What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on a Frost Death Knight?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on a Frost Death Knight.

Best Frost Death Knight Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.
S-tier
It's advantageous to run quite a bit of crit with
on single target and
therefore ends up in S-tier. It's important to note that the value of this corruption depends on the amount of crit you have on your gear! The more crit you have, the more powerful this corruption becomes.
is a solid mastery proc that works really well with our kit.
scales really well off with our mastery-scaling kit.
A-tier
Even though
sims very high (485 ilvl pieces) it doesn't end up in S-tier since it quickly loses value on multiple targets. On pure single target, this corruption gains a huge amount of value from the stacking damage increase on your target. When additional adds are added to a fight, this damage increase will be spread out, thus decreasing on average.
is just a solid single target trait.
B-tier
Multiple corruptions that synergise with our stat values end up in B-tier. They scale nicely to AoE but sadly don't pack the punch on SIngle Target.
is down in B-tier. Note: with additional targets, it splits the damage with the
overall
increasing by 15% per target up to 75% on 6 targets. The trait scales slightly in AoE and outputs a good chunk of single target damage!
(with allies)
All other traits don't bring as much value as the ones above. However, if you got a corrupted item that doesn't take you above 40 corruption, always equip it since it'll be a dps upgrade without a significant downside.
The traits that increase the stat you gain such as
heavily scale with your current stat value. This means that the more Crit you have, the more potent the trait will be. This is important to remember so that you aren't confused when sims tell you another trait is better!
S-tier
The best corruptions for Breath in AoE are those that interact with our secondaries. This includes both mastery and crit increasing corruptions as well as the mastery proc one.
A-tier
We mostly have some corruptions that interact with our secondaries here!
B-tier
These corruptions are good when it comes to dps value for corruption cost.
isn't simulated with the added bonus from nearby allies having the corruption equipped. It can therefore be slightly stronger in situations like that.
(with allies)

S-tier
scales really well with both crit and haste and we therefore have corruption that increases these stats in the S-tier.
A-tier
is great on pure Single Target but quickly loses value as you add more targets. A large portion of its damage comes from the stacking debuff it puts on its target. With multiple target, this debuff gets spread out and the average enemy will have a smaller buff. You also need the corruption on an item with high ilvl for it to be worth!
B-tier
These choices are all solid when it comes to dps value for corruption cost. They all also scale into AoE which is a nice bonus.
has dropped down to B-tier. It splits its damage in AoE with the overall output increasing by 15% per target up to 75% at 6 targets. It's a solid dps choice but nowhere near as overpowered as previously.

S-tier
scales heavily off crit and haste in AoE due to the synergy between
and the CDR reduction of
. Increasing our crit and haste values is therefore the best we can do in AoE!
A-tier
Another couple of traits that increase our secondaries, something that scales nicely in AoE. Since we deal loads of crit damage in AoE, the crit damage increase is also really valuable.
simply has a really high AoE output!
B-tier
scales slightly in AoE even though it splits the damage, dealing 15% increased damage per target up to 75% at 6 targets.

Best Frost Death Knight Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As a Frost Death Knight, you can obtain weapons with the following effects:
- always comes with
, a mediocre effect which explodes roughly twice per minute. The gain is rather small for the corruption cost, making it likely you'll just cleanse the weapon.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- Death Knights will make good use of
/
to deal with this ability. We will still suffer heavily from it since our mobility is low in general.
- Death Knights can again use
/
to quickly exit the zone. Furthemore,
can be utilised to negate the damage. Most importantly, position matters heavily here. Do not stand in such a way that an eye will restrict your access to the boss. Think smart and stand in such a way that you always can move to a new spot when it triggers!
- Since the Thing from Beyond only lasts for 8 seconds,
can be of great use to control the monster for the majority of its duration. You can also spec into
, removing the requirement of targeting the Thing before you CC it.
- If you do get hit, make sure to have
/
available to quickly get out!
How Much Corruption Should a Frost Death Knight Take?
I recommend staying under 40 corruption at all times. Neither
or
require you to switch off the boss to deal with the mechanics, and you don't want to have to save
for the Thing from Beyond in Mythic+ dungeons.
