What is Corruption?
Corruption is a new system of power progression which replaces Titanforging; instead of item level bonuses, they will now have a chance to be Corrupted by the Old Gods, represented by the purple-colored stat which adds both a positive effect and stacking negative attribute which incurs penalties at various thresholds. Although the negative effects can reach a point at which they become debilitating, carefully managing the bonuses and penalties allows for a great deal of customization and individual power gain.
Corrupted gear can be freely cleansed by MOTHER in order to remove both effects and revert them back into normal items. Corruption can also be added on non-corrupted items, by purchasing
Preserved Contaminants with MOTHER
. Corruption resistance can also be gained over time, both from new minor essences, and the legendary cloak
, allowing more corrupted effects to be worn. For more information on all potential Corruptions, see our
Corruption Overview Guide
.
Best Destruction Warlock Corruption Bonuses
We have comparative simulations for each of the various Corruption affixes which can roll on gear, courtesy of SimulationCraft and Bloodmallet. While this overview should give you a good general idea of how each compare to one another, your specific character may see slightly different results based on how you are geared and what Corruptions are available to you; you can create your own comparisons as well as combinations of different essences you have unlocked on your character using
Raidbots
Top Gear function. If you are not already familiar with Raidbots and how to use it, take a look at our
How To Guide
. When looking at corruption effects it is important not to look at the overall power of a given effect, but at how much power per corruption is gained while staying below your safe threshold. By using Top Gear, you can play with the Max Corruption bar, allowing you to maximize your damage based on your Corruption risk choices.
This is simply an overview and doesn't take into account the negative effects of stacking Corruption. While increasing Corruption will continually increase player power, it comes at the cost of serious side effects, which may be debilitating in some activities or encounters. Reference the Corruption Effect notes and recommendations below to see how your spec can best take advantage of these bonuses and deal with the detriments.
Please also note that when using more than one of the same corruption, even different tiers of the same corruption, the effect/benefit (damage, statistical gains, etc) stack while durations and proc rates remain unchanged. The only exception is
, unique to the Ny'alotha raid weapon
, which will proc independently when dual wielded.

Destruction scales very well with pretty much all stats. I recommend always simming your character with the items and bonuses you have available. This list is merely to give you a general idea of what bonuses and procs are looking strong and what bonuses are looking weak.
Best Effects
- The bonus of haste this grants you is an overall very strong damage bonus as haste is one of the strongest stats.
- Overall super strong, second best right after
.
- Depending on the proc rate of this effect it has the potential to be a strong option. Currently this looks to be one of the strongest options
- One of the strongest effects as mastery significantly increases the damage of all our spells
- Currently the strongest choice. This is strongest on full single target fights.
- The bonus crit damage is very strong as Destruction as the majority of our damage is dealt through
.
Good Effects
- Mastery increases the damage from all of our spells making this effect very strong aswell.
- Destruction also scales well with crit, depending on your stat weights this effect could end up being very strong aswell.
- Versatility is generally speaking not the most attractive stat as mastery does the same but tends to scale better. That being said, depending on your stat weights this can also be strong.
- This one is a bit different. The versatility proc is very good, but it requires you to take damage in order to proc it.
Bad Effects
- This would be used to reduce the cooldown of
, but currently the proc rate is simply too low for this effect to be a viable option.
- Destruction scales very well with crit as it significantly increases the damage of our
. But currently, we do not gain enough value from this trait when compared to the alternative options we have available.
- Currently not viable, provides an additional 3-5 seconds off cooldowns per proc. Doesn't do anything as you want to align your cooldowns anyway.

Best Destruction Warlock Ny'alotha Weapons
Besides random corruption effects, weapons from the new Ny'alotha raid also have exclusive effects on them, which can be quite powerful. Similar to random corruption effects, if you obtain a weapon with a subpar effect, you can always cleanse it. As a Destruction Warlock, you can obtain weapons with the following effects:
always comes with
- The best available corruption bonus. The damage bonus can be very strong and end up doing significant damage against single or multiple targets.
always comes with
- Doesn't reduce cooldowns enough to make it worth choosing. You'll be better off gaining corruption from other sources.
What Corruptions should I Buy from MOTHER on a Destruction Warlock?
Corruptions now can be
purchased from MOTHER
using
. Every few days, a new set of Corruptions will be accessible.
With that in mind, we present a list of the best corruptions to purchase from MOTHER on a Destro Lock.
- This should be your #1 priority to purchase. A lot of our talents/trinkets/traits will benefit from this.
- Very good value per corruption, if available on the vendor this is a very strong option.
- Having a
to play with makes the spec feel very good, personally I like to play 1 of these effects.
- Much like
but with mastery instead, this proc during our damage burst phases makes it a very strong effect.
Dealing with Negative Effects of Corruption
In addition to the bonuses, corrupted items also increase the Corrupted stat by varying amounts based on the tier of the effect. Corruption stat incurs penalties that the player must deal with, and while these effects start out rather benign, they quickly ramp up in both potency and impact, to the point where it can be very hard to deal with during a Dungeon or Raid encounter, and even become outright debilitating at the highest levels.
There are five effects unlocked at different total corruption levels:
- Unlocked with 1 Corruption
- Unlocked with 20 Corruption
- Unlocked with 40 Corruption
- Unlocked with 60 Corruption
- Unlocked with 80 Corruption
Learn more about Corruption in our in-depth guide!
At Rank 6, the legendary Cloak
gains an on-use effect which will remove and immune all currently active negative corruption effects.
- While
is active you cannot be slowed below 100% movement speed. This essentially negates this mechanic.
- Again you can use
to avoid these void zones on demand. The legendary cloak dispel can be used in cases where strategy restricts you from moving.
- Since the Thing from Beyond disappears when stunned, picking
can have some benefit reducing the cooldown of your stun if you cannot get full use or benefit from
- If you allow your Corruption to reach this level you should be diligent about your use of your whole toolkit to assist you. The tips above should allow you some wiggle room if you end up playing with this much Corruption.
How Much Corruption Should a Destruction Warlock Take?
I would suggest not going above 40 corruption so you won't have to deal with
. This may change as we get more used to the system and get more used to dealing with these mechanics. This section will also be updated as more tactics on how to deal with the various corruption effects are developed.

The sims linked are Demonology sims.
The title also says Demonology even though it's supposed to be about Destruction.
