Major Pitfalls
These are some of the most common things that players tend to fall into the habit of doing. Making a point of identifying if you are doing any of these is key to finding out of they are hampering your performance:
Staying Active with your GCDs:
As simple as this sounds,
this is the single most common cause of low DPS
. While it's glamorous to pick apart the little details, the largest contributor to your output at a baseline level is making sure you leave no empty GCDs on the table. If you're finding you run into downtime often, this is often a case of mis-managing ability cooldowns and causing clashes as there's a domino effect for Enhancement, handling one wrong usually leads to empties down the line. How do you remedy this?
Track your
漩涡武器
state and plan for spend, avoiding waste whenever possible.
Track the state of your primary strike cooldowns (
风暴打击
,
熔岩猛击
, and any talent picks such as
霜刃打击
) alongside your
冰霜震击
cooldown to keep APM high.
Plan for downtime, so you have some ranged abilities such as
漩涡武器
spenders, shocks to fill or even refreshing
风怒图腾
so you're doing something useful at all times.
Practice, Practice, Practice
- muscle memory is very important for Enhancement because often, there's more going on than you can immediately juggle in your head. Getting reps in on target dummies so you can defer some of the ability management to that is invaluable, and while it's boring you'll see results very quickly.
Mismanaging
漩涡武器
:
this is a "pseudo-resource" of sorts from procs, and it fuels your most powerful finishers in
闪电箭
,
熔岩爆裂
,
闪电链
and
元素冲击
. Thanks to
溢流漩涡
, we can potentially spend up to 10 stacks all at once, but instant spellcasts activate at 5. Your goal is to avoid as
much downtime as possible
, but waste as few
漩涡武器
stacks in the process as you can. That means in some cases, you may be spending at 5, and others you can hold up to 10 and then immediately switch to spend. This is especially important for
元素冲击
, which should be kept in a state of one charge or less at all times (so as not to waste potential cooldown time), so watching this timer and cycling around should always be at the front of your mind. This is a balancing act between your other GCD abilities that generate and/or deal damage (e.g.
冰霜震击
,
风暴打击
, and
熔岩猛击
) and these "finishers" and takes some practice to get used to, but is one of
the
most
common rotational mistakes.
Note that
Storm
has a slightly different relationship with
漩涡武器
. It instead leverages it to reset
风暴打击
via
霜巫的传承
to maintain momentum, and will very often waste some if it gets a long
风暴使者
proc streak.
Reacting to Procs:
Crucially, reacting to procs is very important for Enhancement in all situations.

& its relationship with
风暴使者
/
霜巫的传承
means delaying it leads to a loss of procs when playing a
Storm
build. Conversely with
Elementalist
,
灼热之手
requires an instant reaction to begin a weaving cycle of
熔岩猛击
➜ Other ability ➜

, until the buff falls off. This means during this period you will be flooded with resources where you need to plan what your weave globals will be - be that your
冰雹
combo management or when you need to spend
漩涡武器
. This is the
number one
rotational mistake made with
Elementalist
gameplay.
野性狼魂
:
Because of
巫医血统
, this is barely even a cooldown anymore - despite the fact that on paper it has a 90 second one. This should be thought of much more as a rotational burst window that's going to be active every 30 seconds or so, and while it may look far away, it's probably going to be ready a whole lot sooner than you think. Sometimes spending resources when this looks 30 seconds away might mean it's not ready by the time it comes back (in reality in about 10), and left damage on the table by not overlapping them with their respective buffs.
Buff Juggling:
No matter which build you play, there is always going to be some degree of buff management involved. It's more stark in
Elementalist
however, due to the
霜刃打击
/
冰雹
combo it often plays. This deals a hefty amount of damage (especially in AoE), but you still need to follow the rest of the rotation to really capitalize on it. Not
every
冰雹
needs to be buffed by
霜刃打击
, but ideally every
霜刃打击
should
compliment a
冰雹
. This combo is effectively a way to turn a very dull filler (
冰霜震击
) into a combo finisher, but it should be set up in the background of your other rotational goals and unleashed when appropriate, rather than overtaking (and by extension wasting) other important parts of the priority.
AoE Mistakes:
毁灭闪电
Maintenance:
The
毁灭闪电
buff is an important AoE tool, and making sure that
whenever
you can activate it (i.e. with 2 targets in range), then you ideally should. Allowing this to fall off is a loss not only to single target, but also removes free cleave (which works on your primary target) and
漩涡武器
generation (which comes from the splash effect). Predicting your cooldown around add spawns to achieve this is important, as is sniping a final cast just before adds die as well.
鞭笞烈焰
Management:
Elementalist
players have to also think about maintaing
鞭笞烈焰
on as many enemy targets as they can (up to the
烈焰震击
cap of 6), which keeps
熔岩猛击
relevant in multi-target scenarios. While this is difficult and requires tab targetting and debuff juggling, it's a necessary part of the gameplay loop and provides a lot of damage.
Everything about
始源之潮
:
Because this deals so much damage and is such an enjoyable button press, the way it's dealt with is often mis-managed in a rush to get the damage out. This is an AoE tool first, and a burst tool second, and moreover, the biggest payoff is the time after the big hit thanks to
碎裂元素
. Taking the time to set up comfortably and then use
闪电箭
to generate the full 60% Haste is going to net you the most value, and rushing will hurt that. Ideally, if you open with
烈焰震击
➜ Switch Target ➜
始源之潮
➜
熔岩猛击
, this will be a foolproof way of getting 6 active immediately for your follow up. This saves you searching for the one mob that didn't have
烈焰震击
spread to it if you
熔岩猛击
first, wasting valuable opener time.
A final important note for Storm single target:
I cannot stress enough just how important it is to focus entirely on getting as many
风暴打击
casts out during a fight as possible in single target. There is nothing that should get in the way (outside of cooldowns) of you hitting this on cooldown immediately, and everything else is done to support it. Waste doesn't matter, efficient GCD use doesn't matter, it's ALL about
风暴打击
because of how many effects map onto it.
Common Mistakes
These are some of the less egregious mistakes that tend to be overlooked by those who are regularly playing the specialization. They have a lower impact on your output, but they are things that can often be either overthought or underappreciated:
Many players worry a great deal about
漩涡武器
waste and rightly so. While it is true that excessive waste is not ideal, there are situations where it simply cannot be spent fast enough, no matter how much we'd like to. This is especially true in AoE situations and during high generation cooldowns such as
升腾
(with
静电积聚
) or
毁灭之风
. When this happens, the priority still takes precedent and that
漩涡武器
will simply be wasted, because your generation tools converged at one point - and that's okay! The important part is identifying if your waste
elsewhere
in the rotation is leading to droughts
outside
of cooldowns.
As always for DPS, misusing your cooldown options can often be something that will cause severe dips in your potential. Making sure that you are paying attention to both whether you are going to lose a use if you hold a cooldown for a key moment, and also if having it in that window will generate additional damage (or help with defeating an encounter) is contextual, and an important skill. The rule of thumb generally is that you should never be holding cooldowns so much that you are wasting a use entirely, unless this key moment makes it
absolutely
necessary, based on a bosses expected kill time.
裂地术
deserves a section here too. Whilst this is a key talent in all situations, a very common error many players make is sacrificing AoE uses to use it in the here and now for single target purposes. This follows the same rule as cooldowns,
unless you lose a use
by holding the cooldown during its window, saving it for multiple targets (assuming no outside damage buff sources) will
always
be beneficial. It should always be treated as an AoE tool first, and a filler single target tool second. Making sure to plan around periods with high enemy count to push it to its limits will drastically improve your performance in AoE situations.
Things to Improve
In line with this, these are some quick fixes you can look to do outside of the notes posted above that can quickly be made use of in general gameplay:
Putting this into practice then, the most important fix to upping your GCD optimization is to make sure you are planning ahead based on what you have available. If
风暴打击
and
熔岩猛击
are potentially going to clash later down the line, weaving in a Shock to desync them can be helpful - though this isn't always foolproof because of procs that reset that cycle. Likewise, hovering at a comfortable
漩涡武器
amount of 4-6 so you have heavy hitting spell to "fill" instead of spending it as a priority can save you from windows where everything else is on cooldown a few seconds in the future - saving you from a drought. This requires
a lot
of foresight and comfort with the spec, but once you get there it's almost instinct.
A small thing to also note is that your
烈焰震击
/
冰霜震击
and your
漩涡武器
spenders have a 40 yard range, and can be made use of when forced out of melee or against targets that are inaccessible in melee range. This also extends to
升腾
as an absolute last resort tool to stay active (though this can be at the cost of efficient uses). Bear in mind though, that you will need to eyeball how far you are from a target as to whether it is more valuable to enter into
幽魂之狼
to re-engage faster and shift back to a melee priority.
Something else to consider is shifting any tracking tools like weakauras you use to highlight the things you're having the most trouble managing. If you're getting comfortable with ability cooldowns, put a higher focus on
漩涡武器
if you find yourself mismanaging it. There's a lot of benefits to tailoring your UI to assist you rather than showing a command centre of every buff all at once.
General Log Analysis Tips
Do bear in mind that looking at Enhancement logs can sometimes be quite frustrating due to the difficulty of identifying ability use due to
风暴使者
causing high variance. With that said, these are some quick tips when looking at your reports to try to identify issues:
Your
烈焰震击
uptime in single-target should realistically be in the region of 99-100% due to
熔火突袭
and the refresh it provides, though RNG can sometimes interfere with this if proc chains get in the way when playing
Storm
. If you are dipping below 90%, then you should likely be paying more attention to debuff.
Cooldown usage (
野性狼魂
,
升腾
,
始源之潮
and
毁灭之风
) should realistically be lining up with the fight times and each other to make sure you have as many uses as possible at key moments. You should use logs to identify if you are mis-using or mis-timing them, and whether or not you are wasting possible uses by holding them too much.
Most cooldowns lean into stacking with certain effects (i.e.
嗜血
or your racial tools and trinkets) and they are almost always enhanced by condensing buffs into high damage periods. Logs can help to identify whether or not you are desyncing these unnecessarily, which will in the majority of cases reduce your potential with Enhancement.
Check your
漩涡武器
buff chart to see if you're spending an excessive time at 10 stacks, meaning you're holding onto it too much. Conversely, if you're never reaching 10 stacks that indicates you're spending too aggressively, there should be a healthy up-and-down cycle throughout a fight that matches periods where you pool and spend based on ability cooldowns.
When looking at
Storm
breakdowns you should expect to see more time spent at 10, which indicates you're using
风暴使者
chains effectively and using it to reset. If you rarely if ever reach that, it usually implies you're spending much more than you need to and leaving
风暴打击
casts on the table.
