Tyrande Whisperwind is the current faction leader of the Night Elves. She was chosen by the Goddess Elune as her High Priestess, is the current head of the Sisterhood of Elune, and is the former General of the Night Elf Sentinels. Together with her lifelong love, Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage, she represents the highest leadership of the Night Elves since the fall of Queen Azshara, after the destruction of the Well of Eternity.
Pre Warcraft III
Tyrande Whisperwind was born in the highborne capital of Suramar, and grew up together with twin brother Malfurion and Illidan Stormrage. The three children were inseparable, playing and hunting together. As a huntress, Tyrande would often surpass both Malfurion and Illidan. As they became adults, each elf had their calling, with Tyrande becoming a recruit priestess in the Sisterhood of Elune.

The War of the Ancients
During the War of the Ancients, Tyrande fullfilled her duties as a Priestess and helped heal the wounds of those in battle. She and the other Priestess of the Moon would turn the Temple of Elune in Suramar into a safe haven. Since the War of the Ancients, both Malfurion and Illidan showed feelings for Tyrande, but only Malfurion was ever reciprocated.
When the Night Elf rebellion led by Kur'talos Ravencrest reached Suramar, the Priestesses of the Moon went into battle with them, together with many Suramar civilians. One of those civilians who joined the battle was an orphan named Shandris Feathermoon, which would follow Tyrande for years to come.
Shortly before the current High Priestess of the Moon, Dejahna, fell by the hands of the Burning Legion, she named Tyrande her sucessor, believing that she had extraordinary gifts due to being touched by Elune herself. Although the Sisterhood of Elune agreed with the decision and took Tyrande's abilities as a sign of Elune's approval, Tyrande herself had doubts in her ability to lead the Sisterhood.
The Sundering
As Azshara's demonic gateway grew in power, Tyrande knew they had to stop her before she managed to summon Sargeras into Azeroth. Malfurion brought the idea of destroying the Well of Eternity, believing it to be the portal location. The demigod Cenarius, and the Aspect of Life, Alexstrasza, met the idea with skepticism, knowing that the well gave them their powers. However, Tyrande realized that it needed to be done, even though it would mean the Night Elves would lose their immortality in the process.
Illidan was adamantly against the idea, and despite Tyrande's pleas, he abandoned the group and went on to warn Azshara of their intentions. Thanks to Illidan's warning, Azshara was more than prepared to deal with the forces coming against her and the Well.
Tyrande went with her Sentinels to attempt a sneak attack, while Malfurion attacked the entrance to the Well of Eternity. Although the Sentinels were successful with their attack, most of them were killed, with Tyrande herself suffering near lethal wounds. Once Malfurion laid eyes on Tyrande, fallen in battle, he went into a rage, and directly attacked Queen Azshara. The battle between Azshara and the Archdruid threw the spellcasting of the Highborne into chaos. This destabilized the Well, leading to it to explode and sunder Azeroth.
Tyrande survived the Sundering, and helped bring her people to Mount Hyjal. To Tyrande, Malfurion and Cenarius' horror, a lake atop Mount Hyjal ended up irradiated with the magical energies of the past Well of Eternity, which they had hoped was finally gone. However, Illidan had taken several vials from the old Well of Eternity, and was able to create a new well by pouring some of the vials into the lake. Malfurion, believing that Illidan's thirst for magic would always be a threat to the world, ended up imprisoning his brother in the Barrow Deeps beyond Hyjal. With the memories of the Sundering still very recent in their minds, Tyrande and the Night Elves decided to not attempt to destroy the new one.
Rebuilding the Night Elven Kingdom
With the new World Tree slowly growing atop Hyjal, Tyrande slowly helped rebuild the Night Elf society. After the High Elves were exiled, Malfurion knew he had to return to the Emerald Dream. Despite Tyrande begging for Malfurion to stay, he started hibernating with the rest of the Druids by the Barrow Dens in Moonglade.
Tyrande ended up rebuilding the Sentinels order with other night elf women, and they kept peace through Ashenvale for millennia with the help of the sons and daughters of Cenarius, as well as the many creatures beloved by the Moon Goddess. This has made Tyrande fiercer, willing to sacrifice everything to make sure their people are out of danger.
After many centuries, a new threat would rise from the shores. The Night Elves were somewhat aware of the events that happened across the seas in the Eastern Kingdoms, but rarely intervened. When the plague of undeath started acting in the Eastern Kingdoms, the druids of the Emerald Dream sensed it, and informed Tyrande of it.
Warcraft III
The Invasion of Ashenvale
When the Alliance and Horde expeditions made to Kalimdor and started going through Ashenvale, the Sentinels reported their locations to Tyrande. Tyrande, glad that they were not demons from the Burning Legion, ordered the Sentinels to observe both groups as there was a chance both groups were just going through the forest to find uncharted land to call their own. Unfortunately, the Orcs started to deforest Ashenvale, and Tyrande ordered the sentinels to attack the orcs, led by Grommash Hellscream.
Shandris Feathermoon, leader of the Shadowleaf Sentinels, returned to report to Tyrande that Cenarius was slain by the orcs. Tyrande gathered all her Sentinels, sensing a growing evil. Shandris advised that it was the orcs, but Tyrande sensed there was a bigger darkness stirring in the woods. During Tyrande's campaign, she found a group of Furbolgs, the Felwood tribe, that was attempting to leave Ashenvale before they were corrupted. After helping them, she bid the Furbolgs farewell.
After the Human and Orc encampments were slaughtered by the Undead, the fel leader responsible for this is finally revealed: the Eredar lord, Archimonde the Defiler. Archimonde caught up to the Night Elf forces and would have killed Tyrande on the spot, had she not used the powers of Elune to hide in the shadows. Hoping to warn the Shadowleaf Sentinels, Tyrande gathered the survivors and destroyed the Undead settlements in the area, making way to the Shadowleaf encampment.
The Awakening of the Druids
With the invasion of the Burning Legion, Tyrande knew it was time to awaken the druids sleeping in Moonglade once more. After arriving in Moonglade, the dryads located in the area informed Tyrande that the forces of the dreadlord Tichondrius were approaching the Barrow Dens, and the Horn of Cenarius, a relic that could be used to reawaken the druids, was blocked by an Orc encampment.
Tyrande, racing against time, managed to raid the Orc encampment and recover the Horn of Cenarius, defeat the primal guardians protecting the Barrow Dens, and used the Horn to reawaken Malfurion Stormrage and the other druids. Malfurion, conferring with Tyrande, believed that Archimonde wanted to use the powers of the newly raised World Tree, Nordrassil, to become powerful enough to bring all of the Burning Legion to Azeroth.
Tyrande and Malfurion went to Winterspring to awaken the Druids of the Talon, sleeping at the Barrow Dens there. When they arrived there, they found the Felwood furbolgs, who did not escape from corruption. Tyrande, with no other option, saw herself forced to slaughter the furbolgs to end their suffering. Malfurion noticed that Tyrande was colder than before, who promptly responded that she could not have the luxury sleep through their times of need.
The Liberation of Illidan
After the Druids of the Talon were awakened, their next target was the Druids of the Claw, sleeping at the Barrow Dens in Mount Hyjal. While traveling through the Barrow Dens, they crossed an elven door, quickly identified as Illidan's prison. Tyrande suggested freeing Illidan, as his power would be perfect to be used against the Burning Legion.
Malfurion, however, declined the offer, forbidding Tyrande to ever free his brother. Tyrande, enraged that Malfurion would dare to forbid her to anything after leaving her for so long, gathered her Sentinels and raided the Barrow Dens. Tyrande at first talked to the Watchers stationed there to free Illidan, who refused to do so. After defeating the Keeper of the Grove Califax and defying Maiev Shadowsong, Illidan's jailer, Tyrande freed Illidan, begging him to help her people.
Illidan, still in love with Tyrande, agreed with helping her, although it would be only because she asked him, for he did not care for the fate of the Night Elves. After they met again, Malfurion scolded Tyrande for freeing his brother, saying he would have absolutely nothing to do with him.
Illidan went to Felwood to battle with the demons there by himself. Once Tyrande and Malfurion were alerted that Illidan was fighting with Tichondrius himself, they went there to help, but all they found was Tichondrius defeated, and Illidan transformed into a demon. Tyrande was left horrified by Illidan's new form, and did not object Malfurion banishing him from the forests forever.
The Battle for Mount Hyjal
Malfurion and Tyrande went to Ashenvale where they met the leaders of the outsiders, the human Jaina Proudmoore and the orc known as Thrall. Tyrande attempted to run them away because of the turmoil both of them brought to the forests, but a powerful mage suddenly showed up, revealing himself as the Last Guardian of Tirisfal, Medivh. Medivh informed everyone that Archimonde was far more powerful than them, and they had no chance of defeating the Eredar Lord unless united.
Tyrande was still wary of the orcs because of the death of Cenarius, but she realized she had little choice but to join forces with the humans and orcs. Tyrande also assigned one of her Sentinels, Pained, to assist Jaina in her camp as a bodyguard. Pained would serve as Jaina's bodyguard, saying she was never relieved of her duties, until her death.
Tyrande, Malfurion and Shandris would aid the defenses of Jaina and Thrall's camps until they were overrun. Once Archimonde arrived at the night elf camp, near Nordrassil, he destroyed everything and started draining Nordrassil. However, Archimonde did not account the ancient guardians, the Wisps, gathering around him as he drained the World Tree's energies. At Malfurion's command, the guardians began attacking Archimonde, detonating themselves at him. Archimonde was defeated by the guardians, although he did end up damaging the World Tree.
After the Battle for Mount Hyjal, each race went separate ways, with Tyrande and Malfurion remaining on Hyjal helping rebuild the settlements there.
Terror of the Tides
After months of peace, they were interrupted by one of the Wardens of Maiev Shadowsong, warning that Illidan returned and started attacking the leader of the Wardens. Malfurion decided to go reinforce Maiev's forces, and Tyrande followed him.
After arriving at the Broken Isles, Tyrande and Malfurion fought against Illidan's allies, the Naga, and eventually located Maiev. Although she was glad Malfurion came to help her, she turned away from Tyrande, mentioning that it was her fault that Illidan escaped and started murdering the Wardens one by one. Maiev shouted that Tyrande should be locked together with Illidan, and Tyrande defended her actions, believing it was the best decision for the safeguarding of the Night Elves. Malfurion was forced to intervene before they started trading blows.
When they found Illidan, he said he wanted to demonstrate his power to Tyrande, hoping to finally win her love over Malfurion. However, Tyrande revealed a detail that Illidan did not want to hear for over ten thousand years: She believed that inner strength would always triumph over raw power, and that was the reason she chose Malfurion over him. She also mentioned that she finally realized it was a mistake to set him free, and started attacking Illidan's forces.
As Malfurion and Tyrande were starting to get the upper hand, Tyrande noticed Illidan was running away and started chasing the demon hunter. She caught up to him but ended up ensnared by Illidan. He chose to spare her life, and as Malfurion and Maiev finally reached Tyrande, Illidan was already long gone.
Journey to the Plaguelands
Tyrande, Malfurion and Maiev journeyed east once more, and arrived in the lands recognized by Malfurion as Lordaeron. With the forests devastated and blighted by the passage of the Scourge, Malfurion had to commune with the spirits there, leaving Tyrande and Maiev alone in the process.
While looking for Illidan, they stumbled across a group of High Elves led by Kael'thas Sunstrider. Kael'thas explained that his settlement was overrun by the Scourge and they were prepared to move. Against Maiev's protests, who believed finding Illidan was more important than anything, Tyrande decided to help the High Elves. Tyrande would not leave them protected since their Alliance brethren, represented by Jaina Proudmoore in Kalimdor, helped the Night Elves in their time of need.
Tyrande and Maiev joined forces and helped thwart the Scourge assaults. They managed to arrive at Pyrewood Village in Silverpine Forest, where they were ambushed by the Scourge. Tyrande told them to cross the river, promising to hold the line at all costs. Maiev was convinced Tyrande would fall, but she was convinced that Elune would aid her if needed.
As the Scourge advanced, Tyrande used the powers of Elune to crush all Undead coming at her. But right before achieving victory, the bridge Tyrande was standing on collapsed. Maiev told the High Elf allies to go after Illidan, instead of helping save Tyrande. Tyrande managed to hold on to her forces on a small island, constantly being attacked.
As Tyrande and her Sentinels started getting worn out, Tyrande believed it was the end. However, she was surprised by Illidan, who fought his way to her and rescued her through a portal. Illidan explained that Malfurion found him and they both sensed Tyrande was in danger, deciding to join forces to save her.
Malfurion told Illidan that his actions saved her life but he was to not threaten the Night Elves again, who understood and prepared to leave through another portal. As Illidan traversed his portal, Maiev arrived, furious that Malfurion let Illidan escape once more, and she traversed the portal with her Wardens. Tyrande tried to stop Maiev, but Malfurion understood that Maiev was consumed by vengeance, and would not listen to anyone.
World of Warcraft: Classic
Malfurion and Tyrande would help the Night Elves rebuild their lives after the catastrophic events they went together. Although the Night Elves started getting used to being mortal, many of them did not resist the prospects of dying of diseases, frailty, or even old age. Seeking to regain their immortality, a group of druids attempted to build another World Tree that would, once more, link their spirits to the eternal world.
Malfurion did hear about this plan, but warned the druids that this World Tree would never be blessed by nature, as it was borne from an act of selfishness. Shortly after this, Malfurion's spirit was lost to the Emerald Dream. This sudden disappearance deeply troubled Tyrande and his fellow druids, who did roam the Emerald Dream but found nothing.
With Malfurion Stormrage missing, the druid leading the efforts to build a new World Tree, Fandral Staghelm, quickly rose to the position of Archdruid. Staghelm and his druids managed to build a new World Tree off the northwestern coast of Kalimdor, named Teldrassil. Staghelm's care made sure that the tree would rise above the clouds, and the new marvelous capital of Darnassus was established there. However, as Malfurion predicted, the tree was not blessed by nature, and soon fell prey to the corruptions of the Emerald Nightmare and the Burning Legion alike.
With Malfurion gone, Tyrande was left as the sole leader of all the Night Elf society, including the Sentinels, Priestesses of the Moon, and the leader of Darnassus. She attempted to rule the Night Elves without reliving their errors of the past, but would constantly get in fights with Staghelm because of his aggressive beliefs.
Although Azeroth was saved thanks to the races of the Horde and the Alliance uniting, that tenuous pact all but dissipated over time. The Night Elves decided to join the Alliance, thanks to the conflicts against the orcs deforesting Ashenvale.
The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj
During the events that led to the opening of Ahn'Qiraj, Tyrande sensed that the corruption was spreading through the Emerald Dream. When the corrupted Green Dragon Eranikus assaulted Moonglade, Tyrande went there to aid the defenses with her Priestesses of the Moon, alongside Keeper Remulos. Although Eranikus was all but lost to the Nightmare, Tyrande managed to channel Elune's light, freeing the Tyrant of the Dream of his corruption.
Eranikus, now redeemed thanks to Tyrande, gives the adventurer the Green Scepter Shard, one of the shards necessary to rebuild the Scepter of the Shifting Sands, before returning to the Emerald Dream. He also mentions Malfurion is there, helping fight against the Nightmare (
).
Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream yells: I... I feel... I feel the touch of Elune upon my being once more... She smiles upon me... Yes... I...
Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream is wholly consumed by the Light of Elune. Tranquility sets in over the Moonglade.
Tyrande falls to one knee.
Tyrande yells: Praise be to Elune... Eranikus is redeemed.
Eranikus the Redeemed says: For so long, I was lost... The Nightmare's corruption had consumed me... And now, you... all of you.. you have saved me. Released me from its grasp.
Eranikus the Redeemed says: But... Malfurion, Cenarius, Ysera... They still fight. They need me. I must return to the Dream at once.
Eranikus the Redeemed says: My lady, I am unworthy of your prayer. Truly, you are an angel of light. Please, assist me in returning to the barrow den so that I may return to the Dream. I like Malfurion, also have a love awaiting me... I must return to her... to protect her...
Eranikus the Redeemed says: And heroes... I hold that which you seek. May it once more see the evil dissolved. Remulos, see to it that our champion receives the shard of the Green Flight.
Keeper Remulos says: It will be done, Eranikus. Be well, ancient one.
Wrath of the Lich King
Tyrande did not have a lot of participation in the game lore until after the fall of the Lich King, during the novel
Stormrage
.
Stormrage
After the Lich King was finally defeated, Tyrande started being haunted by nightmares of Malfurion's death while in the Emerald Dream. She decided to travel to Moonglade, where Malfurion's body was being taken care of. Knowing that Fandral Staghelm would not help with the quest, she decided to go for the druid Broll Bearmantle, one of Varian Wrynn's companions in his times as a gladiator in the Orgrimmar arenas. Tyrande had Shandris stay in command of Darnassus while she went on the quest to find Malfurion's dream form via the portal in Bough Shadow.
After traveling to Auberdine, she realized the city was being taken by the Nightmare, which tried to attack her and Broll, but they were rescued by a human called Lucan Foxblood. They all noticed a dragon, and Lucan used his powers to teleport near the dragon. Revealed to be Ysera's consort, Eranikus, Tyrande healed the dragon. Tyrande and Broll asked for Eranikus' help, who flew them to the Bough Shadow at the border of Ashenvale.
Arriving there, they found a single guardian, the Ancient of War Gnarl. Gnarl at first attacked Eranikus, believing the dragon was still corrupt, but Tyrande convinced the ancient that he was healed. Gnarl allowed them passage into the Emerald Dream, but as they were entering, the corrupted dragon Lethon arrived to attempt to corrupt Eranikus once more. Lethon, together with Emeriss, both attacked Eranikus while Tyrande and Broll were being attacked by satyrs hailing from the Nightmare. Alexstrasza, the Aspect of Life, arrived and forced both dragons to retreat. Joining their group, they all entered the Dream to find Malfurion and Ysera.
In the nightmare, they locate Lucan, who was attacked by an orc named Thura, who had plans to kill Malfurion. Tyrande believed that Thura wanted revenge on Malfurion for the death of Broxigar, who died during the Third War and was the only mortal to ever wound the titan Sargeras. While running after Thura, the Nightmare caught up to Tyrande, who saw a vision of Queen Azshara attempting to transform her into a Naga. Tyrande managed to use the powers of Elune to avoid the vision and fell unconscious.
Tyrande woke up with the whispers of Malfurion, but she was still determined to save Malfurion from Thura's wrath. She managed to find Malfurion at the same time as Thura, and they both went to blows. Thura landed a blow on the corrupted tree that was imprisoning Malfurion, freeing him from his prison. Ysera and her Green Dragons arrived to observe the situation, but this led to Ysera being sucked into the Emerald Nightmare, making the situation within the Emerald Dream that much worse. Everyone was left to be attacked by Emeriss, who tossed them all to a portal back to Azeroth.
Arriving in Azeroth, they found Gnarl being corrupted by the Nightmare. Everyone except Lucan was seeing visions of their worst nightmares, with Tyrande witnessing a vision of a dying Malfurion. Lucan used his power once more, materializing everyone again in the Emerald Dream, next to Eranikus. Eranikus, saddened by Ysera's entrapment, forced himself to threaten the mortals so they would teleport out of the Dream.
Everyone materialized in Stormwind. Varian Wrynn greeted them and sent them to the room where the Night Elf ambassador lived. In there, Tyrande and Broll found a Hearthstone bound to Darnassus, and they were attacked by the dreaming ambassador, also being corrupted by the Nightmare. Tyrande ordered Broll to hearthstone away to Darnassus, while Lucan and Thura helped calm the ambassador. After a Stormwind major started having signals of corruption, they teleported back to the Emerald Dream using Lucan's powers.
In the Dream, they learned the Nightmare wanted Tyrande, as well as Thura's axe, as prisoners. Tyrande created a diversion so that Thura and Lucan could teleport away, while Tyrande remained within the Nightmare. While waiting for rescue, she attempted to use Elune's power to heal Emeriss, but Emeriss was left diseased and rotten by the Nightmare, and after Tyrande healed the corruption, there was nothing left of the mighty dragon.
Thanks to Malfurion's efforts, Tyrande was rescued, although she forced Malfurion to accept her help in the battle against the Nightmare Lord, Xavius. After Xavius is finally defeated, they agreed to leave him imprisoned within the Rift of Aln, a vast fissure within the Emerald Dream. After the War Against the Nightmare is over, the mortals returned to Azeroth to help rebuild the world. In a celebration held in Darnassus, Tyrande and Malfurion got married.
Cataclysm
With Malfurion no longer lost in the Dream, Tyrande insisted they resumed their duties together as leaders of the Night Elves, and Malfurion could be found next to Tyrande at the Temple of the Moon in Darnassus. After Gilneas is lost to the Forsaken, Tyrande welcomes King Genn Greymane, Queen Mia Greymane, and all the Gilnean refugees into Darnassus, asking for their aid on the effort against the Horde and welcoming them once again as part of the Alliance (
).
Tyrande Whisperwind says: Good evening.
Gwen Armstead says: Priestess Tyrande! We did not expect you. Good evening.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: I hope my people have been welcoming to you. These are burdened times, so I fear much may be competing with their good graces.
Genn Greymane says: Not at all, priestess. We are very grateful for all that you've offered us here.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: When we spoke previously, you offered to repay the favor. I may have to act on that sooner than I would have liked.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: There is trouble at Lor'danel, a village of ours across the waters from Rut'theran.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: If any of your people can be spared, I fear war encroaching upon us in Kalimdor.
Genn Greymane says: I know the perfect people for such a task. I will send them immediately, priestess.
Malfurion Stormrage says: Thank you, Genn. I am glad to see such poise and composure from your people. Perhaps your curse does not define you afterall.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: We will take our leave. Again, welcome to all of you.
Hour of Twilight
Tyrande appears twice as her past and future self during the Hour of Twilight instances.
In End Time, Tyrande is one of the four possible echoes players have to fight through. The Echo of Tyrande is located in the Emerald Dragonshrine, which has been bathed in perpetual night. This version of Tyrande is desperate for the warmth of Elune's light, but she finds only silence and darkness.
In Well of Eternity, we see a past version of Tyrande, moments before the Well of Eternity is destroyed. This past version of Tyrande helps players fight against the final bosses of the instance, Mannoroth and Varo'then.
Mists of Pandaria
Lorekeeper Vaeldrin, a Night Elf who researched on how to restore the Elf race's immortality, heard long ago that there existed a Pool of Youth deep within Pandaria, and urged Tyrande to approve of the mission to search said pools. Tyrande refused at first, but after seeing a vision of a Light that needed to be protected, she approved of Vaeldrin's expedition to Pandaria. While their expedition was exploring Krasarang Wilds, they were caught in a Mogu trap that would slowly leech their life energies away (
).
After Vaeldrin and his expedition are freed from the trap, they continued looking for the Pools of Youth, and eventually found them, only to learn with dismay that these pools do not grant youth or restore lives, but instead only transfers life energies from one being to another (
).
Landfall
Tyrande arrived with the Alliance forces in Pandaria, bringing several Elven Rangers with her. With her rangers, she started chasing after a Horde party, eventually ending by the Temple of the Red Crane in Krasarang Wilds. We help Tyrande attack the Horde forces on the
scenario. Tyrande suggests brute force to attack the temple, but King Varian instead wants to use of strategy, laying many traps to decimate the Horde forces.
The cautious approach results in a decisive Alliance victory with minimal casualties. Tyrande commends Varian on his strategic approach at the end of the scenario, pledging her Ranger forces to Varian's command. Tyrande is later seen during the Alliance meeting in the Shrine of the Seven Stars, where they discuss whether using the Sha energies against Garrosh is a valid strategy. After seeing the Sha manifestation within an Alliance soldier, she was left horrified, voting in favor of destroying the Sha at all costs.
Siege of Orgrimmar
Tyrande is briefly seen during the Siege of Orgrimmar. After the
is defeated, her forces approach the gates of Orgrimmar from the west, using Glaive Throwers to tear down the front gates of the Orc capital.
War Crimes
During Garrosh's trial, documented on the novel
War Crimes
, Tyrande served as the accusation against the Warchief. With Chromie as her advisor, she used the Vision of Time, a relic created by the bronze dragon Kairozdormu that can be used to witness events of the past, she displayed many events that would prove her accusations. Displayed events included the threats against Sylvanas (
), Vol'jin (
and the
scenario), the plans that led to
, as well as many minor displays of brutality such as kicking out all other races but Orcs from Orgrimmar.
Tyrande was the accuser against Baine Bloodhoof serving as Garrosh's defender. For most of the trial, Tyrande seemed to have the upper hand against Baine, even though she was ruthless during all her talks on the trial. After Kairoz and the Dragonmaw Clan rescued Garrosh, the August Celestials revealed that they never intended to execute Garrosh. Instead, the people on Garrosh's trial were the one being judged by them instead. The August Celestials were pleased with Tyrande's relentless quest for justice, but they disagreed with her that Garrosh should be killed after trial, on the argument that everyone needs to have a chance for second changes, no matter how bad the crime was.
Legion
Tyrande attended Varian's funeral with all other Alliance leaders. When demons attacked the funeral after the warning from the Demon Hunter Jace Darkweaver, Tyrande agreed to welcome them into the Alliance (
), as well as realizing that the situation in the Broken Isles must be really dire, since the Wardens agreed to free the Demon Hunters.
Tyrande traveled to Val'sharah after receiving visions of the Nightmare's return. After returning there, Tyrande realizes Xavius is back and managed to both corrupt Ysera and capture Malfurion (
).
Tyrande went on a rage, searching Malfurion through the Nightmare-infested woods (
). After seeing the ancient Elothir fall to corruption (
) and chasing illusions of a mock version of Malfurion through the Nightmare (
), Tyrande is given an ultimatum by Xavius - She can either pursue Xavius and spend Malfurion's last moments at his side, or she can return to the Temple of Elune and defend the temple against Xavius' forces, led by Ysera.
Tyrande, heartbroken, chose to defend the temple over Malfurion. After returning to the Temple of the Moon, she and adventurers help defeat the corrupted Ysera, who is claimed by Elune as the Dreamer draws her last breath (
).
After putting Ysera to rest, Tyrande turns her attention on the efforts of rescuing Malfurion from the hands of Xavius, sending adventurers to
(
).
Insurrection
Tyrande leads the Sentinels to help liberate Suramar from the rule of Grand Magistrix Elisande. Feeling nostalgic about returning to her birthplace after millennia, she forms an Alliance with the sin'dorei led by Lady Liadrin, and set camp next to Suramar with Vereesa Windrunner and the war mages from the Silver Covenant.
Recalling how passive Suramar was during the War of Eternity, to the point of exiling themselves from the world by raising a mana shield around the entire city, Tyrande has a fairly negative opinion of both the Nightborne and the Nightfallen, having no regard for the Nightborne that still serve the Burning Legion (
). Tyrande also shows concern to whether the leader of the Nightfallen, First Arcanist Thalyssra, will end up betraying their forces or even a better leader than Elisande or Azshara. They will determine what will happen with Elune's wisdom after the Nightwell is destroyed (
).
Onde the sin'dorei and shal'dorei breach into Suramar, Tyrande leads the kal'dorei forces through and all elven forces eventually reach the gates to Nighthold, but are frozen in a time prison and greeted by a massive Elisande hologram. Elisande's hologram proceeds to mock all elven races, mentioning that the Night Elves dared to disgrace a glorious past.
Grand Magistrix Elisande says: Kaldorei? You disgrace a glorious past, hiding in trees and cloaking yourselves in false piety. You have grown as savage as the trolls that skulk about your forest.
With the help of Khadgar, adventurers rescue Tyrande from the time prison
. Tyrande is present when
is defeated as the final boss of
. After Thalyssra chooses to let the Nightwell fade away, Tyrande hopes that the Nightborne can learn to survive without its energies (

The Argus Campaign
Before Illidan Stormrage left for the final battle with the Legion on
, he created two crystals with farewell messages, one of them directed to Tyrande. On Tyrande's message, he mentions that all paths he took led to him eventually saving the world, but when he despaired or had any doubts, he thought of Tyrande as his anchor against the madness. While he still wished she had chosen him over Malfurion, he knew deep inside she had made the right choice.
Tyrande reflected on how she tried to let go of the feelings she could have had for him during the
campaign, and could not bring herself to speak to him after his revival. Mentioning the time for talking had passed, both she and Illidan had different duties to fulfill (
).
Tyrande Whisperwind says: I sense a sorcerer's touch upon this crystal.
Illidan Stormrage says: Tyrande... long ago, you trusted me enough to defy Malfurion's wishes and free me from my prison.
Illidan Stormrage says: But over time, that faith was lost. And like my brother, you came to believe that the choices I made had driven me to darkness.
Illidan Stormrage says: Know that every path I took led toward a single purpose: saving our world. I could abide no half measures. No compromise.
Illidan Stormrage says: At those times when I faced doubt, I held true to one constant. One anchor. You.
Illidan Stormrage says: You have always embodied the best of Azeroth, Tyrande. Your faith. Your devotion. Through the darkest times, my belief in you never wavered.
Illidan Stormrage says: My fate, my duty, are now clear to me. I leave Azeroth's defense to you... and to my brother.
Illidan Stormrage says: Take care of him, Tyrande. Though at times I wished your heart had made a different choice, in the end... I know it made the right one.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: Contrite words. Yet I must wonder whether he truly meant them.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: After Illidan faced defeat atop the Black Temple, I tried to let go of my feelings... my distrust and bitterness.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: When I learned that he was alive, leading the fight against the Legion on the Broken Shore... I could not bring myself to speak to him.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: The time for talk has passed. It seems he has a duty to fulfill... as do we. Let us be about it, champion.
The Nightborne Join the Horde
On the questline that introduces the Nightborne as an Allied race, Thalyssra mentions how at the beginning, the Night Elves would have been obvious allies to the Nightborne. However, she had perceived Tyrande's caution as mistrust toward the Nightborne, and received sympathy from Lady Liadrin mentioning that Tyrande had once scorned the Blood Elves as well (
).
Lady Liadrin says: The Horde was proud to fight by your side against the Burning Legion, my lady.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: I must admit, when I first learned of the Horde, I was skeptical that we would share common ground.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: I though our kin from Kalimdor would make obvious allies. But their arrogance and mistrust soon proved otherwise.
---
Tyrande Whisperwind says: Arcanist Thalyssra. I remember where your order stood in the War of the Ancients. How do we know you won't betray us and become the next Elisande... the next Azshara?
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: We do not intend to be slaves to the Nightwell. We seek to drive the Legion from Suramar and put an end to Elisande's oppression.
Tyrande Whisperwind says: The kaldorei will fight to see the Legion defeated and the Nightwell destroyed. Beyond that... we shall see where Elune's wisdom guides us.
---
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: It would seem "Elune's wisdom" guided her away from the bond we once shared. So be it.
Lady Liadrin says: The sin'dorei are also scorned by Tyrande and her prideful lot. Yet for many ages her people slept in dens or hid in trees while my people fought to save this world.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: The Alliance feels too walled off... too cloistered. My people will never endure such stagnation again.
First Arcanist Thalyssra says: That is why I am grateful for your invitation to Silvermoon. I would like to inquire whether there could be a place for the nightborne in your Horde.
Battle for Azeroth
Tyrande is being further explored in Battle for Azeroth.
War of the Thorns
After being briefed by Mathias Shaw about the Horde willing to conquer Silithus (
), Tyrande mentioned to Anduin that she believed the Horde wanted to secure a monopoly of the powerful mineral in Kalimdor. Thanks to the Argus campaign, the Draenei forces were tired, the Night Elves were left as the best Alliance defense in Kalimdor.
Tyrande and Anduin agreed to move the Night Elf army in case the Horde wants to march onto Silithus, stationing in Feralas. While Tyrande was planning the war strategy in Stormwind, the Horde saw this as an opportunity to attack the weakened defenses of Ashenvale (
). When word of the invasion reached Stormwind, the Alliance leadership noticed they were deceived into leaving the northern part of Kalimdor undefended. The Alliance united to help Ashenvale, with Tyrande focusing on the wounded before joining Malfurion, the front line currently holding Ashenvale in the main fight.
During the War Effort, Malfurion's defenses fell and the Horde started invading Darkshore (
). Malfurion had sent a missive to Tyrande explaining the situation and stating possible farewells, which sent Tyrande to fight in Darkshore despite Anduin's objections. Before Tyrande went to Darkshore, she was given a Hearthstone bound to Stormwind by Anduin, to return with Malfurion if needed.
After arriving in Darnassus, Tyrande prayed to Elune, who sent a beam of moonlight directing her to where Malfurion is. Tyrande arrived in Darkshore with Malfurion at the mercy of Varok Saurfang (
). However, Saurfang decided to spare Malfurion as he had struck the Archdruid from the back, an action he found dishonorable. Tyrande arrived just in time to heal Malfurion's wounds, and used the Hearthstone provided by Anduin to return to Stormwind with Malfurion.
High Overlord Saurfang: I struck without honor. I did not deserve to end him.
Tyrande Whisperwind: The entire war is without honor. How dare you spill so much blood... for nothing!
High Overlord Saurfang: Not for nothing. We spill blood so that the Horde will endure.
Tyrande Whisperwind: Because you spared Malfurion, I will offer you a choice.
Tyrande Whisperwind: Attempt to stop me from taking him away, and die... or remain there, kneeling in the dirt, and live.
High Overlord Saurfang: You have a choice as well. Take him to Darnassus and both of you will fall when we conquer ir... or flee somewhere far from here, so that you both survive.
Tyrande Whisperwind: This war is lost. Teldrassil will soon fall.
Tyrande Whisperwind: Take my hippogryph to Darnassus. Ensure that the Horde's occupation is as... tolerable as it can be.
Tyrande Whisperwind: King Anduin gave me a hearthstone back to Stormwind. There I will tend my love's wound... and help my people find respite from this madness.
After arriving in Stormwind, Tyrande still sent adventurers to tend for Darnassus, but it was too late, as the Horde started the efforts to burn down Teldrassil. Tyrande helped with the efforts to evacuate Darnassus (
) from the Stormwind side. Tyrande named the last refugee from Darnassus, a newborn Night Elf baby, Finel - "The Last" in Darnassian - for she was the last Kaldorei to escape Darnassus alive.
Tides of Vengeance
Tyrande sends her faithful owl, Dori'thur, to find the adventurers in Boralus. When we return to Stormwind, we find Tyrande in an audience with Anduin, enraged that the Alliance cannot spare resources to help the Night Elves reclaim Darkshore, currently in control of the Forsaken forces. Tyrande is resolved to wrestle Darkshore's control back to the Night Elves by herself (
).
After arriving in Ashenvale with Maiev Shadowsong and Sira Moonwarden, they all find out that Tyrande musters enough strength by undergoing a dangerous ritual to become the Night Warrior, an avatar of vengeance empowered by Elune herself. In the scenario, the adventurers locate Tyrande and protect her as she undergoes the ritual and successfully obtains the blessing of Elune (
).
Tyrande, as the Night Warrior, advances into the Horde controlled structures in Darkshore, killing all Forsaken and leaving their commander, Deathstalker Captain Belmont, alive as a warning.
Tyrande finally finds Nathanos, who was collecting the corpses of the now deceased Sira Moonwarden and of Captain Delaryn Summermoon. Empowered by Elune, she strikes down Nathanos and the two Val'kyr accompanying him. As Nathanos was outmatched by the Night Warrior, one of the Val'kyr, Brynja, sacrificed herself to ensure Nathanos, the raised Sira and Delaryn, and the other Val'kyr could escape with their lives. After this, Tyrande launches the efforts to take Darkshore back, with Maiev chosen as her commander. As we have learned through the BlizzCon 2019 Q&A panel, the night elves took back their home lands.
Tyrande now has a new model in Patch 8.1 after undergoing her ritual. In addition, Night Elves unlock special "Night Warrior" customization options for completing the

Shadows Rising
When Thrall received news from the Earthen Ring that something seemed to be wrong with the afterlife, he arranged for a meeting with Tyrande and Malfurion. Tyrande agreed to the meeting, but only on the condition that Thrall bring what was owed. Calia Menethil and Baine Bloodhoof accompanied Thrall to the meeting, while Tyrande and Malfurion brought Maiev Shadowsong and Shandris Feathermoon. Thrall brought the sincere apology of the Horde - which Tyrande did not accept. She stayed silent for most of the meeting, only nearly smiling when Maiev insisted the Horde could never be trusted. Finally, she spoke.
When you have washed the bodies of a thousand kaldorei burned and broken, when you have fallen to your knees and kissed the feet of a thousand mourning souls, when you look into their eyes and tell them ‘our Horde has changed’ and they believe you, only then will I accept your apology and treat you as my equal.” Tyrande’s voice, edged as steel, pulled the air out of the clearing. “My brethren here may be willing to entertain your empty pledges of justice and aid, but I know better. I have learned better.
How many orphans did your Horde create that day? Those children will grow, they will wake each morning tasting ash, and one day they will come for you. Oh, they will come for you, and they will make you taste that same ash, and then you will know their justice.
Finally understanding, Thrall promised to return with what was asked for - the head of Sylvanas Windrunner. At this, Tyrande smiled.
Later, it was revealed that Tyrande was one of the worries weighing Anduin down, though what specifically about Tyrande was not mentioned.
Thrall captured Sira Moondwarden, undead Night Elf who had betrayed her people to Sylvanas, and sent her as a gift to Tyrande, along with a note that stated, "This is not what was owed, but I hope it is a start."
Sira taunted Tyrande, accusing her of doing nothing for her people. Tyrande drew her blade, causing both Shandris and Maiev to try intervene. Maiev reminds Tyrande of a time when she tried to rescue a fawn with two snapped legs. Tyrande replied that the fawn died, but Maiev pointed out that Tyrande had still tried right until the end, because that was who Tyrande was. Maiev did not want to see Tyrande lose who she was and become like Sira.
Sira taunted Tyrande again, and Tyrande let the blade fall, but only to cut a shallow wound in Sira's neck. The cut made her feel alive again, but she allowed Shandris to take the blade from her, while Shandris and Maiev spoke of the mercy Tyrande had shown. Before leaving, Tyrande mentions her own power and desire for revenge and that they frightened her - and should frighten them all.
