High Overlord Varok Saurfang was the racial leader of the Orcs. Younger brother to the legendary Broxigar the Red and esteemed Warrior of the Blackrock Clan, Saurfang was a veteran of all three Wars, as well as the Supreme Commander of the Azeroth Forces during the War of the Shifting Sands.
Saurfang sacrificed himself during the events of Battle for Azeroth as a means to end the Fourth War with as few casualties as possible.
As the first line of defense in Orgrimmar, Saurfang quickly became a meme with how relentlessly he would cleave down Alliance players with his
, to the point of being lauded in-game as the greatest axe-wielding Warrior in all of Azeroth.

Before World of Warcraft
Varok Saurfang was born in Draenor to the Blackrock Clan, the younger brother of Broxigar the Red. 5 years before the opening of the Dark Portal, when Rend Blackhand was named Warchief of the Horde, he named Saurfang, as well as Eitrigg and Orgrim Doomhammer, to act as his lieutenants. Saurfang helped oversee the Horde war operations for the upcoming conflict against the Draenei.
When offered the Blood of Mannoroth, Saurfang drank the blood with conviction, alongside Grommash Hellscream, and led the sacking of Shattrath City. Thanks to the influence of the Blood of Mannoroth, Saurfang was led to murder countless civilians, an act he would regret for the entirety of his life.
Saurfang's mate died around the time of the opening of the Dark Portal. Saurfang promised her that their son, Dranosh Saurfang, was not to be exposed to the Curse of Blood or to the Dark Portal, so he was hidden away with the Mag'har Orcs in Garadar, Nagrand, until he became of age.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I made a promise to his mother before she died; that I would cross the Dark Portal alone - whether I lived or died, my son would be safe. Untainted...
Saurfang followed on that promised and crossed the Dark Portal alone. As a commander of the Blackrock Orcs, Saurfang was unstoppable, never losing in battle until the Horde was cornered at the end of the Second War. During the Third War, Saurfang fought alongside a troll called Hekazi. He also witnessed the fall of Archimonde in the Battle of Mount Hyjal, as part of Thrall's orc camp (
).
After Grom Hellscream sacrificed himself to free the Orcs of the Curse of Blood, Saurfang helped dozens of orcs cope with the atrocities they had committed during that time, although said acts also haunted him for the rest of his existence. Saurfang has since sworn to always act with honor. Although he does not shy away from wars or defending his people whenever necessary, he refuses to outright start wars, and when possible, will attempt to stop warmongering souls to do so.

The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj
During the second War of the Shifting Sands, Saurfang traveled to the front lines of Silithus, and acted as the Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor, the combined forces of the Horde and Alliance fighting against the threat of the Qiraji.
High Overlord Saurfang stands before the Might of Kalimdor.
High Overlord Saurfang yells: I am Saurfang. Brother of Broxigar. You know me to be the Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor. An orc - a true orc warrior - wishes for one thing: To die in the glory of battle against a hated enemy. Some of you have fought in battles. Peace has been with us for many years. Many years we sat idle but many years we battled. In those years - where strife, the land and Legion and Scourge, sacked our homes, killed our families — these insects dwelled beneath us. Beneath our homes — waiting. Waiting to crush the life from our little ones. To slay all in their path. This they do for their god. And for our gods? We defend. We stand. We show that as one. United. We destroy. Their god will fall. To die today, on this field of battle, is to die an orcish death. To die today is to die for our little ones. Our old ones. Our … loved ones. Would any of you deny yourselves such a death? Such an honor?
After the Scarab Wall was opened and C'Thun defeated, it is presumed that the Might of Kalimdor was disbanded, as they never were mentioned or brought up again. However, Saurfang has maintained his respect for the Alliance as a whole.
Wrath of the Lich King
After defending Orgrimmar from the rising threat of the Scourge, Thrall sent Saurfang to Northrend, both to act as the leader of the Kor'kron effort, and as a way to train the youngling warrior Garrosh Hellscream. Saurfang is stationed at the stronghold of Warsong Hold in Borean Tundra, serving as advisor to Garrosh. Worried about Garrosh's constant displays of bloodlust and his experiences from the past, Saurfang attempted to advise caution to Garrosh.
High Overlord Saurfang says: We are surrounded ... Our enemies press in from all sides, young Hellscream. The Scourge descends like locusts from the north. The Alliance holds the only secure shipping lane in this region and even that is at risk of being lost to those dreaded mists. Our only viable port for resupply is held by the Forsaken on the other side of this blasted continent! Anything our zeppelins cannot haul must be brought in by ship and travel the length of Northrend to reach us.
Garrosh Hellscream grunts.
Garrosh Hellscream says: Shipping lanes ... supplies ... You bore me to death! We need nothing more than the warrior spirit of the Horde, Saurfang! Now that we are firmly entrenched in this frozen wasteland, nothing shall stop us!
High Overlord Saurfang says: Siege engines, ammunition, heavy armor ... How do you propose to shatter the walls of Icecrown without those?
Garrosh Hellscream says: Propose? I will show you what I propose!
Garrosh crushes the figures and flag indicating Valiance Keep on the map.
Garrosh Hellscream says: There... Now we now have a shipping lane. And just for good measure...
Garrosh crushes the figures and flag indicating Valgarde and Westguard Keep.
High Overlord Saurfang says: So the prodigal son has spoken! Your father's blood runs strong in you, Hellscream. Impatient as always... Impatient and reckless. You rush headlong into all-out war without a thought of the consequences.
Garrosh Hellscream says: Do not speak to me of consequences, old one.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I drank of the same blood your father did, Garrosh. Mannoroth's cursed venom pumped through my veins as well. I drove my weapons into the bodies and minds of my enemies. And while Grom died a glorious death - freeing us all from the blood curse - he could not wipe away the terrible memory of our past. His act could not erase the horrors we committed.
High Overlord Saurfang says: The winter after the curse was lifted, hundreds of veteran orcs like me were lost to despair. Our minds were finally free, yes... Free to relive all of the unthinkable acts that we had performed under the Legion's influence.
High Overlord Saurfang nods.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I think it was the sounds of the draenei children that unnerved most of them... You never forget... Have you ever been to Jaggedswine Farm? When the swine are of age for the slaughter... It's that sound. The sound of the swine being killed... It resonates the loudest. Those are hard times for us older veterans.
Garrosh Hellscream says: But surely you cannot think that those children were born into innocence? They would have grown up and taken arms against us!
High Overlord Saurfang shakes his head.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I am not speaking solely of the children of our enemies...
High Overlord Saurfang says: I won't let you take us down that dark path again, young Hellscream. I'll kill you myself before that day comes...
Garrosh Hellscream says: How have you managed to survive for so long, Saurfang? Not fallen victim to your own memories?
High Overlord Saurfang says: I don't eat pork...
High Overlord Saurfang spits.
During the Borean Tundra campaign, adventurers are overpowered by a powerful Scourge necromancer, Varidus the Flenser. But just before they are converted into Scourge, Saurfang shows up in disguise and easily dispatches of the necromancer and telling the adventurers to report to Garrosh that it was all their doing (
).
At the Battle of the Wrathgate, his son, Dranosh Saurfang, led the charge against the Lich King on the Horde side and ended up killed by the Lich King before the betrayal by Grand Apothecary Putress. Although there was no body to be found at the Wrathgate, Alexstrasza asked for adventurers to bring Dranosh's shattered armor to Varok (
).
Fall of the Lich King
Varok Saurfang can be found next to Tirion Fordring at Light's Hammer in
, if you're doing the raid on the Horde side. He also commands the Horde gunship
Orgrim's Hammer
, during the Gunship Battle boss encounter in the same raid.
Right after the Gunship Battle, on the Horde side, Varok Saurfang meets his son once more, now known as
, raised as a Death Knight by the Lich King. After Dranosh attempts to persuade Varok to join his side as one of the Lich King's soldiers, Varok comments on how he will finally fulfill the promise he made to keep his son safe from the curse that befell him so long ago.
High Overlord Saurfang yells: Kor'kron, move out! Champions, watch your backs. The Scourge have been...
Deathbringer Saurfang yells: Join me, father. Join me and we will crush this world in the name of the Scourge -- for the glory of the Lich King!
High Overlord Saurfang says: My boy died at the Wrath Gate. I am here only to collect his body.
Deathbringer Saurfang yells: Stubborn and old. What chance do you have? I am stronger, and more powerful than you ever were.
High Overlord Saurfang says: We named him Dranosh. It means "Heart of Draenor" in orcish. I would not let the warlocks take him. My boy would be safe, hidden away by the elders of Garadar.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I made a promise to his mother before she died; that I would cross the Dark Portal alone - whether I lived or died, my son would be safe. Untainted...
High Overlord Saurfang says: Today, I fulfill that promise.
High Overlord Saurfang charges!
Deathbringer Saurfang yells: Pathetic old orc. Come then heroes. Come and face the might of the Scourge!
After Deathbringer Saurfang is defeated, Varok retrieves the body of his son. The outro changes whether you're Alliance or Horde - on the Alliance outro, Muradin Bronzebeard, the commander of the Alliance gunship
Skybreaker
, attempts to stop Varok from claiming Dranosh's corpse. King Varian Wrynn intervened and allowed Varok to retrieve Dranosh's corpse, mentioning that his son deserves a hero's burial because he died a hero's death.
Horde outro:
High Overlord Saurfang coughs.
High Overlord Saurfang weeps over the corpse of his son.
High Overlord Saurfang says: You will have a proper ceremony in Nagrand next to the pyres of your mother and ancestors.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Honor, young heroes... no matter how dire the battle... Never forsake it!
Alliance outro:
Muradin Bronzebeard gasps for air.
Muradin Bronzebeard says: That was Saurfang's boy - the Horde commander at the Wrath Gate. Such a tragic end...
Muradin Bronzebeard says: What in the... There, in the distance!
Muradin Bronzebeard yells: Soldiers, fall in! Looks like the Horde are comin' to take another shot!
Muradin Bronzebeard says: Don't force me hand, orc. We can't let ye pass.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Behind you lies the body of my only son. Nothing will keep me from him.
Muradin Bronzebeard says: I... I can't do it. Get back on yer ship and we'll spare yer life.
King Varian Wrynn says: Stand down, Muradin. Let a grieving father pass.
High Overlord Saurfang says: No'ku kil zil'nok ha tar.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I will not forget this... kindness. I thank you, Highness
King Varian Wrynn says: I... I was not at the Wrath Gate, but the soldiers who survived told me much of what happened. Your son fought with honor. He died a hero's death. He deserves a hero's burial.
Mists of Pandaria
After Icecrown Citadel, Saurfang was mostly absent, staying in Northrend as the leader of the Kor'kron Vanguard. He reappears during the Siege or Orgrimmmar.
Siege of Orgrimmar
During the
, Saurfang and Thrall attempt to enter the Horde capital, Saurfang willing to fulfill the promise he made years before, to stop Garrosh before he went too far. They were both stopped by
, who allowed them to enter the city, but did not guarantee their safety beyond that point.
Saurfang is found in the raid, past Nazgrim's area, gravely wounded. Saurfang laments the fate of Nazgrim, mentioning his fealty to the Warchief.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Ah, more of Vol'jin's revolutionaries. You've made it.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Have you found Thrall? I am badly hurt, he insisted on going ahead alone.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Tell me, how goes the battle up above? What of Nazgrim? Speak to me!
High Overlord Saurfang says: Ah, Nazgrim. A great leader and a fine warrior. He valued his oath to the Warchief more than his life.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I tried to tell him... to tell him that Hellscream betrayed us, cast aside a Warchief's responsibility to his own people. But Nazgrim... too loyal... too proud.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Damn Hellscream. His ambition tore our Horde apart.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Go on, find Thrall. Finish this. I will live.
War Crimes
Saurfang arrived at Garrosh's trial at the Temple of the White Tiger together with Thrall (now known as Go'el) and Eitrigg. He agreed with the Horde leaders to make Baine Bloodhoof Garrosh's defendant.
During the trial, he was called as a witness by Tyrande Whisperwind, who was acting as Garrosh's prosecutor. Saurfang was hailed as a hero by both the Horde and the Alliance. He told the court of his constant conflicts with Garrosh while serving as his superior in Northrend, and his promise to end Garrosh in case he led the Horde to a dark era. This testimony was seen by everyone in the jury as key to prove that Garrosh had gone too far in the eyes of the Orcs.
Despite all that, Saurfang did not agree to execute Garrosh in a death sentence. When asked what appropriate punishment for Garrosh would be, Saurfang mentioned that he loved the Orcs above all reason, and this dedication to his race should earn him a trial in Orcish customs, including a Mak'gora* against Saurfang, to determine if Garrosh was to live or die by his crimes.
* Editor's note: Mak'gora means "duel of honor" in Orcish. Mak'gora is an Orcish custom where an Orc would duel another Orc in a position of leadership. The definition of a Mak'gora is very inconsistent, but it usually involves fighting either to the death or until submission.
Legion
During the Demon Hunter starting quest, it is discovered that Saurfang became the commander of Orgrimmar's defenses (
), and by the time Vol'jin died and Sylvanas took the mantle of Warchief (
), Saurfang became the defacto leader of the Orcs. The PvP achievement to kill the Orgrimmar faction leader was also changed accordingly (
).
During the questline for the acquisition of the Arms Warrior Hidden Artifact appearance,

After the end of the Argus Campaign, when Azerite was discovered off the wound in Silithus, Gallywix mentioning sending his goblin workers to the zone. Saurfang just coldly responded that nothing good ever came off Silithus, remembering his time as a commander for the Might of Kalimdor.
Battle for Azeroth
Saurfang rose to prominence once more in Battle for Azeroth, with his history further developed in Patch 8.1, Tides of Vengeance.
Before the Storm
Following the gathering of the Horde leadership, Orgrimmar was saturated with Alliance spies, and Sylvanas learned to tolerate them. She summoned Saurfang to a very private meeting at Grommash Hold, with her champion Nathanos making sure that this meeting was 100% private.
In this secret meeting, Sylvanas asked Saurfang how would he go about making a plan to sack Stormwind. After evaluating everything he knows about Stormwind and the scenarios with the Horde's current army, he concluded that any attempts to invade the Alliance capital would be tentative at best. After Sylvanas asked to think again on how to create a more elaborate strategy with Stormwind as the final objective, Saurfang asked her why was she so hellbent on going to war against the Alliance.
Sylvanas responded that she believes that, considering all the transgressions of the past, war between the Alliance and the Horde was all but inevitable, and the only way for the Horde to have peace was to dominate the Alliance in a hypothetical war and win on their terms. After Saurfang complained that if that was the case, they should be ready to defend instead of instigating all-out war, Sylvanas correctly pointed out that while Stormwind seemed to be impenetrable, Orgrimmar definitely was not, as shown by the Siege of Orgrimmar. The Horde was in a far more delicate situation than the Alliance, were they to enter in conflict.
With the discovery of Azerite and how it empowers an army as a whole, Sylvanas would propose taking every possible opportunity to ensure victory in case a war was to happen. Saurfang agreed with her reasoning, but could not fathom an effective strategy to sack Stormwind without the resources to maintain an invasion.
Sylvanas then mentioned that the war against the Burning Legion and the Argus Campaign had weakened both faction's navies, and because of this, the stalemate between both factions was no longer feasible. With both navies weakened, the Horde could hypothetically conquer Darnassus and secure all of Kalimdor for the Horde, with the chance of losing their hold in the Eastern Kingdoms, especially Undercity, right in the heart of Lordaeron.
Thus, a plan was born: Sylvanas wanted to bait the Night Elves into demanding the Alliance to prioritize the defense of their homeland from a Horde attack, dividing the Alliance's forces. Holding Darnassus from the Alliance would hypothetically drive a wedge between the Alliance, as the Alliance armies would be stretched too thin to save their capital, while the Night Elves would not stand to have their city taken. Saurfang realized this was Sylvanas' strategy to take Stormwind: To drive every nation away from the capital, and taking Stormwind after they all surrendered in their own territories. This, however, could only happen if the Horde won honorably, which Sylvanas knew the Horde wouldn't trust her with. So, she sent Saurfang to elaborate the plan to drive that wedge between the Alliance.
The Burning of Teldrassil
Sylvanas suggested luring the Alliance out of Ashenvale by fooling the Alliance spies located in Orgrimmar. With this information, Saurfang planted false information that he was forcing Sylvanas to monopolize the Azerite in Silithus. The Alliance took the bait, and sent a sizable force to Silithus to act as a deterrent. With Tyrande Whisperwind traveling to Stormwind to help plan the war against the Horde, only the Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage and his soldiers were left with defending Ashenvale and the northern zones.
Saurfang in the Northern Barrens, preparing the Horde forces to march upon Ashenvale.
After showering his army with promises of riches, Saurfang and the army reached the junction in the Northern Barrens (
). The rogue Lorash Sunspear was responsible for the distractions that led to the fall of Astranaar, allowing the Horde to take the Alliance city in Ashenvale (
,
). With Astranaar conquered, the Horde marched on to Darkshore.
In Darkshore, many of the orcish forces were obliterated by Malfurion's wisp wall. To make things worse, the Night Elven fleet had returned to Darkshore, and were helping Malfurion defend Darkshore. Sylvanas and Saurfang came with a plan to distract the wisps: While Sylvanas helped the Horde pass through the wisp wall by allowing them passage temporarily (
), Saurfang and Nathanos went through Felwood. After they went through a smuggler's pass into Felwood, they obliterated the wisp wall, allowing the Horde safe passage into Darkshore and to conquer Lor'danel (
).
Later on, Saurfang found Sylvanas battling Malfurion in the shores of Darkshore. It was hard to dictate who was besting each other, but after seeing Malfurion's antlers, Saurfang believed Sylvanas was losing and instinctively threw his axe on Malfurion's back. The moment the axe hit Malfurion, Saurfang noticed he did something immensely dishonorable, as the fight between them had not ended yet. Commending Saurfang for his quick thinking, Sylvanas gave him the honor of finishing Malfurion off. However, he could not bring himself to do so (
).
After Sylvanas left, Tyrande arrived to save Malfurion. Though Tyrande did heavily criticize Saurfang for the useless war, he did not back up, saying the war was necessary to ensure the Horde's survival. Tyrande allowed Saurfang to live for not killing Malfurion, but Saurfang warned her to leave, as Teldrassil was lost. Tyrande grabbed Malfurion and hearthed back to Stormwind. Saurfang was sure that Malfurion would recover and the Horde would pay for the transgression, but he was happy, as he believed he made an honorable decision (
).
Saurfang after striking Malfurion from the back.
Saurfang returned to Orgrimmar and reported that he failed to kill Malfurion, which left both Sylvanas and Nathanos displeased. Saurfang attempted to use the abandoned Night Elven ships in Darkshore to go to Teldrassil and safeguard the World Tree, but before he could do so, Sylvanas ordered the Burning of Teldrassil. Saurfang watched the tree burn in disbelief, knowing that losing Teldrassil forever and the miraculous survival of Malfurion Stormrage would unite the Alliance like never before. They would fight in pain, and learn that there was no other way to fight, other than victory... or death.
Ending of
A Good War
:
She had sent a message. This was not a war that would end in a stalemate. Not now. The Alliance and the Horde would both understand that the only choices were victory or death. Lok‐tar ogar.
Darnassus would not be the last city to burn. The loss of life on both sides would tower over this atrocity. And it would all rest on his shoulders. Every moment would be a nightmare.
Sylvanas turned back toward the World Tree, watching it burn. Saurfang made himself watch the flames consume city and citizens alike. He would not dishonor himself further by turning away.
The screams continued. They reminded him of Shattrath. He had loved the sound, then. Smoke filled the air, reminding him of Stormwind, of racing through the streets as buildings burned all around him, finding cowering humans and butchering them as they begged for their lives. He had loved the slaughter, then.
And he had loved this war, too, hadn’t he? Saurfang did not move for hours, not until the screams faded and the flames had burned themselves down to embers. Before him stood a smoking husk that had once been a great civilization. Inside him was a feeling of despair, a feeling of shame. There was no haze of corruption now to soften the horror.
Saurfang would remember this moment in his dreams forever. He would relive this shame, and all the new ones to come, over and over again.
You have led your Horde in the service of death
, Malfurion had said.
How could Saurfang face the soldiers he had led into this war? How could he explain what they had done? He couldn’t. He would never know how.
But the burden would be his, always, until his dying day.
As Saurfang turned away, he hoped that day would come soon.
Battle for Lordaeron
Saurfang arrived in Lordaeron Keep and witnessed all the Alliance forces amass before them. The Alliance was prepared to retake Undercity, in retaliation for losing Teldrassil. A troll named Zekhan found Saurfang, and asked the old Orc about war, as this was his first battle. Saurfang told the troll to simply attempt to not die, adding that this was a war without honor or glory to be had.
Saurfang removed his armor and went to meet the Alliance head-on, hoping to finally meet the Warrior's death he longed for. However, Zekhan rushed to Saurfang and gave him the necklace worn by Saurfang's son, Dranosh, which Saurfang had left behind to burn. Saurfang understood the message and returned to the Horde's barracks to prepare for war.
Saurfang helped with the defenses of Undercity, and when the Alliance breached into Lordaeron Keep, he argued against using the blight with Sylvanas. When confronted by Saurfang, Sylvanas bluntly stated that she did not care about Honor, and Saurfang could die his fabled warrior's death if he wanted to (
).
The Orc then waited for the Alliance to arrive outside the Lordaeron throne room. When Anduin Wrynn's forces arrived, he refused to stand down, engaging the Alliance in combat. Saurfang was ultimately defeated, but Anduin stopped all Alliance forces from killing him, much to Saurfang's dismay, as he wanted his warrior's death.
Anduin told Saurfang that his father, the late King Varian Wrynn, told him that Saurfang represented the best about the Horde, and admired the Orc for that, and Varian's admiration for Saurfang was passed on to Anduin. Anduin told Saurfang that dying there and now would bring Saurfang no honor, and Saurfang rebutted that an Alliance king had no say in such matters. Anduin mentioned that in that moment, he did have a say, and ordered the Alliance soldiers to bring Saurfang to the Alliance prison in the Stockades. Anduin wants to talk about honor there, although Saurfang doubts he would live that long (
).
The Stormwind Extraction
During the stealth mission to rescue Princess Talanji and Zul the Prophet from the Stockades, the Horde adventurer, together with Rokhan and First Arcanist Thalyssra meet with Saurfang. Saurfang had lost track of how long he was there, but he was certain that he would never return to the Horde as long as Sylvanas is Warchief. He also advises that they need to learn the difference between loyalty and honor, and pray that they never have to choose between the two (
).
You think you are here to take me back to Orgrimmar. Back to the Warchief. You are mistaken.
> What do you mean?
High Overlord Saurfang says: I have have lost track of the time I have sat in this cell. But it matters not in the end.
High Overlord Saurfang says: After all she has done, I will never return to her Horde.
High Overlord Saurfang says: Make sure you know the difference between loyalty and honor.
High Overlord Saurfang says: And pray you never have to choose.
Rokhan says: You not be comin' wit' us.
High Overlord Saurfang says: We both know you are not here for me. Those you seek are down the hall.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: I see... If you are certain, High Overlord.
High Overlord Saurfang says: I am. Lok'tar.
Rokhan says: Come, <name>. Dis way.
Lost Honor
Some time after that, Anduin went to visit Saurfang in the Stockades. While there, Anduin asked Saurfang why the Orc did not kill him in Lordaeron, as that would surely end the war. He also mentioned that he had doubts about Saurfang's honor, questioning if he wanted more innocents to suffer by extending the war. Saurfang angrily rebutted that he had given everything, his entire life, to the Horde, and Sylvanas was destroying it all. All Saurfang ever wanted was his Horde back.
He then responded that he didn't kill Anduin there because he thought the Alliance king could stop Sylvanas, but as Anduin leaves Saurfang's cell, the boy-king said that he can't stop Sylvanas - Not alone. As Anduin left the Stockades, he left Saurfang's cell open.
Tides of Vengeance
Saurfang has managed to escape the Stockades. Word of his escape already reached Sylvanas' ears, and she sends the player with a Dark Ranger to track the Orc down (
). After they arrive in Elwynn Forest, it is discovered that Saurfang escaped through the sewers of Stormwind, and made his way to Redridge Mountains (
).
After disguising as a human and infiltrate Redridge, it is discovered that the city was left suspiciously guardless, with all the guards being given an off-duty day, free beverages until they could no longer drink anymore, and free rooms at the Redridge Inn (
). This made it easy for Saurfang to pass through the southern areas of Redridge (
) and get close to the Swamp of Sorrows (
).
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Last night? Don't much remember about last night, do we? Hah!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Come on! No neet to tell 'em about that!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: It's fine! Why, Mr. Shaw himself paid us a visit! It's not every day the leader of SI:7 gives you the night off.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Truth be told, it wasn't so much the night off as it was a full bottle of very fine rum... and a lack of orders that we shouldn't drink it all in one sittin'.
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: Next thing you know, this one's so deep in his cups he can't hardly stand!
Redridge Garrison Watchman says: They don't need to hear any more about that...
> We want a room, please.
Sorry, they're all taken up by local guards right now.
Not sure where they got the gold, they filled up the rooms last night, even the captain was here.
At least one of them left me a mess to clean up in the morning, too.
After the Dark Ranger accompanying the player returns to the Undercity, the troll Zekhan, the same one Saurfang talked with during the Old Soldier cinematic, appeared and revealed that Saurfang was being helped by him, and is currently hiding in a farm in Swamp of Sorrows. Players have the option to either help Saurfang (
), or not betray Sylvanas and return to Orgrimmar with the information of Saurfang's location (
).
If the player chooses to report to Sylvanas, the questline ends there, but choosing to help Saurfang leads the players into the Swamp of Sorrows to find Saurfang. As you find the Orc, you find out that you were being still followed by the Dark Ranger, who wanted to kill Saurfang right there (
). After the Dark Ranger and her forces are all killed, Saurfang strikes you to make it seem you had a battle and lost to him, and you return to Sylvanas mentioning that he got away (
). Saurfang and Zekhan both leave the Swamp of Sorrows, their next destination unknown.
Saurfang after fending off the Dark Ranger's attacks, preparing to leave the Swamp of Sorrows.
Safe Haven
Saurfang's destination was, in fact, the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands. After crossing the Dark Portal, Saurfang went to Nagrand to meet Thrall, who was living a peaceful life with his mate and son, away from the politics and bloodshed of Azeroth. Saurfang tells Thrall of the atrocities Sylvanas was causing within the Horde, but Thrall said he wanted nothing to do with these, as he was no one's savior. Their conversation was cut short by Forsaken spies, who attacked both Orcs.
As the spies are killed, Thrall angrily yells at Saurfang that he was being followed, but Saurfang reveals that he was, in fact, following the spies, and this is how he managed to find Thrall. With this information, Saurfang convinced Thrall to return to Azeroth and fight for the Horde once more.
Rescuing Baine Bloodhoof
After Baine Bloodhoof is imprisoned by Sylvanas and his execution is ordered, Saurfang leads the Horde rebel forces to rescue Baine from the Underhold (
).
Together with Thrall, Saurfang ventures to the Underhold, where Baine was kept captive. As Thrall reminisces that he hasn't been there since Garrosh's fall in Siege of Orgrimmar, Saurfang tells him that Vol'jin had opened the area to house refuges after the Legion invasion, but Sylvanas had turned the area into a storage room for her newfangled Azerite weaponry. After they sneak through many Forsaken guards, they are surprised to meet with Jaina and Master Mathias Shaw, and noticed the Alliance had the same objective of rescuing Baine in mind. In an unlikely Alliance, Thrall, Saurfang, Jaina and Shaw venture deeper and eventually rescue Baine from the Underhold (
).
After Baine is rescued, Jaina teleports everyone to the outskirts of Thunder Bluff, where the Alliance and Horde leaders realize they need to join forces and fight Sylvanas' tyranny. Saurfang, alluding to what he told Anduin in
Lost Honor
, tells Jaina to tell Anduin that he is not alone.
Reckoning and Death
As Saurfang prepares to confront Sylvanas in the Gates of Orgrimmar, he reflects with Anduin on the Horde's dishonorable past: How he has no honor even though he fought for it for so long, and how Sylvanas is the true leader of the Horde in a sense, as she represents so much carnage and bloodshed. Anduin tells Saurfang that the Horde is worth fighting for, as well as Azeroth. Saurfang promises to break the cycle of war between the Horde and the Alliance.
During the confrontation at the Gates of Orgrimmar, after the combined forces of the Alliance and the Horde break through Sylvanas' first lines of defense, Thrall tells Saurfang that many lives would be lost in the upcoming conflict, with Saurfang declaring that only one life would be lost instead. With this, Saurfang stepped forward and challenged Sylvanas to a mak'gora, the sacred orc custom of dueling till the death.
Thrall tries to talk Saurfang out of the duel and Anduin tells Saurfang he is the one who led him to this path, the Alliance High King lending him his sword, Shalamayne, to use in the duel. However, in the duel, Sylvanas is able to easily overpower Saurfang in the beginning, slashing the Orc multiple times with her daggers. Saurfang then rose once more, telling Sylvanas how she has failed to kill hope multiple times, with Teldrassil, with Lordaeron, with all the events in Battle for Azeroth.
As Saurfang tells Sylvanas that the Horde will endure even after she's gone, he manages to split Shalamayne into its duo sword versions, Shalla'tor and Ellemayne, and injures Sylvanas using them. After Sylvanas declares that the Horde is nothing, she blasts Saurfang with an unidentified dark magic, killing Saurfang in the process and disappearing. As Saurfang lays dead, Zekhan asks what are they supposed to do now, with Thrall, Anduin and Zekhan carrying his corpse, and Thrall declaring that they will now bring Saurfang home.
As Sylvanas disappears, the entourage is allowed entrance into Orgrimmar. Some time later, a funeral is held for Saurfang in front of Grommash Hold, with both Thrall and Anduin delivering eulogies for Saurfang: Talking about his deeds as Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor during the Ahn'Qiraj war, as the leader of the Horde charge against the Lich King, as one of the main defenders of Azeroth against the third invasion of the Burning Legion. Thrall talked about how Saurfang always strived for honor, and how his legacy will live in the Horde's deeds, and Anduin talked about how Saurfang's courage on this fateful day has spared the lives of thousands on both the Horde and Alliance sides.
Saurfang is put to rest as Thrall finishes the eulogy saying that Saurfang had finally earned his sought-after warrior's death, and he was going to greet his son, Dranosh, with honor and glory.
Like many others, Saurfang's soul has been sent to the Maw.

Do you think you can make more lore about the other major WoW characters like Malfurion, Thrall, Cairne and Varian Wrynn?
