What are Essences?
Essences are a system of power progression for the Heart of Azeroth introduced in patch 8.2. These legendary-like bonuses are unlocked through pre-determined activities including dungeons, raids, open-world activities, PvP, reputations, and achievements, and come in four ranks: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. The second and third ranks add to or improve the base effect, while the last unlocks a flashy visual. Each Essence has a unique Major and Minor power, which can be socketed into the Heart of Azeroth upon completing a short introductory questline. For more information on available Essences and the drop locations for each rank, see our
Heart of Azeroth Essences Overview Guide
.
Essences may be changed in any rested area, or by using any
type item, but the same Essence cannot be used in multiple sockets, resulting in a total of 1 Major and 4 Minor powers active at any one time. You can pre-plan and preview your Essence setup in our
Essence Calculator

Account-Wide Essences for Alts
While Essences have been a chore to unlock on characters until Ny'alotha, Blizzard has introduced a new system in Patch 8.3 to speed up the process of obtaining Essences for subsequent characters: Echoes of Ny'alotha! Most current activities completed, like Mythic+, PvP, or Emissaries will reward a given number of Echoes, which can be traded at MOTHER at the Chamber of Heart for a Rank 3 Essence that you have already unlocked in another toon.

Elemental Shaman Essence Simulations
We have comparative simulations for each of the different Major and Minor essence powers, courtesy of SimulationCraft, Bloodmallet, and other class tools. Don't forget that this is simply an overview; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
.
Again, this is simply an overview. Certain Essences, such as Worldvein minor, may be worse in practice on encounters with heavy movement or when you are the only player in your group using it. Reference the Essence notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of each individual power.
Best Elemental Shaman Major Essences
While only one Major power can be used at a time, whichever Essence is socketed into the center node of the Heart of Azeroth will also activate its Minor Power, so both effects should be taken into consideration when determining which to use. Below is a short ranking of what we think will be notable Strong and Situational Major Essences you should consider using when playing an Elemental Shaman.
Worldvein Resonance -
Source: Island Expeditions (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete the weekly quest
/
.
Rank 2: Combine
from island expeditions.
Rank 3: Complete the mission chain starting with "A Disturbing Rumor".
Rank 4: Complete a specific
mission.
This major has received a very major buff going into 8.3. When you use it you're granted +300% value from the primary stats given to you by the Lifeblood Shards. This buff has made it competitive for the top slot when it comes to single-target. Preliminary sims place it just barely behind Condensed Life-Force, but it's close enough that individual gearsets and encounter mechanics will occasionally have us using this essence in 8.3.
Condensed Life-Force -
Source: Azshara's Eternal Palace (click for details!)
Rank 1: Combine 9
.
Rank 2: Combine 18
.
Rank 3: Combine 27
.
Rank 4: Defeat Queen Azshara on Mythic difficulty.
Use on: Single Target
For most builds and situations, this will be the strongest single-target essence. For Elemental this is largely a fire and forget 3 minute cooldown which doesn't synergize well time-wise with our baseline cooldown and isn't strong enough to bring
into the spotlight. As such, it doesn't really change how we play at all but is simply a strong cooldown to have.
Blood of the Enemy -

Rank 1:
.
Rank 2:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 3:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
Rank 4:
, purchase from War Coordinator NPC.
This essence has one very strong synergy, and utilizing that synergy allows it to be the primary essence used for high-end Mythic+. Using this essence alongside
&
allows you to line the buffs it grants up with
and
for periods of massive burst.
Essence of the Focusing Iris -
Source: Mythic+ (click for details!)
Rank 1: Complete a +4 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 2: Complete a +7 Mythic dungeon in season 3.
Rank 3: Combine 15
from the weekly cache.
Rank 4: Complete
.
Use on: Burst AoE
The Major power on this essence has, far and away, the highest burst potential of any essence. It's tricky to use with both a cast time and a channel, so positioning and some practice to get used to it are of paramount importance. Proper use of this essence will not only require understanding the essence itself, but also timing in the fights you're doing and how the tanks you play with tend to position/move the mobs so that you can ensure that you hit every target possible with the beam. You can move while channeling this essence. As such it's possible to cast it in advance if you're sure mobs will move into the spot you're aiming at.
That said, this is available to everyone, so keep in mind what your fellow players are using as having too many of these used at once is likely to overkill the targets and will lose damage for everyone involved.
The minor grants consistent haste, which is easy for us to maintain and is a stat we'll always enjoy having more of! However, it falls off if we swap targets and so it won't be incredibly useful in the instances where we want this Major Essence.
Vision of Perfection -
Source: Operation Mechagon (click for details!)
Rank 1: Defeat King Mechagon.
Rank 2:
from King Mechagon and craft
.
Rank 3: Combine 4
, dropped by King Mechagon.
Rank 4: Obtain
.
Use on: Most scenarios, with caveats described below
This essence is quite a bit of fun as a major essence, and has quite a bit of synergy with different talents and abilities in our kit! The minor, which the major also grants, reduces the baseline cooldown of our
&
by 15% (from 150 seconds to 127.5 seconds.) The minor synergizes even further with
, which will favor empowering Lava Burst even more than before due to the lower baseline cooldown.
The major synergizes with a couple of talents in pretty fun ways. Here's how it works:
1) When you get a proc of the major effect, it extends the duration of the existing Elemental rather than casting a new one. On the flip side of this, if you get a proc just before your Elemental comes off cooldown then the duration is extended when you use the cooldown. This synergizes well with
as higher uptime on your Primal Elemental gives it strength relative to other options in the row.
2) If you have
, the stacking buff that reduces the cast time of
and
will not reset when the Major essence procs and extends the duration.
Current sims suggest that
alongside this competes with top builds if you have the opportunity to stand still for most of the fight, though that's relatively rare nowadays.
Breath of the Dying -
Use on: World content, encounters where the execute effect can be abused
This major is similar to The Crucible of Flame above, both in strength and in its use. There is however one additional thing to keep in mind. It has both a high health and low health execute mechanic. It will be stronger in situations where you can reset it or abuse the cooldown reduction granted by hitting high/low health enemies or by executing them.
Because of this it should also be fairly strong in solo world content.
The Crucible of Flame -

Rank 1:
.
Rank 2: Neck level 54 and
.
Rank 3: Neck level 60 and
.
Rank 4: Neck level 70 and
.
Use on: Single Target
This is a simple fire/forget ability that is currently tuned to be ok, but not great. When first interacting with the essence system, this is the one to go for until you have access to equal or higher ranks of Worldvein Resonance or Condensed Life-Force. You should use it on cooldown generally, though if you need to delay it a bit to ensure you aren't losing charges of our other rotational abilities that's fine. Just don't waste any charges!
Conflict and Strife -
Source: PvP - Conquest (click for details!)
Rank 1: Earn 500 Conquest and claim a weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 2: Reach 1,000 Rating in Rated PvP and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 3: Collect
from your weekly PvP War Chest.
Rank 4: Reach Elite rank and claim your next weekly PvP War Chest.
This Major grants
, which does a decent amount of damage. However, this is getting nerfed by 10% in 8.3, which takes this essence that was already not at the top end of things and makes it even weaker.
The minor is also relatively strong as it's both easy to stack and easy to maintain.

Rank 3: Collect

Outside of certain very situational uses (e.g. Jumping over
on
) this essence provides no dps value. It'll occasionally be nice for certain pieces of movement we may need to make as we don't have Blink or a similar ability, but those will almost never be enough make it worth the major slot.

I was very excited for this essence originally, as it brings back memories of the insane
chains that the gambling builds in Legion gave us. However, the reality is that with
now having a fixed cost and not being terribly strong relative to the rest of our kit without high
stacks we don't gain nearly as much as we did from resets or increased generation back in Legion. Combine that with a relatively low proc rate on the minor and you have one of the weakest essences for Elemental. It's fun to play with, but it's not good sadly.
Purification Protocol -
Source: Rustbolt Resistance Reputation (click for details!)
Rank 1: Honored, purchase for 4
and 2
.
Rank 2: Revered, purchase for 20
and 10
.
Rank 3: Exalted, purchase for 40
and 10
.
Rank 4: Rustbolt Resistance Paragon cache.
Use on: Sustained Multi-target, Mythic+
This Major essence is effectively another slightly stronger
on a 60 second cooldown, and the minor is a small amount of free direct damage. The fun, and the strength, of this essence comes when you can utilize the passive effect of the major essence well. For example, if you're going into a M+ dungeon where you know you'll frequently be chain pulling or any situation where you kill a large number of adds at once and are able to continue damaging a primary target. Raid examples that come to mind are Zek'voz and Zul from Uldir, and Opulence in Battle for Dazar'alor.
Outside of this specific situation, or any potential situation where you benefit from the extra passive when damaging abberations, this essence can be safely ignored.
Spark of Inspiration -
Use to: Empower your party members in a support-like manner
This major is an interesting one, but as much of its value is in empowering your friends it's not a very strong essence for the caster itself. If you need to empower allies with this for a particular strat, then do so. Otherwise this major won't be worth taking.
The Formless Void -
Use to: Borrow a healing or tank essence that you might need in a specific moment
This essence is
extremely
situational. Unless you need to steal a particular essence that you don't have access to for a very specific reason, this won't ever be worth using. That the essence goes on cooldown for 30% longer than the essence you're borrowing only underlines that fact.
Best Elemental Shaman Minor Essences
Two additional Minor Essence slots can be unlocked over time, providing additional benefit. While the above rankings already detailed several minor bonuses, the rankings below consider only the Minor or how it might interact when using it alongside a different Major Essence. Anything not listed is currently considered undesirable or has no noteworthy interaction.
The Crucible of Flame -
Use on: Single-Target
This minor is a simple DoT that applies from any of your abilities. It doesn't look strong on the surface, but is certainly tuned to be strong and the numbers currently make it one of the strongest minor essences.
Worldvein Resonance -
Use on: In group settings where multiple other players use the same minor
This minor essence is made for group content, and so long as many players in your group use it this will be the best minor in the game. If you're the only one using it though, it's not really worthwhile. It's a proximity effect, which means you'll lose it in any encounter with heavy movement. However, this is mitigated heavily if you have a bunch of allies using it as your group will be spawning shards constantly.
Breath of the Dying -
Use on: Sustained Single-target
This minor is similar to The Crucible of Flame above, both in strength and in its use. There is however one additional thing to keep in mind. It has a low health execute mechanic. It will be stronger in situations where you can reset it or abuse the extra damage granted by hitting low hp targets.
This minor is tuned to be very strong at the moment, and will outperform most other minors in single-target scenarios.
Strife -
Use on: Single-target, general gameplay
This is a relatively basic essence but provides static Versatility. As this minor is easy to stack and maintain, it's worth using whenever you won't be able to maintain proper uptime on other essences, or benefit well from both the damage and the damage reduction Versatility provides.
Purification Protocol -
Use on: Sustained Multi-target, Mythic+
This is one of the few minor powers that deals AoE damage rather than single-target damage, and may end up having a place in situations where you're focusing on AoE. Get it, and we'll let you know as soon as we're sure how the numbers work out!
Strive for Perfection -
Use when the shorter cooldown lines up with encounter mechanics
This particular minor is ok on its own, providing a bit more uptime on our powerful
&
. This would be especially powerful when encounter mechanics line up well with the shorter cooldown and you aren't already taking the major!
Focused Energy -
Use on: Sustained Single-target, Patchwerk
This minor is a bit bland, but should be strong in the one situation it's made for - hitting a singular target and nothing else. This grants a stacking buff that's easy to maintain for us on one target, but falls off immediately if you swap targets. This will likely be a staple for us if we run into a primarily single-target fight.
The Formless Void -
Use in: Raids specifically, the more people in your group the better!
This minor gives you a large primary boost and a small haste buff that will likely have a very high uptime depending on the number of allies you have with you. The more allies you have, the higher the uptime and the better the essence this becomes.
Condensed Life-Force -
Use on: Single-target
This minor provides a nice little high-uptime damage amplification. The direct damage and damage amplification that it provides make it a fairly strong essence to take much of the time, though it's weaker than other options in the strong tab.
Blood-soaked -
As mentioned in the major section, this minor power provides a nice chunk of secondary stats that we enjoy, but doesn't give enough of them or give them consistently enough to be good sadly.
Lucid Dreams -
For those of you that enjoyed the old Gambling builds in Legion, this is the minor power for you! Combining this with
means that they can stack, with you potentially going from 60 Maelstrom to 90 when you cast an Earth Shock or Earthquake! This will be less powerful than the old Gambling build as there aren't as many procs in play, this one has a relatively low chance, and
now has a fixed cost rather than the variable cost it had in Legion.
For those of you that didn't play Legion, this minor occasionally refunds half the
you spend, and is essentially
writ small. You'll have more Maelstrom to play with, and more Maelstrom is more fun!
Sadly, more fun isn't strong and we get very little overall dps from this essence.
Spark of Inspiration -
Use to: Empower your party members in a support-like manner
Like the major, the minor is more about empowering your allies than it is about empowering yourself. Keep an eye on it, as there is potential for many people to use it at once if it's strong enough. However, it's not looking good from an individual standpoint at the moment.
