Welcome to Wowhead's Holy Paladin Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Holy Paladins in PvP, such as a healing rotation, and some common mistakes that Holy Paladins make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much healing as you can (when it is possible to do so).

- Instant cast heal that you take damage equal to 50% of the healing done. If it heals for 1000, you spend 500 of your own HP. Useful in emergency situations when you cannot spend time to cast a heal or have no other instant healing available.
黎明之光
- Your AoE heal, costs 3 Holy Power. With the 9.2 changes to tier sets, this ability in conjunction with Necrolords

will be a major heal for Holy Paladins. It's unlikely it will be used on it's own, as Word of Glory will activate it, but there are opportunities where it will be used solo for maximum efficiency.

- Big dam judge! A hard hitting ability that empowers your next

on the target. This is your main offensive burst in kill windows, usually followed up by a

- Low damage ability with high mana cost, but generates 1 Holy Power. Used sparingly, not like in the past where we could spam it.

- High damage ability with limited activation. Always use this ability on cooldown to generate free Holy Power as well as to assist in burst damage. When you have

- The damage is low but this AoE ability is still useful for knocking enemy players out of stealth such as Rogues, Druids, and Mages.

- Low damage melee range AoE ability, can be used for extra burst if you have a surplus of Holy Power as it has its own global cooldown.
Utility

- Your main crowd control ability, a powerful 6 second stun with a short range. Very versatile in use, you can get creative with every situation on how to use it. Can stun the healer for setups, or stun the kill target to lock them down.

- Talented incapacitate crowd control option, usually taken when your team does not bring the Incapacitate crowd control school such as with a Warrior. Usually best to cast off of other crowd control, so it's harder for the enemy team to stop you. Have to be very careful when using this ability because if you get interrupted on it, you cannot cast heals as it is on the Holy school of spells.

- Talented disorient crowd control option, needed when your team needs an extra fear crowd control effect. Used while playing RMPal for example to facilitate 3v1 scenarios in arena.

- Your main mobility as a Paladin, global cooldown locked. Usually paired with

so you cannot be slowed while in your mounted form. Can be used both offensively and defensively.

- This Holy Paladin aura sees much play time in PvP. Reduces interrupt and silence effects on your whole team, as well as fear effects with a finesse conduit.

- Can be used to fear Death Knight pets/cooldowns such as

Cooldowns

- Your largest throughput cooldown, used pretty early to get your offense going, or used defensively to stop the enemies offensive push. Recognizing what the scary offensive cooldowns from the enemy team are and trading accordingly are at the crux of playing Holy Paladin at a high level. For example, the enemy Mage pops

, or the enemy Warlock uses

, you should look to trade some sort of defensive cooldown.

- Your strongest personal defensive cooldown. Full immunity for 8 seconds. This is your get out of jail free card, you have to save this button for crucial moments in the game. Can be dispelled by Warriors with

Healing Rotation
The goal of the Holy Paladin healing rotation is to generate as much Holy Power as possible, while weaving in long cast

s for healing efficiency.
Apply

to your chosen targets you are going to heal, then

will be able to generate 1 Holy Power per cast.
Use

on cooldown, and once 3 or more Holy Power is generated, use

for on demand healing output. When using the tier set with Necrolord, this spell will activate

free of charge twice, which will fully top your teammates if in range.
It is extremely important that

is used whenever possible, it provides 1 free Holy Power for no mana cost. When

procs, you are able to get two of these off, so make sure to put the ability to good use.

is more powerful healing in the Shadowlands - before you would never use
殉道者之光
except in emergency situations, but now
殉道者之光
is a mainstay of the Paladin rotation in PvP.
Important
- If you have the debuff

on yourself, you can use
殉道者之光
on a friendly player to heal yourself instead of damaging yourself, until the effects of
控心术
have been consumed, or expired.
Use

to generate Holy Power, unless you feel you can get away with casting a 2.5 second

is mostly for the increased healing, not Holy Power generation. Spending

is the most desirable, but if you cannot get the long cast

Effective Strategies for Holy Paladins in PvP
Arena focused for the most part, but some things apply in all PvP situations.
MY MOST IMPORTANT TIP FOR ANYBODY LOOKING TO PVP, ESPECIALLY ARENAS: READ THE SPELLBOOK OF ALL THE CLASSES AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY DO.
Early Game
Before the gates open, apply
圣光道标
/
信仰道标
on the friendly targets you believe will be the main kill targets from the enemy team. After the gates open jump forward while mounted and using the momentum of your mount speed cast

and

to generate early Holy Power. This is when you look to pre-emptively

your Warrior for example from getting slowed down on their mount. Depending on what's going on in the opener you can either choose to generate more Holy Power with

, or to mount back up.
Next you look to get into a favorable position, generally near a pillar or near line of sight. Another aggressive positioning option is next to the enemy healer if your composition is looking to start the fight right away, so takes the pillar nearest the enemy healer. This gets you ready to use

and run over to
制裁之锤
the healer.
Mid Game
The core of any combat situation with Holy Paladins involves trading offensive and defensive cooldowns at the right times, as well as swapping between offensive and defensive modes of combat. Let's say you're fighting against Rogue/Mage/Priest for example. What you're looking to do as the Paladin is to trade healing/defensive cooldowns on the enemy Rogue/Mage offensive cooldowns, while also pursuing an effective offensive strategy to win the game which usually involves using

on the healer while avoiding the Priest

. Let's say you're playing offensively going for

on the healer, but you force a major defensive cooldown such as

out of the Mage. That is your cue to run away from the fight as your kill opportunity is usually lost unless your team has a way to break the Mage out of the

. Another situation could be you just used
保护祝福
on a Rogue's
肾击
to shutdown their offensive push, that is when you turn into attack mode and use
神圣马驹
for example to look for crowd control on the enemy healer, or contribute some damage with
审判
.
End Game
How does the game end? Well, once one side dies it's game over. Seems simple, but how do you know when a game is going to end? As a Holy Paladin healer you can usually tell if a game is going to end in a loss is if you are out of mana, or you are out of defensive cooldowns. Generally it is better to end a game having spent all of your cooldowns and mana than to lose with all of it up. That being said, greed is good. Greed with cooldowns comes when you start to recognize the amount of damage possible from the enemy team at every second of the game. This comes from experience and replaying matchups over and over again.
How can you tell if you're going to win a game or PvP situation? The enemy runs out of defensive cooldowns, you or your team is not in crowd control, and usually but not always the healer (if there is one) is in some type of crowd control effect.
Common Mistakes Holy Paladins Make
1. Using

on a healer when your team cannot follow up on crowd control, or cannot be attacked, such as behind line of sight.
2. Playing offensively for too long - you need to know when to swap to defensive mode.
3. When you get trained, don't panic! You can get away at 1% HP from the enemy and still be okay.
4. Have fun, we play this game for fun =). Sometimes it's easy to lose sight of what's important while playing competitive formats of WoW, but a good attitude goes a long way in this game. Trust me.
