Welcome to Wowhead's Frost Death Knight Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Frost Death Knights in PvP including peeling, surviving, and how to play offensively, as well as some common mistakes that Frost Death Knights make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Frost Death Knights in PvP, such as a basic damage rotation and burst damage rotation. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

General Damage Dealing
Frost

uses Runes for basic abilities and can generate Runic Power. As a result, they tend to work off a priority system and try to balance these two core resources and adjust their rotation accordingly with procs like

General Priorities
Use

procs as fast as possible on

procs as fast as possible on

We use

second, because it can proc a

proc and therefore could waste damage.
Use

if you are playing with the

talent and (generally) before using other runes. There is an exception to this, and it's for your initial

(see Basic Opening Rotation).
Use

if three Runes are not on cooldown.
If your targets are at range, use

. You usually won't need to worry about keeping up
冰霜疫病
, because as a Frost

in Arena, you are often being kited which forces you to use these two abilities.
Basic Opening Rotation/Burst
Apply
寒冰锁链
to keep your target slowed.
Apply
冰霜疫病
with
凛风冲击
.
凛风冲击
will hit multiple targets within 10 yards, also applying
冰霜疫病
to them.
Use
死亡之握
to pull in the enemy healer or another DPS to the DPS you are next to. Follow this immediately with
致盲冰雨
to keep them both in place.
Use
冷酷严冬
. You need to get this global out before you start bursting, because you will not have time for it during your burst rotation.
Use
冰霜巨龙之怒
to stun both the targets that you've pulled together. This is a stun because of the required Legendary Power

Effective Strategies for Frost Death Knights in PvP
Playing Offensively
One of Frost DK's biggest benefits is that it can stay aggressive from its abilities that prevent incoming CC or slows.

are all abilities that prevent incoming CC or slow effects and can be used during burst windows to stay offensive and land a kill. This obviously comes at a cost, however, as these are also your defensive abilities and without them you will be more susceptible to being swapped to. This allows you to make the call, if you have other cooldowns available and feel like you can land a kill, to use one of the aforementioned defensive cooldowns aggressively and finish the game.
Another critical part of playing offensively as Frost is to manage your enemies' positioning well. Using

well is extremely important, as Frost DK's biggest strength is its cleave. Not only do most of your abilities just naturally need all targets nearby to increase the output and thus the pressure on the enemy team,
寒冰联结
requires a second target to be within range for a good amount of time for every bounce to go off. While most players believe that this ability gets countered by enemy compositions that have pets, it generally does not. If the enemy team won't be stacked very often, or its hard to keep them in the correct range even after a grip, then using the pets to get every bounce of
寒冰联结
to go off increases the damage enormously. For example, if you were only to get 3 or 4 hits originally, and the pet allows the full 9, that still adds an extra 3 hits to the enemy player you're trying to kill. Making sure you're always getting your maximum cleave output through your own positioning and your manipulation of the enemies positioning is very important.
Surviving
Surviving as Frost is all about self healing and CC prevention.
灵界打击
can heal for a great amount during enemy burst windows as the healing is increased based on how much damage you've taken. Therefore, if you pool up Runic Power any time you're a potential target and Death Strike when you're at low health and have taken a lot of damage recently, you will spike back up and completely heal through the enemy team's burst. This, coupled with the Crowd Control prevention Death Knights gain from their defensive cooldowns can provide great survivability. Here's some important things to pay attention to:
If you're a potential target, make sure to always keep your Runic Power high, and hold off a bit on the
冰霜打击
usage, to allow yourself to use
灵界打击
on demand to heal.
Against double casters, always save
反魔法护罩
for defensive utility rather than offensive, unless you can truly guarantee a kill by preventing CC.
巫妖之躯
will turn you undead, allowing you to use the spell
凋零缠绕
to heal yourself even when you have no target. This is great when you need to stay behind a pillar away from the enemy team during their offensive cooldowns.
冰封之韧
can be used well as a panic defensive coupled with
灵界打击
large healing output, because it allows you to get out of your stun to self heal. Most walls should be used prior to the enemy team's setups, but
冰封之韧
can be used more reactively.
反魔法领域
is a solid defensive against double caster, and should be used to recover from rot teams, or over an enemy team's stun setup, to completely wall their offensive cooldowns. This an ability that should always be communicated well to get the best use out of it.
Check out the Talents & Racials section of this guide for certain PVP talents that can be taken to increase survivability in different ways.
Regardless of how they are used, defensives should always be communicated constantly with your healer. Communicating what you have available helps prevent overlaps and lets the healer know when they need to trinket or pop a cooldown of their own.
Peeling
The utility of
寒冰锁链
and
死亡之握
should not be undervalued.
寒冰锁链
is one of the more disruptive and impactful peeling abilities in the game, as it is a 70% undispellable slow, with a 30 yard range and a small resource requirement. This can be used against any class very effectively, to allow a teammate to recover when they're getting close to death. Keeping Chains of Ice on every important enemy player is a staple of Death Knight gameplay currently.

is a very powerful peel after
暗影步
from an Assassination Rogue, or after
英勇飞跃
from a
战士
. It can also be used to peel as your teammate moves around a pillar to prevent the use of gap closers like
暗影步
or
冲锋
.
窒息
or
致盲冰雨
can also be used to peel if you're in a bad situation. Generally these abilities are used to setup kills, but they can disrupt enemy setups and win conditions by CC enemies during their cooldowns. Stunning a Rogue with no trinket after they have used
肾击
on a target is one of the many, many examples of this use case.
Common Mistakes Frost Death Knights Make
One common mistake is to only use
寒冰锁链
on a target that has gotten out of range.
寒冰锁链
should actually be kept with permanent uptime on multiple enemy players depending on the situation. Against double melee, both melee should always be slowed to peel for whoever is taking damage and so they can't effectively swap. Against caster melee, you can slow the melee off you while slowing the caster to prevent kiting. Furthermore, you should even use
寒冰锁链
on the enemy healer to prevent them from getting CC or easily getting line of sight of your CC.
Another mistake is not abusing the overwhelming power of
灵界打击
. It heals for an enormous amount, and is even a panic defensive in certain situations. Because
灵界打击
heals off the damage taken within a period, if you get hit from enemy burst in a short span of over 80% of your health, as long as you're right on the target, you actually don't have to use a defensive generally.
灵界打击
in the situation of high burst windows will slingshot you back to high health, allowing you to use your runic power as cooldown-free defensives. Sometimes it is easy to panic and start throwing out your defensives, but recognizing when
灵界打击
is going to heal for an absurd amount is an extremely powerful tool.
Finally, making sure to use
反魔法护罩
correctly is extremely important. Against certain comps that can exploit Death Knight by kiting and killing it when
反魔法护罩
is on cooldown, you should not throw it away to avoid CC or they will swap to you and have a good kill target. However, against comps that rely on burst windows and won't be able to handle the healing of
灵界打击
negating most of their pressure,
反魔法护罩
can be used to stay aggressive to make sure to land a kill. If they're certainly going your partner the whole game, having your
反魔法护罩
at the end of the game with him dead doesn't help you in any way. Therefore, you can use it to prevent CC to better peel for them or get pressure to help disrupt their burst windows.
