What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Buying Corruptions with Echoes of Ny'alotha for Frost Mages
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on a Frost Mage?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on a Frost Mage.
Corruptions should only be purchased at maximum rank, unless you are struggling to meet a DPS check and a lower rank is available.
Even then, we don't advise ever buying a Rank 1 of any Corruption with three ranks.

Best Frost Mage Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

Generally Frost Mages will prioritize increased mastery (
), especially for
No Ice Lance
builds, although increased haste (
) and critical strike damage (
) can be useful as well.
Orb Build Frost
gains most of its power from
and the
Essence; Corruption does not - at the time of writing - appear to add much power to this way of playing Frost. Despite that, it also favours
and
.
Great Effects
- Passive Mastery increase, extremely powerful for standard and No Ice Lance Frost builds. A very efficient source of damage-per-Corruption.
- Powerful stacking damage buff for all builds, and by far the best Corruption bonus we can get for pure damage over long, single-target encounters. However, avoid using this effect in any fight with multiple targets.
- A passive DoT applied by all abilities; hits hard and costs little Corruption.
Good Effects
- One of our best stat procs.
- Strong damage and a snare against a single target.
- Another powerful stat proc, best for No Ice Lance.
- Great proc for Orb Build.
Bad Effects
- Not very useful, as few Frost abilities have cooldowns in general.
- Lackluster for standard and No Ice Lance Frost. Slightly better for Orb Build, but still not one of our best affixes.
- Our worst passive stat effect.
Data from Bloodmallet. Click here to learn more about it.
Good Effects
- Already strong against single targets, this gains even more power in AoE and cleave.
Good Effects
- A strong effect for all Frost builds in AoE, as the effect increases the cooldown recovery rate of
from
.
- Strong stat proc.
- Strong stat proc.
- Strong stat proc for No Ice Lance builds.
Bad Effects
- Some use if it hits
, which also enables more casts of
, but generally weak.
- Our worst passive stat effect.
Best Frost Mage Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar affix, you can always cleanse it. As a Frost Mage, you can obtain the following weapons:
always comes with
- Gains a lot of power in multi-target situations, due to affecting
and
cooldowns.
always comes with
- A strong effect for Frost Mages, considering the number of spells we use, and much stronger in single target than other options.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- While we can only cleanse the debuff with
(a waste of the ability),
and
easily counter the snare.
- Blink and Shimmer will work to escape the void zones, so this effect is almost negligible for Mages unless playing with
(you should be standing at the edge of your Rune anyway, so if this procs you can simply move to the other side of the void zone). The only thing to keep in mind is when a raid fight forces strict positioning requirements, in which case you should move as little as possible to escape the zone, and then stop. In extreme situations, use the on-use effect of
, gained at rank 6, to dispel all corruption effects.
- A single
is enough to root the Thing from Beyond for its entire duration, as long as you avoid hitting it after casting Nova. You can also root the mob using
, or kite it with
.
- If you do let your Corruption get this high (tip: don't), use all of the above methods to get out of the effect.
and/or
the Thing From Beyond, then
away. This is a very dangerous effect (the creature will deal around a third of your maximum health in damage, you will place a massive void zone and have a 70% snare on you), and you should never go above 60 corruption if you can help it.
- There is no counter to this effect, it is always active above 80 corruption and cannot be removed.
How Much Corruption Should a Frost Mage Take?
You should ideally stay below 40 Corruption in both raids and M+, as the Thing From Beyond summoned by
can be very disruptive. Strict positioning requirements in raids, and limited space to kite in M+, both effect our ability to deal with the mob if
breaks. However, because we can handle the Thing From Beyond with relative ease using
, temporarily going above 40 Corruption is not the worst thing in the world - although isn't recommended on progress fights.
Whether or not to go up to or above 60 Corruption will depend on what Corruption affixes you have, how much room to kite the encounter/dungeon gives you and how much of a DPS race it is. For example, using a high-tier
will likely be worth the trade-off in Corruption if you need more damage, but
or
would not be.
Early in patch 8.3, before getting any items that help to counter Corruption, you should judge which affixes to use by how much DPS you gain per point of Corruption.
