How to Play Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The Unholy Death Knight is a master of undead pets and deadly diseases. We utilize a core rotation of
,
,
and
.
costs two
Runes
and applies 2-3
s.
Runes
are our primary resource. We have a total of 6 that regenerate over 10 seconds (decreasing with haste) once used. A maximum of three can regenerate at any given time.
is a secondary "resource" acting as a debuff on any target we fight and
spends these
s by popping them on our target, dealing damage. Spending Runes generates our third resource,
Runic Power
, which we spend on
. Finally,
is used to keep up our DoT,
.
The Unholy Death Knight wields a great 2-handed weapon that we enchant with our powerful Runeforges. We excel in AoE scaling, reaching places other classes can only dream of. We have been nerfed in this regard in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch, but the potential is definitely still there. We also do well for short single target burst, given that we have our powerful
ready!
The Unholy Death Knight is the master of death, magic defense, and shadow. We can control undead minions through
, raise fallen allies with
and summon hordes of the dead to do our bidding with
,
,
and
. We are masters of magical defense, both negating magical debuffs and absorbing magical damage through
, and providing great magical defense zones for our allies with
. Finally, we infect our enemies with the shadowy diseases,

How Different Do Unholy Death Knights Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Unholy has seen multiple iterations over a couple of weeks. The core rotation is very similar but we now have
as well as access to our old execute
through a talent.
is now baseline which is such a great change! One big change to our damage distribution is the fact that pets are now affected by our mastery. This will significantly increase the fraction of our damage coming from pets!
has been reworked and now requires much more active play when applying. It no longer passively infects everything over 6 seconds! The effective duration is shorter and we generally need to commit a lot more GCDs to the spell. Luckily,
now also applies
which helps a lot with the application process!
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
When it comes to GCD changes, Unholy is mostly affected by the lack of them. No abilities have been taken off the GCD for unholy (even
that is off the GCD for Frost and Blood is on the GCD for unholy). The changes for Unholy has been focused on adding effects to abilities that make them feel more impactful. This includes AoE damage on
, on-hit damage plus wound generation for
and
spread for
. I'd personally like to see some abilities come off the GCD put this approach does help to some degree.
New Abilities and Talents for Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
With the pre-patch, we're seeing the return of some old abilities, as well as a PVP-talent becoming baseline. Below is a list of all the spells, as well as their impact for us!
- The PvP talent is now baseline with 20% damage reduction instead of 60%. 20% magic DR to your Raid is
incredibly
strong and will make this spell a huge addition to our utility kit!
- Another PvP talent gone baseline, this provides a nice addition to both utility and survivability. We can dodge multiple forms of CC and heal ourselves with the Leech. Finally, since we turn undead, we can also use
on ourselves to heal, something that's useful in a few niche scenarios!
(Talent) - An execute that we last saw years ago, now a new talent! It's really good to see Unholy's kit being supplemented with an execute. It's a bit unfortunate that it's on a resource-generating row but still really good to see!
(Talent) -
on steroids, a new talent in our penultimate row. Scales really well in both Single Target and AoE and creates synergy with everything that reduces our
cooldown.
(Talent) - Unholy Frenzy, but with an actual impact on the GCD. This is the renamed version of our old talent that feels great to press. It deals damage and does something on the button-press, great change in my opinion.
5 new Runeforges- It's awesome to see some additions to an otherwise stale corner of the Death Knight ability kit. However, it doesn't seem like anything will dethrone
in end-game PVE content.
- With 20 extra Runic Power and a Runic power generation increase, this runeforge is obviously targeted at resource generation. It helps to reduce downtime in our rotation and to avoid capping resources. It will make your rotation feel better, but not do a lot more damage. A Frost Death Knight would find this more useful since it directly helps to increase the duration of
.
- Increased damage to
as well as a heal when your health falls low, this Runeforge is obviously catered towards Blood Death Knights. It might see play in situations where survivability is of utmost importance, but even then,
probably heals for more overall.
- A fully defensive Runeforge that really doesn't synergize with Unholy at all. Might see play for Blood DKs or in PvP?
- A very thematic Runeforge that inherits the mechanics of an Artifact Trait from Legion,
, although unfortunately, it's a bit worse since it's only your main ghoul that applies the debuffs. Lots of possibly useful outcomes when using this Runeforge, but unfortunately not any significantly good ones in the current state. Would need a buff to be competitive.
- This rune has a very specific niche, leveling, and it does it really well. I'd recommend using this rune while leveling in any content. Movement speed after every kill as well as a nice heal will keep you healthy and allow swift obliteration of your enemies. The fact that it requires killing blow makes it pretty much useless in raids. For Mythic+ you ideally want the buff at the start of the pack, marginalizing the Runeforge in those situations as well.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
and
now only hit up to a total of 5 targets when you're standing in your
/
/
(total damage was previously capped at 20 targets).
now only hits up to 8 targets with the splash damage (total damage was previously capped at 20 targets).
This change is in line with multiple other caps that Blizzard has introduced to specs across the board. The big question now is how much it will affect our damage output in AoE. The big change will be in relation to the "wound build" in AoE, where we utilize the combination of
and
. Other builds simply see a simple scaling change to their
window (
and
damage caps at 5 targets). There's a small effect related to the decreased Runic Power gain from popping fewer wounds in AoE, it's tiny though.
First of all, let's consider the change to
. By capping it at 8 targets, Unholy now scales quadratically up to 9 targets, and then linearly from that point. Previously this was quadratically up to 21 targets, and linearly beyond that point. The damage certainly scales less drastically, but still scales well. It is important to note here is that it never stops scaling. This is a clear advantage compared to pretty much every single other spec out there.
The change to
and
is more difficult to digest. Our ability to generate
s in AoE hasn't been impacted (only increased through the addition of Legendary effects). The change only affects our ability to burst these wounds we generate. Let's consider a scenario where we use 6
s in a single
(quite realistic). That has the potential of bursting 30
s; a significant amount. The damage is no longer as front-loaded as in BFA (you could burst 30+ wounds in 2 GCDs), but the overall damage output isn't necessarily limited.
and
are "smart" when used in your
, meaning they will prioritize targets that have
s on them. This allows you to effectively burst almost all your wounds on targets!
A large pull also tends to contain targets of variable health pools. The initial damage of your burst will help to kill targets with low hit points, thus triggering the wounds they hold automatically. Finally, we will generally require more uses of
and
to pop all the
s in our
. This indirectly leaves less room for using other abilities (
is the main one here) if we want to ensure that all
s are burst. Our damage is therefore way less efficient when you consider the damage output per GCD and there's a larger risk of overcapping Runic Power.
The change will certainly decrease our ability to burst wounds, but we still hold the tools required to enable our insane scaling and can potentially realize the damage in the majority of scenarios. If I were to address our scaling, I'd limit the target cap of our pet's
. It's the source of the insane scaling through the uncapped generation of
s . By limiting our
window, the gameplay of spreading
s through tab-targeting with
becomes unrewarding and we potentially reach scenarios where we might not even utilize the
and
interaction with
.
How Strong is Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
The Unholy Death Knight is looking strong in the pre-patch. We've got a lot more raid utility through
and our single target has been significantly buffed! The Mastery change as well as the rework to
are big for our single target output. We've lost some of our AoE scaling but I still think we'll be the kings of big AoE!
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Unholy Death Knight?
The Unholy Death Knight will see much more passive damage on single target, an unfortunate consequence of the Mastery change that removes agency from the player. Our Mythic+ gameplay might see a strong shift away from
and
to a build focused more on direct linear damage that provides more single target output. We've generally received quite a big increase in our downtime, making the spec feel much slower and clunkier in the pre-patch.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Unholy Death Knight in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Losing Corruption is of course bad for us. Unholy really loved Haste so most people will see a
significant
slow-down when the pre-patch hits. The spec will feel sluggish and it'll take some getting used to.

The Mastery change will push this talent forward
