Welcome to Wowhead's Fire Mage Arena PvP Guide, up to date for 9.2! In this section of the guide, we cover effective strategies for Fire Mages in PvP, including defensive strategies, crowd control usage in PvP, and some common mistakes that Fire Mages make (so that you can avoid making them yourself). Strategy is crucial for winning arenas, so knowing how to use your utility will prove useful. We also cover ideal rotations for Fire Mages in PvP, such as a burst damage rotation and a sustain rotation. Although PvP isn't necessarily rotation-based, it is useful to know how to output as much damage as you can (when it is possible to do so).

Important Cooldowns for Fire Mages in PvP
Offensive
燃烧
is the iconic offensive cooldown that Fire Mage possesses. While the basics of how to burst correctly with it is covered on this page, I want to preface that with some small details on how to prepare for your
燃烧
before it comes off cooldown. The key to maximizing your damage in
燃烧
is making sure you have three
火焰冲击
charges going into it;
火焰冲击
has a base 10 second cooldown that is reduced by Haste, so if you're at zero charges and
燃烧
comes up in 30 seconds, you need to start pooling
火焰冲击
s. Not only is
火焰冲击
a significant portion of our damage, but it enables quicker
炽热连击
and gives us a massive damage modifier when combined with the Potency Conduit

is a PvP talent introduced in 9.1 and is a potent addition to our offensive toolkit. The cooldown is relatively short but will require you to aim the ability (similarly to
冰霜之环
) so look to line this ability up with any kind of lockdown that will keep your target stationary. Keep in mind that
冰霜之环
can break CC and enemy players will look to use this against you by purposefully standing in it to prevent
变形术
.
Defensive
镜像
is a returning as a baseline spell in Shadowlands. While
镜像
does deal damage, it is a negligible amount and we strictly use it for defensive purposes as it gives us an impressive 20% damage reduction on a 2 minute cooldown. Usage for this spell is straightforward; use it when you feel like you are about to take massive damage and preferably save it for when you find your partners are in crowd control. One important thing to note is that while
镜像
lasts 40 seconds, taking direct damage will destroy one of your images, meaning that this spell will only give you damage reduction until you have taken three direct hits.

is yet another returning spell in Shadowlands.

is an incredibly high skill cap ability as its effectiveness is only as good as your ability to predict incoming damage. Ideally, we use this spell in situations where we are already at high health, damage intake is about to be high, and our teammate is locked down in crowd control. This ability is able to be dispelled so you will need to be mindful of the classes you are up against and attempt to
闪光术
out of range or out of line of sight when activating.
Utility
While the spells I'm about to list can be classified as a variety of things, I'm going to cover an important concept that is not often talked about which is saving and combining your utility skills in order to land clean crowd control setups. It can be incredibly tempting to just toss out
龙息术
,
冰霜新星
, or
闪光术
when you're under pressure or to
法术反制
the first cast you see, but it is often better to hold these cooldowns. When you combine these tools, you enable yourself to get crowd control at consistent intervals on your own while leaving little room for counterplay.
To exemplify this point, imagine you're faced up against a Melee/Caster/Healer composition and the enemy healer is off diminishing returns for crowd control while you managed to save all of your utility skills. In this scenario, an incredibly effective play is to

the enemy caster on their crowd control school,

the melee,

towards the healer and
龙息术
>

them.

will put you out of range of most melee counterplay abilities, the enemy caster will be

ed out of responding, and the healer will be in an instant crowd control. These situations may not always play out this perfectly but it is a realistic example of how you can solo carry your team to a setup when you combine your skills effectively.
Effective Strategies for Fire Mages in PvP
First and foremost, the biggest thing you can do as a Mage is keep
奥术智慧
up at
all
times. It increases your damage output, your team's healing output, and if you have a third caster, their damage output as well. It also serves as a purgeable/dispellable buff that may help to cover other important spells. Secondly, make sure you always drop
造餐术
for your teammates. It may sound silly to mention, but you would be surprised at how many games I've lost because my healer did not pick up food.
Burst Rotation
The burst rotation is the most integral part of playing Fire Mage correctly. I would suggest practicing this on target dummies or in PvE scenarios until you're comfortable with it.
The Basics
You want to optimize the amount of
炽热连击
s you get with
燃烧
up. After landing CC on the healer, you should:
Aim
流星
so it is only hitting the kill target (if possible).
Press your on-use trinket, racial (e.g.
血性狂怒
), and
燃烧
. Pre-casting
灼烧
and using
燃烧
before it finishes will add a ton of damage to your rotation if you do it without being interrupted.
Cast two
火焰冲击
s (assuming you don't have
热力迸发
or
炽热连击
) into
炎爆术
and then
不死鸟之焰
when you're out of charges.
Repeat this until you run out of instant casts then cast
灼烧
to build
炽热连击
until your
燃烧
runs out.
Try to remember that

and
燃烧
are off the GCD, so you can optimize your damage output in a very short time window. Make sure that while you're doing this damage rotation, you are also paying attention to the duration left on your CC so that you can follow it up with more.
Note:

becoming baseline in 9.0.1 means that it will likely become part of the core burst rotation during

has a splash damage mechanic and can quite easily break CC to anything in close proximity.
Incorporating

The amount of damage

does is more than half of your overall basic burst rotation. If you are able to get a
强效炎爆术
off before starting the rotation that I listed above, you will more than likely insta-kill someone. Also, incorporating
烈焰触媒
into the rotation - which would be before you start the two
火焰冲击
s - will add another 20k burst and lead to more
炽热连击
s.
Consistent Pressure
Once you have learned how to properly execute a burst rotation with cooldowns, you may find that your pressure is lacking outside of them. As I said before, this is one of the weaknesses of Fire.
Using

Most of your consistent pressure will come from trying to build your
燃烧
back up. Chain-casting
火球术
s will lead to some decent pressure, but overall it is usually not enough to force any cooldowns out of the enemy team.
Using

The PvP talent
强效炎爆术
can be very effective at setting up random kill opportunities outside of your offensive cooldowns. If you are able to bait out interrupts and manage to get one off, you can follow it up with all of your instant burst and get rid of a large portion of someone's health.
Crowd Control
Like I have stated before, Fire Mage has a ton of CC. Because of this, a lot of the weight is on your shoulders to get the ball rolling. Most of this CC can be set up yourself with
龙息术
into
变形术
or
冰霜之环
. However, against a lot of compositions, you will have to deal with lots of interrupts. Sometimes, sacrificing your positioning using
闪光术
will cause you to take more damage and be stuck. I would suggest running a composition that has a DPS or healer that can help you lock down the enemy healer via a stun (
制裁之锤
or
肾击
) and follow it up with
变形术
. Making sure you triple DR (diminishing returns) the
变形术
is extremely important because it puts the healer out of the game for the maximum amount of time. Communicating with your teammates to get follow-up CC is crucial after your
变形术
is fully DRed. If you find that you are having trouble dealing with interrupts when you go for CC, try casting
变形术
or
冰霜新星
(if it is a melee) on one of the people with interrupts up before you push in on the enemy healer. Make sure you are using
法术反制
to either stop the enemy healer from healing, or stop a third enemy player from casting an important spell (i.e. Mage casting
变形术
on you). If you happen to be playing with a class that has a spell that shares DRs with
龙息术
(
旋风
,
恐惧
, and
致盲
) make sure you are coordinating that with your team.
Playing Defensively
While Fire is generally the class that puts on the aggression, you will find yourself under pressure most of the game. Utilizing your CC (
龙息术
,
变形术
,
冰霜新星
) to peel yourself and using your defensive cooldowns efficiently is how you break the pressure. While Fire has minimal ways to kite, you can negate damage with
闪光术
and stay away from enemy melee for a short period of time.
Defensive Cooldowns
Your main defensive cooldowns are
闪光术
and eventually
操控时间
when Shadowlands launches. As I said before, you need to use it before incoming damage hits so that you can stave off pressure before it comes. Another ideal scenario to use it in would be if your healer is in CC and has no way to get out.
You should make sure you are pressing
烈焰护体
during crowd control windows on your healer (or off cooldown versus compositions with little crowd control).
Another big defensive you have is
寒冰屏障
. This should be your very last line of defense. Using this incorrectly can cost you the game in most situations, so try to coordinate with your healer about when you should use it.
Fire's unique defensive cooldown is
灸灼
. You should usually let this proc before pressing
寒冰屏障
, unless you are confident you will have to use both in the specific situation.
Common Mistakes Fire Mages Make
Even at the highest level of arena, many Mages make simple errors that have huge effects on the rest of the game. I'm going to list a few and try to explain how you should avoid them.
The most common mistake I see is Mages misusing defensives such as
烈焰护体
,
闪光术
, and with the launch of Shadowlands,
操控时间
. Pressing them while your healer is not in CC is generally not a good idea. Granted, there is merit for this in specific situations, but for the most part you should really save them until they are in CC. If you are playing against a composition that is not CC-heavy, you can use it to help save your healer some mana.
Not casting
变形术
on the healer until it is triple DRed. This is another really big thing because by CCing the healer, you're essentially doing damage. If you happen to get interrupted on your cast and you're unable to follow up the 2nd and 3rd DR, then it may be better to hold off until the DR refreshes.
One of the biggest mistakes I observe other people make is not re-buffing
奥术智慧
. Your goal as the Mage is to keep this buff up the entire game on your whole team. If you're playing against a purge-heavy team, you will have to use a lot of your GCDs pressing
奥术智慧
; not having 5% Intellect in burst windows is really detrimental.
Last, it is important to use
龙息术
carefully when playing with classes that also have a fear DR. Priests, Rogues, Warlocks, and Druids all have a form of CC that will DR with your
龙息术
, so make sure you coordinate with your team about who is going to CC next.
