How to Play a Restoration Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
Restoration Druids are the masters of Healing Over Time spells (HoTs) focused around
proactively
applying HoTs to our allies in preparation for incoming damage, then
reactively
responding to that damage with additional healing spells and cooldowns. Utilizing our vast array of HoTs, we can spread their healing across large numbers of spread out allies or concentrate the healing by stacking multiple HoTs on a small number of targets, allowing us to be quite versatile in a variety of content.
Nearly all of our spells cost
Mana
, a large pool of resource that slowly regenerates constantly even while in combat. While our total Mana pool is large compared to the relative costs of our spells, the pool is finite. You'll need to remain mindful of your mana expenditures or you'll find yourself without the resources to heal your allies, especially towards the end of particularly long encounters.
As casters, you'll typically find Restoration Druids at range when on the battlefield. With most abilities being instant cast, Restoration Druids have exceptionally high mobility and excel in situations requiring significant movement. As guardians of nature and protectors of balance, they wield nature's raw energy to restore life to the wounded and shapeshift to other druidic forms to enhance their natural abilities.
If you are a returning player, or feel that you'd benefit from a more in-depth take on the spec, the rest of this guide and
beginner's guide
should prove to be a worthwhile read.
How Different Does Restoration Druid Feel in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Overall the Shadowlands Restoration Druid is nearly identical mechanically to the Battle for Azeroth incarnation. We utilize our HoT oriented playstyle to heal our allies and our various Affinities to deal damage. If you're familiar with the BFA version then it'll be just like riding a bike in Shadowlands, with one notable exception.
Primary mechanical change for Restoration Druids in Shadowlands:
has had its cooldown reduced to 15 sec but now consumes a
,
, or
HoT on the target in order to heal.
Shadowlands introduces a couple of additional changes, but they won't be available until the expansion actually launches. We'll detail all those changes including Covenant abilities in a future guide update prior to the Shadowlands launch.
New Abilities for Restoration Druids in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
In the great unpruning of Shadowlands, Restoration Druids have received a couple of abilities back baseline. None of these are particularly game-breaking, but instead offer a bit more utility to our toolkit. Additionally, a few lesser-used talents have been replaced with some new ones, mostly based on previous PvP talents. While it remains to be seen if any of these find use in our PvE toolkit, it's nice to see some change.
New Baseline Restoration Druid Abilities:
NEW
& NEW
- These abilities no longer require their respective Affinities. It's not a huge change as each Affinity really helps make the most out of these abilities, but a good change.
NEW
- A fantastic hard CC ability that was relegated to a PvP talent in prior expansions is back for Shadowlands. Having this to prevent
ing on a mob will be exceptional in Mythic+. Welcome back old friend.
NEW
- The AoE sprint ability that our Feral and Guardian friends have enjoyed is returning to Restoration Druid. Fantastic utility that I'll be glad to have back in the Restoration Druid arsenal.
New Restoration Druid Talents
NEW
- As a replacement for
, it's okay. It fills the same design space as
. In the pre-patch with increased secondary stats this will likely be a good option for dungeon healing, but will see less use in Shadowlands with the
leveling perk and the reduced amount of secondary stats. Ideally I'd rather this be an augment to
instead of its own spell.
Affinity Changes
- Baking some additional utility into the Affinities is a smart move and makes the choice of which to a pick a bit more meaningful. For
, Restoration Druids have also inherited the
system for dealing damage. Combine that with the energy regeneration reduction for
and the top Affinity for damage for Restoration Druids may be up for grabs
- You now gain
and
.
- You now gain
.
- You now gain
.
NEW
- Essentially a damage cooldown for damage affinity Restoration Druids or a way to become significantly more tanky as a
Restoration Druid. Exceptional utility even with the 5 min cooldown.
NEW
-
failed to see a lot of play as the spell learned from
and this iteration in the talent tree does very little to incentivize its use in Shadowlands. While the other talents in this tier boost AoE burst healing and AoE sustained healing,
is meant to increase Restoration Druid single target burst healing capabilities. While it does do that to some extent, the costs are just too high.
costs more than the
,
, 1/6th of a
and
HoT to apply, so you're really only paying a larger mana cost to apply them all at once. Combine this with a very limiting 1 minute cooldown and the problems with this talent emerge.
How Do AoE Target Caps Affect Restoration Druids in Shadowlands Pre-Patch
While AoE Target Caps have changed for a number of classes, Restoration Druids have seen no changes to the Target Caps of our toolkit. As a result, you can expect exactly
zero
impact on your toolkit from the AoE target caps introduced in Shadowlands! For a full listing of our target caps, please see the Restoration Druid section of the
Shadowlands Target Cap Guide
.
How Do the GCD Changes Affect Restoration Druids in Shadowlands?
has been removed from the GCD and had its duration reduced from 12 sec to 10 sec to compensate.
Returns
to its pre-BFA functionality which is overall just a win. When you need incredibly high throughput yet expensive healing now, you're able to add
to the combo to alleviate the cost without having to add the extra GCD to the setup process. Fantastic change. Now if they can just take
off the GCD as well, so that when we have to shapeshift in the middle of a
, we are not incurring multiple GCDs, that'd be the cherry on top.
How Strong is Restoration Druid in Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
Because our toolkit largely remains unchanged in the Shadowland Pre-Patch, Restoration Druids will remain strong or weak in the same content they felt strong or weak in for BFA. Restoration Druids will remain a formidable healer in Mythic+ largely due to their healing playstyle, decent damage output, and unmatched utility toolkit. In raids, Restoration Druids will likely still be middle of the road; our throughput is more than adequate, but we still lack the raid-wide damage reduction abilities and passive damage utility that is highly valued in Cutting Edge raiding.
What are the Big Gameplay Changes for Restoration Druids?
Restoration Druid remains largely unchanged from a healing gameplay perspective with the exception of
as mentioned above. The only other major gameplay change comes in the form of our new talent
and some potential shakeup in how we deal damage with our various affinities.
has had its cooldown reduced to 15s but now consumes a
,
, or
HoT on the target in order to heal.
Returns
to its more traditional functionality. While it's nice to have greater access to
, the HoT consumption causes you to lose the remaining healing of the consumed HoT and slows down the emergency heal if the target doesn't already have one of the necessary HoTs already applied. Ideally, you'll want to consume a HoT that's about to expire to improve the efficiency of
, but you won't always have the option and will need to consume a nearly full duration HoT. Mixed feelings on this change for sure.
& Dealing Damage
Finally, a talent that treats healer damage as utility and gives Restoration Druids a way to deal more of it if they're willing to commit significant time to dealing damage. It's also possible to become significantly tankier as a
Restoration Druid. Back in Throne of Thunder on Iron Qon, our tank died in the last 30 sec of the fight so our Restoration Druid popped
and tanked the remainder of the fight. It was one of the most epic boss kills and I live for those moments, so I'm all for any talents that have the chance to make that happen.
How we actually deal damage may undergo a bit of change as
received a nerf to its energy regeneration and
now inherits the reworked
system. Which will end up as our primary damage-dealing affinity remains to be seen, but the choice may ultimately come down to the extra added utility or how these affinities interact with our covenant in Shadowlands. Experiment with both in the pre-patch but stay tuned for future updates.
How does the Loss of Corruption Affect Restoration Druids in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch?
As a healer, we mostly stacked secondary stat Corruptions, but you'll only notice a difference if you stacked haste as it greatly affected the number of heals we could output in a given time. Expect things to feel much slower in the pre-patch as a result of losing haste Corruptions. This may result in many Restoration Druids switching back to
over
due to losing some of the efficiency of
with a reduced
count. Due to the diminishing returns on secondary stats, we'll also likely return to a more balanced approach to secondary stats rather than hard stacking a single secondary. See the stats section for more information.
For Restoration Druids that opted for damage Corruptions, you'll likely see a reduced damage contribution, but this should not affect gameplay as they were generally passive procs.
Best Talent Builds for Restoration Druids in Pre-patch
There are very few changes to the talent builds we ran for BFA, with a few notable exceptions for raiding!
This build has three potential choice rows:
Level 15
:
is picked up as the general all-purpose spot heal talent, but consider picking up
if the raid damage is spiky or requires immediate triage.
Level 40
: With the recent changes to
,
has profited a lot from the reduced cooldown and should compete relatively well with
. If you need a cooldown to cover a particularly dangerous moment in the fight, then take
; otherwise, take the more sustained healing approach of
.
Level 45
:
is a great overall talent providing greater access to
which can further be bolstered by
. However, if there is not a good use for
every 2 minutes, then stick with
. It adds solid throughput via its heal over time effect as well as providing a stack of
.
The remainder of the unselected talent rows is mostly utility and situational.
This build focuses on
to provide the necessary tank healing required in dungeons while also making efficient use of the number of spells needed to cast in order to provide additional time to deal damage. Typically,
is taken to provide additional damage via
abilities. This may change to
when Shadowlands launches.
will be the default talent on that row unless you have a specific need for the utility and CC of the other talents.
Best Priority for Restoration Druid in Pre-Patch
Resto Druid ability priority in Shadowlands revolves around proactively applying HoTs just prior to incoming damage and using our remaining spells, cooldowns, and tools to react to that damage.
Note: These are guidelines for a priority under general circumstances. Situations and circumstances can vary. If someone is in danger of dying, then you should take whatever action necessary to prevent it, regardless of how inefficient or where the action falls in this priority.
Keep
and
on the active tank at all times.
can be swapped to non-tank targets that are taking moderate to heavy damage, or to yourself if using
.
Keep
active under injured targets. Usually keeping it in melee is a safe bet. However, if the ranged are taking significant raid damage and are mostly stacked you can use it there as well.
on cooldown when incoming AoE damage occurs.
Use
on priority or highly injured targets on cooldown. These players will require a
,
,
HoT on them that will be consumed. Apply the HoT before if necessary, but try to prefer consuming an expiring HoT if possible to improve efficiency.
Consume
buffs with
on heavily injured targets.
heavily injured players if necessary.
Use
as a filler raid healing ability by spreading
to players that are (or are about to) taking damage.
Use
when the entire group or raid is heavily injured, being mindful of other healers' raid cooldowns.
Use
,
, and
as damaging filler abilities during periods of little to zero incoming damage.

Rotation guide

Best Stats for Restoration Druids in Pre-Patch
Raiding
With the removal of Corruption in the pre-patch and a
diminishing return on secondary stats
in Shadowlands, we're returning to a more balanced secondary stat setup for raiding Restoration Druids that prioritizes gearing for item level. Generally, our secondary stat weights are relatively close together where the most valuable will change based on the damage profile of the encounter. As such, the best option tends to be prioritizing higher item level pieces causing the increased intellect to counteract any variance of the secondary stats. Ideally, you'll want to avoid reaching any of the new diminishing return softcaps on secondaries by enchanting and gemming lower secondary stat ratings.
When assessing ilvl, it's best to remember that sockets are worth roughly 10-15 ilvls on most items and even slightly more on rings. The leech tertiary stat can also be a powerful self-healing mechanic that is worth dropping 5-10 ilvls for in most cases.
Mythic+
For Mythic+, you'll still want to gear for item-level but prioritize more Haste and Mastery when possible. Mastery is by far the strongest healing stat in dungeons, but it's worth noting that Mastery does not provide additional damage. If your goal is to provide as much damage as possible in Mythic+ then consider prioritizing other stats.

Haste
Additional info can always be found in
the stats guide

Best Azerite Traits for Restoration Druids in Pre-Patch
Our Azerite selection process remains relatively unchanged with one exception;
received a slight buff with the new 15 sec cooldown of
.
As of the Sept 29th PTR Build
no longer requires 25 effective Corruption to activate.

This is a great guide; thanks. Wish there was more information, and as detailed, for PvP.

Swipe is target capped, which is extremely relevant for dungeon content yet the article says we have no target caps. Untrue.
