N'Zoth is one of the four Old Gods of Azeroth, long considered to be the weakest of the Old Gods but the only surviving Old God in Battle for Azeroth.
The Black Empire and N'Zoth's Imprisonment
During the ancient times of the Black Empire, N'Zoth had control of a vast empire at the eastern part of Azeroth. Much of the land zone N'Zoth had under control would later become the Eastern Kingdoms, after the destruction of the Well of Eternity.

From Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1, pages 34-35.
During the war against the Black Empire, the titan-forged, armies created by the Pantheon from Azeroth's crust, undertook the task of killing all Old Gods. However, after killing the Old God Y'Shaarj, the Pantheon discovered that the Old Gods were so embedded within Azeroth that destroying one of them entirely would cause massive damage to Azeroth, if not outright destroy the world. To counter this, they have decided to instead create massive prisons to withheld the Old Gods' evil, with N'Zoth being the first to fall to them.
From Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 1, page 36:
Horrified by this turn of events, the Pantheon realized that they could not risk killing the other Old Gods in such a manner. The malignant creatures had embedded themselves so deep into the world that tearing them out would destroy Azeroth itself.
The Pantheon knew that the only course of action was to imprison the Old Gods where they lay and contain their evil forever. It would be a difficult task, but it would be possible with the aid of the keepers. At the Pantheon's behest, the titan-forged devised a plan to shatter the last vestiges of the Black Empire forever. They would battle each of the Old Gods directly. Once they had weakened the creatures, Archaedas would create subterranean chambers to contain them. When this work was done, Loken would imbue each prison with a great enchantment that would neutralize the Old God's evil.
With their plans formed, the titan-forged began their campaign. Great battles tore across the land as the titan-forged fought their way southeast to the bastion of N'Zoth. After overwhelming the Old God, the keepers used their powers to encase the creature in an underground prison.
N'Zoth was imprisoned where he stood, which would be somewhere between the Well of Eternity and the location of the titan facility of Uldaman.

The War of the Ancients
As the War of the Ancients ended with the destruction of the well and the sundering of Azeroth, the Light of Lights, Queen Azshara, was approached by a strange fish with red eyes. This fish would tell Azshara to "let go" and "give up her empire", as the collapsing of the well destroyed her palace.
Azshara was a powerful sorceress, but even her arcane shields eventually faded, sweeping her and her Highborne court into the sea. However, Azshara did not drown. The fish revealed itself to be N'Zoth, telling Azshara it watched her for its entire life. Offering visions of the Black Empire that N'Zoth ruled over in the past, it offered Azshara salvation, in exchange for becoming its servant.
Azshara convinced N'Zoth that she would not be a servant, but a queen to rule by the Old God's side. N'Zoth reluctantly agreed to the deal, granting Azshara more powers and transforming both the Light of the Lights and her Highborne into the naga.
The Creation of the Emerald Nightmare
4,500 years before the First War, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm would take branches from Nordrassil, the World Tree, and planted them over deposits of Saronite that began appearing over the world. The largest tree grew over a massive Saronite deposit in Grizzly Hills, and was named by Fandral Andrassil, or Crown of the Snow in Darnassian. Over time, bloody battles erupted in Northrend between the Taunka and the Forest Nymphs, two races not known for being bloodthirsty. The brutality of the battles between the two races led the druids of the Cenarion Circle to investigate.
What was discovered shocked the Cenarion Circle. Andassil's roots had reached deep into the soil. In fact, so deep, that they reached the ancient prison of the Old God Yogg-Saron, who managed to corrupt Andassil with its foul magics, driving all creatures nearby to go mad. The World Tree did not have the blessing of the Dragon Aspects, so it was known to be susceptible to corruption. This led the Cenarion Circle to the hard decision of destroying the tree, renaming its fallen stump Vordrassil, or Broken Crown in Darnassian.
Although Andassil had to be destroyed, it had enough force to stop the growth of Saronite. However, Yogg-Saron's corruption did not stop there, as he used Andassil's roots to create a doorway into the Emerald Dream, which could be used by the other Old Gods to enter into the Dream. This enabled the other Old Gods, including N'Zoth, to plant seeds that would eventually grow and begin what is called the Emerald Nightmare.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm
N'Zoth bid his time after the defeat of C'Thun and Yogg-Saron by adventurers. Remaining within his prison and untouched by the mortals, he knew that adventurers would also eventually come for him as they did for the other Old Gods. Being weaker than C'Thun and Yogg-Saron, N'Zoth knew his window of opportunity was closing.
With the mortals still recovering from the war against the Lich King, and the Dragon Aspects all suffering their own losses, N'Zoth knew it was time to act and usher the Hour of Twilight. N'Zoth acted by corrupting the black dragon Deathwing, infusing him with an immense dark power that would leave the former dragon with a very unstable form. This led Deathwing to usher in the Cataclysm, raising from his slumber deep within Deepholm and changing Azeroth forever.
N'Zoth had also reached to the Elemental Lords, ancient allies to the Old Gods during the Black Empire. Ragnaros and Al'Akir answered to this call, relishing the prospects of war once more.
From Warcraft: Chronicle Volume 3, pages 194-195:
Shrouded in an ocean of fevered dreams, among the bones of nameless horrors, N'Zoth remained untouched by the blades of mortals. The Old God was certain that Azeroth's champions would eventually seek it out and try to overwhelm it as they had done to C'Thun and Yogg-Saron.
N'Zoth was not afraid, but it did sense that a window of opportunity was fast closing. The world was wounded by the recent was against the Lich King. The ancient Dragon Aspects were consumed by their own struggles. Ysera had recently returned from the depths of the Emerald Dream, but she was not the same as she had once been. Prophetic visions bombarded her mind, and she found it difficult to tell what was real from what was not. Meanwhile, Nozdormu had disappeared in the timeways in search of the shadowy that was disrupting the past, present and future. Malygos was dead, leaving the blue dragonflight leaderless. Only Alexstrasza continued safeguarding Azeroth, but she was in dire need of rest after helping the Alliance and the Horde fight in Northrend.
The time to usher in the Hour of Twilight was now.
---
N'Zoth fed its own dark energy into Deathwing's heart, infusing the black Dragon Aspect with a power unlike any that he had ever known. This influx of strength made his form more unstable, and the magma that flowed through his veins threatened to erupt from his body and consume him entirely.
At N'Zoth's command, Twilight's Hammer cultists ventured into Deepholm to help Deathwing. They bolted elementium plates over the black Dragon Aspect's wounds to keep his body from tearing apart. The process was agonizing, and Deathwing often unleashed his wrath on the cultists.
As the cultists tended to Deathwing, N'Zoth reached out to its other ancient allies in the Elemental Plane. When the world was young, the Old Gods had enslaved Azeroth's destructive elemental spirits and used them as weapons. They would have a role to play in the Hour of Twilight as well. N'Zoth called on the elementals to prepare for war, but not all of them answered.
Two elemental rulers defied the Old God: Neptulon the Tidehunter and Therazane the Stonemother. In the ages since their enslavement, they had broken the shackles that had bound them to the Old Gods. They would not serve N'Zoth, and they would fight with all their fury against any attempts by the entity to enslave them.
The remaining elemental lords embraced N'Zoth's command. Ragnaros the Firelord and Al'Akir the Windlord relished the prospect of war, and their ties to the Old Gods remained unbroken. N'Zoth promised to release them from their prisons and let them roam free on Azeroth as they once had in ancient times.
Deathwing himself would be the key to their liberation. Once the black Dragon Aspect was ready for war, he would burst forth from Deepholm and tear a rift between the Elemental Plane and the surface of Azeroth. Deathwing would also serve as an extension of N'Zoth's will, commanding the Twilight's Hammer and the elementals and coordinating their attacks. The Old God made him believe that, by doing so, he could scour Azeroth of other dragons and claim the world as his own.
In truth, N'Zoth had no plans to reward Deathwing. The Old God would use the corrupted Dragon Aspect to restore the Black Empire to its former glory and shroud the world in shadow.
Once that was accomplished, N'Zoth would dispose of its servant.
Eventually, the Hour of Twilight was stopped as adventurers defeated both rogue Elemental Lords and Deathwing himself, ending the Cataclysm.
Legion and the Emerald Nightmare
N'Zoth's influence is deep within the Emerald Nightmare -
萨维斯
, the Lord of the Nightmare, served under the Old God;
伊格诺斯
, the wriggling mass that served as the heart of the corruption within the Nightmare, would speak in ominous quotes and after being defeated, he would announce that he was returning to Ny'alotha, the Sleeping City mentioned by many other Old God artifacts like the
尤格萨隆的谜之匣
and
萨拉托,血吼的亵渎之影
.
Il'gynoth whispers: N'Zoth... I journey... to Ny'alotha...
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: In the land of Ny'alotha there is only sleep...
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: In the sleeping city of Ny'alotha walk only mad things.
Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron whispers: Ny'alotha is a city of old, terrible, unnumbered crimes...
Xal'atoh, Desecrated Image of Gorehowl whispers: You will rest in Ny'alotha.
After defeating Xavius and supposedly clearing the Emerald Dream of corruption, there is one evidence that N'Zoth may still hold some influence over the helm. Deep within a cave on the healed Emerald Dream, there is a void flower, the
虚空残渣
. Ysera's spirit can be seen walking through the pond within the Emerald Dream towards the cave, almost as if guiding players toward the cave, which is not easily seen if you don't know where it is.
The Remnant of the Void within the Emerald Dream.
Shadow Priests with
萨拉塔斯,黑暗帝国之刃
equipped get a special whisper from the dagger when approaching the flower, mentioning that the last prison was weakened:
Xal'atath whispers: Almost completely gone, as if it never existed. But the rift is deep and vast, and somewhere down there it stirs. Something has changed, the last prison weakens. We must prepare.
Xal'atath makes many references to N'Zoth during the Emerald Nightmare raid, implying that the being who is imprisoned there is N'Zoth and his influence is getting stronger once again.
Battle for Azeroth
N'Zoth, although not directly mentioned, has great presence during the Stormsong Valley questline. Queen Azshara, one of N'Zoth's most notable followers, is directly responsible for capturing the Kul Tiran fleet by swaying the Tidesages to her side. In the
风暴神殿
dungeon, the lord of the valley,
斯托颂勋爵
, can be seen conversing with an image of Queen Azshara, talking about the Kul Tiran fleet. Stormsong is then directly corrupted by N'Zoth, transforming into a K'Thir, one of the most powerful followers of N'Zoth.
Lord Stormsong says: The Kul Tiran fleet is nearly yours, my queen.
Queen Azshara says: It would seem you have guests, Lord Stormsong.
---
Brother Pike yells: Master! Stop this madness at once! The Kul Tiran fleet must not fall to darkness!
Lord Stormsong yells: Fool! We must return to the sea, and Queen Azshara will grant us the power to do so!
Lord Stormsong says: For the last time, join me, or die.
Brother Pike says: Never.
Lord Stormsong yells: Then I shall cast your bodies to the blackened depths, to be crushed for eternity.
The Crucible of Storms
During the introduction questline to the Crucible of Storms raid, it is discovered that part of N'Zoth is actually inside the raid. Players unwittingly help N'Zoth by bringing three relics of power for him, as well as freeing Xal'atath from her dagger (
无心插柳
). Once all three relics are brought to Crucible of Storms, N'Zoth finally reveals himself.
The player is then "awarded" with the
恩佐斯之赐
, and now have an eye on top of their head. (
利刃扭转
)
After this encounter with N'Zoth, the player return to either Brother Pike or Queen Talanji to tell about what happened. Pike and Talanji then offer to cleanse the gift from the player, and they can either choose to have the gift cleansed from them. Cleansing the gift grants the player the
抽搐的眼球
toy, which gives a cosmetic version of the Gift of N'Zoth for 1 hour (
他在注视着你
/
他在注视着你
).
However, the player can also choose to keep the gift. While the gift is active, players can see who has also chosen to keep the gift, like a small secret society. If the player abandons the quests
他在注视着你
/
他在注视着你
, the player can actually hear N'Zoth whispering to them, showing that the gift is no joke. Players who keep the gift can constantly hear whispers in Shath'Yar, presumably coming from N'Zoth himself.
Crucible of Storms is highly set up as a test from N'Zoth, with the first boss encounter, the Restless Cabal, congratulating you on defeating them. Canonically, the Horde defeats N'Zoth's lieutenant, Uu'nat, Harbinger of the Void first, receiving the empty Blade of the Black Empire and turning it in to Sylvanas, who sees a glimmer of hope for the Horde in the shadowy blade (
黑暗之刃
).
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: The Alliance believes that by striking down Rastakhan and decimating the Zandalari fleet, they have broken us. That the Horde will soon crumble.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Fools. The boy-king has lied to himself and his people. He hasn't the faintest inkling of what he's truly up against.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: War is a living thing. It writhes, it grows, twisting and turning until its final form is revealed.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: This war is about to shift yet again. And it will be this blade that guides our way to victory.
The Alliance eventually manages to also defeat Uu'nat, being received with similar reactions from N'Zoth's minions, but instead finding an echo of the Blade of the Black Empire. Upon reporting the grim news to King Anduin, he correctly deducts that the Horde managed to get ahold of the Blade, now in Sylvanas' hands (
失踪的利刃
).
Anduin Wrynn: When Sylvanas Windrunner became warchief, I knew we would not be friends... but I didn't want us to be enemies. Then came the massacre in Arathi... and the Burning of Teldrassil.
Anduin Wrynn: It's clear she does not fight for Azeroth. She doesn't even fight for the Horde. She wages war upon life itself.
Anduin Wrynn: We are so close to ending this conflict and forging a lasting peace. But if Sylvanas uncovers some new weapon that allows her to keep fighting...
Anduin Wrynn: No. We must discover what she's after... and stop whatever madness she seeks to unleash upon us.
Rise of Azshara
The introduction cinematic to Nazjatar shows that Nathanos, who is leading the remnants of the Horde fleet through the seas, is being guided by the Blade of the Black Empire. When the sea opens below the Alliance and Horde fleets, Nathanos is the only one that shows no surprise, meaning he likely knew what would happen and this is all part of Sylvanas' plans.
Azshara can be seen interacting with a tentacle-shaped shadow, saying it would be freed soon.. As she mocks the shadow, talking about imprisonment and powerlessness, the shadow is likely N'Zoth itself.
Also in
Rise of Azshara
, during the events of Magni's questline, it is discovered that the Emerald Dream is corrupted once more, with the Remnant of the Void taking root and growing into a large plant.
The events of Patch 8.2 explain many of the Il'gynoth whispers, which we've detailed
in this post
.
The Eternal Palace
In the Azshara fight in the Eternal Palace raid, we fight Queen Azshara right in the Circle of Stars, N'Zoth's prison. During the fight, Azshara taunts the adventurers with how they were all led to there unwittingly by Magni, in his attempts to heal Azeroth. In the fight, Azshara uses the powers from the Heart of Azeroth to weaken N'Zoth's prison.
Azshara: You see the truth now, don't you, heroes? Every move you've made has been according to my will.
Azshara: That lumbering dwarf believed you could save Azeroth by empowering your shiny little Heart. The gift of a sleeping titan.
Azshara: Yes, a titan's heart was exactly what was needed. Not to heal the world... but to shatter the prison of a god.
Azshara: The ritual nears completion. The Black Empire rises... and the world awaits its true queen.
Once Azshara is finally defeated, the chains keeping N'Zoth restrained are finally gone, with N'Zoth breaking free from his prison. As N'Zoth flees from the Circle of Stars, he claims Azshara's body, and ominously tells the adventurers that all eyes shall now open before disappearing.
Visions of N'Zoth
After N'Zoth's escape, Magni and Wrathion join forces to start searching for N'Zoth's whereabouts. It is discovered that N'Zoth sent his servants to meddle with the Forge of Origination, within the Halls of Origination in Uldum. N'Zoth is able to closely follow in the footsteps of the adventurer, even going as far as taunting them as they journey to the Halls of Origination in order to reestablish the Forge of Origination.
N'Zoth's ability to see what the adventurer is doing is also what causes an assault led by his forces on the recently restored Vale of Eternal Blossoms and the Mogu'shan Vaults, as players look for both allies in Pandaria and to use the Engine of Nalak'sha to fix the Forge of Origination. N'Zoth's influence in both areas is so big that he is able to assault players with Horrific Visions and change the aesthetics of an entire area.
Within assaulted areas, adventurers are able to find portals leading to Ny'alotha, the Waking City. The seat of the Black Empire serves as Battle for Azeroth's final raid, where players will confront N'Zoth in a showdown for the destiny of not only Azeroth, but the universe itself.
In the end it is Ny’alotha, the Waking City, where players gain access to the corrupted realm and N’Zoth himself. Guarded by all different kinds of nightmarish creatures including aqir, corrupted amalgams or void hounds, N’Zoth can be found in the center of Ny’alotha, ready to infest Azeroth’s mind with his twisted visions.
We also learn from N’Zoth about the bargain between Azshara and Sylvanas, which in the end shaped the Fourth War and also the fight against N’Zoth:
Azshara: We have a bargain, then. I will bring both fleets crashing to the ocean floor, and your champion will deliver the dagger to me.
Sylvanas: And in turn, you will have the key required to free the Old God from his bonds... and leave him vulnerable.
Azshara: You wound me, Warchief. After all, I am as dedicated to my master as you are to your subjects.
Sylvanas: Indeed. Just be certain that once you have what you need, you dispose of your guests. Let none of the "heroes" escape.
Azshara: I admire your ruthlessness, Windrunner. It seems our interests are aligned... at present.
Sylvanas: At present.
Azshara: Treacherous Banshee! Do you think I am blind to the darkness you seek to unleash?
To eventually defeat the Old God, players use the power of the titan forges as well as the Heart of Azeroth to strike at the very heart of Ny’alotha.

N'Zoth and Sylvanas
In the questline
暗影猎手
, we help Vol'jin solve the mystery of who told him to appoint Sylvanas as Warchief. It appears that a dark spirit told Vol'jin to appoint her, and he felt forsaken by the Loa. Read the full questline
here
.
Vol'jin: Dis time, I need to bring ya to my side. We gonna walk da shadows between life and death, see if we can't uncover some clues. Be careful and be armed. Not everything on dis side wants us to find answers.
Vol'jin: I remember dyin'. I remember glimpsin' da Other Side.
Vol'jin: I was expectin' ta see ol' Bwonsamdi, or Shadra, or Hir'reek... any of da loa.
Vol'jin: Dere was a presence. Somethin' movin' in da shadows. Somethin' powerful.
Vol'jin: I remember it takin' me somewhere, but da memory of where be hidden from me. Ta keep me from sharin' da truth...
Vol'jin: Da truth dat it might not be da loa who wanted Sylvanas to be warchief, but somethin' far more powerful.
Speculation points to the Old Gods influencing Vol'jin, as Sylvanas ushered in a new era of warfare that weakens both factions.
At the
BlizzCon 2018 Q&A
, a player asked how Garrosh and Sylvanas are different. Blizzard replied:
These are my favorite kind of questions--that I can't answer. Well, the story is not done. And there's much left to discover, to explore. I will say this...If I were Sylvanas and looking at what Garrosh had wrought across the world, I'd probably think "Garrosh was an amateur."
What if she'll make Garrosh look like an amateur by tapping into more power of the Old Gods? Instead of just digging up a heart and destroying a zone with the remnants of an Old God, her actions could bring some of them fully back.
Sylvanas
references her endgame
in Patch 8.2, implying there is more than just the faction war. Based on our
analysis of her motives
, we think her goal is to master death, which could set up a clash with N'Zoth, looking to revive the Black Empire.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Sail out with what remains of our fleet. The blade will guide you to the rendezvous.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Casualties on both sides will be substantial. Consider this an opportunity to weed out the disloyal.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: The threads we have woven with such care will soon be drawn together. The war is serving its purpose. Stay focused on the endgame. You know what is to come.
N'Zoth in Hearthstone
N'Zoth's introduction
in
Whispers of the Old Gods
gave us notable pieces of lore, N'Zoths canon appearance in WoW, and insights into the Old God's personality.
Very little is certain about N’Zoth—most beings on Azeroth don’t even know its name, much less what it looks like. Scraps of obscure lore claim that the Old God has been imprisoned beneath the darkest depths of the ocean for millennia beyond counting. There are also whispers that N’Zoth desires nothing more than to twist what was once noble and pure to its own inscrutable ends. Ultimately, most of what is “known” about this most insidious of beings is mere speculation.
Still, looking at the evidence, it seems like N’Zoth feels a compulsive need to redecorate, and has the aesthetic sensibilities of someone that’s super into skulls, black leather, and knee-high platform boots. Emerald Dream? How about Emerald Nightmare. Neltharion the Earth-Warder? Nah, let’s go with DEATHWING THE DESTROYER! Prissy Night Elf nobility throwing a hissy fit? BAM! You get a snake body and actual hissing! Yes, it’s rumored that N’Zoth is responsible for twisting the Emerald Dream, corrupting one of Azeroth’s most powerful dragons, and mutating the Highborne into the despicable Naga . . . but it’s just getting started.
From this blog, the following occurred in WoW:
N'Zoth was involved in corrupting the Emerald Dream, which turned out to be the first raid in Legion. Xal'atath whispers the following things in the raid:
Xal'atath whispers: It appears the prison of N’zoth is not as strong as it once was. What you see is a tiny growth of the behemoth that may yet consume your world.
Xal'atath whispers: A great dragon, bent to the will of Xavius, who serves the God of the Deep. Instead of breathing life, she consumes all around her.
Xal'atath whispers: Another seed of corruption planted in death. An unquiet spirit will wander in anger and grow in pain. Easy prey for the God of the Deep.
Xal'atath whispers: Xavius, running from one master to the next, scrambling for power, yet defeated again and again. The God of the Deep picks a poor champion? Or, is there something else at play?
Xal'atath whispers: Almost completely gone, as if it never existed. But the rift is deep and vast, and somewhere down there it stirs. Something has changed, the last prison weakens. We must prepare
N'Zoth corrupted Deathwing leading up to Cataclysm, as part of the plan to usher in the Hour of Twilight. We learned about the exact involvement in
Chronicle Volume 3
:
Shrouded in an ocean of fevered dreams, among the bones of nameless horrors, N'Zoth remained untouched by the blade of mortals. The Old God was certain that Azeroth's champions would eventually seek it out and try to overwhelm it as they had done to C'Thun and Yogg-Saron. N'Zoth was not afraid, but it did sense that a window of opportunity was fast closing.
N'Zoth fed its own dark energy into Deathwing's heart, infusing the black Dragon Aspect with a power unlike any that he had ever known. This influx of strength made his form more unstable, and the magma that flowed through his veins threatened to erupt from his body and consume his entirely.
N'Zoth was directly responsible for mutating Azshara and her Highborne into the Naga. We learned about this event a bit in the
Sharas'dal Artifact Book Text
, but only learned how the deal went down between Azshara and N'Zoth in
Warbringers: Azshara
. This cinematic also revealed that N'Zoth was imprisoned in the ocean, and in Patch 8.1.5, we fight in the Crucible of Storms raid, which exposes a piece of N'Zoth.
N'Zoth also wants to "twist what is noble and pure," which fits into the general speculation that the faction conflict is orchestrated by the Old Gods, designed to weaken and twist us so we are easy prey.
Previous to
Whispers of the Old Gods
, we didn't know what N'Zoth looked like. With the card art revealed in 2016, Ben Brode confirmed they
worked with the WoW team
and that the image is
intended to be canonical for WoW
.
Should more of the
Whispers of the Old Gods
expansion predict Battle for Azeroth, we could be looking at the resurrection of one or more Old Gods, notably the return of Y'Shaarj. Read more in

Finally after about a week since I chose to keep this "eye of N'zoth", I have begun hearing his voice. In what I have read to be the language of the old gods. It seems to come to me more when I use a portal and now as I am levitating in the water off the western coast of Zuldazzar. I am excited to see where this leads.
