Are you new to World of Warcraft? Will you be starting your very first character and be leveling for the very first time? Are you coming back to the game from taking a break and wondering how best to tackle leveling and all the things that have changed? Congratulations, either way you are about to step into a new and exciting world. Here are our most
Frequently Asked Questions
about leveling in
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands
.
What changed in Shadowlands?
The leveling process got a complete facelift, revamp, and reimagining for Shadowlands. Instead of starting a new character and slogging through outdated content until you reach level 110 and then getting to see the new expansion from 110 to 120, you will speed through a cohesive storyline from level 1 to level 50, and then hit the Shadowlands for your last 10 levels for a new max level of 60.
What did change in Shadowlands for leveling? The short answer, everything. The longer answer:
All characters were assigned
levels based on a 1 to 50 scale
rather than a 1 to 120 Scale. All level 120 characters became level 50. Those below 120 were assigned their new level based on a level squish policy implemented by Blizzard.
The
Leveling paradigm
was reinvented. Instead of leveling through all of the expansions, you will level in a starting zone until you are level 10, and then you will level through a single expansion's content.
The starting zones for all races are still available for levels 1 to 10, and there is also a new 1 to 10 starting Zone,
Exile's Reach
.
Heirloom gear
no longer gives experience bonuses. Those have been replaced with other bonuses useful for leveling.
Saving best for last here:
Threads of Fate
is a new Adventure Mode leveling system that allows alts to level without following the linear storyline.

What are the best/fastest Classes for Leveling?
So you want to get to the top as fast as possible and you don't care what Class you are? Or you want the Class that is the most fun? Each Class has unique abilities that make them fun to play while leveling.
Durability
: Tank Classes are really nice for leveling content because they are robust and have plenty of defensive abilities so you can potentially reduce the number of "death runs" you need to make - and that saves time. They still usually put out a decent amount of damage too so they don't slow you down there either; tanks excel at pulling multiple mobs and mowing them all down. And if you like Dungeons, tanks are always in demand.
Classes that have Tank specs are Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Druid, Monk, Paladin, and Warrior.
Mobility
: Classes with excellent mobility are super fun and excel at getting you from mob to mob and from quest to quest with as little fuss as possible. While all Classes have some mobility abilities, there are a few Classes that excel.
Highly mobile Classes are Demon Hunter, Druid, Monk, and Rogue.
Best Buddies
: Several Classes have the option to have a Pet. Pets keep you company and can often tank mobs for you so that you can get on with the business of unloading damage. Some Pets will even loot for you.
Classes with Pet options are Death Knight, Hunter, Mage, and Warlock.
Staying Alive
: If you like running Dungeons, having a Heals option is a great way to avoid long DPS queues. While Healers can be less efficient for solo questing, they are terrific for group questing. All Healing Classes also have DPS options so you can switch things up for solo work, or just for a change of pace,
Classes with heals specs are Druid, Monk, Paladin, Priest, and Shaman.
Sneaking About
: Classes with Stealth can sneak you past mobs and get you to your objective without having to kill a bunch of mobs. Ideally. For straight questing, Stealth is an excellent ability to be able to take advantage of.
Classes that have permanent Stealth are Druid and Rogue. Classes with more limited, yet still useful Stealth options are Hunter and Mage.
Gathering
: If you like Gathering, there is one Class that excels in this area, and if you are Horde, a race that makes it even better.
The best Class for Gathering is Druid. Tauren Druids get an efficiency boost for picking herbs that makes Herbing super quick and Highmountain Tauren get the same for Mining. Worgen get the same boost for Skinning, but unfortunately Skinning does not grant Experience on its own.
The best Class for Gathering is Druid.
Travel
: Getting about in the world can be extremely time consuming. If you are looking for a Class that can travel about Azeroth and beyond with the minimum of fuss, Mage is for you. Portals and Teleports are the Mages bread and butter. If you happen to be Alliance, a nod does need to be given to the Dark Iron Dwarves who have

What is Experience?
Experience is the system by which your character will increase in power, learn new abilities, and be able to tackle more difficult content. Experience is earned through a points system and measured in Levels. Most things that you do while you are leveling will earn you Experience Points. Rested Experience allows you to gain more experience from killing monsters and therefore complete levels more quickly.
For Shadowlands, Blizzard squished levels, implementing a 1 to 60 from start to maximum level paradigm instead of the previous 1 to 120 levels. This restructuring adjusted the amount of experience required to reach each level. The current experience values for Levels 21 through 59 are as follows:
For more details about Rested Experience and how to make sure you are getting the buff, check out our guide:
Rested Experience
What are Heirlooms?
Heirloom Gear is Account-bound gear that you can buy. Buying a piece adds it to your Heirloom interface. Any of your characters can then create that piece of gear for themselves. Heirloom gear levels with you as you level, and provides Set bonuses to help your leveling process.
For more information on Heirloom Gear, check out our guides.

Where do you start Leveling
The first time you create a character and log in you will start the game in the
Exile's Reach
scenario. Subsequent Level 1 characters can choose whether to start in the Exile's Reach scenario or in their Racial Starting Zone. Death Knights and Demon Hunters start at level 8 in their Class starting cenarios. Allied Races start at level 10 and can choose where to proceed from there.

What is the best Continent for Leveling?
Once you reach Level 10 you can pick which Expansion you'd like to level through. While "best" is subjective, arguably what you are looking for is the one you enjoyed most, or the one that takes the least amount of time. But if you want a few pointers, here you go:
Draenor
:
Warlords of Draenor
has a great deal of utility for Leveling. The Garrison with its own Hearthstone and material generation is super convenient and Garrison Outposts provide very helpful Zone abilities. Draenor is also full of Rares and Treasures, and it introduced the Bonus Objective areas.
For speed and convenience, Draenor is #1
.
Pandaria
:
Mists of Pandaria
is a fun and cohesive expansion for Leveling. Not as fast as Draenor, Pandaria still offers some utility in the Farm and plenty of Treasures and Rares for that little extra experience boost. And it is beautiful.
For aesthetics, Pandaria is hard to beat
(if you are into that).
Kul'Tiras or Zandalar
:
Battle for Azeroth
takes advantage of lessons learned from its predecessors with Rares, Treasures, and Bonus Objective areas. The storylines are cohesive, but none of the Expansions Systems really play into Leveling much.
The Broken Isles
: In
Legion
, the Class Order Halls offer a nice base of operations and the extra Hearthstone to Dalaran is a great bonus. You also get some versatility by being able to choose your order of Zones but overall Legion offers little that is special for leveling.
Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor
:
Cataclysm
revamped the Classic continents, and added new content and Zones as you approach the end of the Leveling process. Stormwind and Orgrimmar are your base of operations which can be really convenient but overall Cataclysm offers little that is special for leveling.
Northrend and Outland
: Both
Burning Crusade
and
Wrath of the Lich King
are suffering somewhat for being older content. Leveling can be slow and a little grindy, but for
pure nostalgia
these are had to beat. If you want to remember the way it was, revisit some amazing stories, and you don't care that it takes a little longer, either of these will work nicely for you.
Ultimately, what is best for you is up to you. To help you figure out which Leveling Expansion is The One, check out our detailed Chromie Time guide:
Chromie Time
What is War Mode and should you turn it on?
War Mode
is a player vs player mode that you can choose to turn on by going to your
Specialization & Talents
user interface. It is accessible when you reach Level 20. The somewhat subjective) Pros and Cons:
Pros
Cons
War Mode offers you an extra Talent at Levels 20, 30, and 40.
While you have War Mode turned on, players of the other faction will be attackable.
The rewards and experience that you earn will be increased by 10% over those earned in Normal mode.
You will be in a discreet phase, along with other War Mode active players.
There are quests and objectives with unique rewards that are only available in War Mode
If you like PvP, this is you!
While you have War Mode turned on, you will be attackable to players of the other faction.
While it can be turned off any time you are in a Rest Area, it can only be turned on while you are in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
You can't see or interact with friends who are in Normal mode, although you can still group with them for instances.
Rares and other mobs that are World tag in Normal mode are Faction tag in War Mode.
If you hate PvP, do your sanity a favor and just don't.
Weigh the advantages and the disadvantages. If it seems like fun to you, go for it. You can always change your mind later as many times as you like.
Is doing Dungeons while Questing good?
This is a pretty subjective question. If by "good" you mean efficient, the answer is...well, sometimes. If you like the lore and the storylines, or if you enjoy group content, then yes, doing Dungeons is good. If you prefer to just move at your own pace and not be bothered, stick to questing. If you love Tanking or Healing,

Is Solo Questing or Group Questing better?
This is a pretty subjective question. If by "better" you mean more efficient, the answer is mostly, Group Questing. While you are in a group you will be earning a small bonus to experience. If you are with a like minded group and you are having fun, the answer is unequivocally Group Questing. If you are grouped with people who are moving faster or slower, who want to enjoy the story and quests differently than you, or who level like they are solo with no consideration for those in their group, then no, no bonus is worth that. Drop group and Solo Quest.
How do you get a Mount?
Mounts increase your outside movement speed and they look cool. You most certainly want to get one as soon as you reach Level 10. Riding Trainers and Mount Vendors are located near the Flight Paths in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. As you level you will be able to increase your mount spped and, eventually, fly.

What are Addons and which ones are useful for Leveling?
Addons are third party programs that can be installed into WoW and run with it. These Addons can do anything anyone has been able to think up to help them play the game - and what helps them may just help you too. What is Recruit a Friend?
Recruit a Friend is a program run by Blizzard by which you and a friend can get unique bonuses and added experience for playing together. One of you needs to have an active account and the other needs to create a new account after being invited to do so by the first. The unique awards include Mounts, Pets, Game time and more. It is the gift that keeps on giving. For more information about Recruit a friend and how it works, along with details on the rewards, check out our detailed guide.

The sentence is left out incomplete. i guess the point is that if you like tanking and healing dungeons are for you.

Some allied race also get experience by killing certain mobs. Like the Lightforged you want to be in Outland. Also if it is still the same tomorrow I would recommend this. See if you have a BFA Invasion if so do that first. Once done see if the Legion one is up. Once they are done if available go back to your own zone to keep going on. This is one option if you want to level as quickly as possible.

On the topic of Travel.
I'd say the DK deserves a mention too. Their portal moves you to the Ebon Hold, which currently is sitting outside Dalaran with a portal to it. From all my classes it's my DK on which I get to places fastest (and no I don't have a mage and do agree they are better to travel around).
And, the mole machine is fun, but it has a 30 minute cooldown and you can only travel to mole machines that you have unlocked (by going to their spawn locations at least once). I've did a class change on my Dark Iron Dwarf because this neat travel mode was far from what I had expected.

"While Healers can be less efficient for solo question, they are terrific for group questing." should be "solo questing"
still a great article.

I think I am unclear on how Chromie time works. Does it restart the story line or does it not if you have already done part or all of an expansion?

I would love a GUIDE for guides. I get questions from NEW (and returning players) about things like at WHAT level does a class/spec get WHAT ability and I can't seem to find them. (I used to see them around but now, everyone concentrates on end-game). I get that mnost people spend time on end-game, but for someone who doesn't play a class, (or for a brand new player) it would be nice to get the simple answers.
If anyone knows resources where I can get this - just simple lists of when certain classes and specs in retail get specific abilities, would very much appreciate it. There are very few guides for Guides (in the Newcomer Chat Mentor system) and something like that would be lovely.
