Welcome to Wowhead's Frost Mage Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Frost Mages in PvP, including crowd control, how to play defensively, and some common mistakes that Frost Mages make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Frost Mages in PvP. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Important Cooldowns for Frost Mages in PvP
Frost Mage's consistent damage is not tied to cooldowns, however the rest of their toolkit (including burst) is heavily tied to their cooldowns and how they use them.
Offensive Cooldowns

- The main offensive burst cooldown for Frost Mages. This spell is off the global cooldown and will trigger a

(when selected). No matter when you press this ability the enemy will be forced to respect it - try and make sure the enemy team has committed to their "go" so they will get punished when trying to stay aggressive during this cooldown.

- A secondary offensive burst cooldown for Mages, you usually want to pair with either
寒冰新星
or
冰冻术
. It is important in PvP to always make sure you shatter Comet Storm using one of these tools.
寒冰新星
- As mentioned previously it is typical to combine this ability with Comet Storm to follow-up Shatter the ability, however it can also be used separately as a tool to stop an enemy in their tracks, or even to Shatter a different Frost attack.
寒冰宝珠
- A decent cooldown which will allow you to generate instant damage in the form of Fingers of Frost. Be careful when using this as it can break CC if misplaced. The talent
凝结寒气
is taken to make this easier.
Defensive Cooldowns
寒冰屏障
- The iconic Mage immunity that allows your team to reset and regain its foothold in the arena, or used liberally to remove debuffs from yourself or escape crowd control. For a Frost Mage, this is your ability to fully negate damage and as such needs to be treated carefully. You do, however, have two charges of them due to
急速冷却
. Once you commit both you are going to be very vulnerable, so be careful using this aggressively. Ideally it will be your last line of defense after committing other defensive cooldowns.

- Unique to Frost Mages this ability will reset the cooldown on Ice Block and other Frost spells, allowing for some interesting gameplay. 99% of the time however, you will simply be using this after you use your first Ice Block to get it on cooldown and recharging.

- This will give you a decent 20% damage reduction cooldown for a brief amount of time (as the images can only be destroyed every few seconds) and as such will be a good idea to use when you need some damage reduction but not something vital. If you are aware of incoming damage and will not need to be using anything more dire, this is a great time to use the ability. Be careful when using this around Windwalker Monks as they will gain huge Spinning Crane Kick damage stacks.
Utility Cooldowns

- Making a return in Shadowlands is the iconic Alter Time, albeit the version from Warlords of Draenor. You activate it once, and upon reactivation or expiry of the buff it will return you to the location and health value you were previously at. This ability has extensive uses but essentially you need to be extremely proactive. There are two main use cases, either character displacement or health restoration. In either case you want to use the ability early with the plan to reactivate to the location you were at, or the health value. Proper use of this ability can make or break your gameplay. It is important to note if it gets purged it will do nothing, and if you /cancelaura the buff it will also do nothing and act as if it was purged.
Alter Time can also be considered a defensive ability, as it is useful not only for gaining health but also to reset into a more aggressive or defensive position.
Effective Strategies for Frost Mages in PvP
Setting Up
Before the gates open, ensure you

for your party and buff them with

Start most games with

to get Crowd Control on the enemy before beginning your initial burst. If you are facing another Mage however, wait until they use their Invisibility before using yours (which may take a while). The second Mage to use Invisibility will have the advantage because not only will they will be able to come out later, they will be able to stop any initial crowd control attempts.
When ready, begin by applying Crowd Control to two or three targets. Your teammates can assist with crowd control depending on the composition. For example, a Shadow Priest's

, a Monk's

or a Rogue's

can provide more crowd control, ensuring you can make the most out of your burst sequence. With as many targets crowd controlled as possible, start with heavy burst. In a situation where you aren't able to start a go and burst right away, simply start casting Frostbolts on the most available target to start building Icicles and procs.
Burst
At any time during the match, the optimal time to burst down a target is after your team has set up cross-crowd control. When playing a control comp like melee/caster/healer, if you want to go 'all-in' you can start by casting
冰冷血脉
(although this isn't essential) then place a
寒冰宝珠
onto the kill target. Follow this with
彗星风暴
(but only if the target is stunned or stationary) then use
寒冰新星
followed by
冰枪术
until you run out of
寒冰指
.
With the addition of
深度碎裂
, Frost Mages can also burst with
寒冰箭
/
冰冻术
(Pet Nova) shatter combos (although it is also possible to shatter with
冰霜新星
,
寒冰新星
, and
冰风暴
). This allows the Mage more constant burst pressure in between 'goes' with
寒冰宝珠
,
彗星风暴
, and Ice Nova.
Please note that many abilities in this damage rotation are Area of Effect abilities, meaning you are at risk of breaking any active crowd control when using them. Crowd control should always be the priority so if you are at risk of breaking crowd control on enemy players, it is usually better to use single target spells such as
黑冰箭
,
寒冰箭
, and
冰枪术
.
When playing a caster composition, the rules of bursting are much more relaxed. You generally want to farm Frostbolts until you generate a Flurry proc and then Ice Form to generate a Rune of Power and Shatter your Frostbolt with your Flurries whenever you are able to.
Crowd Control
Setting up crowd control is one of your primary goals as a Frost Mage in PvP and your partners should help you accomplish it. For example, if you are playing with a Rogue, they can stun the healer and stun the DPS off you. This will allow you to land a
变形术
on the healer without a chance of being interrupted or of the healer line of sighting the spell. This will also bait out more defensive cooldowns from the enemies.
That is how stuns will usually operate regarding crowd control, but often the most effective Polymorphs you will land are very flexible. It is up to the Mage to learn to take advantage of enemy positioning, aggressive and defensive play, Shimmers, and their teams positioning to consistently land Polymorphs. Frost Mages lack a consistent way to setup Polymorphs for themselves so they have to get creative.
Defensive
Defensive play as a Frost Mage in PvP primarily revolves around kiting and positioning yourself well with Shimmer but also includes using
寒冰护体
,
寒冰屏障
, and
急速冷却
, and utilising your slows and roots such as
冰锥术
,
冰霜新星
, and
暴风雪
.

is also a large part of defensive play for a Frost Mage. When the enemy is attempting to set up their kill onto your team, you can counter them by using Polymorph. This is one of the most valuable defensive skills a Mage possesses.
It is important for you to keep track of whether your healer is in or out of Crowd Control. If your healer gets full
变形术
ed,
旋风
d, trapped, etc. this is your time to LoS (Line of Sight), kite, or create distance from the enemy through Blink or
闪光术
. The mark of a good Mage is utilizing their awareness to make themselves a very difficult target to attack when their healer is in Crowd Control, or about to be.
Sustain/Downtime
Downtime as a Frost Mage consists of two main parts: building damage and making sure you are controlling/positioning in a defensive manner. Downtime will take place when you have already Polymorphed the healer, the healer is healing the DPS back to full health, and you know that you won’t be able to get a kill until you can apply more crowd control and burst again.
During this downtime, you can use
寒冰箭
to generate Flurry and Fingers of Frost procs and either hold them for your next chain, or fire them out and ramp up pressure ASAP.
Common Mistakes Frost Mages Make
Do not cast
寒冰箭
when you are trying to burst down a target. This is the most common Frost Mage error in PvP. Frostbolt essentially builds damage by priming the target and getting them slightly lower on health, as well as building icicles to prepare for the burst sequence outlined earlier. Let me repeat: Do not cast Frostbolt when you are trying to burst down an enemy target. That is not what the spell is for.
The exception to this rule is when you are playing the Frostbolt oriented burst play style, meaning all subsequent talents, Necrolord Covenant, etc. If you are Necrolord and playing this build, it is acceptable to cast Frostbolt during an offensive go with
死神之躯
activated.
Always chain your Polymorphs. A huge mistake I see is when a Frost Mage will get a full
变形术
onto a healer, let it break, then the healer heals up the kill target and five seconds later (while the kill target is at full health) the healer goes into a half Polymorph. The issue with this is that the diminishing returns (DR) of your Polymorph has been wasted and you won't be able to reset for another 18 seconds. Similarly, if you leave any kind of gap in between your Polymorphs, classes such as Paladins and Monks will take advantage of that gap to get major healing cooldowns off, stopping all pressure you may have. It is much more important to chain the Polymorphs than leave gaps even if it means overlapping a bit of duration. To track your diminishing returns so that you know when your Polymorph will be full again, I recommend downloading a DR tracker or the Gladius addon.
Countering Other Classes
A Holy Paladin's

can be spellstolen, even though the icon for Divine Favor does not light up (normally spellstealable icons glow). Once you

their Divine Favor, Paladins are susceptible to being interrupted. Holy Paladins also have
牺牲祝福
which transfers the damage the enemy takes onto the Paladin. Holy Paladins will attempt to apply Blessing of Sacrifice to their partner before they get Polymorphed to break the effect. Fake casting the Polymorph to bait out a Blessing of Sacrifice can be highly beneficial.
Priests will normally try to counter a Frost Mage's Polymorphs by using
暗言术:灭
to break out of them. Fake cast the
变形术
or kick them on Shadow to prevent this.
Abilities that reflect spells (such as a Warlock's
虚空守卫
) are something to watch out for when trying to burst a target down, or when attempting to Polymorph them. Depending on the awareness of your target you might want to treat them like a Priest, treat Spell Reflection as Shadow Word: Death and don't sheep them unless it is on cooldown.
A Death Knight's
黑暗模拟
ability is dangerous for a Mage because it is able to steal your Polymorphs. Polymorph is the primary ability that the enemy Death Knight will aim to steal. If you know they have Dark Simulacrum off cooldown, it is a good idea to start casting

to bait the Dark Simulacrum, use
冰枪术
(to give them an Ice Lance instead), then continue to Polymorph.
Other Mages will try to set up the same way as you during their kill windows. This means they are going to attempt to crowd control your healer then burst you down. To counter this, save your trinket to

the enemy Mage when they are going for a setup (assuming you are stunned or crowd controlled during this setup). Your trinket as a Mage is extremely valuable in Mage vs. Mage match-ups to stop 'goes' with a Trinket->

on the enemy Mage.
A Demon Hunter's
恶魔追击
ability will stop casting if you root them mid-cast. This can often save you from using a cooldown and takes a second away from them dealing damage to you.
