What Tank spec should you play in Shadowlands? Choosing a class or spec can be a really difficult question, especially for returning players, as so much has changed for some classes during the Shadowlands testing cycle. From the
Unpruning
to the
GCD changes
, most classes are receiving new gameplay tools in the expansion, not to mention those which have had their spells and talents overhauled entirely!
On this page, you will learn more about each Tank spec's gameplay in Shadowlands, to help you decide if a certain spec is a perfect choice for you or not. Below each description, we provide links to read more about each specialization in our class guides, where we will delve into the strengths of each specialization, as well as describe the impact of changes like new abilities, AoE Caps, and GCD Changes.
Note that these guides are
not a Tier List
, as we won't be delving into comparisons between specs. While pre-patch is around the corner, there's still some time until Shadowlands launches, and Blizzard is still making adjustments to classes, covenants, and legendaries, all of which will influence any attempt to rank classes. We just hope to show, through speaking about each spec's strengths and gameplay, what makes that spec unique when compared to its peers.
Remember that, at the end of the day, the choice of what to play is yours and yours alone.
How Blood Death Knight Plays in Shadowlands
To get into playing a Blood Death Knight in Shadowlands, all you need to do is have a Death Knight, a two-handed weapon, and the willingness to tank for your friends. Really, that's all it takes!
Death Knights are one of the two tanks in World of Warcraft focused around
reactively
healing some of the damage they take, instead of outright preventing it. Our entire toolkit revolves around a number of small cooldowns, and the use
灵界打击
to undo most of the damage we take (or, more precisely, 25% of the damage we took for the 5s prior to actually using it).
Our resources are
Runes
, regenerating at a static pace, and
Runic Power
, acquired by spending runes. The conversion factor from one to the other depends on the spell you used to spend runes - most spells, with the exception of
心脏打击
, provide 10 RP per Rune; Heart Strike provides up to 25. Runic power is used to fuel
灵界打击
.
As a hero class, we now start at level
8
, down from 55. All races can be death knights, and the race choice, outside of very specific encounters, is more of a cosmetic choice than a performance one.

How Vengeance Demon Hunter Plays in Shadowlands
Vengeance Demon Hunter is a dual-wielding leather tank specialization with a mix of damage reduction and self-healing with high mobility and enemy control. While we are not fully based around preventing damage like Protection Warriors, our toolkit does allow us to reduce significant amounts of damage. In addition, we are one of the two specs that can heal based on damage taken, with the other being Blood Death Knights.
The core of Vengeance is based around generating and spending
灵魂残片
s, which heal us for 6% of our damage taken in the 5 seconds before they are absorbed. We have a resource bar comprised of
Fury
, but surprisingly, it is not our main resource and in most cases, can safely be ignored.
New Demon Hunters will start at level 8 rather than level 1 due to being a hero class and are restricted to being either Blood Elf if Horde or Night Elf if Alliance.

How Guardian Druid Plays in Shadowlands
Whether you are a returning Guardian Druid or a new Bear cub rising in power, welcome to the Bear gang! It's time to carry your friends in dungeons and raids with your thick iron-like fur and powerful swipes.
Guardian Druids are one of the best mitigation tanks in the game with
铁鬃
being our main mitigation spell. This allows us to easily reach armor cap, reducing physical damage intake by a massive amount. Any damage that does get through our thick fur is quickly healed up by
狂暴回复
and the combination of these two spells make us a very sturdy tank. We take a steady amount of damage and do an excellent job at smoothing damage intake overall, that along with our large health pools make Guardian Druid a tank that healers love to heal.
Our resource is
Rage
. We have a rage bar while in
熊形态
and our tanking process heavily revolves around the ebb and flow of rage generation, using rage generating spells like
裂伤
and
痛击
to allow us to use our tanking spells for mitigation in the form of
铁鬃
and
狂暴回复
.
We primarily deal damage with our 2 damage over time spells
月火术
and
痛击
, along with our AoE filler spell
横扫
. Our single target abilities are
裂伤
, which generates Rage and
重殴
which can be used to dump excess rage.
As the Druid class, we have access to one of the coolest things in World of Warcraft,
Shapeshifting!
This allows us to shift into multiple different forms such as
熊形态
,
猎豹形态
, and
旅行形态
to access their unique powers and abilities like an instant cast flying form with
旅行形态
or stealth in cat form with
潜行
.

How Brewmaster Monk Plays in Shadowlands
Brewmaster Monks are a tank spec. In the eight years since they were introduced in Mists of Pandaria, Brewmaster Monks have consistently been one of the top tank specs in the game, and they are usually very well-represented at the highest levels of raiding.
Unlike other tanks, Monks
醉拳
damage, spreading out a large portion of all damage taken as a 10-second DoT (13 seconds with talents). This gives Monks an enormous advantage at living through burst damage, and burst damage is generally what kills tanks. Monks also have
活血酒
and
天神酒
, allowing them to clear a portion of Staggered damage and shield themselves from damage. This provides Monks with both reactive and proactive defensive tools and gives them the most complete toolkit of any tank. Their collection of defensive cooldowns is fairly limited, but that is more than made up for by Stagger.
Offensively, Brewmaster Monks play around using
醉酿投
on cooldown, and because their primary skill is an AoE, their offensive ability priorities don’t change significantly between single target and AoE. Brewmaster Monks also have exceptional mobility, arguably the best of any tank spec.
It’s a spec with a ton of strengths and very few weaknesses.

How Protection Paladin Plays in Shadowlands
With the veil between Azeroth and the Shadowlands shattered, Holy Warriors of the Light will rise up to defend the innocent people of Azeroth from the great beyond. The forces of Death are on the march to conquer our world and it's up to you to stop it. Will you answer the call?
As a Paladin, you will wield the light to support your allies and smite your foes.
A simple description of the core gameplay and the fun of the Protection Paladin is throwing your shield around like Captain America, slamming your enemies with your shield, and making sure your allies survive the dangerous moments that come up in combat.
The basics are:
Use
复仇者之盾
,
审判
, and
正义之锤
to build threat and Holy Power
Use
正义盾击
or
荣耀圣令
to spend Holy Power and keep yourself alive
Use Blessings like
自由祝福
,
牺牲祝福
, or abilities like
圣光闪现
to support your team
Use
制裁之锤
or
超度邪恶
to control your enemies and their actions
Use unique utility like
圣盾术
or
保护祝福
to make yourself immune to damage and debuffs
Select talent options like
破咒祝福
and
守护者之手
for an even greater depth of support
Paladins start at level 1 and can be several races on both Alliance and Horde. If you’re just starting out, the race will be a cosmetic choice that won’t affect your ability to tank. This call to service goes out to everyone; Human, Blood Elf, Draenei, Tauren, and Dwarf alike.

How Protection Warrior Plays in Shadowlands
Protection Warriors are World of Warcraft’s original tank spec. Along with Protection Paladins, they are one of the two tank specs that use a shield and a one-handed weapon. Protection Warriors are the spec that most fits into the archetypal “tank” role from other RPGs and tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons.
As the original tank, Protection Warriors have a very large, well-established toolkit. They are one of the most versatile tanks, and are a leading class in the following categories:
Damage mitigation
Defensive cooldowns
Dealing damage
Offensive cooldowns
Mobility
Crowd-controlling enemies
Looking very cool -- the most important one!
The chief weakness of Protection Warrior is that it has no self-healing. It also requires a lot of resource and cooldown management. This can be extremely rewarding for an experienced player, but a little bit daunting for a newcomer.

I think it should be noted that monks seem to be suited for more highly skilled players with fast computers. I tried out tanking with a monk and it was difficult for me to keep track of how much stagger I have and when to clear it and which brews to use when. I was used to tanking with Druid and it was very different and my slowish computer made it hard to do the stagger management at the right time. Also monks don't really have a good way to self-heal so they are not so good for soloing powerful enemies like some other tanks are. I think the idea of stagger and managing it is a great idea that many will find engaging but it will take more practice than some other tank options. So if you are in for a challenge that has a great payoff, then go for it!

Guardian Druids are often described as having a simple play style - and that is true if you only look at Bear Form Abilities - depending on your affinity talent you can choose an off spec (Balance, Feral or Resto) which allows you to use spells from a second spec when you aren’t required to be in bear form. Resto affinity in particular allows you to throw out a few decent heals and then switch back to tanking, particularly with the returning talent, Heart of the Wild, which empowers your affinity.
The simplicity of a Guardian Druid’s rotation can also be a boon. It makes it easier newcomers to the tank role to pick it up, and allows experienced players to focus on the environment around you, the tactics of a fight, the mechanics of tanking, and leveraging advanced plays.
Outside of tanking Druid is very versatile with 4 specs to cover every play style in game. They are great at questing and leveling, and no matter what role your team needs, a Druid can always fill it. Even Guardians can stealth, sprint, rezz and combat rezz.
With Shadowlands and enhanced form customisation, there has never been a better time to play a Druid, and if you’ve never tanked before, a Guardian Druid with Resto affinity is great place to get started, with lots of options if it doesn’t work out.
Peace!
