melee consumables for extra DPS since they will increase your damage.

Spirit
As stated above, your primary role as a Ret Paladin is to deal damage. Your stats should focus on increasing your damage dealt, with mana and health being a secondary concern. Strength will be your most significant increase to damage dealt due to its high conversion rate to AP. You need to be hit capped to not worry about missing spells (also because it is a large damage increase while not capped), with crit being your next most important stat. Critical hits give you uptime on
复仇
, which is a huge damage increase in addition to crits doing more damage. Hit, Strength, and Crit/Agility should make up the majority of your stats on your gear.
