About the Author
Kelman
is a longtime Warcraft player and fan, following and playing all the Warcraft games for many years. Currently enjoying life as a Mage.
Mages are only capable of filling the role of a damage dealer. Therefore, their stats should prioritize maximizing their damage over everything else.
Attributes
Strength
Strength determines the physical power of your character. A high strength improves your attack power. Strength is also a determining factor in how much damage you block if you use a shield. Rogues and hunters only use a partial value of strength to determine their power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Strength has no real value for Mages. It doesn’t provide any useful stats or effects unless you want to turn into a battle Mage and take people down with your fists. In this case, strength is the way to go.
Agility
Agility improves your armor rating, your chance to dodge an attack, and your chance to score a critical hit with a melee or ranged attack, thus dealing increased damage. Rogues and Hunters also use agility, in combination with strength, to determine their attack power.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Similarly to Strength, Agility doesn’t benefit Mages. It can be useful if you want to take people down with your fists or try to become a ninja. However, it generally won’t give you much notable benefit.
Stamina
Stamina affects your hit points, no matter what class you play. However, characters designed to absorb damage, such as warriors and paladins, gain more benefit from stamina than classes who have other capabilities, such as rogues and druids, who in turn gain more benefit than pure spellcasters, such as mages.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Stamina increases total Health. It is a crucial stat in PvP, as PvP is all about staying alive while defeating your opponents. For Mages, a good balance between Stamina and damage stats is needed to be successful. You can’t defeat your opponents with almost any damage, but at the same time, if it takes just one or two hits to kill you, you will have a tough time.
Meanwhile, in PvE, stamina is relatively useless. A Mage is not supposed to take damage in fights if it’s avoidable, so it’s better to focus on stats to increase damage.
For a Level 60
法师
:
1 Stamina = 10 Health
Intellect
Intelligence improves your mana reserves. Intelligence has no bearing on non-spellcasting classes.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Intellect is the primary stat for Mages. Each point of Intellect grants increased Critical Strike Chance and Mana. This isn’t the most important stat for Mages, however, as bonus Spell Damage provides a better damage boost.
For a Level 60
法师
:
1 Intelligence = 15 Mana
59.5 Intelligence = 1% increased Critical Strike Chance
Spirit
Spirit determines the regeneration rate for your health and mana. A high spirit results in much faster regeneration, while a low spirit gives you reduced regeneration.
- World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004
Spirit increases Health and Mana regeneration. This stat is helpful but not a huge priority. Mages won’t run out of Mana very often in raids, and even if they do, they can make use of numerous Mana regeneration items and spells to recover Mana. Spirit doesn’t boost damage, so it is not worth investing in for Mages.
It is useful while leveling to reduce downtime, however.
Secondary Stats
Hit Rating
Hit Rating determines how often spells hit the target. In a spell casters case, this can also be looked at as reducing the targets chance to resist spells (mainly in the Elemental Precision talent). While Hit Rating can be increased to almost guarantee all spells are successful. It is important to note that all spellcasters will always have a 1% chance to have their spells resisted.
For a Level 60
法师
:
3% Hit Rating = PvP Hit Cap
16% Hit Rating = PvE Hit Cap
Spell Damage
Spell Damage is the most important stat for increasing damage. This stat can be fairly complicated, as it doesn’t increase the damage of spells by the same amount for each spell. While the exact amount can be figured out through calculations called “spell-coefficient”, the most important values are:
寒冰箭
: Damage is increased by 81.4% of bonus Spell Damage
火球术
: Damage is increased by 100% of bonus Spell Damage
灼烧
: Damage is increased by 42.8% of bonus Spell Damage
Increased Spell Damage is split into two categories: Overall Spell Damage and magic school damage. Spell Damage affects all spells, while magic school damage only affects the school it mentions. The beneficial Spell Damage stats for Mages are Spell Damage, Frost damage, and Fire damage.
Critical Strike Chance
Critical Strike Chance is a very valuable stat for Mages. The higher the Critical Strike Chance, the higher the overall DPS. This stat is very beneficial for both Fire and Frost Mages and is sometimes valued over Spell Damage and Hit Rating, depending on the Mage and situation.
Overall, Critical Strike Chance is a lot more valuable on a Fire Mage, mainly due to the
点燃
talent. This talent provides a considerable damage increase to a Fire Mage and is the reason that you will sometimes see Fire Mages gathering up as much Critical Strike Chance as possible.
Meanwhile, Frost Mages also benefit from Critical Strike Chance through the
寒冰碎片
talent. However, this is not as impactful as
点燃
.
Spell Penetration
Spell Penetration is mainly a stat used for PvP. This reduces enemies spell resistances, meaning they increased damage from spells. In PvP, this is used to increase spell damage against other players, especially in group PvP, where they will have access to buffs like Frost Resistance Aura or Mark of the Wild.
In PvE, some monsters and all end game bosses have some resistance to all schools of magic. While reducing this is helpful, it is generally not as beneficial as other stats for Mages, and should not be a priority.

Fire Mage

It is important to note that this is a general guide and itemization for Mages depends mainly on their current gear and situation. While Hit Rating is vital as you need to hit your target to do damage, sometimes it is worth trading off a few Hit Rating percentages for extra Critical Strike Chance or Spell Damage.
Overall, I would say that it is best to focus on reaching the 16% Hit cap first, as your increased Spell Damage or Critical Strike Chance doesn’t matter at all if you can’t hit your target. It is common, however, for Mages to skip out on some Hit Rating for extra damage and still do fantastic damage with 13-15% Hit Rating.
It comes down to what you want to prioritize and focus on. Although, as long as you remember to focus on your three most important stats, Hit Rating, Spell Damage, and Critical Strike Chance, you will do well.
Keep in mind that in early phases (before Blackwing Lair) it's impossible to reach Hit Cap, so you should just focus on getting the best stats you can find.

I think it is 59.5 points of Intellect equal 1% chance to crit with spells. Unless they changed something in Classic.

Spirit definitely has value because of Mage Armor, as well as Evocation mechanics. You should mention that in the spirit section.
